Elaine Williams

Elaine Williams of Iron River was a former Engadine resident and an active church volunteer.

Mrs. Williams died at the age of 70 Sunday, November 6, 2005 at the Iron County Community Hospital in Iron River.

She was born April 29, 1935, in Engadine, to Julius and Pauline (nee Schliske) Stelter. She was a 1954 graduate of Engadine High School, and married Alan Williams a year later, September 24, 1955.

The couple lived in Gaylord, East Lansing, and Ithaca, before settling in Iron River in June 1976. After her husband's retirement from the Michigan State Police, Elaine and Al Williams volunteered with the Laborers for Christ Mission of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. Mrs. Williams was a cook in the Laborers group. Mrs. Williams was also a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Iron River.

Survivors include her husband, Alan; a daughter and her family, Mary Jo and Brian Bueche of Grand Rapids; three sons and their families, Ronald and Cindy Williams of Palacios, Texas, James Williams of Bluffton, South Carolina, and Gerald Williams, who is stationed with the United States Air Force at RAF Lakenheth, England; a brother and his family, Julius "Jay" and Marian Stelter of Wonder Lake, Illinois; four sisters and their families, Margaret Everhart of Thomasville, North Carolina, Alice Fiegel and Ruth and Elmer Brown, all of Engadine, and Mary Jane McFarland of Mount Lake Terrace, Washington, and four grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, and Nathan Bueche, and Nicholas Williams.

Friends can call at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Engadine Friday, November 11, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday, November 12, before services, starting at 10 a.m.

Services will be Saturday, November 12, at 11 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Pastor Arthur Bode will officiate.

Interment will follow at the Bethlehem Lutheran cemetery in Engadine.

Ron Bloch

A memorial mass for Ronald A. Bloch, who passed away September 17, 2005, will be Wednesday, November 9, at noon at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in St. Ignace. Father Jim Williams will officiate.

Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace assisted the family with arrangements.

Loucille Becks

Loucille Mildred Becks of Pickford was the bookkeeper for her husband's business for many years, in addition to raising her children. She was an excellent seamstress, who made most of her three daughters' clothing while they were growing up.

Mrs. Becks was 87 when she passed away Saturday, September 10, 2005, at Cedar Cove Assisted Living Community in Cedarville, following a long illness.

She was born June 9, 1918 in Garden, to Walter and Mildred (nee Nault) Haas.

She grew up in Garden, and then moved to Newberry to live with her aunt while attending Newberry High School. Following graduation, she married William H. Becks October 25, 1937, in Newberry.

The Becks moved their family to Pickford in 1947, when Mr. Becks became the Standard Oil Agent for the area.

Mrs. Becks was a member of the Pickford United Methodist Church, and attended regularly when her health would allow. She was also a member of the Rebeka Lodge 437 in Newberry for many years.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and making crafts.

Mrs. Becks is survived by one son and his family, William F. and Eileen Becks of Pickford; three daughters and their families, Peggy and James Hill of Pickford, Kathy and Kenneth Batho of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Gaye and Keith Belonga of Pickford; 10 grandchildren and their families, William A. and Cheryl Becks, Ronald and Samantha Hill, William and Kim Reinbold, Terri and Randy Flannigan, Cindy and John Carlson, Sandy Pigg, Nicole and Joe Mayer, Krystal and Matt Harmon, Amanda and Rick Roy, and Chelsea Belonga; 13 great-grandchildren, Cody Becks, Calie Becks, Kristen Flannigan, Brandon Flannigan, Brook Carlson, Jordan Carlson, William Carlson, Haley Mayer, Cole Mayer, Kristi Hill, Amber Hill, Gavin Harmon, and Ian Harmon; four step-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by two sisters and their families, Lillian and Pete Tetreault of Curtis, and Dorothy and Joe Alcoto of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and one brother and his family, Edward and Delores Hass of Garden.

Mrs. Becks was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Becks November 16, 1986, after 49 years of marriage, one brother, William Haas, and two sisters, Margaret Hubbard and Ethel Tittenger.

Visitation was Monday, September 12, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

Services were Tuesday, September 13, at Pickford United Methodist Church. The Reverend Paul Gruenberg officiated.

Burial will be next to her husband in Fairview cemetery in Pickford Township.

The family requests that any remembrance donations be made to the Pickford United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 128, Pickford Michigan 49774.

Lauretta Atkins

Lauretta Ann Atkins of Barbeau was a 24-year remedial reading teacher at Pickford Elementary School, from which she retired in 1995.

Mrs. Atkins was 65 when she died Wednesday, September 7, 2005, as the result of an accident near her home.

She was born January 27, 1940, in Sault Ste. Marie, to Leonard and Margaret (nee Hill) Rutledge.

Mrs. Atkins grew up in Pickford, and was graduated from Pickford Public Schools in 1957. She attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette for three years.

She married Glen Atkins at the Pickford Presbyterian Church in Pickford April 22, 1961.

Mrs. Atkins enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, quilting, flower gardening, and listening to classical music. Friends and family members recalled that she was a great cook.

She is survived by her husband, Glen; three sons and their families, William J. Atkins of Barbeau, Kenneth G. and Tina Atkins of Midland, and Richard A. Atkins of Sault Ste. Marie; one daughter and her family, Jean A. and Mike McMillan of Battle Creek; three grandchildren, Jessica McMillan, Mark Atkins, and Mitch Atkins; four sisters and their families, Arla Jean Wilson, Mary Lynn and Vern Huyck, Glenda and Duane Brown, and Marjorie and Stanley Schmitigal, all of Pickford; three brothers and their families, James and Belva Rutledge of Pickford, Jack and Betty Rutledge of Cedarville, and Bill and Susie Rutledge of Hessel, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother-in-law, Reginald Wilson.

Visitation was Friday, September 9, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

Services were Saturday, September 10, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.

Memorial donations can be made to Special Olympics of Michigan, Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, Michigan 48859.

Shirley Stenson

Shirley Stenson, 79, of St. Ignace, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie and Eagle Harbor, died Sunday, September 11, 2005, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care.

Clarence Mark

Clarence W. “Tubby” Mark of Newberry was a veteran of World War II and was active as a volunteer in the Newberry community. Mr. Mark passed away Friday morning, September 2, 2005, at Marquette General Hospital at the age of 82.

Mr. Mark was born August 2, 1923, in Newberry to Louis and Mary (nee Fyvie) Mark. He grew up in Lakefield and was a graduate of McMillan High School.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army until his honorable discharge on January 29, 1946. Following his discharge, Mr. Mark returned to Newberry and was employed at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health center for more than 37 years until his retirement as Nursing Service Supervisor in 1978. During this time he was also employed as a school bus driver and custodian at the former Pentland Township School.

Mr. Mark was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served as a chairman of the building committee, charter member of the Newberry State Hospital Credit Union (now Tahquamenon Area Credit Union), charter member of the Michigan State Employees Association, member of the State Employee Retirement Association, member of the B.P.O.E. #1705, and the American Legion Post #74. Mr. Mark’s hobbies and interests included woodworking, gardening, traveling, baseball, and softball.

Mr. Marks is survived by his children and their families, Clarence “Scotty” and Sue of Kalamazoo, Randy and Jody, and Dennis and Irene, all of Newberry, and Kay Ramsey of Chesterfield; 12 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth Mark, of Newberry.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ada, on November 14, 2001, and by 10 siblings, Darwood, Verna, Chester, Walter, Leonard, James “Doug,” Gerald “Toots,” Julia Nantell, Edith “Sis” Meisner, and Agnes Panula.

Memorial services were Saturday, September 10, at noon at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Newberry with Pastor Daniel Clemons officiating.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry assisted the family.

Patricia Louis Land passed away unexpectedly September 10, 2005, at St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren.

Jeannette Anderson

Jeannette L. Anderson, 98, a lifelong resident of Drummond Island died at her home Sunday, May 15, 2005, with her family around her.

She was born May 10, 1907, in Sault Ste. Marie.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of Drummond Island Homemakers and served on the Drummond Island School Board. Each year from 1972 to 2004, she cooked a pancake breakfast for Island hunters. Mrs. Anderson loved to golf and she took care of the flowers at the golf course. She also baked bread and cinnamon rolls every week and enjoyed crocheting.

She is survived by one son, Cecil E. Anderson of Drummond Island; five daughters and their families, Ivalene Woehl of Holiday, Florida, Dorothy Bertram of Brimley, Helen and Bill Connally of Grand Rapids, Betty and Norman Bailey, and Verna and Robbins Bailey, all of Drummond Island; one daughter-in-law, Etta Anderson of Drummond Island; 27 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Anderson, in 1981 after 57 years of marriage; one son, Vern C. Anderson; two grandsons, Ned and Mark; three great-grandchildren, Angel Etta, Jamie, and Darrel; two sons-in-law, Bill Woehl and Allan Bertram; and one daughter-in-law, Barbara Anderson.

Services were Tuesday, May 17, at 11:30 a.m. at the Drummond Island Lutheran Church with Deacon Charles Krahnke officiating. Friends called at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Anderson’s name be made to the Hospice of Chippewa County, the Drummond Island Lutheran Church, or the Drummond Island Homemaker Scholarship Fund.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home of Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.

James Portis

James Cecil Portice was a lifelong Pickford resident who owned and operated logging trucks. Both of his sons also worked with him as logging truck drivers. He drove a gravel truck for many local road construction projects. During his working years, he also enjoyed farming.

Mr. Portice died at the age of 76 Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

He was born July 31, 1928, in Sault Ste. Marie, to James and Mary Ethel (nee Walker) Portice.

Mr. Portice is survived by his wife Arlene, whom he married November 28, 1953 in Fibre; a daughter and her family, Mary Jean and Thomas Michalski of Pickford; two sons and their families, James J. and Denice Portice and Calvin C. and Sharon Portice, all of Pickford; 10 grandchildren and their families, Travis and Sandy Michalski, Ginger and Jason Wallace, Brock Michalski, Ramsey Michalski, Marlee Michalski, Justin Portice, Alicia Portice, Victoria Portice, Kaylynn Portice, and McKinley Portice; five great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Shaunna, Mady, and Quincey Michalski, and Gavin Wallace; one sister and her family, Robert and Calvin Hall of Pickford, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Margaret Bolyen.

Visitation was Saturday, May 14, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford.

Services were Saturday, May 14, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home. The Reverend Ron Bown officiated.

Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in Pickford.

Memorial donations can be made to the Pickford Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 266, Pickford Michigan 49774.

Frank Wayman

Frank Wayman, 52, owner of the Buckhorn Inn in Trout Lake, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, of a heart attack.

Sylvia Johnson

Sylvia Johnson, 94, of St. Ignace, died Thursday morning, May 12, 2005, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care.

Helen Piotrowski

Memorial Mass for Helen Piotrowski of Brevort Lake will be celebrated Saturday, May 21, at 4 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church.

Mrs. Piotrowski, 87, died March 26, 2005, at Mackinac Straits Long Term Care facility.

She lived at Brevort Lake for 23 years.

Burial will be at Immaculate Conception cemetery in June, beside her husband, Carl Piotrowski.

Dodson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Phyllis Beacom

A graveside service for Phyllis J. Beacom of Pickford, who died March 2, 2005, will be Saturday, May 21, at 11:30 a.m. at Cottle cemetery in Pickford.

Mrs. Beacom’s grandson, Jeremy Cook, will officiate.

Mrs. Beacom was 77 when she died.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
