Eldred L. Erdman
QUINNESEC - Eldred L. Erdman, 88, of Quinnesec, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
He was born on May 11, 1919, in Quinnesec, the only child of the late William and Elsie (Green) Erdman. He grew up and graduated from the Quinnesec High School in 1936. He went on and graduated from the Badger Business College in Green Bay, Wis. in 1937.
On April 3, 1941, he joined the United States Army and served as a medic during World War II. He was discharged with a surgical technician 3 rating from the 291st Engineer Combat Battalion. In his four years and seven months of service, 3 1/2 of the years were spent in the European Theatre of Operations. This time included the battles and campaigns on Normandy and D-Day, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardenes, and Central Europe.
He married
Grace Hope Huebner on June 15, 1946, and together had two daughters, Carol Dawn Sweis of Amman, Jordan and Sandra Ruth Adams of Quinnesec.
He worked for the Wisconsin-Michigan Power Co. for 42 years and was the treasurer of the EMBA for eight years.
Eldred was a member of the Quinnesec Methodist Church where he served as a church school teacher, administrative board chairman and treasurer.
He was also a lay minister at many local churches and was active in the jail ministry. Eldred served as camp dean for the Bible camp at Michigamme for many years. He was on the Breitung Township School Board for three years and during that time was the treasurer for one year. In 1971, he became a member of the Gideon International and has been active ever since.
Eldred is survived by his wife, Hope; two daughters, Carol (Nabil) Sweis of Amman, Jordan and Sandra (Anthony) Adams of Quinnesec; grandchildren, Ranya (Mark) Faasse of Chicago, Amal (Jeries) Haddadin of Amman, Jordan, Seth Adams of Norway, Torrey (Ginnie) Adams of Kingsford, Luke Adams of Buffalo, N.Y., and Anthony M. Adams of Norway; and a great-grandson, Laith Haddadin of Amman, Jordan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Nathan C. Adams.
Visitation will be Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Quinnesec United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with Anthony W. Adams officiating.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.

The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.
DIANE S. (RUHLIG) LAHRMAN
Nunica
"The King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world." (Matthew 25:34)
Diane S. (Ruhlig) Lahrman, 47, of Nunica died March 23, 2006, after a two-year battle with cancer. She was born May 4, 1958, to Shirley and Martin Ruhlig of Wayne.
"Our gracious heavenly Father sent his angels to carry home to himself the soul of Diane Lahrman. She now rests from her labor as she has crossed the finish line in faith. She has received from the Lord, himself, the crown of eternal life that was promised in her baptism in 1958, " her family said in a statement.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Lahrman enjoyed music as she played the organ for church services, Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, teaching piano and leading instrumental music for special services.
Mrs. Lahrman also had a "green thumb" as she worked seasonally at Springtime Flowers in Nunica. She grew up on the farm, working with her family growing produce in the Romulus area.
In 1968, the family moved to Island Lake Road in Dexter Township, and they continued their produce business, Ruhlig's Market.
Mrs. Lahrman was a 1976 graduate of Dexter High School. She married
William C. Lahrman Nov. 24, 1978. Together they have celebrated 27 anniversaries.
Bill and her children, Zac, Sherri, Melanie and Hannah, survive.
Mrs. Lahrman is also survived by her parents, Martin and Shirley Ruhlig of Dexter; her grandmother, Violet Ruhlig of Dexter; brother, Marty (Ann) Ruhlig of Dexter; sister, Nancy Ruhlig of Dexter; and brother, Dan Ruhlig of Chelsea; as well as several nephews and nieces.
Visitation was held Friday and Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nunica. A Service of Coronation was held Sunday at St. Luke.
Interment was at Ottawa Center cemetery in Nunica.
Since Mrs. Lahrman loved music and had played the organ for many years, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Luke Memorial Fund in hopes of purchasing a new organ for the church.

Matthew J. Tuttle
Matthew J. Tuttle, 28, of Chelsea died in the line of duty April 13, 2006. He was born Dec. 15, 1977, in Ann Arbor the son of Thomas and Janet (Paul) Tuttle. He had lived in Chelsea all of his life.
Mr. Tuttle worked for his family's business, Tuttle Spring Designs, from 1986 to 2000. He graduated from Chelsea High School in 1996, and earned a bachelor's degree from Siena Heights in January 2006.
Mr. Tuttle was a captain for the Chelsea Fire Authority since April of 2006, serving since 1997, and also worked for Huron Valley Ambulance since 1998. He was also enrolled in the Police Academy for Chelsea Reserves. In addition, he was a Washtenaw County medical examiner trainee for one year.
Mr. Tuttle was president and past board member of Lake LeAnne Properties Owners' Association. He also was a helicopter and private plane pilot.
On July 31, 2004, he married
Mary K. Lisznyai on Mackinaw Island, and she survives.
Also surviving are his parents of Jerome; his mother-in-law, Pamela, of Chelsea; grandparents, Richard and Mary Kalmbach of Gregory; brother, Marc Tuttle of Chelsea; sister-in-law, Kris Loucks of Chelsea; nieces, Andrea and Brianna Loucks; nephews, Jacob Broese and Christopher Lisznyai; niece, Jessica Lisznyai; aunts, Elaine (Wayne) Quick of Holt and Roberta (Gary) Hohenberger of Ann Arbor; several cousins, including Trisha and J.D. Daniels of Lansing and Matt (Bonnie) Lennox, also of Lansing.
He also leaves behind his special search-and-rescue dog, Blaise, and cat, Snickers.
Mr. Tuttle was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Michael Lisznyai, and sister-in-law, Tammy Lisznyai; maternal grandparents, Edwin "Bo" and Thelma Paul; and paternal grandparents, Leo and Ellen Tuttle. A funeral was held Tuesday at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.
The Revs. Mearl Bradley and Larry Lyons co-officiated.
The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday and Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the family or the Chelsea Fire Authority Auxiliary.
Riley Scott Sumner
Riley Scott Sumner, 43, of Chelsea died as a result of a work-related helicopter accident in Washtenaw County April 13, 2006. He was born Aug. 7, 1962, the son of Clyde R. and Merry E. (Grady) Sumner in Highland Park.
Mr. Sumner leaves behind a loving wife, Amy (Jeruzal) Sumner; two beautiful boys, Riley, 4, and Mitchell, age 2 1/2; his parents of Chelsea; and his brother, David.
Mr. Sumner loved life. He was an avid fisherman, planning extensive trips for anyone who would join him. His fondness for the outdoors initiated his interest in golfing and boating.
His collection of John Deere tractors kept growing as his boys continued to express their excitement for tractor rides. Mr. Sumner was often found surrounded by more friends than could be counted, grilling and sharing a glass of red wine.
His desire to be "on the go" led him to express one of his favorite quotes, "Hurry please!"
His ability to think fast on his feet is what made him an exceptional officer with a love for his job that few people ever experience. He achieved the rank of chief of police in Chelsea May 15, 2004. His attention to detail was always obvious in the way that every part of his person was perfectly groomed, including the absence of even a flick of lint on his uniform and the best "flat top" haircut anyone had ever seen.
Mr. Sumner touched thousands of people, including the youngest child and the eldest citizen, but most importantly the two boys that will always be grateful to have been able to call him "Daddy." He was often found driving them through the golf course or boating on the lake.
Mr. Sumner's quest for knowledge made him an expert at any topic he showed interest in, and he never hesitated to share his newfound knowledge. He was greatly loved by all, and is survived by his most loving in-laws, James and Jacquelyn (Michielsen) Jeruzal, Timothy Jeruzal and Cheryl Boglarsky, Harold and Patricia (Jeruzal) Hildenbrand, Christopher Jeruzal and Erin Montgomery.
A funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, 14200 Old US-12, in Chelsea. The Revs. William Turner, Mearl Bradley and Joy Barrett will officiate. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet cemetery in Chelsea.
The family received friends Tuesday and Wednesday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.
Memorial contributions may be made to an education fund to benefit Riley and Mitchell Sumner.
GEORGE A. WEST
Chelsea
George A. West, 90, of Chelsea died suddenly April 9, 2006, as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. He was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Sylvan Center the son of Charles and Ida (Hornberger) West.
Mr. West had lived in the Chelsea area all of his life. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 31, Chelsea Rod and Gun Club and Inverness Country Club. He retired from Dana Corp. in 1980 after 34 years of service.
Mr. West married
Ruby Ingram Dec. 21, 1938, in Angola, Ind. She also died in the accident.
Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Phillips of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Bernadine Hafley of Chelsea; two grandsons, Vaughn Budreau and Kevin Phillips, both of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond, and three sisters, Dorothy Truesdell, Eva Gregory and Atha Sunderg.
A memorial service for Mr. West and his wife will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Chelsea. The Rev. Dale Grimm will officiate. Burial will be at Maple Grove cemetery in Sylvan Center.
Memorial contributions may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church.

RUBY I. WEST
Chelsea
Ruby I. West, 87, of Chelsea died suddenly April 9, 2006, as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. She was born Feb. 26, 1919, in Charleston, W.Va., the daughter of Hack and Della (Joseph) Ingram.
Mrs. West had lived in the Chelsea area since 1938. She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and Inverness Country Club. She married
George West Dec. 21, 1938, in Angola, Ind. He also died in the accident.
Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Phillips of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Remont Morris of Westland and Maxine Morgan of California; two grandsons, Vaughn Budreau and Kevin Phillips, both of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Zirkle, Mabel Neal and Ruth Davy; and two brothers, John Ingram and William Ingram.
A memorial service for Mrs. West and her husband will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Chelsea. The Rev. Dale Grimm will officiate. Burial will be at Maple Grove cemetery in Sylvan Center.

WALLACE FOUTY
Litchfield
Formerly of Jackson
Wallace Fouty, 71, of Litchfield, formerly of Jackson, died April 4, 2006, at Bixby Hospital in Adrian. He was born Jan. 17, 1935, in Jackson, the son of Verl and Pearl Flossie (Skinner) Fouty.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Fouty of Jackson; one brother, Alva (Delores) of Chelsea; two sisters, Gloria (Ralph) Logan of Napoleon and Inez (Rick) Bunton of Ann Arbor; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Rosemarie and Laurie; his parents; three brothers, Gordon, Richard and Norman.
A private burial will be held at Griffith cemetery in Eaton Rapids.
Arrangements were by Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.
MARLENE M. BOOKS
Freeland
Marlene M. Books, 73, a beloved wife, sister, aunt and friend, of Freeland died April 7, 2006, and is now home with the Lord, her family said.
Mrs. Books was born Dec. 25, 1932, to the late Richard and Elsie (Witt) Conklin, and was lovingly raised by Sidney and Flora LaBrake in Saginaw. She attended and was active at Community Baptist Church in Shields, and Faith Baptist Church in Homosassa, Fla.
Mrs. Books graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1951. She married
Charles W. Books Aug. 29, 1959, and assisted her husband as he completed college in 1962. That same year, she moved to Cumberland, Md., with her husband to work on a campaign to raise money for a new hospital.
In 1964, she and her husband moved back to Michigan to work at a publishing company until 1973. Her last and most rewarding position was with the University of Michigan as an administrative assistant to the director of personnel. She retired from U of M in 1991.
Mrs. Books was known for her humor, love of life, and she delighted in her many nieces and nephews. As a member of Dexter Gospel Church in Dexter, she was active in the choir and the Ladies Missionary Group.
Mrs. Books also was an avid knitter, making well over 100 afghans and giving away virtually every one. The Bookses moved to the village of Unadilla, built their dream house on a 12-acre plot and lived there for 35 years.
Surviving in addition to her husband Chuck are her niece, Erika (Conklin) Larsen; nephew, Jason Conklin of Arizona; two brothers, William (Lorraine) and Sidney (Carol) LaBrake; three sisters, Joyce (Grant) Thormeier, Sally (Jack) Tihney of Saginaw and Nancy (Dave) LaBeau of Standish; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at Community Baptist Church in Saginaw. The Rev. Douglas Jackson officiated.

NOEL C. LARAWAY
Chelsea
Noel C. Laraway, 73, of Chelsea died April 8, 2006, at St Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1932, the daughter of the late John A. and Ella S. (Peterson) McMillan in Ironwood.
Mrs. Laraway enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and would make them macaroni and cheese. She also would cook for other people and entertain at her house, where she was known for asking, "Are you hungry?" She also had a longstanding appointment with friend Carol Satterthwaite for coffee.
Mrs. Laraway is survived by her children, Patti (John) Schick of Chelsea, Pam Laraway-Dietz of Chelsea and John Jr. (Rose) Laraway of Howell.
Also surviving are her grandchildren, Sarah (Marty) Sherwood, Jay (Mindy) Schick, Margaret Schick, J.T. Laraway, Linda Laraway, Jacob Laraway, Gary Sabin and Sean Sabin, as well as one great-grandchild, Andrew Sherwood.
She is also survived by her ex-husband, John Sr., special family friend, Carol Satterthwaite.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Charlotte Osinski.
A funeral was held Tuesday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home. Deacon Tom Franklin officiated. A private burial will be held at later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children Hospital.
