JOYCE E. SHILLING

Stockbridge

Formerly of Ann Arbor

Joyce E. Shilling, 73, of Stockbridge, formerly of Ann Arbor, died April 27, 2006, at the University of Michigan Hospital. She was born Aug. 19, 1932, in McBride the daughter of Elliott and Alice (Harmer) Bellows.

Mrs. Shilling enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, watching the Tigers on television, painting birdhouses, cooking, canning and baking. She was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1950 to 1953.

The love of her life was Melvin H. Shilling, and he preceded her in death in 1978.

Surviving are two daughters, Virginia "Ginger" Powell of Ann Arbor and Donna (David) Frayer of Stockbridge; two grandchildren that she loved dearly, Al Powell and Lance Frayer; and a 1 great-granddaughter, Taylor Powell.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Michael Bellows, and one sister, Patricia Smith.

Private services will be held. Burial will take place at Graceland cemetery in Grand Rapids.

Memorial contributions may be made to Veterans Hospital of Ann Arbor, University of Michigan Cancer Center or Disabled Americans Veterans.

Arrangements were by Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

MARY HARRIS

Chelsea

Mary Harris, 89, of Chelsea, a resident of Silver Maples, died March 27, 2006, with her family beside her.

For most of her life, Mrs. Harris lived in Howard City, where she raised her family and taught elementary school. She enjoyed her family gatherings and looking at her family photos.

Years ago, Mrs. Harris and her husband raised champion Great Danes, including Champion Kim II.

Mrs. Harris was a special and loving person who will be deeply missed.

She was preceded in death by James, her husband of 68 years.

She is survived by four children, 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her son, William, his wife, Nancy, and their youngest daughter, Kelsey, reside in Chelsea.

Services celebrating her life were held in Howard City and at Silver Maples.

LOUIS KOCH

Dexter

Louis Koch, 92, of Dexter died March 7, 2006, with his wife, June, and loved ones by his side.

Mr. Koch lived a long and happy life. He was employed by King Seeley for many years and then started his own electrical business, Koch Electric, which he had for 20 years until he retired in 1979.

He and June, his wife of 69 years, owned a cottage at Joslin Lake for many years. They had many happy times there with family and friends.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Janet (Ernest) Aldrich and Dianne (Richard) Fowler; grandchildren, Pamela (Robert) Gomberg, Timothy (Sherry) Aldrich, Dawn, Darrin and Dennis (Regina) Fowler.

Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Stephanie Gomberg and her fiance Joseph Dinkel, Nicholas (Michelle) Aldrich, Jason, Jennifer, Scott and Laura Aldrich, and Daniel and Benjamin Fowler; several nieces and nephews; two half-brothers, James and Robert Blythman; and half-sister Ester.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Koch and Louise Koch Blythman; two sisters, Helen Kuebler and Pauline Schneider, a niece, Betty Schimelfenig; and nephew, Richard Schneider.

A funeral was held March 11 at Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel.

BUCK RISNER

Gregory

Buck Risner, 71, of Gregory died March 10, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Risner was born April 8, 1934, in Magoffin County, Ky., the son of Everett and Mary (Fitch) Risner. He had lived in Gregory for the past eight years and retired from Rockwell International in Chelsea after 32 years. He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Chelsea and enjoyed woodworking, his garden and his granddaughters.

On July 11, 1953, he married Frances and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Marjorie (James) Bies of Gregory; one brother, Lawrence (Judy) Risner of Dexter; two sisters, Pearlie (Willard) Risner of Salyersville, Ky., and Annalee Buchanan of Grayling; two granddaughters, Nicole Bies of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Jessica (David Klink) Bies of Waterloo.

Funeral services were held March 13 from the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. The Rev. Jack Story of Faith Baptist Church in Chelsea officiated. Burial followed at Oak Grove East in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to Livingston County Hospice.

RICKY SALYER

Chelsea

Ricky Salyer, 57, of Chelsea died March 10, 2006, at his home.

He was born June 17, 1948, in Salyersville, Ky., the son of South and Bernice Sayler. Ricky had lived in the area most of his life. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and being with his friends.

On Dec. 30, 2004, he married Paula E. Holt, and she survives. Also surviving are his mother of Chelsea; two children, Jason (Chandra) Salyer of Ypsilanti and Alan Lowe of Ann Arbor; one sister, Marcella Mimic of Tenn.; two grandchildren, Addison and Brody; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A funeral was held March 14 at Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home. The Rev. Jeff Howard officiated. Burial was at Oak Grove cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Salyer family.

Emory James Miller

Dexter

Miller, Emory James Miller, 67, died March 8, 2006.

He was born July 7, 1938 in Northfield Township, the son of Ruth W. (nee Thurston) and Fred L. Miller. He spent a majority of his life working for several area farmers. He also worked for CF Braun, and in 1978 he received a commendation for saving a fellow employee's life during a fire, in which he was badly burned. He lived and worked for his special Aunt Ida Mae Laraway "Granny" at her rubbish hauling business, Laraway Rubbish. After her death in 1984, he went to live with his sister, Dorothy Conklin, and became the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor at Orchard Grove Manufactured Homes.

Emory loved helping people and enjoyed taking flowers and fresh vegetables, in season, to his friends and family. He was a very caring person and always thought of others.

He is survived by his two sisters, Alice Rose and Dorothy (Ben) Conklin; brother, Eddie Miller; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends, including special friends, Laura and Daniel VanSteenis. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lyle; two infant brothers; and a sister, Mary.

The funeral service was held March 13 at the Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Dexter Area Fire Department, 4140 Main Street, Dexter, MI 48130 or Make a Wish Foundation, 3390 Pine Tree Road, Suite 20, Lansing, MI 48911.

JOHN A. WALL

Lake City

John A. Wall, 77, of Lake City, died March 4, 2006 at the Lake City Nursing Home.

He was born Nov. 6, 1928 in Ann Arbor. He graduated from Dexter High School in 1946. He entered the Army in 1946, served during WWII and was discharged in 1948. After he was discharged, he attended Niagara University in Niagara, N.Y. He graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree. He worked at the Ford Motor Plant for a short time before he became a pilot. He then worked as a pilot for North Central Airlines in Michigan. He married Roberta Apitz May 2, 1964 at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Clontarf, Minn. They lived in St. Paul were John was a pilot for Republic Air Lines for 29 years. They moved to Lake City in 1975. He retired from Republic Air Lines in 1986. Roberta died Jan. 10, 2000.

John was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake City. He also taught confirmation at St. Mary's for over 20 years. John was selected as Southern Minnesota Tree Farmer of the Year in 2002.

He is survived by one son, Patrick (Lisa) of Costa Mesa, Calif.; one daughter, Kathleen (Brian) Wernecke of Rochester; and a granddaughter, Erin Wall. John was preceded by his wife; one sister, Dorothy Moorman; and one brother, William Wall.

A Mass of Christian burial was held March 9 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake City with Father James Russell officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery in Lake City. A Rosary service was held March 8.

GEORGE E. KNOPF

Grosse Pointe Woods

George E. Knopf, 88, of Grosse Pointe Woods died Feb. 27, 2006, at Chelsea Retirement Community.

He was the beloved husband of Esther; dear father of Ruth Ann (Chuck) Corwin and Robert (Sandra) Knopf; much-loved grandfather of Cara, Case, Heidi, Robert, Katie, Michael, Casey and Jula; and great-grandfather of Carlee.

He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Knopf's greatest joy was his family and his devotion to Christ. He will be missed.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. Friday until the service noon at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, in Grosse Pointe Woods.

Memorial contribution may be made to the Grosse Pointe Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 21336 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.

ERNEST WILLIAM WENK

Chelsea

Ernest William Wenk, 91, of Chelsea died Jan. 26, 2006, at the Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born June 9, 1914, in Freedom Township.

Mr. Wenk was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, a former member of Lutheran Brotherhood of Zion and former church council member.

Mr. Wenk and his father owned and operated a sawmill, which was located just north of the family farm. He enjoyed deer hunting, trapping and fishing.

On Feb. 7, 1942, he married Edna M. Horning, and she survives. Also surviving are two children, William (Marlene) Wenk of Denver and Carolyn (Patrick) McNamara of Ann Arbor; one brother, Norman (Lorena) Wenk of Chelsea; three grandchildren, Brian Wenk, and Ryan and Erin McNamara; sisters- and brother-in-law, Dorothy Wenk of Chelsea, Margaret Horning of Manchester and George and Marian Pickell of Chelsea; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Kenneth Wenk; two brothers, Elmer and Erwin Wenk; and two sisters, Rubena Loeffler and Edna Burkhardt.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church. The Rev. Doris Sparks officiated. Burial followed at Zion Lutheran Church cemetery. The family received friends at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.

GLADYS M. HELEK

Grass Lake

Formerly of Chelsea

Gladys M. Helek, 87, of Grass Lake, formerly of Chelsea, died Jan. 26, 2006, at Cedar Knoll Care Facility. She was born Nov. 1, 1918, in Ithaca, the daughter of Charles and Myrtle (Ebright) Worden.

Mrs. Helek had lived in the area since 1985, coming from Oscoda. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea for several years. She retired from the Ann Arbor School District in 1980.

Surviving are two sons, Douglas Helek of Chelsea and Charles B. Rowe of Harrieta; two brothers, Ivan Welch of Bay City and Jack Welch-Garrison of Fair Grove; two sisters, Ruby Martin of Bay City and Betty Jean Koonce of Bloomfield; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Russell L. Rowe, and her second husband, George Helek.

A funeral was held Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. William Turner officiated. Burial was at Washtenong Memorial Park in Ann Arbor.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church. The family received friends at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.

CARL HERMAN KLINK

Chelsea

Carl Herman Klink, 88, of Chelsea died Jan. 21, 2006, at his home. He was born Jan. 14, 1918, in Lyndon Township, the son of John George and Mathilda (Keck) Klink.

Mr. Klink lived in Chelsea all his life. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, and retired from Chrysler Proving Grounds in 1981.

Mr. Klink loved going to Big Boy and enjoyed working in his garden.

On Sept. 20, 1958, he married Elenor Esther Eisele at St. Paul church in Chelsea, and she preceded him in death July 5, 2005.

Survivors include a son, Roland J. (Vera L.) Klink of Chelsea; a granddaughter, Katie Klink of Chelsea; one brother, Albert Klink; one sister, Pauline (Klink) Hawkins; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, William and John, and one sister, Louise (Klink) Altenberndt.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Chelsea. The Rev. Karen Schulte officiated. Burial followed at Oak Grove cemetery in Chelsea.

The family received friends Tuesday at Cole Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ.
