Ralph Corrigan

Ralph John Corrigan, 95, formerly of Mackinac Island, died Sunday, April 17, 2005, after many years in a California nursing home.

Mr. Corrigan was born September 5, 1909, on Mackinac Island.

With no high school on the Island at the time, Mr. Corrigan left Mackinac and went to New York, where he worked designing jewelry. He contracted tuberculosis, as many did in those days, but was able to recover. He later took up residence in San Francisco, California, but in the summer he often returned to the Island to his home on Mahoney Avenue. Mr. Corrigan never learned to drive and usually traveled by bus, occasionally visiting his brother and family, John Corrigan, in Garden City.

He was preceded in death by his younger sister, Margaret, in 1942 and his older brother, John, in 1982.

He is survived by his nephews, John, Michael, Anthony, and Robert Corrigan and their families.

His ashes will be returned to Mackinac Island for burial in the family plot in Ste. Anne’s cemetery.

Elizabeth Methner

Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Methner of Pickford was teacher for 34 years. She taught at several different schools around Michigan, the Upper Peninsula, the Traverse City area, in DeTour, and then in Pickford from which she retired in 1971.

Mrs. Methner was 98 when she died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida.

She was born March 2, 1907 in Ironwood, Michigan to Henry and Anna (nee Olds) Eplett.

She grew up in Ironwood, then earned a teaching certificate at the former Normal Teachers College (now Northern Michigan University) in Marquette. She later earned a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in East Lansing.

She married Henry Amos Methner September 27, 1940.

She had been living in Pickford, but spent each winter in Clearwater, Florida. She was a member of the Pickford Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, and the Donovan Park Choir in Florida.

An avid reader, Mrs. Methner also enjoyed fishing, gardening, knitting, and working on crossword puzzles. Her family said they enjoyed many happy memories of times they spent with Mrs. Methner.

Mrs. Methner is survived by many nieces and nephews, including those closest to her: Ann Shannon, Michael Shannon, Katherine Foley, Patricia Hammond, David Eplett, Ralph Eplett, Ann Slanzi, Marilyn Nygard, Cleland Methner, and Jean Valley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry in 1993, and nine siblings: Henry Eplett, Viola Hammel, Verona Shannon, Ruth Fleischmann, Dell Eplett, Norman Eplett, and three others who died during childhood.

Services were Monday, May 2, at the Pickford Presbyterian Church in Pickford. The Reverend Ron Bown officiating.

Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.

Donations in Mrs. Methner's name can be made to the Pickford Public Schools Library, P.O. Box 278, Pickford 49774.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford made arrangements for the family.

Victor Beaune Sr.

Victor J. Beaune Sr., 59, of Brimley and Mackinac Island, died Friday afternoon, April 29, 2005, at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor following a short illness.

He was born May 10, 1945, in Sault Ste. Marie, to Edward and Lottie (nee McPhee) Beaune.

Mr. Beaune worked for Mackinac Island Carriage Tours for 41 years, starting when he was 18. He was in maintenance and was also a farrier.

Mr. Beaune married Margaret “Terry” LaPine of Mackinac Island December 22, 1970, in Newberry, and she survives. He is also survived by a son, Victor Jr. of Mackinac Island; two daughters, Tina Beaune of Sault Ste. Marie and Nicole Beaune of Mackinac Island; five brothers and their families, Eugene and Mary Jane of Mason, Edward and Jean of Grand Ledge, William and Gloria of Kinross, Joseph of Holt, and Thomas and Linda of Sunfield; a sister, Ann Schnepp of New York; and eight grandchildren, Christopher, Aaron, Jessica, Samuel, Jonathon, Alysia, Elizabeth, and James.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret and Theresa; a brother, Phillip; and a son, Wesley John Beaune, who died in an automobile accident September 26, 2002.

Friends called at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace Tuesday, May 3, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with prayers at 8 p.m. with Deacon Don Olmstead officiating. Services will be Wednesday, May 4, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Father Jim Williams of Ste. Anne’s Catholic Church officiating.

Cremation will follow and burial will be at Ste. Anne’s cemetery on Mackinac Island at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the family of Victor Beaune Sr., with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Lorene Nunn

Lorene Elsie Nunn, 80, of North Street, died Friday, April 29, 2005, in Dearborn.

She was born September 12, 1924, in Pickford, to James and Janet (nee Stewart) Steele.

She worked for many years in the Port Huron area. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and fishing. Family members and friends remember her for her Christmas fruitcake, fried green tomatoes, and her great sense of humor.

Mrs. Nunn is survived by her husband, Vere Nunn, whom she married on June 23, 1948 in St. Ignace; a sister, Ruby Ruona of Alma; one brother, Greeley Steele of Marysville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Isabelle Owaski, Dorothy Anderson and Inez Nordstrom, and by one brother, Bill Steele.

Services will be Wednesday, May 4, at noon, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral.

Burial will be in Cottle cemetery in Marquette Township, Pickford.

Clifford Wartella

Clifford A. Wartella of Newcastle, Washington, died July 29, 2005, at the Valley Medical Center in Renton, Washington, following a short illness.

Mary Edward

Mary V. “Sally” Edward, 80, of Brimley, passed away Monday morning, August 15, 2005 at War Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Edwards was born on Mackinac Island May 17, 1925, the daughter of the late Ozro and Mary (Perrault) Smith. She was a Sault Tribe Elder.

She really enjoyed sewing, knitting, and making crafts for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed growing plants and flowers. She is the widow of William H. Fallstich, who passed away in 1966. She later married Clair S. Edward December 10, 1967.

She is survived by her husband, Clair; three daughters and their families, Hazel Skelton of Sault Ste. Marie, Jean and George Cowell of Lake Mills, Wisconsin, and Julie Strader of Taylor; two sons and their families, William Fallstich of Watertown, Wisconsin, and Eric and Betty Fallstich of Crofton, Maryland; a daughter-in-law, Janis Fallstich of Wyandotte; 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Nova Therrien of Sault Ste. Marie, Onalee Cable of Wyandotte, and Donna Weston of Raber; two brothers, Ray Smith of Garden City and Donald Smith of Sault Ste. Marie, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, a grandson, J.C. Cowell, and a sister, June Brown.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 17, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home in Sault Ste Marie. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 18, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Raappana officiating.

Burial will be at Pine Grove cemetery.

Donald Vallier

Donald Vallier, 65, of New Harmony, Indiana, died Thursday, July 14, 2005, at the New Harmony Healthcare center.

Surviving is a son, Daniel Vallier of New Harmony, Indiana, a sister, Marianna Tromblay of Parker, Arizona, a brother, Edward Vallier of California, and a grandson, Nick.

He was preceded in death by his parents Francis and Constance (nee Hansen) Vallier.

The body was cremated, with the burial in St. Ignace.

Services were held Wednesday, July 20, at the St. Ignatius Loyola Church with Deacon Donald Olmstead officiating. Werry Funeral Home New Harmony Chapel of New Harmony, Indiana and Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace assisted the family.

Elaine Rollins

Elaine Ruth Rollins, 77, of Cedarville died Thursday, August 4, 2005 in Marquette.

She was born July 9, 1928, in Pigeon, to William and Augusta (nee Thurau) Krutzina.

She grew up in Ferndale.

In 1949, she married Glenn Eugene Rollins at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Royal Oak. They raised their family in Mount Clemens.

In the late 1980s, they moved to Cedarville, and spent the winters in Clearwater, Florida.

Mrs. Rollins was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in DeTour Village.

She was an avid reader. She enjoyed yard work, flower gardening, and refinishing antiques.

She is survived by her loving husband, Glenn; one son and his family, Christopher and Bonnie Rollins of Punta Gorda, Florida; one daughter, Carrie and Robert Fellmy of Mount Clemens; three grandchildren, Alexander Rollins, Megan Sauve, and Michael Sauve; and one sister, Emma Stewart of Clearwater.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Alma Banks and Esther Motrick; and one brother, William Krutzina.

The family had a private memorial service at Redeemer Lutheran Church in DeTour Village.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home of Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.

Mary Milton

Mary B. Milton, a resident of Henry Ford Village in Dearborn and former Mackinac Island cottager, passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2005, at her home. She was 78.

Mrs. Milton and her husband, Robert, whom she married June 22, 1946, lived in Buffalo, New York, and came to Mackinac Island in the 1950s, renting the George Schermerhorn cottage on the West Bluff until 1959, when they purchased the Miles Zoeller cottage. They sold the cottage in 1990 and built a new home in the Annex, which they sold in 1998 when they moved to Dearborn.

Mrs. Milton was an expert horsewoman and was prominent in the formation of the Mackinac Island Horse Show and in the later development of the Mackinac Island Horsemen’s Association.

The couple reared three children, and one of them, M. Gillian Sanders, preceded her parents in death.

Surviving are her daughter, Suzi Padilla of Grosse Pointe, her son and family, David and Vicki Milton, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Dr. Milton, a chemist with Union Carbide, died February 16, 2000.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 21, in the Chapel of Henry Ford Village.

Memorials may be made to the Mackinac Island Recreational Development Fund of the Mackinac Island Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1933, Mackinac Island, MI 49781.

Arrangements were made by Dearborn Chapel of the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home.

Randy Clear

Randy Lee Clear of Mackinaw City passed away unexpectedly from a massive heart attack at his home Wednesday, November 16, 2005.

He was born in Cheboygan August 14 to Lester and Lois (nee Terrian) Clear. He was graduated from Pellston High School and was employed at the Mackinaw City Big Boy for 11 years.

Mr. Clear was a vegetarian and an animal lover; he loved dancing and music. He was quick witted and his sense of humor brought laughs and smiles to those around him, friends said.

Mr. Clear is survived by his mother, Lois, of St. Ignace, his father, Lester, of Levering, his brother, Chris, of Ionia, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He also leaves behind his two cats, Lucifer and Toonces.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life has been held.

Memorial contributions may be directed to his mother, Lois, in care of Nordman Funeral Home in Cheboygan.

Michael Beard

Michael W. Beard, 20, of St. Ignace, died Tuesday, November 16, 2005, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
