Billie (Bill) Dean Shepler

Nov. 14, 1932 - Jan. 27, 2005

Billie (Bill) Dean Shepler, age 72, of Ithaca, died January 27, 2005 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma.
Bill was born November 14, 1932 to Raymond and Rhea May (Earegood) Shepler in Alma, Michigan. Bill outlived three loving wives, Juana Beltran, whom he married April 22, 1953, she preceded him in death on December 29, 1985, he then married Louise Reeves in May of 1987, she preceded him in death in April of 1994 and Kathy Shaw, whom he married January 15, 1995, she preceded him in death on February 8, 2001.

Bill worked in a variety of occupations, he drove a truck for many years for Redmond Industries in Alma, he worked at Rite Aid in Ithaca, he prepared taxes for more than 30 years. He also worked for Michigan Bookkeeping in Saginaw, Flint, and Lansing, and did accounting out of his home. Bill served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a loyal University of Michigan football fan, and loved to golf with his brothers and mother. He also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and cooking. Bill enjoyed people and did not like to sit at home, he was a real flirt with the ladies.

Bill is survived by his sons, Mike Shepler of Ithaca, Manuel Shepler of St. Louis, and Art (Karol) Shepler of Saginaw; grandchildren, Neal, Nicole, Desiree, Cuyler, and Taryn; one great grandchild, Brenden; sister, Judy Fisher of Alma; half sisters, Sheila Wright of Muir and Linda Billings of Tennessee; and half brother, Randy Shepler of Carson City. He was preceded in death by his three loving wives; brothers, Art Shepler and Kenny DeLine; and baby sister, Shirley Shepler.

Services for Bill will be 11 a.m. January 31, 2005, at the Ithaca United Methodist Church. Rev. David McBride will officiate and burial will follow at North Star cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, January 29, from 6-8 p.m. and Sunday, January 30 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

James Harold Monroe

Oct. 26, 1919 - Feb. 2, 2005

James Harold Monroe, age 85 of Elkart Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at his residence from an extended illness.
Mr. Monroe was born on October 26, 1919 the son of Erie and Edna (Merrihew) Monroe in Pontiac, MI. He married Jenny Ostrowski on February 12, 1945 in New York City. Mr. and Mrs. Monroe would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary next Saturday. Mr. Monroe was a brick mason in New York City for over 33 years until he retired to Elkhart, IN in the early 1980's. He enjoyed woodworking and woodcrafts and was a natural handyman. He was an avid HAM radio operator, with the call sign of "N9PCM". During W.W.II he served with the U.S. Coast Guard patrolling the Eastern Seaboard and escorting supply convoys to North Africa, crossing the Atlantic a total of nine times. He was a Chief Motor Machinist on the Coast Guard Cutter USS Newell. During his service, he endured submarine torpedo attacks and enemy dive bombers.

Mr. Monroe is survived by his wife, Jenny Monroe; two sons, Robert J. "R.J." (Gail) Monroe of Middlebury, IN and Gerald (Cynthia) Monroe of Crystal Lake, IL; one daughter, Mrs. Albert (Jacqueline) Boccio of Massapequa, NY; one sister, Carol Fish of Pontiac, MI; three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hope Monroe and Ruth Dutcher.

There will be one hour of visitation prior to the 3:00 p.m. funeral at Billings Funeral Home on Saturday, February 5, 2005. The Reverend Keith M. McFarren of the Faith United Methodist Church of South Bend will officiate. Military Honors will be rendered with grandson, Airman First Class Christopher J. Monroe of Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, OK presenting the flag. Cremation will then take place with further arrangements pending.

Bernice Lucinda Snover

July 9, 1913-Jan. 27, 2005

Bernice Lucinda Snover, age 91 of Farwell, passed away January 27, 2005 at the Northwoods Nursing Center in Farwell. Bernice was born the daughter of Emory and Minnie (Korf) Kilbreath on July 9, 1913 in Imlay City. She was united in marriage to Robert Snover of December 4, 1930. She was a member of the Blue Star Mothers, and the Rebekah Lodge. Bernie was a member of the Clare Church of the Nazarene.
Bernice is survived by her five sons Robert of Arkansas, David (Patricia) of Lake, Ronald (Lucille) of Lake, Samuel (Dawn) of Farwell, and Joseph of Texas; three daughters, Betty Lou (Robert) Giddings of Vassar, Elaine Searles of Tennessee, and Marilyn (Charles) Smith of Snover. Bernice is also survived by 35 plus grandchildren, 100 plus great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren, along with many other relatives and friends.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her daughter Barbara Phenix, one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, and 3 grandsons.

Funeral services will take place on Monday, January 31 at 11:00 A.M. at the Clare Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Jim Young officiating. Burial will be in the Surrey Twp. cemetery in Farwell. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-5 and 7-9 P.M., with a Rebekah's Lodge service at 7;30 P.M. Memorials may be made to the family of Bernice Snover. Arrangements by the Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home, Inc. of Clare.

Nina A. Adams

Sept. 23, 1909 - Feb. 5, 2005

Nina A. Adams, 95, of Sumner, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Heartland Georgian Bloomfield in Troy.
Nina was born Sept. 23, 1909, in East Lansing, the daughter of Oliver Keese and Jessie Mary (Garver) White. She married Arnold Calvin Adams on Jan. 4, 1936, in LaPorte, Ind. He preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1978.

She received her B.S. degree in teaching from Central Michigan University, and taught school in the Alma school district. She was a member of the Ithaca United Methodist Church and Retired School Teachers' Association. She enjoyed farming, gardening and knitting.

Nina is survived by her grandchildren, Holly (Gary) Elick, Teresa (Greg Prentice) McWilliams, Beth (Steve) Nosanchuk and Mike McWilliams; her great-grandchildren, Allison and Ian Elick and Jacob Nosanchuk; her sisters, Kitty Coin and Ruth Bouts; and her brother, Jim White. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; her daughter, Virginia Adams McWilliams; her sister, Betty White; and her brothers, Tom, Robert, Stuart and Francis White.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at the Barden Funeral Home in Ithaca with the Rev. David McBride officiating. Burial will follow in the Ithaca cemetery.

Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ithaca United Methodist Church.

Wesley Robert Smith

Dec. 16, 1960-Jan. 26, 2005

Wesley Robert Smith, age 44, or Rosebush, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2005 at his home. Wesley was born December 16, 1960 in Petersburg, Michigan, the son of George Wesley and Wilma May Smith. Wesley married Dawn Diane Hodges on May 18, 1996 at Chippewa Lake. He had several jobs throughout the years. He faced many obstacles in life, his eyesight failed in the late eighties, but he never let that interfere in his life. He worked on cars and was a regular at karoke at the Peppermint Lounge in Clare. He also loved spending time with his Basset hounds, Bo and Lady. His love of people gained his many friends and he never met a stranger.

Wesley is survived by his mother Wilma Johnson of Rosebush; son Nicholas (Stacy) Abbott of Clare; stepdaughter Angela Aten of Traverse City; sister Jeanette (Keith) Jacobs of Rosebush, Marie Hanes of Mt. Pleasant, Shelby Smith of Clare; brother James (Penny) Smith of Monterosa, Arizona, Rodger (MaryJo) Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Curtis Smith of Clare; stepmother Lori Smith of Clare; and several nieces and nephews. Wesley was preceded by his father George Wesley smith, and siblings Eddie, Frosty, and Ruthanne Ferris.

Services for Wesley will take place on Monday, January 31, 2005 at 2:00 P.M. at the Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home in Clare. Friends may meet with the family on Monday from 10 A.M. until the time of service. burial will be in the Rosebush cemetery. memorials may be made to the family of Wesley Smith to help defer funeral expenses.

Margaret E. Gilhouse-Roe

Nov. 14, 1922-Jan 31, 2005

Margaret E. Gilhouse-Roe, age 82, of Adrian passed away January 31, 2005 at Bixby Medical Center. She was born November 14, 1922 in St. Louis, Michigan the daughter of Floyd and Bernice (Healey) Goodyear. On February 14, 1948 she married Albert Gilhouse. He preceded her in death in November 1977. In May of 1980 she married Elwin Bill Roe. He preceded her in death in November 1998. Margaret enjoyed her life as a homemaker and a teacher. She was past Grand Chief of Pythian Sisters of Michigan and active member of Minnehaha Temple No. 43 in Tipton, Michigan. She enjoyed community service work and attened conventions. Margaret loved playing piano and violin. Music was very important to her. She liked the company of people and having lunch with friends and the entertainment at gatherings. She also loved to play cards and dominoes as well as write poetry. Margaret was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her family will greatly miss her.

Surviving Margaret are her sons; Robert and his wife Mary Gilhouse, Riverside, CA, Alan Gilhouse, Blissfield, two sisters, Mildred (Roland) Russell, Adrian, Mary Jane Good, Bradenton, Fl, four grandchildren, Aaron (Michele) Gilhouse, Alyson Gilhouse, Zachary Gilhouse, Benjamin Gilhouse, two great grandchildren, Justine Gilhouse, and Ava Allred. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother in law, Fran and Skeets Dosson, brother, Leo Bud Goodyear, son, Charles who passed away in 1976, two brother in laws, Lee Good, and Earl Gilhouse.

Funeral services for Margaret will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 4, 2005 at Braun Everiss Wagley Funeral Home with Fr. Jack Loughran, O.S.F.S. as celebrant. Burial will follow at Tipton cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday, from 2-4 and 6-8p.m. If desired, memorial contributions in memory of Margaret may be made to Pythian Sisters of Blissfield Senior Center. Envelopes are available at Braun Everiss Wagley Funeral Home.

Robert E. Greenhoe

July 4, 1917-February 1, 2005

Robert E. 'Bob' Greenhoe, age 87, of Alma passed away on February 1, 2005 at his son's home in Riverdale. Visitation will be held at the Dewey Funeral Home in Alma today, Thursday, Feb. 3, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The funeral service will be held on Friday at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. with Elder Susan Loenshal of the Eastminster Presbyterian Church officiating. burial will take place in Riverdale cemetery, Alma.

Bob was born on July 4, 1917 in Gratiot County to Lewis and Fannie (Thompson) Greenhoe. He graduated from Alma High School. On June 3, 1937 he married Irene Morton in Alma. He served in the U.S. Navy on the Destroyer, USS Sigsbee during WWII. Bob worked as a truck driver for over thirty years and was a pilot for sixty years. He owned several airplanes including a rare one-of-a-kind model. He was a founding member of the Alma Experimental Aircraft Asso. and belonged o the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Asso. He belonged to the VFW for 50 years. Bob will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends.

Surviving are one son, Robert (Mary Ellen) Greenhoe of Riverdale; two grandchildren, Robert (Michel) Greenhoe of Houghton, MI, and Lisa (Dave) Ellis of Montrose; three great grandchildren, Caleb and Kaitlyn Ellis both of Montrose, and Lynn Greenhoe of Houghton, MI; and a sister, Betty Crispin of St. Louis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene in 2002; a son, Randall in 2000; a great-granddaughter, Meagen; and three brothers, Dean, Russell, and Kenneth Greenhoe.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alma Chapter of Experimental Aircraft Asso.

The family is being served by the Dewey Funeral Home of Alma.

Daisy L. Barber

April 18, 1916 - Jan. 30, 2005

Daisy L. Barber, age 88 of Clare, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2005 at her home. Daisy was born the daughter of Roy and Martha Jane (Seymour) Schaar on April 18, 1916 in Clare. She married Clayton Barber in 1933 and her predeceased her in 1975, she then married Leo Gilboe in 1977, and her predeceased her in 1991. Daisy had lived in the Clare area her entire life; she had worked at the Clare City Bakery as a Baker. She enjoyed gardening, and watching the birds and deer in her backyard.

Daisy is survived by her sons, Ford (Barbara) Barber of Coleman and Carl Barber of Clare; her daughter, Vida Jean (James) Teeter of Arizona; a sister, Vera Worden of Waterford; 12 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and numerous great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Services will take place on Friday, February 4, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Cherry Grove cemetery in Clare. Friends may meet with the family on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, or to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were handled by the Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home, Inc., Clare.

Shirley Ann Day

Oct. 3, 1942-Feb. 1, 2005

In Loving Memory of Shirley A. Day (Sprague), age 62, of Rockford, MI, who was taken from her home in Rockford, MI, by her Guardian Angel on February 1, 2005. She was put in his loving arms where she now feels no pain and knows no suffering.

Funeral Services for Shirley will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2005, at 2 p.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant with the Reverend Joe Sprague Sr. officiating. Friends may call at Clark Funeral Chapel on Friday, February 4, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Michigan. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Shirley A. Day was born on October 3, 1942, to Philemon and Eleanor Sprague. She was preceded in death by her father Philemon Sprague, Sr., her son Robert Chamberlain, Jr., 1 grandson, her grandparents, a sister, brother, 5 nephews, and 1 great niece.

Shirley was a precious, loving wife, daughter, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, aunt and great-aunt, and a wonderful friend to everyone.

Shirley A. Day leaves behind her loving friend and husband, Amos Day, Jr.; 4 beautiful daughters, Darlene Highley (Butch), Brenda Champlin (Rex) of Mt. Pleasant, Deb Marler (Tony) of Tennessee, Dianna Chamberlain of Baraga, MI; 17 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren. Shirley is also survived by her loving, caring, and sweet mother, Eleanor Sprague of Mt. Pleasant. Shirley is survived by 6 brothers, Philemon Sprague, Jr. (Bean), Larry Sprague (Flossie), Wayne Sprague, Ken Sprague (Val), Gary Sprague (Lynnette Franco), and Bernie Sprague (Bonnie); 2 sisters, Barbara Sprague and Jo Kathy Bennett, all from Mt. Pleasant; her brother-in-law Cecil Day of Dayton, TN; and sisters-in-law Cheryl Williams and Paula Kieth of Battle Creek, MI. Shirley will be greatly missed by her Schnauzer, Kee-Wah-Zee.

The memories of this strong-spirited, kind and gentle woman will forever be in our hearts and we will hold onto them with love and respect.

Hovey, John J.
June 28, 1946 - February 1, 2001

John J. Hovey, 54, of Rosebush, died on Thursday, February 1, 2001, in Harrison, Michigan.

A Funeral Mass for John J. Hovey will be held Monday, February 5th, at 11 a.m. from St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Rosebush, with Fr. John Cotter and Sister Mary Ellen McDonald officiating. Interment will be in St. Henry’s cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, February 3rd, from 7-9 p.m., and on Sunday, February 4th, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. There will be a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral chapel. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in memory of John may consider St. Henry’s School or donor’s choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

John was born on June 28, 1946, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Gerald Harrison and Julie Margaret (Burch) Hovey. He graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1965. John married Elizabeth Fulk on November 13, 1965. He served in the U.S. Army from January 1966 to February 1968. John was self-employed as a building contractor for John J. Hovey Builder for the last 25 years. He had worked in construction for over 35 years.

John was a member of the Home Builders Association. He was very active with construction at the Isabella County Fairgrounds and the Habitat for Community. He was involved with the St. Henry’s Administration Board, and John had a great love for St. Henry’s School and especially enjoyed supporting and attending the St. Henry’s Auction for the school’s benefit. John had been awarded the 3-Gallon Pin by the Red Cross Blood Drive.

John loved fishing with Tom and spending time with his grandchildren, going to the movies on Friday nights. He enjoyed spending time with, and helping, his brother Terry. John also enjoyed deer hunting with the Evans boys and socializing at the White Wagon Restaurant in Rosebush.

John is survived by his wife, Beth Hovey of Rosebush; his children, Jonathan Scott Hovey of Mesa, AZ, Jennifer B. Reihl of Rosebush, Julie Sheets (Scott) of Mt. Pleasant; his 4 grandchildren, Kristina Reihl, Hailey Reihl, Laine and Logan Sheets; his mother Julia Hovey and parents-in-law Mac B. and Barbara Fulk of Clare; and his brothers Gerald F. Hovey (Shirley) of Muskegon, Terry Lee Hovey (Evelyn) of Rosebush, and Roderick E. Hovey (Mary) of Rosebush; his sisters Rhonda K. Busch (Bob) of Traverse City and Coriann Thielen (Dave) of Mt. Pleasant. John and Beth have 10 godchildren and many loving nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins and friends.

John was preceded in death by his father, Gerald “Jake” Hovey and his brother Douglas Hovey.

Eldred, Milo Harris
June 22, 1913 - January 30, 2001

Milo Harris Eldred, 87, of Cadillac, Michigan, formerly of Winn, died on Tuesday, January 30, 2001, at Sparrow Medical Center in Lansing.

A Funeral Mass for Milo Eldred will be held Friday, February 2nd, at 11 a.m. from St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Winn, with Fr. Julius A. Spleet officiating. Interment will take place at the Pine River cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday, January 31st from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. and on Thursday, February 1st from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral chapel. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in memory of Milo may consider Community Cancer Services or the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Milo was born on June 22, 1913, in Blanchard, the son of Edmund and Alice (Gustavison) Eldred. Milo was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne Catherine Schafer, whom he married on May 30, 1936, in Beal City. Milo married Lydia Garrison on September 20, 1986, in Cadillac. He was self-employed as a farmer from 1951 to 1985, when he retired. Milo had worked for the Isabella County Road Commission and Roosevelt Oil Refinery. Milo was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Cadillac, the Knights of Columbus and a former member of the Moose Lodge.

Milo is survived by his wife, Lydia Eldred of Cadillac; his children, Alice Tatro of Winn, Patricia Uebele (Gerald) of Blanchard, Shirley Gates (Dave) of Blanchard, Michael “Mick” Eldred and Rhonda Wernette of Mt. Pleasant, step-son Ron Garrison of Lansing; 16 grandchildren and 1 step-grandchild; 23 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Eleanor Eldred of St. Louis.

Milo was preceded in death by his first wife, his sister Violet Eldred, his brother Sherman Eldred and Milo’s twin brother Milan Eldred.
