Merchand, Susan Lynn
May 6, 1946 - June 8, 2001

Susan Lynn Merchand, 55, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Friday, June 8, 2001, at her home.

Funeral services for Susan will be held on Tuesday, June 12th, at 1 p.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel with The Reverend Patricia Green officiating. Interment will follow in the Chippewa Township cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Sunday, June 10th, from 7-9 p.m. and Monday, June 11th, from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan or the Pardee Cancer Treatment Fund. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Susan was born on May 6, 1946, in Riverdale, the daughter of Raymond and Nina (Zelis) Hartman. She married Michael V. Merchand on July 24, 1971. Susan’s greatest joy in her life was her grandchildren. Susan worked from 1971-1981 as an L.P.N. for the Mt. Pleasant Regional Center before she retired. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. Susan loved camping, gardening, flowers, crafts, and crocheting.

Susan is survived by her husband, Michael V. Merchand of Mt. Pleasant; her children, Kimberly (Tim) Tilmann, George (Nancy) Flaugher, Jr., James (Judy) Flaugher, all of Beal City, Cindy Merchand and David Groham of Grayling, Kelly Merchand and Mike Malmborg of Cadillac, Tammy (Larry) Carpenter of Grayling, Shelly Bohn and Bruce Little of Cadillac; 16 grandchildren, Karen, Kathy and Tony Tilmann, Kendra and Jacob Flaugher, Brandon, April and Ashley Flaugher, Jeffery and Maryann Sirrine, Mason Palmer, James and Janna Eddy, Garrett Godsey, and Micky and C.J. Malmborg; her mother Nina R. Hartman of Shepherd; her mother-in-law Karoline Merchand of St. Ignace; 4 brothers, David R. Hartman, Dennis (Candi) Hartman, all of Shepherd, Dick (Denise) Hartman of Holt, Doug Hartman (Libby Allen) of Columbia City, IN; 5 sisters, Judy (Ray) Sloan of Yukon, OK, Karen (Ted) Means of Hazel Park, Nancy (Gordon) Moeggenborg, Deb (Ron) VanLiew, and Cindy Anne Martinez, all of Shepherd.

Susan was preceded in death by her father Raymond on April 16, 2001, her grandparents, and her father-in-law Victor Merchand.

Oaks, Gary A.
July 11, 1935 - June 6, 2001

Gary A. Oaks, 65, of Westland, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at his home.

A Funeral Mass for Gary will be held on Saturday, June 9th, at 10:30 from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beal City, with Fr. John Cotter officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s cemetery.

The family will receive friends at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Those wishing to make memorial contributions may consider Hospice, mass intentions, or to the wishes of the family. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel and the church.

Gary was born on July 11, 1935, in Hastings, Michigan, the son of Lemuel and Naomi (Clagget) Oaks. He married Jane Schafer on October 24, 1959. Gary was retired from U.S.D.A. Poultry Products.

Gary is survived by his wife Janet Oaks of Westland; his daughter Julie Oaks Weir (David) of Manhattan, Kansas; his daughter-in-law Denise Oaks of Westland; 4 grandchildren, Brandon and Jeremy Weir and George Milian and Sydney Oaks; his mother, Naomi Oaks of Farwell; 4 brothers Don Oaks (Ruth) of Mt. Pleasant, Greg Oaks (Wilma) of Coleman, Jim Oaks (Sandy) of Phoenix, Arizona, Danny Oaks of Colorado; and his sister Judy Amick of Farwell.

Gary was preceded in death by his son Michael, his daughters Catherine, Patricia, and Christine, and his father Lemuel.

Murrell, Thomas Allen
February 18, 1914 - June 3, 2001

Thomas A. Murrell of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2001, at his home.

The family requests that friends join in a celebration of Tom's life with a Jazz Brunch at the Embers Restaurant, Mt. Pleasant, Sunday June 10 at 11 a.m.

Tom was born February 18, 1914, in Lebanon, Kentucky, the son of Thomas and Mamie (Miller) Murrell. He married Herta Homi in 1951. Tom received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Wisconsin in 1941. The next three years he served with the Radiation Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, assigned to the 8th Air Force in England as a civilian advisor for the development and deployment of radar. In 1946 he was awarded the Bronze Star by President Truman for his service. In 1947 he joined the faculty of the University of Illinois Department of Electrical Engineering, and was later one of the first faculty members in the new Department of Computer Science, retiring in 1979 after receiving several teaching awards.

Surviving are his wife Herta; two daughters, Edie (Bruce) Allen of Mt. Pleasant and Sylvia (Ron) Presswood of Cobden, Illinois; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan or to the Isabella County Adult Day Care Center.

West, Joseph Bernard
July 6, 1928 - January 27, 2006

Joseph Bernard West, 77, of Clare, passed away on Friday, January 27, 2006.

A Funeral Mass for Joe will be Monday, January 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Henry’s Church in Rosebush, with Fr. Raymond Moeggenberg and Lorraine McGuiness officiating. Interment will follow in St. Henry’s cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 28, from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, January 29, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel. There will be a Prayer Vigil Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Visitation will continue on Monday, January 30, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at St. Henry’s Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Joe was born July 6, 1928, in Rosebush, the son of Bernard and Tweedie (Prout) West. He graduated in the Class of 1947 from Mt. Pleasant High School. Joe married Rose Marie McGuirk on May 28, 1949, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Joe retired from Dow Chemical in 1983, after 33 years of service as a painter. He loved being with his grandchildren and attending family events. Joe enjoyed hunting with his brothers, sons, and grandchildren as well as collecting knives. He enjoyed spending time on the farm and having coffee with his many friends in Clare. During his high school days, Joe was a Golden Glove boxer.

Joe will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 56 years, Rose Marie, and his children Dennis Joseph West (fiancée Kim Wilson) of Rosebush and John Ace West (Becky) of Rosebush; 9 grandchildren, Jennifer Bolle, Marie Rawson (Steve), John West (Amber), Melissa Bunker (Brian), Lindsay West, Deana West, Cody West, Joey West and Luke West; 8 great-grandchildren, Linde Bolle, Ashley Rawson, Kyle West, Dustin Bunker, Allison Rawson, Colton West, Emily Bunker, and Hannah West; brother Mike West (Barb) of Mt. Pleasant; and sisters Veronica Gothup and Floss Ann “Tip” Phillips, both of Lake Isabella.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jack, Dick and Ace West and daughter-in-law Judi West.

Elsea, Robert Duane
January 17, 1949 - January 24, 2006

Robert Duane Elsea, 57, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

A memorial service for Robert will be held on Friday, January 27, 2006 at 4 p.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel with Sr. Andre Kravec officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday from 3 p.m. until time of service at the chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the chapel.

Robert was born on January 17, 1949 in Alma, the son on Harold and Gertrude (Sufdorf) Elsea. He was a graduate of Alma Public Schools before serving in the United States Army. Robert married Carol Hauck in June 1994. He worked for Schwann’s Food Service in North Carolina and Alma. Robert most recently worked in the sporting goods of Walmart in Mt. Pleasant. He was a member of the VFW Post in Six Lakes, Eagles of Mt. Pleasant, Alma Moose Lodge, North America Hunter’s Club and Duck’s Unlimited. Robert Enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, collecting guns, skeet shooting, mushroom hunting and anything in the out of doors.

Robert is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Joshua (Kelly) Recker of Blanchard, Mike (Trinna) Recker of Blanchard, Jennifer Ann Recker of Ithaca, Matthew Elsea of Mt. Pleasant, Bobby Elsea of Alma and Shannon Carl of Alma; two grandchildren, Austin and Bailey Recker; parents, Gertrude (Art) Hunt of Lake and Donald and Betty Hauck of Rosebush and one brother, Don (Marsha) Ackley of Lake.

Robert is preceded in death by his father; brother, Richard Elsea; sister, Linda Elsea and grandson, Cole Recker.

Davis, Tyler D. & Kyle L.
January 21, 2006 - January 21, 2006

Tyler Dell and Kyle Lewis Davis, of Ithaca, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2006, at Gratiot Medical Center in Alma.

Funeral services for Tyler and Kyle will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at 11 a.m. from Memorial Garden cemetery with Nancy Casey-Fulton officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Gratiot Area Hospice. Envelopes will be available at the Clark Funeral Chapel.

Tyler and Kyle were born January 21, 2006, in Alma, the sons of Robert Wilson and Karrie Davis.

Tyler and Kyle are survived by their mother and father; sister, Meghan Johnson; grandparents, Violet Dell and papa, James VanHorn Sr.

They are preceded in death by sister, Breann Wentz-Gray and Grandpa, Lewis Dell.

Hinkley, Harley Keith
November 8, 1920 - January 19, 2006

Harley Hinkley, age 77, of Mt. Pleasant, a wonderful, loving husband, father, “papa”, brother and friend to many passed away on Friday, January 19, 2006 at Gratiot Community Hospital.

A Funeral Mass for Harley will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. from Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Gardens cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 21, 2006 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel and on Sunday, January 22, 2006 from 1:30 p.m. until time of service at the church. A prayer service will be held on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post 3033 Honor Guard c/o Dennis White. Harley was born in Jackson, MI on November 8, 1928 to Keith and Winnifred (Jones) Hinkley. He married Brigid Kuhlman on June 20, 1953 in California, just before leaving to serve in the Korean War.
Harley enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. in 1951. His service awards include a Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct ribbon, National Defense Service ribbon, Korean Service ribbon and United Nations Service ribbon. Other awards include the Combat Action ribbon and the Korean War Service with Bronze Star. He also received the Marine Corp. Sharp Shooter Medal.
Harley graduated from Central Michigan University with degrees in Education and Education Administration. He was an educator and administrator for 34 years, primarily in the Mt. Pleasant and Chippewa Hills schools. He was most recognized for being principal of Kinney Elementary School. He was also a registered piano tuner and technician, receiving his certificate from Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.
Some of his many accomplishments include co-founding Mt. Pleasant’s Big Brothers Big Sisters program and organizing the first Headstart program. He also spearheaded the first Children’s Clothing Drive (ECHO) for local elementary-age children and Block Parent Neighborhood Watch Program. He was a member of the MEA, NEA, NRA and the Piano Technician Guild. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a lifetime member of VFW Post 3033 and current captain of the Honor Guard and a member of Marine Corp. League. He was a member of the Midstatemen’s Barbershop chorus and in 2002, he was awarded the honor of “Barbershopper of the year” for Gratiot County. Myrtle Margaret (Fobear) Graham, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at her home.

Funeral services for Myrtle will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 11 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ralph Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Gardens cemetery. Mrs. Graham was born January 9, 1921, in Saginaw, Michigan to Archie Joseph Fobear and Elsie Emma Margaret (Becker) Fobear. She married Morris James Graham on August 19, 1939, in Saginaw.

Mrs. Graham was a lifetime resident of Michigan. She and her husband worked a farm in Rosebush prior to their moving to Mt. Pleasant. Myrtle enjoyed baking and crocheting. She attended the Mt. Pleasant Community Church.

Mrs. Graham is survived by four children: a son, Gary M. (Irene) Graham of Farwell, MI; three daughters, Judy M. Graham of Brunswick, OH, Mary Lou (William H.) Sutton of Mt. Pleasant, and Betty Jo (Richard) Quigno of Mt. Pleasant; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and three siblings, James R. Fobear, Mary Jane Clayton, and Sally A. Cole.

She was preceded in death by her husband Morris in 1995; five brothers, Chester, Archie, Raymond, Harry, and William Fobear; and three sisters, Betty Rohlfs, Marjorie Fobear, and Barbara Heacox.

Wilson, George Lee
September 7, 1921 - January 14, 2006

George Lee Wilson, age 84, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Saturday January 14, 2006, at his residence.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 17th, at 11 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel. Mr. Frank Wright of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness will officiate. Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Chapel on Monday, January 16th, from 2-5 and 7–9 p.m. Memorial Donations may be made to Hospice of Mid Michigan. George Lee Wilson was born September 7, 1921, in Shepherd, MI, the son of John H. Wilson and Mary B. (Lynch) Wilson. George married Norma Mullet on September 21, 1946, in Isabella Co. George worked as a farmer and a boilermaker. He enjoyed bowling and fox hunting.
George was a member of the Boilermaker Local 169 and the Mt. Pleasant Moose Lodge.

George is survived by his wife Norma Wilson; children, Suzanne (Dick) Cassle of Lake Orion, Jim (Shelly) Wilson and Dick (Cindy) Wilson, both of Mt. Pleasant, and John (Elizabeth) Wilson of Crystal River, Florida; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren; sisters, Olive (Jeptha) Skinner of Byron, Michigan and Dorothy Dinius of Mt. Pleasant.

George was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Basil, Tom, Albert, Alfred, and Gerald Wilson; sisters, Frances Theilen and Lillian Truhlar.

Klein, Jr., Harry Michael
October 23, 1935 - January 6, 2006

Harry Michael Klein, Jr., 70, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Friday, January 6, 2006 at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

A Funeral Mass for Harry will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2006 at 11 a.m. from Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Robert Byrne officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 from 7-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church Building Fund. Harry was born on October 23, 1935 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Harry Michael and Susanna Marie (Kripa) Klein. He married Shirley Theresa Little on June 30, 1956 at St. Philomene in Beal City. Harry was employed as a plumber. He was a former member of Mt. Pleasant Moose Lodge and enjoyed socializing.

Harry is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Donald E. Klein of Mt. Pleasant, Thomas J. (Shirley) Klein of Coral Springs, FL, Jeffrey R. Klein of Margate, FL, Jayne (William) Fish of Mt. Pleasant and Leroy A. Klein of Margate, FL; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Klein of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Harry Michael Klein IV, Amanda, Kody, Bradley, Thomas and Alysha Klein, Theresa (Jesse) Ellsworth and Zachery and Sophie Fish; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Hayden; four brothers and one sister.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents and son, H. Michael Klein III.

McGuire, Joseph Dominic
March 5, 1973 - January 6, 2006

Joseph McGuire, 32, of Rosebush went to be with his Lord unexpectedly on Friday, January 6, 2006, at his home.

Funeral services for Joe will take place on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at 11 a.m. from the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Barry Flanders officiating. Interment will follow in St. Henry’s cemetery in Rosebush. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 8, from 7-9 p.m. and on Monday, January 9, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel. Visitation will also continue on Tuesday, January 10, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to an Endowment Fund for Joe’s children. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Joe was born in Mt. Pleasant on March 5, 1973, the son of Joseph and Rhonda (Cain) McGuire of Rosebush. He attended Mt. Pleasant High School, graduating in the class of 1991. Joe attended Mid Michigan Community College for welding. On December 30, 1995, Joe married the love of his life, Susan Guthrie, at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant. He was raised on a farm in Vernon Township and enjoyed farming, trucking, and operating equipment. As owner of Joe McGuire Trucking for eight years, he leased to Lum Hughston as a long haul livestock hauler. Recently he was employed by Elmer’s Crane and Dozer. Both employers considered Joe as family. He became a best friend to everyone he came in contact with.

The McGuire Family began with their first-born son ,Joseph James, followed by Michael Dominic, James Joseph, and their precious daughter Lillian Jo. Joe was a loving and dedicated family man. He was easy-going, charismatic, and always willing to lend a hand.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of ten years, Susan; sons, Joey, Michael, James and daughter Lilly Jo; his parents, Joe and Rhonda McGuire; sisters, Danielle (Tom) Estrada, Katie McGuire and fiancé Bryan Bollman; and special little sister “C” Krista McGuire; grandmother, Edith Cain; and many loving aunts, uncles, nephews, and cousins. Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents Joe and Peg McGuire, Sr. and grandfather Glen Cain.

Card, Debra Lynn
May 12, 1956 - January 6, 2006

Debra Lynn Card, 49, of Mecosta, Michigan went to be with her Lord on Friday, January 6, 2006 at home with her family by her side.

Funeral services for Debra will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at 11 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel with Pastor David Maier officiating. Interment will take place in the Selkirk cemetery near West Branch. The Family will receive friends on Monday, January 9, 2006 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 from 10 a.m. until time of service at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Alcoholics Anonymous District 16 or Wise Battered Women’s Shelter in Big Rapids. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Debra was born on May 12, 1956 in Highland Park, MI, the daughter of Frank and Corliss (VanWormer) Mueller. She attended Kirkland Community College. Debra received an honorary doctorial degree in Business and Industry from Ferris State University in May 2005. Debra married Roger Card on January 22, 1991 in Reno, Nevada. Her and her husband, Roger engaged in developing real estate property throughout Michigan. Debra was a life member of the Safari Club International and she was on the Advisory Board of Card Wildlife Education Center. Her and her husband founded Card Wildlife Educational Center at Ferris State University. They award four scholarships each year. Debra and Roger were the Grand Marshall 2000 for Ferris State University Homecoming Parade. Debra was an avid big game hunter, collecting the Grand Slam of Big Horn Sheep. She also holds the record for the largest moose ever taken in the world. She enjoyed organic gardening, cooking, entertaining and traveling around the globe. Debra was also a beautiful and talented seamstress.

Debra is survived by her husband, Roger of Mecosta; step-children, Peggy (Duane) Kyle of Dade City, FL, Karen Card & fiance’ Stan of Largo, FL and Beverly (Jay) Sloan of Dade City, FL; step-grandchildren, Amanda (Tom) Brunk of Jacksonville, NC, Nathan Kyle of Dade City, FL, Joey Chenis of Largo, FL, Abby Card of Dade City and Ryan Sloan of Dade City; mother, Corliss Mueller; brothers, Terry (Melody) Mueller of Porter, TX, Keith (Theresa) Mueller of West Branch and Dale Mueller and Beth Jennings of Mt. Pleasant; God Daughter, Isabel and nieces and nephews, Jessica (Scott), Corey (Tina), Casey (Ashley), Chris and Megan (Kyle).

Debra was preceded in death by her father; grandparents and uncle, Russ VanWormer.
