MARIBETH BENNETT SOULE

Chelsea

Formerly of Fremont

Maribeth Soule, of Chelsea, formerly of Fremont, died suddenly Sept. 14, 2006, succumbing to congestive heart failure. She grew up in a family of 10 children in Fremont, the daughter of Carson and Mary Elizabeth Mahan Bennett.

Mrs. Soule met David Soule in Ann Arbor, and married him 55 years ago. They raised five children, Carson, Andrew, Donald, Russell and Beth Elaine.

Mrs. Soule shepherded her family through lean years with unbounded energy. The memories of her legendary cooking and generosity with recipes are vivid. The family threads are still woven together, pulled firm by her open arms, her unflagging energy, her abundant good will, her do-it-right-ness.

She was a spirited church member in each of her communities, also living in Bladensburg, Md., and Albuquerque, N.M.

Mrs. Soule loved camping; crafted afghans, threw pottery, dipped hand-made chocolates for all; taught typing and business; was a fervent and serious-yet-buoyant competitor in all games - to her grandchildren's delight. She was a passionate reader and avid book club member. More than any of her many avocations and interests, she adored bridge and played until the very end.

Mrs. Soule's sadness was to be preceded in death by two of her sons, Russell Houghton and Andrew Soule. Both were beloved and tended by her in their deaths.

Mrs. Soule is survived by her siblings Carson, Lucy and Stella.

Also surviving her are her husband, David; children, Carson, Donald and Beth Elaine; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services have been arranged at Paradise Hills First Methodist Church in Rio Ranco, N.M., and in Maryland at a later date.

Mrs. Gentner took great pride in her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved to travel. She enjoyed visiting one of her favorite destinations, Hawaii, several times, as well as a trip to Switzerland, France and Germany.

Her hobbies included reading and caring for her many houseplants and garden flowers, and she never turned down a chance to go shopping.

Mrs. Gentner was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church of Chelsea and was married in the church parsonage May 8, 1925. Other than a brief period in Dexter and Ann Arbor following her marriage, she spent her entire life in Chelsea.

Mrs. Gentner enjoyed visiting other parts of the world, but always was pleased to return to her home and family in Chelsea. In February 2004, she moved from Chelsea to the Saline Evangelical Home.

On July 28, 2005, a party was held at the Saline Evangelical Home to honor Mrs. Gentner on her 100th birthday. The party, attended by 30 friends and family members, was a huge success, her family said. Mrs. Gentner enjoyed the festivities and even wore a tiara given to her by one of her granddaughters.

In July 2006, a small party was held in honor of her 101st birthday. "And, yes, she even blew out all the candles, " her family said.

Surviving are three sons, Ronald (Nancy) Gentner of Stockbridge, Duane (Carole) Gentner of Parker, Colo., and Terry Gentner of Chelsea; one brother, Robert Abdon of Chelsea; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
