Elma Haapala

Elma Haapala of Newberry was a homemaker who enjoyed baking, her great-grandchildren, and crossword puzzles. She died at the age of 92 Monday morning, November 21, 2005, at her home.

She was born September 2, 1913 in Newberry, to David and Maria (nee Luoma) Honkonen and was a 1931 graduate of Newberry High School. She married Edward Haapala September 8, 1934, in Newberry.

She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry.

Mrs. Haapala is survived by her son and his family, Charles and Doris Haapala of Naubinway; two grandchildren and their families, Cheryl and Gregg Belleville of Clinton Township, and David and Krista Haapala of Traverse City; three great-grandchildren, Evan Belleville, Colin Belleville, and William Haapala; two sisters, Katherine Baine and Sally Hockstad, both of Newberry, and a nephew and his family, David and Marcia Mahn of Newberry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edward, October 14, 1997, and by four siblings, Charles and William Honkonen, Ida Honkonen, and Laina Mahn.

Services will be Wednesday, November 23, at 11 a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Pastor Tom Evans will officiate.

Interment will be at Forest Home cemetery in Newberry.

Memorials can be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Beaulieu Funeral Home of Newberry assisted the family with arrangements.

Frances Hornbacker

Frances C. Hornbacker, 54, passed away at her home in Engadine Wednesday November 16, 2005.

Frances Sustrich

Frances “Fran” B. Sustrich, 88, of Curtis, died at the Tendercare Nursing Facility in Munising Wednesday, November 16, 2005, where she had been a resident for 10 days.

Frank Kramen

Frank H. Kramen, a former Hessel resident, died at the age of 81 Monday, November 14, 2005, at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend, Kansas.

He previously worked as a design engineer for Fuller Brush Company and Doerr Metal Products of Larned, Kansas.

Mr. Kramen was born December 12, 1923, in Hessel, to Henry and Mary Perkins Kramen. The Kramen family operated the Kramen Boat Works of Hessel on Hessel Bay during the early 1900s.

Mr. Kramen married Lynette Booth September 13, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio.

He is a veteran of the United States Navy, and served in World War II in the Pacific, on the United States Submarine, Gabilan.

He was a member of the Christian Science Church and the Optimist Club of Great Bend, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lynette Kramen of Great Bend, one sister and her family, Frances Dutcher of Hessel, and one granddaughter, Hannah Ash of Burlington, Vermont.

He was preceded in death by his son, Charles Kramen, his daughter, Kathryn Kay Kramen, and three sisters, Bertha Bawks, Ellen Dutcher, and Theresa Miller.

Services, with full military honors conducted by the United States Naval Guard, were Saturday, November 19, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Great Bend Optimist Club of Kansas, the B-29 Memorial Fund, or the Word of Life Fellowship. Donations can be made through the Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend, Kansas 67530.

Florence Kauer

Florence Lillian Kauer of Kinross lived in Cleveland, Ohio, for many years, where she worked as a Purchasing Agent for the Bailey Department Store chain. In 1998, she moved to Kinross to be near her brother and his family.

Ms. Kauer was 83 when she died Tuesday, November 15, 2005, at Tendercare in Sault Ste. Marie.

She was born February 9, 1922, in Cleveland to Henry and Lillian May (nee Danley) Kauer.

She is survived by her brother and his wife, Darwin R. and Betty Kauer of Kinross; nine nieces and nephews and their families, David and Luanne Kauer, Pamela and Jeffrey Donaldson, Darcy and Nadine Kauer, Douglas and Ellen Kauer, Darell Kauer, Mark and Denise Kauer, Beth Ann and Bill Eide, Wendy and John Kennedy, and Wanda and Bruce Osborn, and 10 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Henry "Bud" Kauer and David Kauer.

A graveside service was held Thursday, November 17, at Kinross Township Lakeview cemetery.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.

Keith Hokenson

Keith Orlando Hokenson of Rudyard worked at Soo Plastics, American Drillbox, and Burton Excavating of Sault Ste. Marie. Several years ago, he and his brother started working together in a metal salvage business.

Mr. Hokenson was 36 when he died Wednesday, November 16, 2005, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. He had been ill since August.

He was born June 26, 1969, in Manistique. He grew up in Curtis and Pickford. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and reading.

He married Valerie Harwood February 14, 1997, in Sault Ste. Marie.

Mr. Hokenson is survived by his wife of eight years, Valerie; his stepson, Jacob Harwood of Rudyard; his parents, Jay and Colleen Roe of Pickford, and one brother, David Wayne Hokenson of Bath.

A memorial service will be held Friday, November 25, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kincheloe. Pastor Charles B. Burhop will officiate. Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford is assisting the family with arrangements.

Richard Payment

Richard Lewis Payment Sr. of Hessel worked many years for the United States Forest Service as an equipment operator. Family members and friends remember him as "a prankster, who had an extraordinary sense of humor."

Mr. Payment died at the age of 54 Sunday, November 6, 2005 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was born June 22, 1951, in Sault Ste. Marie, to William H. and Lucille Agnes (nee Gregg) Payment.

Mr. Payment grew up in Sault Ste. Marie and was graduated in 1970 from Sault High School.

He married Penny Joy Gagnon February 20, 1971, at St. James Episcopal Church in Sault Ste. Marie. They moved their family to Hessel in 1990.

Mr. Payment enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Penny; two sons and their families, Richard Lewis Payment Jr. of St. Ignace, and Ronnie Gene and Michelle Payment of Pickford; two daughters and their families, Roxanna Marie and Donnell "Bubba" Avery of Sault Ste. Marie, and Robin May and Carl Soderlund of St. Ignace; six grandchildren, Chelsey Payment, Cody Payment, Tylor Payment, Calvin Fleury, Stephanie Avery, and Christopher Avery; four brothers and their families, William G. and Laurie Payment of Sault Ste. Marie, Orville and Donna Payment of Sault Ste. Marie, James and Janice Payment of Kinross, and Leo and Crystal Payment of Douglasville, Georgia, and one sister-in-law, Janet Payment of Highland Township.

Mr. Payment was preceded in death by his parents and by one brother, Gerald Payment.

Memorial services will be private.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home of Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.

Merle Lambertson

Merle Lambertson, a longtime St. Ignace resident and owner of the former Red Owl store in St. Ignace, died Sunday, November 6, 2005 in New Braunfels, Texas.

Mable McGahey

Mable Irene Carver McGahey, of Dafter, died November 1, 2005, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

She was born July 24, 1920, in Brimley. She enjoyed playing bingo and traveling, and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Rudyard.

Mrs. McGahey was preceded in death by three husbands, Glenn McGahey, Gordon Carver, and Chester McGahey, a step-son, William Carver, five brothers, William, John, Wilford, Morris, and Howard Meehan, a sister, Myrtle Meehan, and her parents, Francis and Verna (nee Cawley) Meehan.

She is survived by two sons and their families, Richard and Mary McGahey of Dafter, and James and Dorothy Carver of Whittaker, California, two step-sons and their families, Donald and Ingrid Carver of Wolverine, and Robert and Elaine Carver of Indian River, one sister, Mary Etta Dear of Flint, one brother, Jerome Meehan of Nashville, 18 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Thursday, November 3, at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home and a funeral mass was Friday, November 4, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rudyard with Father Cyriac Kottayarikil presiding.

Esther Wightman

Esther L. Wightman, 85, of Mackinac Island, died Monday, November 7, 2005, at her home on Mackinac Island.

Arrangements are being made by Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace.

Alfred ‘Pete’ Peters Jr.

Alfred “Pete” Peters Jr., 79, of Moran, a carpenter and contractor who worked on the Mackinac Bridge and the Soo Locks and who enjoyed helping many others with building projects, died Wednesday, November 2, 2005, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey, following a short illness.

He was born March 16, 1926 in Vanderbilt to Alfred Sr. and Tracy (nee Fitzek) Peters.

He was a carpenter and contractor all of his life.

He was inducted into the Army July 21, 1944, and served for more than two years. In June, 1946, he was discharged as a Staff Sergeant and had served overseas for more than a year in Germany, Rhinelar, and Central Europe.

He worked after the service for Ozark Cabinet and Lumber Co. in Ozark, then started P&K Construction and ran that for 11 years, and he worked on the building of the Mackinac Bridge and Soo Locks as a union carpenter. He was building inspector for Brevort Township and the township treasurer, and was also a member of the Brevort Township Fire Department. He was active in the Zion Lutheran Church.

Mr. Peters was one of the founders of Robinson-Dolan VFW Post No. 5114 in St. Ignace and active in the honor guard unit.

On June 16, 1951, he married Lorraine Hansen at Zion Lutheran Church in Allenville.

Mr. Peters was the caretaker for dozens of homes at Brevort Lake, and in winters he cut wood and logged, until he was past 78 years old. He was a bowler and played darts, and friends said and was the only one who played backwards. He loved to hunt and fish, and was an excellent ball player, turning down an offer to play professional baseball as a pitcher. He grew a large garden and picked berries, any kind, but loved blueberries and cranberries. His family said he would drive a hundred miles for a new berry patch.

He will be missed by his family and everyone who knew him. He could never say “no” when asked for a favor or help with a project or anyone’s home, friends said.

Mr. Peters is survived by his wife; two sons and their families, Michael and Vicki Peters of Allenville and Larry and Linda Peters of Rudyard; a daughter and her family, Robin and Art Bahr of Mount Pleasant; a brother, Harold “Buster” and Pauline Peters of Rexton; grandchildren and their families, Amy and Chris, Jeremy and Michelle, Jessey and Mary Cody, Shaylin, and Lara; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Torie, Miranda, Marah, and Kaylee. Also surviving is his best friend, Sandy, a golden retriever.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Marjie Dishaw, and brothers, Lawrence “Pudge” and Marvin.

A memorial service was held Monday, November 7, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Allenville, with Pastor David Letscher officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Buster Peters, Don Lugering, Vern Erskine, Donald Dishaw, and Art Bahr. The Brevort Township Fire Department served as honor guard, as did the VFW members of Post No. 5114.

Memorials may be directed to the church, with envelopes available from Dodson Funeral Home, which assisted the family with arrangements.

Graveside services will be held later at Brevort Township cemetery.

John Hicks Jr.

John C. Hicks Jr., of Detroit, died November 1, 2005.

He was born November 30, 1939, to John and Audrey Hicks of the Detroit area.

Mr. Hicks was the past commander of the Royal Oak American Legion. He was active with the Royal Oak Elks, Canadian Legion, Dads of Foreign Service, VFW, Moose, and the Eagles. He served in the United States Air Force.

Mr. Hicks enjoyed coming to the Upper Peninsula in the summer, family members said.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mitzi Hardy.

He is survived by five children and their families, John and Shirley Hicks of Morrow, Georgia, Diana Gardner of St. Ignace, Mike Hicks of Aurora, Colorado, Kelly and Dan Sears of Sault Ste. Marie, and Erica Hahn of Warren, 16 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Services were Tuesday, November 8, at the Parkside Church of Christ in Dearborn Heights. His son, John Hicks, gave the eulogy.
