Donald Potvin

Donald C. Potvin, 74, of Curtis, was a Korean War veteran who owned and operated Don’s Barber Shop in Marquette for 31 years. He died Sunday morning, May 8, 2005, at his home on South Manistique Lake.

Mr. Potvin was born February 6, 1931, in Iron Mountain, to Douglas and Alda Potvin.

He was a 1949 graduate of Graveraet High School in Marquette. Following graduation, he entered the United States Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge April 13, 1953.

Mr. Potvin returned to Marquette, where he entered the masonry trade and later owned and operated Don’s Barber Shop in Marquette for 31 years until his retirement in 1993. He has been a resident of Curtis for the past eight years and had spent the past four winters in Florida. He was a member of St. Timothy’s Catholic Church of Curtis and was a life member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge 405 and American Legion Post 44, both of Marquette. He enjoyed fishing, playing cribbage, and bowling.

Survivors include his wife, the former Victoria Machowski of Curtis, whom he married in August 1981 in Marquette; a daughter and her family, Patricia and Steven Bozek of Scottsdale, Arizona; a son and his family, Robert and Jeanne Potvin of Richfield, Wisconsin; a stepdaughter and her family, Suzanne Mattson and Chad Broadus of Ridgefield, Washington; two grandchildren, Jacob and Benjamin Potvin; two step-grandchildren, Zoe and Xander Mattson-Broadus, and two siblings, Fred and Rita Potvin of Marquette and Karen and Jack Dooley of Curtis.

A memorial mass will be Saturday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church with Father Tim Hruska officiating. Inurnment will follow at Woodlawn cemetery.

Memorials can be made to Luce County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 375, Newberry, MI 49868, or North Woods Home Health and Hospice, 500 West McMillan, Newberry.

Michael Hegarty

The Honorable Michael K. Hegarty of Brighton and Mackinac Island, a district court judge and former member of the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at the age of 71.

Mr. Hegarty served on the park commission from 1969 to 1971 and was a judge of 53rd District Court in Livingston County.

He was born to John and Myrtle (nee McBride) Hegarty June 16, 1933 and was graduated from the University of Notre Dame and the Notre Dame Law School. He served as Judge Advocate General with the U.S. Air Force and was a trial lawyer in private practice in Detroit and Brighton.

He was appointed 53rd District Court Judge in 1992 and resigned in April because of declining health. According to the Ann Arbor News , he had been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.

He married Jane Elizabeth Porritt April 4, 1964 and she survives, along with their children and their families, Michael and Sharon Hegarty of Farmington Hills, Charles and Kathleen Hegarty of Canton, and Mary Hegarty of Brighton; four grandchildren, Abigail and Brooke of Farmington Hills and Patrick and Brigid of Canton, and a brother and his family, John and Beverly Hegarty Jr. of Amelia Island, Florida.

Visitation was Sunday, May 15, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brighton with services Monday at 10 a.m. at the church.

Memorials can be made to the Mackinac Island Medical Center or to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Herrmann Funeral Home in Brighton handled arrangements.

Steven Ewer

A graveside service for Steven James Ewer, 15, of Pickford, will be at Cottle cemetery in Pickford Tuesday, May 24, at 10 a.m. The Reverend Paul Gruenberg will officiate.

Mr. Ewer died December 19, 2004.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Betty Bryant

Betty Jane Bryant died October 18, 2005, at Troy Beaumont Hospital under hospice care.

She was born to Lilly (nee Rosing) and Walfred Sherlund May 24, 1923. She was graduated from Cedarville High School in 1941 and moved to Detroit to work at the S.S. Kresge Company.

She married Raymond S. Bryant July 24, 1943. They were married for 58 years before he predeceased her in 2002.

Mrs. Bryant worked at the Michigan State Fair, for Michigan State Police, and for Rudy Sherlund, Inc. doing office work and bookkeeping. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, and canning. She was an active member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Detroit and of Bethel Lutheran Church in Cedarville. At Bethel, she was treasurer of the church women’s group and served on the Altar Guild. Mrs. Bryant enjoyed participating in the Les Cheneaux Boat Show for a number of years and also making pasties with her friends at Bethel.

Mr. and Mrs. Bryant traveled throughout the United States during their retirement years. They especially enjoyed visiting their grandchildren at college and were proud and happy to attend their graduations and weddings, friends said.

Mrs. Bryant always considered Swede Road in Cedarville her home.

Mrs. Bryant is survived by her daughter, Kristine Gaunt of Troy, three grandchildren, and six great grandchildren and their families, William and Heather Gaunt, Jack and Alexandra of Chesterfield Township, Michael and Karen Gaunt and Marshall and Nelson, all of Metamora, Jennifer and Clancy Poxson and Ike and Murphy of Sterling Heights. She is also survived by her sister, Charline McGurk, and nieces and their families, Karen and Chuck Isom and Pat and David Isom, and a nephew and his family, Bill and Bev McGurk. Several cousins from the Rosing, Sherlund, and Osterlund families also survive.

A memorial service was held Saturday, October 22, at 2 p.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Cedarville. Memorials may be sent to Beaumont Hospice of Troy, or Bethel Lutheran Church of Cedarville. Burial will be in Cedar cemetery.

Ross Funeral Home of Pickford assisted the family with arrangements.

Frank Hastings

Frank F. Hastings, 88, a longtime businessman in Engadine, was instrumental in the formation of the Garfield Township Fire Department and Ambulance Service, and at age 80, he became one of the oldest first-time recipients of a private pilot’s license in Michigan, being able to fly general aviation aircraft.

Mr. Hastings died Tuesday, October 18, 2005, at the Luce County Annex in Newberry.

He was born in Engadine December 21, 1916, to Larry and Ruth (nee Freeman) Hastings. He attended Engadine High School but was graduated from a high school in Florida. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II.

He married Jane Trakel December 16, 1939.

Following his military service, Mr. Hastings owned and operated the Freeman Lumber Company in Engadine until his retirement in the mid-1980s.

He was a member of Gideon’s International, an active member of the Garfield Township Fire and Ambulance Service, and attended Rexton Mennonite Church. Mr. Hastings was a lifetime member of the Engadine VFW Post and was a licensed ham radio operator.

Mr. Hastings is survived by his wife, two sons and their families, Tom and Nancy of Jacksonville, Florida, and Richard and Kathy of Newberry, two daughters and their families, Judy and Don Bjorkland of Newberry and Laura Hastings of East Jordan, 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Audrey LaMirande.

Services were Thursday, October 20, at Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Tim Miller of Rexton Mennonite Church officiating. Friends called at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Ralph Olmstead

Ralph Charles Olmstead of St. Ignace came from a family of commercial fishermen, and he fished with his father for many years. He was partner and manager of McDonald's Bar in DeTour for 12 years, and he also owned and operated Olmstead's Standard Station on West US-2 until his retirement.

Following retirement, he drove a small train, the Silver Lake Express, for Emil Syverson.

Mr. Olmstead died at the age of 89 Monday, October 24, 2005 at home.

He was born March 7, 1916, in DeTour, to Aaron and Margaret (nee Cadarette) Olmstead.

He married Stella Firack December 13, 1945, and they made their home in DeTour and St. Ignace.

His favorite pastimes were fishing, playing cribbage, hunting, and working in his vegetable garden.

Mr. Olmstead was fondly known as "Quacky" by his friends in DeTour. He played in the DeTour Baseball League until he was in his early 40s.

During World War II, Mr. Olmstead served in the United States Army in France and Germany.

He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge 999, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Olmstead is survived by his wife, Stella; a son and his family, Gary and Diann Olmstead of Edgewood, Kentucky; a daughter and her family, Cheryl and Bruce St. Louis of St. Ignace; four grandchildren, Tina Olmstead of Shelby Township, Tony Olmstead of Arizona, Kevin St. Louis of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Casey St. Louis of St. Louis, Missouri; one great-grandchild, Alexis Olmstead of Ohio, and a sister, Lola McKiddie of Angola, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Loyal and Hartwell, and a sister, Thelma Goudreau.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DeTour.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Jerome Nowacki will be the celebrant.

Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in DeTour.

Memorial donations may be left to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, P.O. Box 8, DeTour Village Michigan 49725.

Phyllis Clement

Phyllis Ann Clement, 85, of Sun Lakes, Arizona, died at her home October 15, 2005. She became ill with cancer in 2003, four months after the death of her husband, Carryl Benton “Clem” Clement.

She was born in St. Ignace June 4, 1920.

She was one of the first women to enlist in the Navy as a WAVE during World War II. She taught gunnery school for the Navy, where she met her husband, a student in one of her classes. They were married July 26, 1943, in Seattle, Washington.

The couple, with their son, C.B. Clement Jr., moved all over the United States during Mr. Clement’s military career. Upon retirement, they moved to Arizona, making Sun Lakes their home for the past 20 years.

Mrs. Clement enjoyed playing bridge, swimming, music, and loved the challenge of a good crossword puzzle. Her favorite times were the all-day bridge games with her friends and family reunions at her sister’s cabin on Brevoort Lake in the Upper Peninsula, friends said.

She is survived by her son, C.B. Clement Jr., of Sun Lakes, and four sisters, Patricia Barrett of Portland, Oregon, Pudge Pechta of St. Ignace, Jane Villberg of Ishpeming, and Ruth Calhoun of Hickory Corners, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Respecting Mrs. Clement’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services. Burial of ashes will be in St. Ignace at the family resting place of her mother, father, and husband, who preceded her in death.

Edith Jewell

Edith Jewell, 100, died October 20, 2005, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care Facility in St. Ignace.

She was born June 2, 1905, in Port Huron to Charlotte and Frederick Carroll. She grew up in Port Huron and later moved to Highland Park, where she was graduated from high school.

She met her husband, Don Jewell, at the church they both attended in Port Huron. They were married May 22, 1925, and lived in Port Huron until moving to Mackinaw City in 1952. The Jewells resided on Lakeside Drive on Wawatam Beach.

Mrs. Jewell was a valued employee of Teysens Restaurant and Gift Shop in Mackinaw City for 19 years, and later managed the Copper Lantern Gift Shop owned by Peg Smith.

Following Mr. Jewell’s death in June 1992, Mrs. Jewell sold her home on the beach and moved to a cottage in the village.

Mrs. Jewell is survived by her niece, June Carroll Kazuk of Fort Myers, Florida, a nephew, Timothy Dolan of Port Huron, a cousin, the Reverend Douglas Teeple of Houston, Texas, and many friends.

No visitation is planned. There will be a brief graveside committal service Wednesday, October 26, at 11 a.m. at Lakeview cemetery in Mackinaw City.

Nordman Funeral Home of Cheboygan assisted the family with arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Straits or Vital Care, both of Cheboygan.

Tom Huggins

Tom Huggins, 73, was a teacher of calculus, physics, and senior mathematics for many years in St. Ignace schools, and a teacher of junior high school at the former Evergreen Shores school in St. Ignace.

Mr. Huggins, a resident of Helmer in the Upper Peninsula and Leesburg, Florida, died Tuesday, October 18, 2005, at Marquette General Hospital.

He was born June 29, 1932, in Pontiac.

Mr. Huggins was a junior high and high school teacher in St. Ignace from 1963 until his retirement in 1989.

Following retirement, he and his wife, Elaine Huggins, enjoyed spending winters in Florida and summers in the Upper Peninsula. He loved hunting and fishing. Mr. Huggins was a member of Knights of Columbus in St. Ignace and the American Legion in Leesburg.

Mr. Huggins is survived by his wife, two daughters and their families, Mary and Norman Tamlyn of Petoskey and Patty and Floyd Paquin Jr. of St. Ignace, a granddaughter and her family, Cindy and Norman Gray of Mount Pleasant, and a grandson, Thomas Huggins-Paquin of St. Ignace. He is survived by a sister, Mary Andreini, of Topeka, Kansas, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Memorials may be directed to St. Therese Catholic Church Boiler Fund in care of Marilyn Thomas, 1390 County Road 477, McMillan Michigan 49853.
