Earl Emond
KINGSFORD - Earl 'Gus' Emond, 73, of 620 Johns St., Kingsford, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at a family gathering. He was surrounded by his family and friends.
Earl was born Nov. 18, 1929, in Kingsford, son of the late Charles and Ethel (Gomber) Emond. He was a lifelong resident of Kingsford. He married Janice Stebbins in October of 1957 in a chapel at KI Sawyer Air Force Base. Earl enjoyed time at his camp with his wife, children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Janice; two sons, Raymond and Marvin, both of Kingsford; two daughters, Carol (Tim) Pietsch and Holly (John) Pearce, both of Kingsford; nine grandchildren; a great-grandson; three brothers, Neil 'sparky' (Barbara) Emond of Iiwaco, Wash., Norbert 'Bing' (Lucille) Emond and Ronald 'Bozo' (Charlotte) Emond, both of Iron Mountain; a sister, Arlene 'Midge' (Earl) Grau of Littleton, Colo., and several nieces and nephews.
Earl was preceded in death by a sister, Marlene Dahlgren.
Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the Kingsford Funeral Home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Quinnesec cemetery.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Kingsford.

Helen Feira
IRON MOUNTAIN - Helen Estelle Feira, 90, of Victorian Pines, Iron Mountain, formerly of 720 Hamilton Ave., Kingsford, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born Sept. 25, 1912, in Hancock, daughter of the late Arthur 'Pete' and Agnes (Ongie) Fournier. Helen married James Feira on June 24, 1939, in Hancock, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 23, 2000. She was a member of the Iron Mountain Women's Club, and served some 30 years with the Hospital League. She also served on the hospitality committee for Hyland Nursing Home and volunteered with the local Red Cross for 30 years. Helen was a member of the United Commercial Travelers (UCT) and the Daughters of Isabella of Iron Mountain. She was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church of Iron Mountain for 50 years and a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace of Kingsford for the past five years.
She is survived by three sons, Robert (Dolly) Feira of Wausau, Wis., John Feira of Green Bay, Wis., and Gary (Kelly) Feira of Bridgeport, lower Michigan; a daughter, Nancy (Rodger) Kuczynski of Holman, Wis.; grandchildren, Kristin, Melissa Kuczynski, Dawn Kranski, James and Amanda Feira, Carolyn, Nicholas and Tony Feira, and a great-grandson, Ryan.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Agnes Gardiner.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Michael Woempner will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Elve DeLano
IRON MOUNTAIN - Elve DeLano, 93, formerly of 1300 Michigan Ave., Iron Mountain, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Florence Villa Nursing Home in Florence.
She was born Feb. 16, 1909, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Eric and Hilda (Nordlund) Carlson. Elve married Lee DeLano on April 6, 1927, and he preceded her in death on March 24, 1992. She and her husband lived in Waukesha, Wis. for many years, where Elve worked in accounts payable at Waukesha Motors. They returned to this area following their retirement.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Helmer, Gerhard, Albin and Robert Carlson, and three sisters, Hilder Weber, Linnea Erickson and Edith Schinderle.
Elve was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iron Mountain. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting, flower gardening and decorating her home.
Elve is survived by two brothers, Roy (Illa) Carlson of Waukesha, Wis., and Oliver (Harriet) Carlson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Agnes Bundy of Waukesha, Wis., and Stella (Elmer) Roberts of Iron Mountain, and many nieces and nephews who loved her.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Rev. Peter Jonas will officiate. Burial will be in the Brookside cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to the First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Kenneth Chrisman
IRON MOUNTAIN - Kenneth Chrisman, 63, of Iron Mountain died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003.
Kenneth was born March 12, 1939, in New Cambria, Mo., son of the late Gale and Elizabeth (Holloway) Chrisman. He had been a resident of the area since the early 1970s. He served in the U.S. Army. Kenneth worked as a journeyman iron worker and was a member of the Marquette and Milwaukee Iron Workers Union. He had a great love of the outdoors. Kenneth enjoyed hunting, especially bearing hunting and fishing.
He is survived by a son, Brian Chrisman of San Francisco, Calif.; a daughter, Trisha (Rob) Navaroli of Clinton Township, lower Michigan, and two grandchildren, Mary and Dean.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Walter Berkholtz
IRON MOUNTAIN - Walter W. Berkholtz, 95, of W6642 Groveland Mine Road, Iron Mountain, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
He was born Nov. 29, 1907, in Hustisford, Wis., son of the late August and Martha (Schoeihert) Berkholtz. Walter married Wanda Cichanofsky on May 5, 1939, in Racine, Wis. They spent many summers in the Channing area before moving to Channing in 1973. He had farmed and worked for the Beloit Foundry for many years before retiring. Walter was a former member of the Sagola Presbyterian Church and the Moose Lodge in Harvard, Ill. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and the company of his dog, Chassie. Walter was an avid Atlanta Braves fan.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda, in 1980; son-in-law, David Loveridge, in 1993; two grandchildren, Melissa Berkholtz, in 1972, and Marsha Gaskins, in 1992; three sisters, Sadie Schmidt, Elsie Harder and Leona Greinke, and four brothers, Ed, Bob, Alvin and Franklin Berkholtz.
Walter is survived by a son, Walter (Ethel) Berkholtz of Metter, Ga.; two daughters, Judy (Art) Gaskins of Iron Mountain and Joyce Loveridge of Quinnesec; a sister, Gertie Dorn of Fond du Lac, Wis.; 10 grandchildren, Melody (John) Folyer, Cindy (Matt) Smith, Greg Wille, Carl 'J.R.' Wille, Kathy (Perry) Gould, Peggy (Steve) Oman, Mike Wille, Jim Gaskins, Becky Gaskins, and Dawn (Paul) Nygaard, and 14 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Pastor Lori Liverance will officiate. Burial will be in the Channing cemetery.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Homes of Iron Mountain to handle the funeral arrangements.

La Verne Hicks Pirlot
KINGSFORD - La Verne Hicks Pirlot, 85, of 329 Case St., Kingsford, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born Dec. 4, 1917, in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late Charles and Anna (Swanson) Walstrom. She was a lifelong resident of the area. La Verne married Howard Hicks in October of 1934 and he preceded her in death in 1968. She later married Frank Pirlot in June 1970 and he preceded her in death in 1981. La Verne enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, playing cards and bingo. She also liked to cook for her family, pick berries and she enjoyed the outdoors.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Douglas and an infant daughter, Patricia; two brothers, Albert and Elwood Walstrom; and two sisters, Ruth Hagberg and Edna Carey.
She is survived by 11 children, Rodger (Kay) Hicks of Kingsford, Marilyn (Jerry) Kohler of Maine, Marv (Muriel) Hicks of Kingsford, Bruce (Myrna) Hicks of Iron Mountain, Nancy Nault of Mississippi, Charlotte Groeneveld of Illinois, Beverly (Dave) Powell of Kingsford, Dale Hicks of Kingsford, Douglas (Dianne) Hicks of Kingsford, Ginger (Danny) Sturm of Illinois and Randy Hicks of Texas; a brother, Clarence (La Verne) Walstrom of Quinnesec; a sister, Helen (Wendell) Filliger of Las Vegas, Nev.; 39 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Kingsford Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Wilton will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain. La Verne's sons will serve as her pallbearers.
Funeral services have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Kingsford Funeral Home located in Kingsford.

Ralph Anderson
KINGSFORD - Ralph W. Anderson, 79, of Homestead, Wis., died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain, after a lengthy illness.
Ralph was born Oct. 15, 1923, in Chicago, Ill., son of the late Edwin and Hildur (Anderson) Anderson of Evanston, Ill. Ralph was a World War II veteran, serving three years from Nov. 4, 1942 to Nov. 9, 1945 in what was then the U.S. Army Air Corps. His campaigns included England, France and Belgium. He attained the rank of staff sergeant as a radio mechanic in the radar division. Ralph married the former June Peterson on Feb. 22, 1947, in Aurora, Wis. He and his wife retired from the Chicago area to Homestead in 1986 and enjoyed their many wonderful friends and the beauty of the northwoods. Ralph was a member of the Aurora Free Church, the Over 60 Club and enjoyed fishing and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife, June; two sons, Glenn (Joan) Anderson of Cary, Ill., and Gary (Candice) Anderson of Arlington Heights, Ill.; a daughter, Gayle (Ralph) Halberstadt of Canton, Texas; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Ralph was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Aurora Free Church. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Rev. Karl Utzat will officiate. Burial will be in Homestead-Aurora cemetery. A memorial will be established in his memory.
Funeral arrangements have be entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Kingsford Funeral Home.

Harvey Poquette
IRON MOUNTAIN - Harvey L. Poquette, 79, of Breitung Township, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in the comfort of his home surrounded by love. He fought a courageous battle with cancer for five years.
Harvey was a man who lived by high principles and convictions. He was a man of purpose. Always a gentleman who possessed a gentle spirit and a kind heart. Harvey was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His family was his pride and joy. His idea of an ideal day was a day spent at camp in Channing, relaxing on the porch, enjoying a meal off the grill, surrounded by the commotion of his family. He enjoyed an occasional ride through the woods on the gator.
He has a wonderful sense of humor. A 'funny face' for every occasion and unforgettable sayings we all loved. Harvey enjoyed going to the area senior centers for lunch with friends. They took special care of him there.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Donna; a son, Dean (Jodi) Poquette of Channing; a daughter, Karen (Bill) McCarty of Punta Gorda, Fla.; two brothers, Clayton (Mary) Poquette of Neenah, Wis. and Edsel (Martha) Poquette of Temple, Texas; two sisters, Gertrude (Albert) Brey of Quinnesec and Anna Polzinski of Milwaukee; five grandchildren, Todd Poquette, Bradley (Mandy) Poquette, Kristyn (Mike) Thibault, Mark Essig, and Sara (Aaron) Webb, a great-grandson, Carver Poquette; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Elmer Poquette; and five sisters, Viola Brey, Dorothy Perkett, Rita Mercier, Margorie Pollock, and Joyce Rochon.
He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. His ideals, convictions, and family values will be carried on through his children. Visitation was held today at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services were held at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Meredith Rupe officiating. Burial will be at the Quinnesec cemetery. A memorial will be established in his memory.
The family would like to thank Dr. Leonard and his staff, the Oncology Department and Hospice for the exceptional care they gave Harvey during his illness.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home with arrangements.

Ruth Kary
KINGSFORD - Ruth M. Kary, 80, of Kingsford died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003.
She was born March 30, 1922, in Chicago, where she grew up. Ruth went to business college and studied music at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, before she married the Rev. Charles C. Kary in 1944. She was a secretary at Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain until she retired a few years ago. She was also the organist at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain for many years. Music and nature were two of her passions. Ruth enjoyed teaching piano and organ. Until recently, she conducted wildflowers classes and enjoyed introducing many people to the natural beauties of the Upper Peninsula.
Mrs. Kary was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1994.
She is survived by her children, Timothy (Jean), Daniel (Michelle Mazur), Mark and Rebecca; her grandchildren, Wendy Tinh (Vu), Marcia, Christopher, Gabrielle, Christina, Nicole (Jason), Daniel, and Andrew, and her great-grandchildren, Elijah, Galen, Chendra and Nathaniel. She is also survived by brothers, Paul Myers, John Myers (Joan), and Daniel Myers, and sisters, Eunice Jones (Cecil) and Dorcas De, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her elder brother, Stephen Myers in 2000.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 5, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church with Fr. Charles Piper officiating.

Lemoyne Gardner
GOODMAN, Wis. - LeMoyne 'Moe' Gardner, 48, of Goodman, Wis., died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Feb. 22, 1954, in Coon Rapids, Minn., son of LaMoyne Gardner and Bernie (Earl) Boelter, both of Webster, Wis. area. Moe was a Webster High School graduate and went on to receive his associates degree. He married Lynn Burzynski Hansen on March 14, 1998. They lived in Goodman for the past year, coming from Webster. Moe enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. He was an avid football fan, he especially liked the Viking-Packer games.
Moe is survived by his wife, Lynn Gardner of Goodman, Wis.; a daughter, Kari Gardner of White Bear Lake, Minn.; three stepdaughters, Theresa Watzl of Coon Rapids, Minn., Laura (Cory) Factor of Elysian, Minn., and Sarah Hansen of Cleveland, Minn.; father, LaMoyne Gardner, and mother, Bernie (Earl) Boelter, both of Webster; paternal grandmother, Lucille Stechmiller; a brother, LaVernne (Ricci) Gardner of South Dakota; two sisters, LuJuanna (Randy) Magnnuson of the Webster area and Laurie Voss of Prescott, Wis., and three grandchildren, Alexandra Watzl, Grace Factor and Aarron Carroll, and a fourth on the way, Isabelle Factor. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Goodman, Wis. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Fr. Edward Nowakowski will officiate.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
