Bror Erickson
HARDWOOD - Bror C. 'Buddy' Erickson, 74, of Hardwood, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born Oct. 5, 1928, in Hardwood, son of the late John and Minnie (Carlson) Erickson. He has been a lifelong resident of the area. He enjoyed cutting firewood and hunting. Bror loved his nieces, nephews, and all children.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray, Lester, Bertil, Lawrence, and Richard Erickson and his sisters, Thelma Mcguire, Evelyn Hoglund, Elthea Metzger, and Ethel Erickson.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews including two special nieces, Tammy Wagner and Kristal Bauer.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Lloyd Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Foster City cemetery.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Roy Sovey
IRON MOUNTAIN - Roy C. Sovey, 93, of 601 Wells St., Iron Mountain, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
Roy was born March 28, 1910, in Gladstone, son of the late Joseph and Christine (Neilson) Sovey. He married the former Eleanor Quadrani on May 3, 1941, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Roy was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Coast Guard for three years during the European and Pacific Theatre of Operations. He worked 30 years before retiring from Kimberly-Clark (Niagara of Wisconsin). Following his retirement, Roy worked for two years as the custodian for the Dickinson Area Catholic School in Iron Mountain. Roy was a member of the St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a former member of the Iron Mountain Elks Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his daughter, Donna Sovey of Kingsford; two grandchildren, Trisha (Robert) Navaroli of Clinton Township, lower Michigan and Brian Chrisman of San Francisco, Calif.; two great-grandchildren Dean and Mary Navaroli; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Deacon Donald Christy will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Michael Wickman
IRON MOUNTAIN - Michael D. Wickman, 34, of Iron Mountain, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003 at Dickinson County Hospital.
He was born Nov. 1, 1968 in Detroit, lower Michigan, son of Jeanette (Lennon) and David Wickman. Michael graduated from Norway High School in 1987. He and his brother Eric owned and operated a portable sawmill. He also worked at Cable Constructors and Econo Foods for many years. Michael was a member of St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Vulcan. He loved to travel, bike and hike, and enjoyed the outdoors. He especially loved his mom's home cooked meals. His friends and family will remember his unique sense of humor. Michael cared for people and was always helping others. He was a caring and tender hearted soul. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his parents; Jeanette and David Wickman, his brother and best friend, Eric Wickman of Oshkosh, Wis; three sisters, Maureen (Tony) Grell of Wild Rose, Wis, Mary Ann (Steven) Andrews of Breitung Township, and Kathleen Jo Wickman of Green Bay, Wis. He is also survived by five nieces and nephews; Jordyn Grell, Taylor, Marcus, Jackson, and Emma Andrews, and his friend and family dog, 'Lady'. Michael is further survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Vulcan. Funeral services will be at noon at the church. Fr. Ben Paris will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be at the Quinnesec cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tim Wickman, Dan Wickman, Eric Wickman, David Fredrickson, Rick Bigari, and Dean Gazza.

David Oliver
KINGSFORD - David B. Oliver, 47, of 505 Withworth Ave., died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital.
David was born Oct. 1, 1956, and has been a resident of the area his entire life. He was a 1974 graduate of Kingsford High School.
For the past four years, he had worked as the quality control supervisor for Cable Constructors Inc. David was a former member of the Pilots Association. He enjoyed flying, skiing, photography and biking.
He is survived by his mother, Barbara Oliver of Kingsford; three brothers, Robert Oliver of Green Bay, Wis., Douglas (Joan) Oliver of Quinnesec and Gary (Laurie) Oliver of Aurora, Wis.; a sister, Leila (Jim) Canavera of Quinnesec; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and several special friends.
David was preceded in death by his father, Dale Oliver; and his grandparents, Eldon and Emily Nelson, Clarence and Leila Gregerson and Sam Oliver.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.

Kenneth Bailey
AURORA, Wis. - Kenneth H. Bailey, 80, of Aurora, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born on March 10, 1923, in Ladysmith, Wis., the son of the late Fred and Ida (Nelson) Bailey. Ken was a resident of this area for most of his life.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and he had worked for Boeing Aircraft for 15 years. He also worked for Schultz Equipment for 16 years before retiring.
Ken married Dorothy (Jacobson) Hord on June 28, 1969, at First Methodist Church in Iron Mountain.
He enjoyed salmon fishing, gardening, and the coffee crew at B's Cafe.
Ken is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Carol Ann (Maynard) Engeland; and one granddaughter, Alica Engeland, all of Renton, Wash.; one brother, Neil (Audrey) Bailey of Enumclew, Wash.; one sister, Nathalie Miller of Crivitz, Wis.; and one sister-in-law, Katherine Bailey of Waterloo, Iowa; two stepchildren, Corinne (John) Dibiasi of Bark River and Doug (Bonnie) Hord of Aurora; three step-grandchildren, Jason and Jesse Hord of Milwaukee and Andria (Cris) Nichols of Bamberg, Germany; and two step great-grandchildren, Kalvin and Kelina Nichols.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Lillian; two brothers, Arthur 'Bud' Bailey and Allen Bailey; and one step-grandson, Darren Dibiasi.
Private family services will be held at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Rev. David Snyder of the First Methodist Church will officiate.

Frederick Schmitt
CRYSTAL FALLS - Frederick H. Schmitt, 89, of 1517 Camp 5 Road, Crystal Falls, formerly of Racine, Wis., woke to eternal life on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004.
He was born on June 24, 1914, in Menominee, the son of the late Christian and Minnie (Barthels) Schmitt. Fred was a 1935 graduate of Iron Mountain High School.
Fred married Randi Hansen on March 25, 1937, in Iron Mountain. She preceded him in death on Jan. 13, 2003.
Upon graduating, Fred worked at Ford Motor Co. in Kingsford until 1949. He then moved to Racine, Wis., where he had lived until one year ago. He had worked for the Motor Transport Co. of Racine as a truck driver. Fred drove truck No. 300 for 24 years until retiring in 1974.
He was a member of Calvary Memorial Church in Racine. Fred was an avid sportsman, fisherman and a professional 'putterer.' He enjoyed listening to hymns and reading his Bible. He also loved gardening, chocolate, and most of all, his family.
Fred is survived by four children, Yvonne (Ed) Willis of Racine, Fred (Karen) Schmitt of Racine, Larry (Virginia) Schmitt of Miami, Fla. and Darlene (Bob) Taylor of Crystal Falls; seven grandchildren, Jeanne Willis of Racine, Larry (Sherri) Schmitt of Boynton Beach, Fla., Dan (Karen) Schmitt of Fayetteville, Ga., Mike (Julie) Willis of Racine, Steve (Karen) Schmitt of Racine, Chris Willis of Racine and Liz (Jerry) McCann of Kenya, Africa; 11 great-grandchildren, Kevin, Amber, Josh, Brieanna, and Nathan Willis and Rebecca, Katie, Laura, Stephanie, Brittany, and Shelby Schmitt; one great-great grandchild, Aiden; three nephews, Clyde Coombs Jr. of Longview, Texas, Dick Schmitt of Osceola, Wis., and Bill Schmitt and two nieces, Carol (Mike) Buege and Helen Joy Johnson, both of Green Bay, Wis.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Coombs of Iron Mountain, Edna Schmitt of Kingsford, and Helen Shefsky of Marinette, Wis.; two brothers, Walter Schmitt of Kingsford and John Schmitt of Iron Mountain; and one niece, Joyce Hoaglund of Kingsford.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Dick Kreider will officiate.
Burial will be in the Westlawn cemetery in Racine.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to WVCY Radio at VCY America, 3434 West Kilbourn Ave., Milwaukee, Wis., 53208.

Marion Alleva
IRON MOUNTAIN - Marion A. 'sis' Alleva, 76, of Freeman's Nursing Center in Kingsford, formerly of Iron Mountain, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Marion was born on Dec. 24, 1927, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of the late Anton and Edith (Wright) Alleva. She was a resident of the area for her entire life.
She enjoyed her family and many friendships with residents, staff and visitors of the Freeman's Nursing Center.
She is survived by five brothers, Tony Alleva of Kingsford, Raymond (Jean) Alleva of Kingsford, Marvin (Margie) Alleva of Breitung Township, Arthur (Jill) Alleva of Iron Mountain, and Allan Alleva of Freeman's Nursing Center of Kingsford and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Marion was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Alleva and Mabel Alleva and two brothers, Albert Alleva and Eugene 'Gene' Alleva.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Rev. Dr. Meredith Rupe will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

Ruth Erickson
KINGSFORD - Ruth H. Erickson, 108, of Kingsford, died Jan. 27, 2004, at Freeman Convalescent Home.
She was born in Bruce Crossing on August 11, 1895, and was the daughter of the late Carl and Sophia Erickson.
Ruth graduated from high school and then received her diploma as a dental assistant from the McCarrie School in Chicago in 1926. She worked as a practical nurse in Chicago, Ironwood and Marquette. In 1954 she moved to Kingsford. She and her brother Adolph owned and operated Erickson's homemade donuts until 1968. Ruth moved back to Bruce Crossing and spent several years caring for her mother prior to her mother's death.
Ruth is survived by several nieces and nephews including Lillian Heath of Bellevue, Wash.
Visitation will be on Monday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Rev. Ronald Wolfe will officiate.

Alois Strand
NIAGARA, Wis. - Alois 'Al' Strand Jr., 62, of 933 Main St., Niagara, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Al was born Oct. 7, 1941, in Stambaugh, son of the late Alois Sr. and Mary (Gufrovich) Strand.
After graduating from Iron River High School, he served in the National Guard.
On June 15, 1963, he married the former Patricia Zanon. Pat, the love of his life, preceded him in death on April 16, 1987.
Al worked for GAF in Pembine, Wis. for 15 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Balsam Street Christian Church in Kingsford.
He loved to hunt and fish, and trapped when he was younger. Al enjoyed dancing on Sundays at the C&R.; He was an avid Minnesota Vikings football fan.
He was very handy and enjoyed working with his hands and doing leather and wood projects.
He is survived by three sons, Al Strand III of Las Vegas, Nev., Frank (Kathie) Strand of Iron Mountain, and Tony (Dianna) Strand of Las Vegas; a sister, Mary Ann Strand of Milwaukee; his mother-in-law, Ann Zanon of Caspian; two grandchildren, Dallas Strand of Iron Mountain and Amber Strand of Las Vegas; and many other special relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Balsam Street Christian Church in Kingsford.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at the church. Pastor William Condray will officiate.
Burial will be in the Niagara cemetery.
