John Ewig
IRON MOUNTAIN - John W. Ewig, 88, of 524 Stanton St., Iron Mountain, died Thursday, May 26, 2005, at his home.
He was born on March 17, 1917, in Crystal Falls, son of the late Earl and Ada (Bowman) Ewig and had been a lifelong resident of this area.
John graduated from Crystal Falls High School. Following high school he served with the United States Army.
He married the former Phyllis Rahoi on March 23, 1946, in Iron Mountain. John retired in 1977 after working for the Milwaukee Railroad for 42 years.
He loved hunting and was an accomplished gunsmith. He enjoyed designing and improving gun designs. John was a very creative person and an avid reader.
John is survived by his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Jonathan (Ruth) Ewig of Fairbanks, Alaska and Tyrone Ewig of Iron Mountain; his daughter, Stephanie (Roger) Nelson of Traverse City, lower Michigan; three sisters, June (Richard) Feak of Norway, Jeannie (Vern) Bates of Sagola and Mary Lou (Roy) Quinn of Kokomo, Ind.; four grandchildren, Andrew and Kristie Nelson, Vaughn and Talia Ewig; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Arlene Heitz.
Private family services are being held.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with funeral arrangements.

Dana Kranz
KINGSFORD - Dana E. Kranz, 12, of 208 Roseland St., Kingsford, died Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Dana was born on May 9, 1993, in the NICU at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, the daughter of Kyle Kranz and Teresa (Chartier) Kranz. She was a lifelong resident of Kingsford and home schooled through the ISD.
Dana loved music and especially enjoyed watching her mother dance around the room. Her favorite songs were 'Radar Love' and 'Fighter.' Dana was also very fond of her angel collection and her stuffed animals. Her mother noted she had a smile that could melt any heart, and she was brighter than anyone ever knew.
Dana was a member of First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.
She is survived by her mother, Teresa Kranz of Kingsford; her father, Kyle Kranz of Kingsford; maternal grandparents, Richard and Ella Mae Chartier of Niagara, Wis.; paternal grandparents, Barbara and Gary Kranz of Quinnesec; two brothers, Bryce Chartier of Niagara and Travis Kranz of Kingsford; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Rev. Peter Jonas will officiate.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dana's family.

Monte Howard
KINGSFORD - Monte R. Howard, 66, of 536 Cass Ave., Kingsford, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born April 6, 1939, in Edna, Kan., son of the late Roscoe and Vesta (Hunt) Howard.
Mr. Howard received a bachelor of science degree in engineering from UCLA. He worked for North American Aviation on the launch escape system for the first Apollo flight. Monte worked at Daimler-Chrysler for many years until his retirement on Feb. 28, 2001. He moved to Kingsford from Jackson, lower Michigan in 2002.
Monte enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to many area bridge clubs. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 388. He will be greatly missed by his dogs and cats.
Monte married Wanda Logan on Aug. 4, 1962, in Norwalk, Calif.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda; four children, Kevin (Diana) of Milan, lower Michigan, Keith (Tammy) of Marshall, lower Michigan, Kimberly (Kevin) Masicotte of Kingsford and Laura Bohlender of Dillon, Colo.; one brother, Stanley (Julie) of Bell Gardens, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Shauna, Ashley, Mitchell, Randall, Hayley, Paige, Taylor, Chad, C.J., Gerry, and Michael (Julie); and one great-granddaughter, Mercedes.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home. Masonic services will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
The Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home is assisting the family arrangements.

Phylis Cavaiani
IRON MOUNTAIN - Phylis J. Cavaiani, 80, of 426 E. A St., Iron Mountain, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
She was born April 3, 1925, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Marcus and Carrie (McNaughton) LeBlond. Phylis graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1943. During World War II, she had worked in Kenosha, Wis. She lived in Birmingham, lower Michigan for 18 years and she worked for the United Way in the Detroit area for 11 years before she retired. After moving back home, Phylis also worked at the Senior Citizen's Center in Iron Mountain.
She married Albert 'Gabber' Cavaiani on Sept. 15, 1958. He preceded her in death in 1968. Phylis was a member of St. Mary & St. Joseph Church. She enjoyed crafts, cross-stitch, walking and reading.
Phylis is survived by one son, Mark (Karalee) Briggs of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two stepsons, Fred (Alice) Cavaiani of Troy, lower Michigan and Ralph (DeeDee) Cavaiani of Milwaukee; one sister, Margaret Gailbraith of Stephenson; six step-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and several cousins. Also survived by special friends, Pam and Bill Revord and family.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Allard, Patsy Liddle, and infant, Kathryn LeBlond.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Mary & St. Joseph Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, with Fr. Daniel Zaloga officiating.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dickinson County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Harold Dams
KINGSFORD - Harold J. Dams, 91, of 129 Wilson St., Kingsford, died Saturday, May 21, 2005, at his home in Kingsford.
He was born July 30, 1913, in Edmonton, Alberta, son of the late Julius and Bertha (Romundt) Dams. Harold moved to Kingsford with his family when he was a senior and graduated from Kingsford High School in 1932.
He married Gladys Douglas on Dec. 27, 1932, in Iron Mountain. She preceded him in death after 60 years of marriage on June 2, 1993.
Harold worked for Champion Inc. for more than 40 years and retired in 1978. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a former member of the Golden K and the United Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling. Harold also enjoyed dining out and dancing, and he attended many of the senior dances. He looked forward to a weekly trip to the casino and loved to play smear.
He is survived by one daughter; Sandra Mutsch of Kingsford; three grandchildren; Denise (Raymond) Kuder, Dianne Martin, and Debra (Michael) Grailer, all of Kingsford; four great-grandchildren; Charles and Daniel Kuder, Brianna Martin, and Travis Grailer; three sisters-in-law, Veda Hoag, Vera Abramovich, and Eileen Dams and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Irving Dams.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Raymond and Charles Kuder, Mark Brynick, Douglas Hoag, William Abramovich, and Harlan Hartwich.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Audrey Johnson
BREITUNG TOWNSHIP - Audrey A. Johnson, 68, of Breitung Township, lost her battle with lymphoma on Friday, May 20, 2005, at the Dickinson County Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born April 11, 1937, in Iron Mountain, daughter of Einar and Ann (Pearson) Windell of Aurora, Wis. She graduated from Kingsford High School in 1955, and married her high school sweetheart, Melvin Johnson, on Oct. 20, 1956.
She held a few part-time jobs over the years, but for the most part was a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker.
She enjoyed camping, and traveling to many places in the United States and Europe. She was painfully organized in many areas of her life and loved to work on the details of their genealogies, and plan family get-togethers and reunions. She painted, wove baskets, and loved to play games and cards, especially when she won!
God has a larger plan than what we can see. Audrey is in a much better place now, and suffers no more pain. She is there with her grand daughter and many of her friends and relatives that have gone before her. As much as it hurts us right now and we grieve her passing, we also understand that it is a blessing. Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, and just recently her grand daughter, Rhiannon Daugherty.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin Johnson; daughter Danita (Randy) Larson; son Keith (Krisanne) Johnson; grandchildren Miranda (Shaun) Sabotta (and their children Logan, Ethan and Paige), Jacob Johnson and Keri Johnson; and sister, Eunice Barnes, all of Breitung Township; brother, Glenn (Marie) Windell of Aurora, Wis. and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain..
Dave Grant will officiate for a service at 6 p.m. on Wednesday followed by burial at cemetery Park and a meal at the Dorothy Fox Hall.

Beverly Knapp
KINGSFORD - Beverly J. Knapp, 72, of 804 Michael Ave., Kingsford, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Bev was born July 10, 1932, in Charter Oak, Iowa, daughter of the late Erwin and Edna (Nemitz) Greene. She was a 1950 graduate of Long Prairie High School in Long Prairie, Minn.
Bev married Roger Knapp on May 20, 1952, at the Naval Air Station Chapel in Atlantic City, N.J.
She was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church and St. Anne's Circle. She enjoyed playing cards and her bridge club.
Bev also enjoyed bowling, playing golf and tennis until she was no longer able. This interest continued as she followed all sports on TV and in the news. She loved her grandchildren dearly and enjoyed spending time with her family.
Bev is survived by her husband of 52 years, Roger; a daughter, Christine Liebman of DePere, Wis.; a son, Roger Jr. (Becky) Knapp of Cary, Ill.; two sisters, Donna (Lloyd) Bramley of Babbitt, Minn. and Marge (Bob) Lackmann of Sauk Centre, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Esther Greene of Boulder City, Nev.; a brother-in-law, Perry (Betty) Knapp of Lakeville, Minn.; four grandchildren, Matthew and Anne Liebman and Ben and Mark Knapp; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and Pete Greene.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Parish prayers will be recited at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Michael Woempner will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Edward Mierzejewski
NIAGARA, Wis. - Edward Mierzejewski, 81, of Niagara, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at Aurora Bay Care in Green Bay, Wis.
He was born on March 30, 1924, in Milwaukee.
Edward was a mechanic for the Village of Niagara for 39 years. He enjoyed working on cars.
He married Shirley Chartier on Feb. 19, 1944, in Milwaukee.
Ed is survived by his wife, Shirley; seven children, Gary of Giles, Wis., Judy (Thomas) Murray of Gladwin, lower Michigan, Jane (Norbert) Zentner of Green Bay, Wis., Karen (David) Rhodes of Pleasant View, Utah, Susan (Lance) Langley of Bessemer, Ala., Ricky of Loretto, and Lori (Jeff) Tanko of Niagara, Wis.; one brother, John Miers of Milwaukee; one sister, Jane Lidwin of Milwaukee; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Max, Joe, and Casey and two sisters, Pauline and Mary.
Visitation will be Monday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Father Michael Betley will officiate.
Burial will be in Niagara cemetery.
The Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is assisting the family with arrangements.
