John Bertoldi
IRON MOUNTAIN - John L. Bertoldi, 82, of 900 Woodward Ave., Iron Mountain, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born July 23, 1921, in Norway, son of the late Louis and Eva (Engibous) Bertoldi. John was a lifelong resident of this area and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1939. He attended Marquette University and graduated with a degree in business. John served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In July of1965, he married
Marie Tabaka and she preceded him in death on Sept. 11, 1966.
John was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain, where he had served as an usher for many years. He was a longtime member of the Iron Mountain Lions Club and had held many positions through the years. John was a charter member of Wildlife Unlimited and served as treasurer for many years. He was very active in scouting, the Hiawathaland Council and the Menominee Range District.
He was also a former board member of the First National Bank of Iron Mountain, a former member of the Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA) board in Iron Mountain, and past president of the Dickinson County Chamber of Commerce.
He enjoyed spending time at camp with his dogs and he enjoyed fishing in his earlier years. John had quite a 'green thumb' and was proud of the beautiful roses he grew each year. He was fondly known as 'Grandpa John' to all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by one son, David Tabaka in 1991.
He is survived by three children, Mary Couper, John Paul Tabaka and Jane (Dennis) Santini, all of Iron Mountain; two brothers, George (Fran) Bertoldi and Bill (Joyce) Bertoldi, both of Kingsford; a sister, Mary Bertoldi of Iron Mountain; and five grandchildren, Scott (Melissa) Couper, Angela Santini, Kristina Santini, Becky Couper and Louis Santini.
Visitation will be held Monday from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at 6 p.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Pallbearers will be Gary Sparpana, Joe Spigarelli, Bruce Torretti, Jim Urbany, Pete Tomassoni, and Jerry Morelli. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Gingrass, John Dougoveto and John Englund.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church Restoration Fund.

Walter Johnson
IRON MOUNTAIN - Walter O. Johnson, 92, of 304 Dickinson Blvd., Kingsford, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Maryhill Manor in Niagara, Wis.
He was born Jan. 19, 1911, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Charles and Carrie (Gustafson) Johnson. He was a lifelong resident of the area and married
Irene Lindell on April 2, 1938, in Iron Mountain. She preceded him in death on Sept. 26, 2000.
Walter worked for WEPCO as a line foreman for 38 years, retiring in 1973.
He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain and ushered for many years. He enjoyed helping his wife at home, deer hunting, fishing, and gardening. In his younger years, he played first baseman for the Rangers baseball team.
Walter is survived by his daughter, Alice (Henry) Nehmer of Jackson, lower Michigan; a brother, Calvin Johnson of Iron Mountain; a sister, Laura (Arthur) Salina of California; three grandchildren, Bethany (Shannon) Krutsch of Jackson, CareyLynn (Mark) Flaugher of Chelsea, lower Michigan and Rebecca (Charles) Emmons of Brooklyn, lower Michigan; and five great-grandchildren, Christian and Cayla Krutsch, Ethan and Michelle Flaugher and Mya Emmons.
He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Mabel Johnson, Edith Johnson, Astrid Lofstrom and Eleanor Moroni; and one brother, Ewald Johnson.
Memorial services will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. Pastor Stephen Cowen will officiate. Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in his memory.

Kenneth D'Amour
KINGSFORD - Kenneth E. D'Amour, 48, of 1824 Woodward Ave., Kingsford, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 26, 1955, in Iron Mountain, son of Dr. William D'Amour and the late Priscilla (Sewall) D'Amour. He was a lifelong resident of this area and graduated from Iron Mountain High School.
Ken had worked for the Laborer's Union. He was very handy and knowledgeable when it came to welding, electrical, and home construction.
He enjoyed snowmobiling and ice fishing and spent numerous hours building the perfect ice shack.
The love of his life was his chihuahua, 'Dinky, ' who was so tiny that she fit in the palm of his hand and was able to travel in his shirt pocket.
Ken will be missed by his family and dear friends who were an important part of his life.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Priscilla D'Amour on March 16, 2001.
Ken is survived by his father, Dr. William D'Amour of Kingsford; five brothers and sisters, Mary (Bill) Paupore, George D'Amour, John (Nancy) D'Amour, Rosemary (Lee) Manner, and Dr. Robert (Marie) D'Amour. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the American Martyr's Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Family and friends will share a time of fellowship in the Fr. Hughes hall following the funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

John Querio
SAGOLA - John B. Querio, 98, of 701 W. Sagola, formerly of Channing and Crystal Falls, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
John was born on July 10, 1905, in Nashwauk, Minn., the son of the late Frank and Natalina (Targetta) Querio.
He married
Rene Rochon on Feb. 9, 1932, in Iron Mountain. She preceded him in death in February of 2001.
John worked for the Ford Motor Co. for many years before retiring in 1951.
He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to fish and hunt. He also enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Joseph, Anton, Frank, Donald, and Caesar, and four sisters, Agnes, Mary, Louise, and Ann.
John is survived by a very special niece, Gloria Baker of Marquette, and one sister, Lena Brockington of Pinecrest Medical Care Facility, formerly of Iron Mountain.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. A time of sharing will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Channing cemetery.

Pearl L. Troyan
ESCANABA - Pearl L. Troyan, 79, of 2913 3rd Ave. South, Escanaba, formerly of 815 W. Fleshiem St., Iron Mountain, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.
She was born Feb. 26, 1924, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Albert and Angeline (St. Louis) Tippett. Pearl moved to Ishpeming with her family and graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1942.
She married
Andrew Curtiss Troyan on Sept. 16, 1944. He preceded her in death on April 8, 1980.
Pearl was a very active member of First Presbyterian Church and a former member of the church choir. She was a former member of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Women's Club and the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Music Club. Pearl was also a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Girl Scout Council for many years. She volunteered for the Dickinson County Cancer Society.
She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Swanson of Gladstone and two sisters, Shirley (Frank) Moschet of Silver Bay, Minn. and Marilyn (Ron) Struebing of Iron Mountain.
Visitation will be held Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, from 11 a.m. to noon at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.
A memorial service will be held Monday at noon at the church. Rev. Michael March will officiate. Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dickinson County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Mary Ann Walstrom
AURORA, Wis. - Mary Ann Walstrom, 62, died peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at her home with her family at her side.
She was born Nov. 16, 1941, in Florence, Wis., the daughter of the late Herbert and Dorothy (LaFebvre) Christesen.
Mary graduated from Florence High School in 1959. She married
Bruce Walstrom on June 24, 1961, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Florence.
She retired in 1998 from the Kingsford Medical Center, where she worked in the office as a billing and insurance specialist for more than 20 years.
Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aurora and served on the church council. Mary enjoyed traveling, hiking, sewing, and gardening. She was a very loving and kind wife, mother, and grandmother. She was loved by all who knew her.
Mary is survived by her husband, Bruce; four children, Steve Walstrom of Cloquet, Minn., Carole (Marvin) Wall of DePere, Wis., Kent (Charlene) Walstrom of Aurora and Pam (Steve) Koltz of Allouez, Wis.; one brother, Ron Christesen of Iron Mountain, a sister, Elaine (Jack) Rochon of Florence, and eight grandchildren, Brian, Andy, and Scott Wall, Sarah, Jay, and Joseph Walstrom, and Collin and Ryan Koltz.
Visitation will be today from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Parish prayers will be recited today at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Aurora. Fr. Michael Betley will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in the spring at the Homestead-Aurora cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Marv Wall, Steve Koltz, Tom Rochon, David Rochon, Mike Glime and Bill Christesen.

Joseph Lagina
IRON MOUNTAIN - Joseph A. Lagina, 82, of 1805 Pyle Drive, Kingsford, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Joe was born June 5, 1921, in Escanaba, son of the late Andrew and Cecelia (Quinn) Lagina. He was raised in Iron Mountain and attended Iron Mountain High School, graduating in 1941.
Joe entered the U.S. Army in 1942, serving as a combat medic during the second wave of Normandy. He was also stationed in England, France, Germany and Belgium before returning to the states in 1945.
After being honorably discharged from the Army, Joe worked for Chicago Northwestern Railroad until retiring in 1981.
Joe enjoyed baseball. He pitched and was a third baseman for 'Cavi's Crystal Bar' in Aurora, Wis. for many years. He also enjoyed taking drives in the car, going out for coffee, playing cards and spending time with family. He was an avid Pack and Notre Dame fan. Joe had a great sense of humor and will be sadly missed.
He is survived by two sisters, Mary Jane Conard of Ironwood and Nancy (Louis) Bal of Norway; many nieces and nephews, including Cindy (Dave) McRae, Judy White, Jeff Conard, Steve (Jovey) Bal, Teresa (Mike) Swanson, Denise (Steve) Feira, Colleen (Pete) Betker, Maureen Vieau, and Joe Bal; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and William; a sister, Helen, and a nephew, Michael.
Visitation will be held Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
