Donald W. Byrne

KINGSFORD - Donald W. Byrne, 77, of Kingsford, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Evergreen Assisted Living in Kingsford.

He was born Dec. 19, 1930, in Iron Mountain, the son of the late Jack and Clara (Laduron) Byrne.

Donald graduated from Kingsford High School in 1949. He immediately joined the military and proudly served until his honorable discharge as a chief master sergeant from the Air Force after 20 years of service.

He is survived by his nephew, Dave (Shelley) Byrne of Kingsford; his special great-nieces, Stephanie (Craig) Tomczak of Homestead, Wis., Heather (Chris) Strong of Kingsford, Nancy Jayne of Iron Mountain, and Stacie (Ed) Snively of Iron Mountain; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be Friday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at First Lutheran Church.

A memorial service will be held on at 7 p.m. at the church. Rev. James Chinery will officiate.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Viola M. Christensen

BREITUNG TOWNSHIP - Viola M. Christensen, 89, of Breitung Township, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain.

She was born on Aug. 16, 1918, daughter of the late Robert and Mary (Bray) Moln. She was a lifelong resident of the area.

She was a member of the American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. She enjoyed doing laundry, hanging clothes, taking walks and dancing. She loved to be around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Viola is survived by a son, John Gasparach of Kingsford; daughters, Mary (Richard) Trecartin of Iron Mountain and Judy (Daniel) Schumacher of Fond du Lac, Wis.; brothers, Stanley (Ernestine) Moln of Gaastra and Archie (Jean) Moln of Milwaukee; a sister in-law, Eunice Moln of Vulcan; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris B. Christensen; a sister, Evelyn Morganroth; a brother, Robert Moln; and a great-granddaughter, Jessica Cowling.

Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11a.m. at the American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford.

The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.

The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is handling the arrangements.

Jean S. Paoli

IRON MOUNTAIN - Jean Shirley Paoli, 84, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Monday, March 31, 2008, at ManorCare Health Services.

She was born on June 19, 1923, the daughter of the late Domenic 'Patty' and Hilma Flaminio.

Jean was a lifelong resident and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1941. She worked as a secretary at Lake Shore Manufacturing for 16 years before retiring.

Jean was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Church and sang in the choir for many years. She was a member of Pine Grove Country Club, the Paisano Club, and the Red Hat Society. Jean enjoyed bowling and especially the trips to the Wisconsin State Championships. She loved to play cards and was an avid Iron Mountaineer fan. She also enjoyed her bus trips to the casino. Her family was the center of her life.

Jean married Leo Paoli on Aug. 21, 1943, in Iron Mountain. The couple celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2003. Leo preceded her in death on May 17, 2004.

Jean is survived by three children, Michael Paoli of Long Beach, Calif., David (Sue) Paoli of Kingsford, and Lisa (Paul) Skowronski of Kingsford; eight grandchildren, Mark (Lisa), Melissa, and Amy (Jeff), all of California, and Brian, Dan (Liz), Brad, Macy, and Marcus, all from the Iron Mountain-Kingsford area; five great-grandchildren, Dylan and Zoe Paoli, Hannah and David Copley, and Mason Paoli; a sister, Noreen Gussert of Kingsford; two brothers, Don (Terri) Flaminio and Larry (Marion) Flaminio, both of Iron Mountain; a sister-in-law, Barbara Flaminio of Orlando, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Armeda Kentgen of Iron Mountain; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Patrick on Dec. 2, 1963; one brother, Ken Flaminio; and one sister, 'Sis' Perucco.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.

Services will be Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Pallbearers will be Brian, Danny, Brad, Mark, Marcus, Macy, Amy, and Melissa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Vincent de Paul, 117 West A St., Iron Mountain, Mich. 49801

Jay C. Jennings

CRYSTAL FALLS - Jay C. Jennings, 93, of Jule Lake Road, Crystal Falls, died Sunday, March 30, 2008, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.

Jay was born on Feb. 16, 1915, in Hudson, Mich., son of the late Jay and Ethel Jennings. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1933, and from Michigan State University with a degree in bacteriology in 1942. Jay served in France as a lieutenant in Signal Corps with the United States Army during World War II.

He married the former Luciel Carlson on Oct. 18, 1952, and she preceded him in death on March 6, 1996. Jay worked for 17 years at the State Health Department Lab in Lansing. He transferred to the Health Department Branch Lab in Powers in 1963. Jay was the director of the Powers Lab for 15 years, retiring in 1978. He was active in the Boy Scouts and was a Scout Master in Haslett, Mich. and Gladstone. Jay received a scholarship to the Philmont Scout Training Center in Cimarron, N.M. for outstanding leadership in scouting, church, civic and other community organizations.

Jay served as a member and president of the Haslett School Board, Order of the Arrow, American Radio Relay League, Bacteriologist Association, Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, Golden K and the First Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed canoeing, gardening, fishing, hunting, traveling and camping with his grandchildren. He especially enjoyed operating his HAM radio.

He is survived by his sons, Chuck (Judy) Jennings of Iron Mountain, Bill Jennings of Crystal Falls and Robert (Julie) Jennings of South Milwaukee, Wis; two sisters-in-law, Pat Carlson of Crystal Falls and Margaret Benson of Orlando, Fla.; six grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Luciel, he was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Jennings and a sister, Jean Spalding.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.

Memorial services will be held at 12 noon at the church. Rev. Michael March will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to First Presbyterian Church.

Gladys M. Partanen

KINGSFORD - Gladys Marie Partanen, 84, of 301 Wilson Ave. in Kingsford, died Sunday, March 30, 2008, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.

Gladys was born on March 29, 1924, in Gladstone, daughter of the late Alvin and Ingrid (Kallman) Olson. She graduated from Kingsford High School in 1942 and was a lifelong resident of the area.

Gladys married George Partanen on July 6, 1945. He preceded her in death in 1989.

Gladys worked at Dickinson County Hospital in dietary services for many years, retiring in 1976. She was a member of the Red Hat Society. For the past 4 1/2 years, Gladys has resided at ManorCare Health Services where she served as the resident council president. She was an avid Green Bay Packer and Kingsford Flivver fan. Gladys enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting and reading.

She is survived by three children, Robert Partanen, Faye (Joe) Podgornik and Larry (Barbara) Partanen, all of Kingsford; a brother, Robert 'Sonny' (Debbie) Olson of Kingsford; two sisters, Elayne (Leonard) White of Holt, Mich. and Helen Bennett of Kingsford; one brother-in-law, Lauri Partanen of Beverly Hills, Fla.; five grandchildren, Betsy (Charlie) Garbrecht, Eric LeQuia, Scott Podgornik, Vicky Farrell and Alison Partanen; five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Helen Wickman.

Gladys was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Kulman; a brother, Ray Olson; and a grandson, Eric Podgornik.

Visitation will be Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.

Funeral services will follow Thursday at 12 noon at the church. Pastor Lee Liverance will officiate.

Burial will be in Quinnesec cemetery.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home with arrangements.

John A. Newkirk M.D.

TUCSON, Ariz. - John A. Newkirk, M.D., 93, formerly of Iron Mountain, died on March 30, 2008, in Arizona.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.

Jay E. Walsh

GRANITE BLUFF - Jay E. Walsh, 51, of W8368 Swanson Road in Granite Bluff, passed away, Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain after a courageous five month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Jay was born on Sept. 1, 1956, in Milwaukee, Wis. He was a 1975 graduate of Iron Mountain High School.

He married the former Lynn Johnson on May 2, 1987, at First Covenant Church. Jay proudly worked for Grede Foundry in Kingsford for the past 32 years.

He attended First Covenant Church. Jay was involved in the men's Tri County Slow Pitch Softball League and several area mens and couples bowling leagues. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. Jay enjoyed following the sports and activities his children were involved in and especially enjoyed being a 'Horse Show Dad, '

He is survived by his wife, Lynn; his children, Tierney, Lacey and Tanner, all at home; his mother and stepfather, Eloyce and Herb Lewis of Kingsford; two sisters, Kay (Rich) O'shaughnessy of Iron Mountain and Kit (Dan) Nelson of Kingsford; mother-in-law, Dee Johnson of Granite Bluff; brother-in-law, Ward (LeeAnn) Johnson of Granite Bluff; sister-in-law, Carla (Mike) Hiatt of Granite Bluff; and by many special nieces, nephews, great-niece and great-nephews and his faithful Labs, Erin and Emma.

Jay was preceded in death by his father, Jack; his brother, Tim; and his father-in-law, mentor and friend, Carl Johnson.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Rev. Peter Erickson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Dumke, Jeff Brisson, Tom Peters, Lou Taff, Joe Mitchelson and Ward Johnson.

Jay was a wonderful husband, father and friend to everyone and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the arrangements.

June L. Henkel

KINGSFORD - June Lorraine Henkel, 85, of Kingsford, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.

She was born on June 12, 1922, in Homestead, Wis., the daughter of the late Richard and Lizzie (Anderson) Larson.

June was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter W. Lindgren in 1959; seven brothers, Lloyd, Samuel, Lawrence, Danny, Kenneth, Jack, and Glenn Larson; and one sister, Pearl Larson.

She is survived by her husband, Martin Henkel; four children, Caroline Lindgren (Rob) Anderson of Buffalo Grove, Ill., Glenda Lindgren (Herb) Carlson of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Doug Lindgren of Green Bay, Wis., and Dale Lindgren of San Mateo, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Judy Henkel (Harold) Anderson of Brampton, Mich.; four grandchildren, John (Amy) Anderson of Lombard, Ill., Jeff (Chris) Anderson of Palatine, Ill., Lane (Alesha) Carlson of San Diego, and Landon Carlson of San Diego; one step-grandson, Roger Anderson of Brampton; one great-grandson, Austin Anderson and many nieces and nephews.

June's best friend was her husband and her second best friend was her Bible. Since 1960, she had a Sunday morning Christian fellowship meeting and a Wednesday evening Bible study meeting in her home.

Her kind and gentle spirit was enjoyed by her family and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Luther Raine will officiate.

Howard Farragh

IRON MOUNTAIN- Howard W. Farragh, 88, of Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.

He was born on June 8, 1919, in Marquette County, son of the late William and Flora (LaCost) Farragh. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a sergeant during WWII, seeing action from 1942 to 1945. He spent all three years oversees seeing action in Papua, New Guinea, Bismark-Rarchia, the Philippines and Luzon. He served with 321st Bomb Squad and was a member of the 907th Bomb Group. He had six overseas service bars symbolizing his three years overseas. He also received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the Dist. Unit Badge, and the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star.

After being honorably discharged, he married Margie LaRouche on Oct. 20, 1945, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Howard worked first for Ford Motor Co., and then for the city of Iron Mountain, retiring on Jan. 1, 1980. He was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church, the V.F.W., and the American Legion Post #50.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bella Dishaw.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 63 years, Margie; son, David (Donna) Farragh of Iron Mountain; grandson, Scott (Dawn) Farragh of Marquette; three great-grandsons, Devin, Kolton, and Bradon Farragh all of Marquette; step grandson, Eric (Tracy) Erfourth of Minnesota; one brother, James (Marlene) Farragh of Bessemer; two sisters, Betty Leonard of Crystal Falls, and Geraldine Perry of Minnesota; special sister in-law, Betty Pirlot of Iron Mountain; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 24, 2008, from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will follow at noon at the church. Fr. Daniel Moll will offer the Mass of Christian burial. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews Frank Opolka and William Opolka, Mike Pirlot, Jeff Pirlot, Steven Perry, great nephew Brad Coe. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.

The Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is handling the arrangements.

Sarah Pietrantonio

IRON MOUNTAIN - Sarah Lynn Pietrantonio, 22, of Iron Mountain, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Jan. 29, 1986, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of John and Pamela (Yaggie) Pietrantonio Jr.

Sarah was a very compassionate person and always willing to help others. She always had a smile and enjoyed life to its fullest. As a student in Steve Cavalieri's class at the I.S.D., she assisted her classmates whenever she could. Sarah loved animals and volunteered at the Spring Lake Animal Shelter. She was a member and volunteer at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. She especially enjoyed babysitting at the church. Sarah was very active in the Relay for Life and the Special Olympics. Her hobbies included making crafts, beading, boating, camping, four-wheeling, and swimming.

She is survived by her parents, John and Pam; two sisters, Samantha Pietrantonio of Iron Mountain and Summer Pietrantonio and special friend, Eric Segerdahl and his children, Savannah and Lily of Norway; her maternal grandparents, Irving and Sandy Yaggie of Iron Mountain; her paternal grandmother, Shirley Pietrantonio of Kingsford; her favorite dog, Tony; a very special cousin, "Mister" Garrett Marinconz, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Sarah was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Joanne Yaggie and her paternal grandfather, John Pietrantonio Sr.

Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate. Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Danny, Christopher, Jason, and Thomas Pietrantonio, Garrett Marinconz, Eric Segerdahl, Steve Cavalieri, Jeremy Smith, and Alan Barribeau.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Spring Lake Animal Shelter or to Mr. Cavalieri's classroom at the I.S.D.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.
