Dorothy Miller
IRON MOUNTAIN - Dorothy K. Miller, 71, of Iron Mountain died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at her home.
She is survived by a son, Richard 'Dick' Miller, and a grandson, Keith Miller.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is in charge of the arrangements.

Sharon Awrey
IRON MOUNTAIN - Sharon L. Awrey, 69, of 1555 E. Margaret St., Iron Mountain, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003 at her home.
Sharon was born Nov. 6, 1933 in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Michael and Emma (Miresse) Koller. She was a 1951 graduate of Iron Mountain High School and was a resident of the area for most of her life. She married Delos Awrey on June 30, 1951 at St. Mary and St. Joseph Church in Iron Mountain. She and her husband owned and operated Awrey's Music Land for 23 years. After they sold the music store, she pursued her writing career. Sharon wrote and published articles in numerous magazines. She also wrote for the Kids Korner in The Daily News. She created two educational cartoons, 'Pling' and 'Wojo and Penelope, ' finishing with 'Time Out For Kids ages 5-105, ' which was published in numerous newspapers across the country. In addition to her writing, she was a volunteer board member for Kids Can, a program designed to prevent child abuse throughout our community. Sharon was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Church in Iron Mountain.
She is survived by her husband, Delos; her children, Cheryl (Patrick) LaPine of Harbor Beach, lower Michigan, Randy (Connie) Awrey of Freeland, lower Michigan, Kim (James) Cazzola of Iron Mountain and Terry (Lisa) Awrey of Crystal Lake, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, Kristen, Sean, Megan LaPine, Jennifer, Robert, Anthony and Nicholas Awrey, Marisa, Emily, Travis and Zachary Awrey.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at noon Monday at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
A memorial will be established in her memory to the Heath Department Home Health and Hospice.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain to handle the funeral arrangements.

John Nelson Jr.
IRON MOUNTAIN - John C. 'Jack' Nelson Jr., 88, of 805 Wells St., Iron Mountain, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at ManorCare Health Care Center in Kingsford.
Jack was born March 11, 1914, in Iron Mountain, son of the late John C. and Selma (Haglund) Nelson. He graduated from Iron Mountain High School and was a resident of the area his entire life. He married Evelyn Hassell, daughter of the former Iron Mountain Police Chief Gustav 'Gus' and Ella (Hallman) Hassell, on Oct. 6, 1937. Jack and Ev celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past October. Jack was a very active member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. He served in a number of capacities at the church, as well as being a member of the choir for many years. He worked for Ford Motor Co. and later joined Lake Shore Inc. as production control manager of their plants in Iron Mountain and Marquette. He retired in 1975 to enjoy gardening and his hunting camp located in the Granite Bluff area.
Jack is survived by his wife, Evelyn; two sons, J. Calvin (Carol) Nelson of Huntington, W.V., and Don W. (Kay) Nelson of Brighton, Mich.; a daughter, Sally E. Nelson of Iron Mountain; three grandchildren, Sherry Noe, Darren Nelson and Kristin Lawrence, and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Aaron Noe.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Giachino.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain to handle the funeral arrangements.

Karen Berquist
IRON MOUNTAIN - Karen V. Berquist, 48, of W7271 Sportsmens Club Road, Iron Mountain, died Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospital.
She was born December 15, 1954 in Iron Mountain, daughter of Bruce and Julie (Simons) Stuart. Karen graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1973, and was a resident of the area her entire life. She married John Berquist on October 20, 1973 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain. Karen worked as chief deputy treasurer at the Dickinson County Courthouse for several years. She was a very active and dedicated member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Karen enjoyed crafts, reading, walking and was an avid gardener.
She is survived by her husband John; two daughters, Jessica (Matt) Pancheri and Sarah Berquist; her parents, Bruce and Julie Stuart; three sisters, Chris (Doug) Edlund, Candy (Vince) Lauk and Norma (Paul) Raboin; two grandchildren, Andrew and Gabrielle; mother-in-law, Cecelia Berquist; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Bruce and an infant sister, Brenda.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Friday, February 7, 2003 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain. A memorial service will be held at 7:00pm on Friday at the church. Fr. Charles Piper will officiate. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Karen's memory.

Laverne Underwood
FLORENCE, Wis. - Laverne E. Underwood, 78, of Emmet County, Mich., since 1962, and Florence County Wis. for the past three months, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Laverne was born Sept. 12, 1924, in Alma, Mich., son of the late Glen and Cloa Alma (Hall) Underwood. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and served as an airplane mechanic supporting the Flying Tigers in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operation. He married the former Mable Gibbs on July 2, 1943, and had celebrated 59 years together. Laverne operated his own excavating business for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Laverne enjoyed motorcycling and belonged to the motorcycle club in Petosky, Mich. He was also an avid woodworker and especially enjoyed fishing and boating on the Crooked River.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mable on Nov. 3, 2002, and by a brother, Frank Underwood.
Laverne is survived by his son, Les (Jana) Underwood of Florence; a sister, Cynthia Towns of Auburn, Ind., and three grandchildren, Adam, Haley and Zak Underwood.
Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory to the Alanson Beautification Center: Hillside Gardens.

George Peterson
IRON MOUNTAIN - George Norman Peterson, 76, of Santa Barbara, Calif., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.
He was born May 27, 1926, in Iron Mountain.
George or 'Norm' as he was frequently called by family and close friends, worked for Delco Electronics, General Motors for 30 years, both in Oak Creek, Wis., and Santa Barbara, Calif., being transferred to Santa Barbara in 1972. He retired from his position as pricing and analysis supervisor in 1986, and had been involved in monthly Delco retirement activities for the past 16 years.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force for two years before marrying his wife, Ethel in 1947.
George was a member of the First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain, Milwaukee Covenant Church and the Goleta Community Covenant Church. He was currently involved in a weekly Bible study cell group.
He enjoyed his daily walks, family visits and reading. He loved to drive and made many trips to Wisconsin to visit his family. He especially enjoyed drives along the Coast and frequent trips to Solvang.
George was a man of integrity. He was extremely organized and ethical. He was a gentle, wise and humble man and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by a young son, Gary Alan, in 1952.
George is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ethel; his five children, Bruce and Dale, both of Milwaukee, Paul of Santa Maria, Calif., Mary Isbell of Peoria, Ill., and Ann Montgomery of Modesto, Calif.; his sisters, Arline Keating of Betavia, Ill., and Margaret Galbraith of Niagara, Wis.; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will follow at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. Pastor Larry Neargarth will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Blair Davidson
IRON MOUNTAIN - Blair J. Davidson, 81, 1002 Woodward Ave., Iron Mountain, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born December 25, 1921, in Waupaca, WI, son of the late James and Fern (Shambeau) Davidson. Blair has been a resident of the area for most of his life and was a graduate of Kingsford High School, class of 1938. He married Beverly Cambray on October 16, 1943 in Ann Arbor, MI and recently celebrated their 59 wedding anniversary. Blair graduated from Ferris State University with a B.S. in accounting. He worked for Champion Inc. as an accountant and corporate officer for more than 50 years. Blair was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served on many of the churches boards and committees. He was an active, longtime member of the Iron Mountain- Kingsford Kiwanis Club where he was a recipient of the George Hixson Award. He volunteered at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital for several years in Various Departments. He loved to walk, enjoyed the outdoors and camping. He loved his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Beverly; three sons, Gary (Diane) Davidson of Kingsford, James Davidson of Oswego, IL, and Stephen (Jan) Davidson of Iron Mountain; a brother, Clayton (Alice) Davidson of Flat Rock, North Carolina; two sisters, Delores Luba of Kingsford, and Joyce (Henry) London of Iron Mountain; eight grandchildren, Melissa (Scott) VanWolvelaere, Christine (Michael) Bruns, James Davidson Jr., Tanya (Gary) Koike, and Tiffany, Heather, Amber, and Chad Davidson; and five great grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2:00 until 3:00pm Sunday, February 2, 2003 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain. A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm, Sunday at the church. Rev. Dr. Meredith Rupe and Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Burial will be at Dickinson Co. Memorial Gardens in Iron Mountain.
In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established to the Trinity United Methodist Kitchen Fund in his memory.

Judith Kermeen
FLORENCE, Wis. - Judith Ann Kermeen, 63, of Florence, Wis., died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born Jan. 18, 1940, in Milwaukee, daughter of the late William Kermeen and Elsie Kelly.
Judith worked for Florence Villa Nursing Home as a nurses aide. She collected frogs and owls. She was the 'ultimate mother' raising six children.
Judith is survived by three sons, Charles (Michelle) Ranta Jr. of Iron Mountain, William Ranta of Lafayette, Colo., and Jesse (Elsie) Ranta of Pleasant Praire, Wis.; three daughters, Charlene Jamison of Galveston, Texas, Kelly Wilbanks of Iron Mountain and Jennifer Pace of Iron Mountain; her boyfriend, Jack Vassar of Florence, Wis.; two brothers, Orville (Janette) Snodie Jr. of Crystal Falls and Jim (Violet) Snodie of Zion, Ill.; four sisters, Florence Ponchaud of Crystal Falls, Janet (Don) Lance of Felch, Jackie Vondell of Niagara, Wis., and Ellen Wiebe of Mesquite, N.M.; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A gathering will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at Christ United Methodist Church in Crystal Falls. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Rev. Elbert Dulworth will officiate.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.

Beryl Carlsen
IRON MOUNTAIN - Beryl Carlsen, 86, of Iron Mountain passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Beryl was born July 11, 1916, in Trevellas, Cornwall, England, daughter of the late James and Bessie (Osborne) White. She immigrated to the United States with her family in 1920. They settled in Norway, where Beryl attended the local schools
After her high school graduation, she attended Columbus Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated from Loyola University in 1938. She took post-graduate work at Cook County Hospital, where she was employed for a time before accepting a position as a nurse at Penn Hospital in Norway. On Feb. 14, 1941, Beryl was united in marriage to Edward Charles Carlsen at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Norway. They would have celebrated 62 very special loving years together this Valentines Day. Beryl and her husband were members of Trinity United Methodist Church since its inception. She was active in many facets of Christian service within her congregation, including 18 years as church organist. She was also a member of the Lydia Circle of her church.
She is survived by her husband, Edward; her son, Robert (Judy) Carlsen of Norway; her son, Mark (JoAnne) Carlsen of Westminster, Colo.; her daughter, Linda (Rick) Stanchina of Iron Mountain; her grandchildren, Andrea (Nick) Blomberg, David (Connie) Carlsen, Scott (Nicole) Stanchina, Brian Stanchina and Melissa (Scott) Ross; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys White of Quinnesec; her brothers, Clarence White of Marquette and Robert (Grayce) White of Iron Mountain, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Beryl was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis; sisters-in-law, Stella and Sophie White, and a daughter-in-law, Suzanne Ferris Carlsen.
Friends may visit from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain. Rev. Dr. Meredith Rupe will officiate. Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
Beryl's family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the staffs of Hyland Nursing Home and Dickinson Memorial Hospital for their loving care during her last illness and their thanks to all who visited Beryl and offered words of comfort.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Bernice L. Dixon
FELCH - Bernice L. Dixon, 75, of Felch died Friday, Aug 8, 2003, at Dickinson County Hospital.
She was born Feb. 13, 1928, in Felch, daughter of the late Hjalmar and Ellen (Marander) Jacobson. She was a lifelong resident of Felch. She married Daniel R. Dixon in Felch on March 8, 1947. Bernice was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Metropolitan, and a member of the American Legion Post 0168 of Channing. She loved baseball and loved watching her grandchildren when they played both Little League and Fun League. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. She loved to sew and quilt.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Steele, Hanna Lundin, and Ellen Salbeck, and two brothers, Elroy and Allen Jacobson.
Bernice is survived by her husband, Dan, four sons, Darwin (Lola) Dixon of Felch, Greg (Chris) Dixon of Ralph, Thomas Dixon of Felch, and Todd Dixon of Clearwater, Fla; a brother, Dean (Evone) Jacobson of Iron Mountain, five grandchildren, Trevor and Dustin Dixon, Deana (Mike) Thoune, Derrick and Ariel Dixon, three great-grandchildren, Lacey and Jenna Thoune, and Kijana Dixon.
Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. John Voelker will officiate. Burial will be in Felch cemetery.
The family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
