Kathryn Herscheid
IRON MOUNTAIN - Kathryn Ann 'Kitty' Herscheid, 92, formerly of 1015 Crowell St., Iron Mountain, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Community.
She was born Aug. 9, 1912, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late John and Anna (Jedda) Scavarda.
Kathryn was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1931. She attended St. Theresa's College in Wanona, Minn.
Kathryn married John P. Herscheid on June 24, 1939, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church and he preceded her in death on April 4, 1987.
She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild, the Daughter's of Isabella, and the Christian Mother's.
Kathryn is survived by a sister, Etta (David) Cavaiani of Iron Mountain; a brother, Donald (Barbara) Scavarda of Ann Arbor, lower Michigan; two aunts; Charlotte Jedda of Iron Mountain and Violet Jedda of Jackson, lower Michigan; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, John Scavarda and a sister, Elizabeth Lincoln.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Raymond Valerio will officiate.
Burial will be at cemetery Park.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Gerald Fayas
IRON MOUNTAIN - Gerald James Fayas, 71, of 812 W. Hughitt St., Iron Mountain, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain following a lengthy illness.
Gerald was born Sept. 18, 1933, in Tipler, Wis. He was the son of the late Paul and Clara (Manke) Fayas. Gerald was a lifelong resident of the Iron Mountain area.
Gerald married the love of his life Sharon Paulson on Oct. 27, 1956. They spent 42 years together before she preceded him in death on May 16, 1998.
Gerald served his country four years with much pride in the U.S. Air Force from January 1952 through December 1955. Stationed in London, England most of those years, he received a National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and honorable discharge.
Gerald worked many years as supervisor at Kafka Asphalt Petroleum Co. until retirement.
He was inspired by every opportunity to help someone in need and his serenity came from the simple things in life. God and family were always number one. With his zest for life he lived to cook, cut up venison, putz at 'the new camp, ' enjoy his grandsons, make sausage, sing, tell a joke or two and devote a lifetime of giving to others. With a giving heart and an open home, there was always room for one more at the kitchen table. He offered such comfort and kindness without expectation.
Survivors include four children, Donna (Tom) Johnson of Iron Mountain, Darlene Hehn of Iron Mountain, Darrell (Debbie) Fayas of Iron Mountain and Diane (Paul) Rasmussen of Iron Mountain; grandsons, Jeremy, Justin, and Jaime Fayas of Iron Mountain; granddaughters, Alicia Hehn of Kingsford and Anne DeCrecsenzo of Iron Mountain; five sisters, Doris Gruell of Kingsford, Evelyn (Orville) Larson, Joyce (Howard) Stenerson of Red Wing, Minn., Lorraine (Eldred) Fayas of Iron Mountain and Carol (Henry) Gardiner of Alburtis, Pa.; a brother, Paul (Wanita) Fayas Jr., of Kingsford, a special lil pal, Riley, and four granddogs; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gerald was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Fayas; son-in-law, Douglas Hehn; and a sister, Gertrude Lindblom.
To know him was to love him. A very loving father, grandpa to many, great friend to all. Forever Together!
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Rev. David Wilton will officiate.
Burial will be at the Quinnesec cemetery.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home with the funeral arrangements.

LaVern Trepp
IRON MOUNTAIN - LaVern O. Trepp, 87, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at the VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
LaVern was born in Kief, N.D. on Dec. 8, 1917, to Clarence and Freada Trepp. He attended school in Niagara, Wis., Kingsford, and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1936. He went on to study chemistry at Augustana College.
As a young man, LaVern was active in ski jumping, was a charter member of the Kiwanis Ski Club. At the age of 22, he was preparing to compete at the newly constructed Pine Mountain ski jump and attempted the first descent of the hill that resulted in a broken hip that terminated his jumping career.
He went on to become an accomplished alpine skier and represented the Midwest Central Division in regional and national competitions.
When our country engaged in World War II, LaVern enlisted in the 87th Mountain Infantry, the original ski troops that soon joined with the 85th and 86th infantry to become the first 10th Mountain Division. He trained in various capacities in Colorado, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Wisconsin and Canada, and then went on to serve in the Asiatic Pacific and European theaters. He was awarded the Combat Medic Badge and Bronze Star Medal during combat in Italy.
LaVern returned to Iron Mountain after his discharge in 1945, acquired the Pine Mountain Alpine Ski Facility that had remained closed during the war and proceeded to rebuild and open the area in December of that year. LaVern focused on the ski business and worked to grow the operation.
Not too many years had passed when he met, grew to love and was joined by marriage to Gloria Fern Johnson from Chicago, who had been a frequent visitor to Pine Mountain. Together, they were blessed with four sons and a daughter.
Over the years, he has served as a director of the Chamber of Commerce, the Upper Peninsula Travel & Recreation Association and he has chaired the United Way Fund drive. LaVern was appointed by Governor Swainson to a study commission for ski area safety and served four governors on the Michigan Ski Area Safety Board where he chaired for eight years.
He has held several positions with the United States Ski Association Central Division including chairman of the Ski Teachers Certification Committee and Alpine Competition Committee. LaVern was an organizer, board member and president of the Central Ski Areas Association; a board member of the National Ski Area Association and the American National Standards Institute for aerial tramways. More recently, he also served as a board member of the National Ski Hall of Fame.
In retirement, LaVern enjoyed golf. He traveled visiting relatives and friends in other areas of the country. He learned to construct radio-controlled aircraft and was active in a local club. Most of all, he enjoyed time with his children and grandchildren.
LaVern was a lifelong member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. He was a past Master of Iron Mountain Masonic Lodge 388, a former member of Kiwanis, the Elks Lodge, the Chippewa Club and the Pine Grove Country Club.
LaVern joins his wife, Gloria and a son, Wendell, in a better place.
A daughter, Andrea; three sons, Devereaux, Laird and Erik and six grandchildren survive him.
Visitation will be held at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain from 10 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Tuesday. The Masonic Lodge will conduct a memorial service at 11:45 a.m. at the church.
Funeral services will follow at noon on Tuesday at the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate.
Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain to handle the funeral arrangements.

Margaret Smaniotti
LORETTO - Margaret J. Smaniotti, 93, of 3913 B St., Loretto, died Thursday, April 21, 2005, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
She was born July 30, 1911, in Norway, the daughter of the late Peter and Eulalie (Deurincke) Van Remoortere.
She married Charles Smaniotti on Oct.19, 1935, in Norway, and he preceded her in death in October 1975. They were lifelong residents of Loretto and owned the Smaniotti's Grocery Store.
Margaret was a member of St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan and the Loretto Hospital Auxiliary
She is survived by her two sons, Richard (Patricia) Smaniotti of Hamilton Lakes and James (Karleene) Smaniotti of Allen, Texas; three grandchildren, Rick (Shannon) Smaniotti of Loretto, Tricia (Patrick) Dani of Hermansville, and Stephanie (Steve) Chenier of Plano, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Samantha and Sydney Smaniotti and Victoria and Jessica Dani; a special niece, Gen Giguere of Escanaba and a special cousin, Angeline Dohmen of Milwaukee.
She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Michael and her sister, Mary Johnson.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. at the church with Fr. Joy Adimakkeel officiating.
Burial will be in the Norway Township cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Eugene Lombardini, Emil Orn, John Geline, Tony Cazzola, Shawn Boone, and John Zanon.

Myrtle Marcelini
KINGSFORD - Myrtle Marcelini, our mother and grandmother, went home to be with her Savior and loved ones on April 21, 2005. We will miss you so much, you were a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was 94 years old. Myrtle was formerly of 221 Lyman St. in Kingsford.
She was born March 31, 1911, in Rockford, Ill., the daughter of the late Cora (Hoover) and Frank Ohlson. At a very young age, Myrtle moved with her family to Eagle River, Wis. After her parent's death, she moved to Kingsford where she met and married the love of her life, Joseph Marcelini on April 20, 1929. They lived in Kingsford, where they raised their four children. Joseph preceded her in death in 1987.
Myrtle worked for many years for Freeman's Convalescent Home as a nurse's aide and at Ball and Christy Furniture as a decorator. She was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church and belonged to the ladies circle of the church. In 1956, Myrtle and her husband moved to Milwaukee where they owned and operated a Sweet Shop. In 1968, they moved to Green Bay, Wis. where they managed the Marvel Lane Apartments.
Myrtle and her husband enjoyed the many friendships they had with the Green Bay Packer players that lived there. Myrtle loved to visit with people and had a knack for making people laugh. While in Green Bay, Myrtle worked at the Curity Work Shop and gave time to nursing homes. In 1999, Myrtle returned to this area and resided at the Evergreen Apartments.
Myrtle is survived by one son, Douglas Marcelini of Milwaukee; three daughters, Donna Marble-Detampel of Green Bay, Darlene (Larry) Lidbeck of Kingsford and Virgie (Don) Pirlot of Niagara, Wis.; 10 grandchildren, Debbie (Rich) Tourangeao of Milwaukee, Denise (Gary) Wierzbinski of Milwaukee, Rick (Jeanette) Marble of Green Bay, Larry Lidbeck of Green Bay, Dawn (Jim) Fulcer of Appleton, Wis., Penney (Alan) Hildebrand of New London, Wis., Dana (Mary) Marcelini of Milwaukee, Jodi (Brad) Schmolesky of Appleton, Tammy (Chris) Clash of Iron Mountain and Stacey (Jeff) Wysocki of Appleton; a grandson-in-law, Dave DeBeck of Green Bay; 23 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and by her 'second' son, Eldin Paguin.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Frances, Harry and Howard Ohlson; two sisters, Edith Smith and Myrna Baumler, a granddaughter, Linda DeBeck; a daughter-in-law, Doreen (Poirer) Marcelini; and two sons-in-law, Merrill Marble and Don Detampel.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to11 a.m. on Friday at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. on Friday at the church. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of the Christian Burial.
Burial will be in the Norway Township cemetery.
A memorial will be established in her memory.

Sidonia Cunningham
KINGSFORD - Sidonia M. Cunningham, 93, of Cuba City, Wis., formerly of this area, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, in Cuba City.
She was born on Nov. 29, 1911, in Carney, daughter of the late Mose and Ida (Dessart) Beaudo. She moved here in 1924, and lived in Breitung Township until 1989. She attended Kingsford High School.
Sidonia married Gilbert Cunningham on Oct. 19, 1929, in Iron Mountain and he preceded her in death in 1969. She was a former member of the American Martyr's Catholic Church and was a former Guild member.
Sidonia is survived by two sons, Gilbert (Shirley)Cunningham of Janesville, Wis. and Dayton 'Bud' (Linda) Cunningham of Mauston, Wis.; three daughters, Eunice Goodman of Mustang, Okla., Darlene Carrico of Machesney Park, Ill., Lola McGraw of Cuba City; two sons-in law, Tony Alleva of Kingsford and Ron Will of Milwaukee;17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and 12 great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Bernie Will and Kathy Alleva, three sons-in -law, Bud McGraw, Adell Carrico, and Harold Goodman, one grand daughter and two grandsons.
Visitation is scheduled for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Kingsford Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
Pallbearers will be Bill McGraw, Chuck Cunningham, Rob Cunningham, Don Nelson, Dave Brempell, and Luis Maravilla.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Kingsford Funeral Home of Kingsford with the funeral arrangements.
