John Gayan
KINGSFORD - John 'Jack' Gayan, 82, of 1001 W. Hoadley St., Kingsford, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at Maryhill Manor in Niagara, Wis.
He was born on May 18, 1922, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Rudolph and Julia (Collins) Gayan. Jack graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1940 and was a resident of the area his entire life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Burma, India.
Jack married Rosemary Janeshek on Oct. 26, 1963, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. He worked as a machinist at Lake Shore Inc. for many years until retiring in 1983.
He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church, the Golden K and the American Legion Carpenter Clash Post 363. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and bocce ball.
Jack is survived by his wife, Rosemary; three brothers, Gerald Gayan of Iron Mountain, Joseph (Beverly) Gayan of New Mexico, and Tom (Carol) Gayan of Kingsford; two sisters, Rosemary (Joe) Kmiec of Norway and June (Ralph) Izzo of Iron Mountain; two step-grandchildren, Richelle Barker of Milwaukee and Nicholle Lawler of Kingsford; two step great-grandchildren, Shelby Lawler and Dalton Lawler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two stepsons, Richard and James Barker and one sister, Helen Swanberg.
Visitation will be today from 5 p.m to 7 p.m. at the Kingsford Funeral Home. Parish prayers will be recited at 6:30 p.m. this evening.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at 11 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

Ruth Sand
IRON MOUNTAIN - Ruth M. Sand, 90, formerly of 112 W. Ludington St., Iron Mountain, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Freeman Nursing Center of Kingsford.
She was born on Jan. 11, 1914, in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late Louis and Suzanna (Sekerka) Roth.
Ruth moved to this area from Alpha at the age of nine and had been a resident here since that time. She attended Iron Mountain High School and Dundon's Business College.
She married Bertel Sand on Nov. 16, 1946, and he preceded her in death in September of 1975.
Ruth was an active member of First Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school for more than 30 years. She enjoyed visiting people in the hospital and was a faithful volunteer for the hospital league at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club (BPW). Ruth was a den leader for the Cub Scouts for several years and donated blood for many years.
She and her sister-in-law, Evelyn Roth, operated a cake decorating business for several years. Ruth and her husband also owned and operated their own trucking company, Sand Transfer for five years. She had worked for Hayward Interiors for more than 20 years. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards.
Ruth is survived by a son, David (Lynn) Sand of Iron Mountain; two grandchildren, Sarah (Tim) Wenzel of Plainfield, Wis. and Amy Sand of Iron Mountain; and three nieces, Barbara (Jim) Edberg of Felch, Lois (Alan) Granquist of Breitung Township, and Kristin Stefani of Escanaba.
She was preceded in death by her twin brother, Ralph Roth, and brothers, John and Lewis Roth.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday at the First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday at the church. Rev. Peter Jonas will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory.

Joseph E. Draxler
IRON MOUNTAIN - Joseph E. Draxler, 78, formerly of 308 E. Blaine St., Iron Mountain, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
He was born on June 5, 1926, in Iron Mountain, the son of the late Joseph and Irene (Hanas) Draxler. He was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain and he graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1944. Joe was an Army veteran of World War II. After the service, he graduated from Dundon's Business College with a degree in accounting.
He married Louise 'Dolly' Fontecchio on Sept. 16, 1950, at the Immaculate Conception Church. She preceded him in death on May 3, 2002.
Joe was the chief accountant for the city of Iron Mountain from 1948 until his retirement in 1981. He was also the administrator of the HUD program for many years and worked part-time for Fleury-Singler & Co. doing tax work.
Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus-4th Degree, the Immaculate Conception Church and an usher at church. He was also a member of the Piasano Club and the Holy Name Society. He enjoyed doing volunteer work for the church, St. Vincent DePaul and the Knights of Columbus. For many years, Joe ran the bingo at both Immaculate Conception and the K of C. He also enjoyed trout fishing in his earlier years.
Joe is survived by one son, Michael (Peggy) Draxler of Iron Mountain; one brother, James (Bev) Draxler of Fond Du Lac, Wis.; two sisters, Margaret (Edward) Piatti of Kingsford and Rita (Richard) Gray of Ishpeming; two grandchildren, Tyler and Ashley and one great-granddaughter, Alexis.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park. Pallbearers will be James Draxler, Richard Gray, Edward Piatti, Tracy Miller, Wayne Carter and Francis Antonetti.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.

Kitty Menger
CRYSTAL FALLS - Kitty 'Kathleen' Menger, 74, of 264 Jule Lake Road, Crystal Falls, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 14, 1930, in Kingsford, daughter of the late Arthur and Dorothea (Wegner) Berg.
Kitty graduated from Kingsford High School in 1948. She married Robert Menger of Milwaukee on Oct. 6, 1951. Kitty and Bob lived in Wauwatosa, Wis. for 30 years where they raised three daughters. She was a devoted Girl Scout and 4-H leader. After Bob retired, they moved to Jule Lake in 1990.
Kitty was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. She had a great love of music, which included teaching piano, singing tenor for the church choir, and square dancing with the Diamond Squares.
Kitty was an avid reader, painter, seamstress, quilter, gardener, and liked to travel. She loved crafts of all kinds and her art work was greatly admired and appreciated by family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Menger; daughters, Roberta Menger of Bayfield, Wis., Dede Menger (Paul Javins) of Milwaukee and Carol (Jeff) Exner of Louisville, Ky.; a brother, Bruce 'Chuck' (Mary) Berg of Imlay City, lower Michigan; a sister, Pat Carlson of Crystal Falls; and grandchildren, Nathan Delano, Jack Baggerley, and Lisa and Sarah Exner.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at the church. Pastor Lee Liverance will officiate.

Vivian LeFevre
IRON MOUNTAIN - Vivian L. LeFevre, 97, of 514 East B St., Iron Mountain, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
Vivian was born Sept. 24, 1906, in Green Bay, Wis., daughter of the late Henry and Mabel (Brown) Hansen. She was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain. She married Alphonse LeFevre in 1923 in Green Bay and he preceded her in death in 1982.
Vivian worked at the Men's Store, Colenso's, and Montgomery Ward's, retiring as a fashion buyer. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford where she was involved in the church circles. She was also a member of the Women's Club and Business and Professional Women (BPW). She enjoyed knitting.
Vivian was preceded in death by a son, Donald and a son-in-law, Stephen Basile.
She is survived by two daughters, Betty Basile of Iron Mountain and Rosemary (Merrill) Anderson of Hot Springs, Ark.; a sister, Fern Pierson of Dalton, lower Michigan; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
Visitation was held today from noon until 1 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Michael March officiating. Burial was in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with funeral arrangements.

Joyce Swanson
QUINNESEC - Joyce Marion Swanson, 82, of Quinnesec, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born May 1, 1922, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Antilla) Nelson.
Joyce graduated from Quinnesec High School in 1940.
She married Walter Swanson on May 24, 1941, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
In her earlier years, Joyce worked on the planes at the bomber's plant and they were known as 'Molly the Riveters.'
She was a member of Calvery Lutheran Church. Joyce dedicated her life to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all of those who knew her.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Walter; two daughters, Suzanne (William) Long of Grand Ledge, lower Michigan and Penny (Karl) Struble of Lansing; a twin sister, Janet Michaud of Quinnesec; eight grandchildren, Chad and Heidi Eaton, Michael Parrott, William (Deborah) Long Jr., Bryan and Aaron Long, Shannon Beauchamp, and Joshua Struble; nine great-grandchildren, Jordan Eaton, Kristen and Aliyah Eaton, Jaylin and Caleb Cooper, Austin and Macon Martin, Sydney Long and Christopher Briggs; a special niece, Kathy Michaud; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Allan Swanson; three brothers, Charles, Donald, and Robert Nelson; and four infant sisters, Lorraine, LaVerne, Eunice, and Doris Nelson.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until noon at Calvary Lutheran Church in Quinnesec.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at noon at the church. Rev. Jim Holmberg will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Calvary Lutheran Church.

Betty Marie Carobine
IRON MOUNTAIN - Betty Marie Carobine, 79, of N5101 M-95, Iron Mountain, died Thursday, July 15, 2004 at her home.
She was born March 15, 1925 in Iron Mountain, the daughter of the late Fred and Stella (Dessureau) Rochon. She graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1943 and has been a lifelong resident of the area.
She married Primo Carobine on May 21, 1947, at St. Mary & St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1997.
She was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mario and Delfina Carubini.
Betty was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Iron Mountain.
She is survived by four sons, John (Sandra) of Iron Mountain, Peter (Sheryl) of Kingsford, Anthony (Cathy) of Iron Mountain, and James (Jean) of Homestead, Wis.; a brother, J. Robert (Kathleen) Rochon of Iron Mountain; 10 grandchildren, Joseph and Rachel Carobine, Elizabeth (Larry) Benz, Sara Carobine, Jennifer, Brenda and Alison Carobine, Amber, Zach, and Lauren Carobine and one great grandchild, Joshua Benz.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Services will be on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek and Fr. Lee Kahrs will concelebrate the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park. Pallbearers will be John, Peter, Anthony, James, and Joseph Carobine, Sandro Carubini, and Larry Benz.
The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is in charge of the arrangements.
