Verna Balzarini
KINGSFORD - Verna Eva Balzarini, 91, of Kingsford, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006, at Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kingsford.
She was born on Feb. 13, 1915, in Hermansville, daughter of the late Art and Louise (Gendron) Mitchell, but spent most of her life in Iron Mountain. She married Charles Balzarini on Aug. 9, 1932, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1987.
Verna was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and she loved to crochet, making hundreds of afghans and scrubbies for her family and friends. She was also noted for her wonderful cooking, especially her outstanding pasties.
Verna also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and playing cards. She was a great wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. Verna was employed at Weber's Drug Store and Quality Hardware for many years.
She is survived by a son, Charles (Marie) Balzarini of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; a daughter Jackie (Carl) Lemin of Kingsford; eight grandchildren, Cristina Balzarini, Debby (John) Bray who were a great support to Verna, Laura (Tim) Krueger, Jon (Mickey) Lemin, Don (Jennifer) Lemin, Tom (Yvonne) Lemin, Marie Lemin and Nicole (John) McVicker; 16 great-grandchildren; a very special brother and friend, Art Mitchell; a sister-in-law and church partner Olympia Balzarini; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Balzarini, Agnes Mitchell, Joan Mitchell, and Mary Pucci; and many nieces and nephews, but two very close and extremely helpful nephews and their wives Bob (Isabel) Paoletti and Don (Carol) Paoletti.
Verna was preceded in death by three brothers, Duane, Earl, and Jack Mitchell; two sisters, Genevieve Deneen and Maxine Yatchek; two sisters-in-law, Rita Mitchell, and LaVerne Balzarini; and three brothers-in-law, Joe, Angelo, and Frank Balzarini
Visitation will be on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Harold Trumble
IRON MOUNTAIN - Harold C. Trumble, 82, of 1100 W. Hughitt St., Iron Mountain, died Friday, March 10, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born on Nov. 13, 1923, in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., the son of the late Charles and Ruth (Ellison) Trumble.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Seabee in the Pacific Theater.
He worked as a plumber and was a charter member of Union Local 506.
Harold was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Legion Uren-Cooper-Johnson Post 50. He volunteered to work in the Appalachian Mountains with the Appalachian Service Project. He enjoyed spending time at his cottage and fishing, gardening, and exercising.
He married Wanda Harding on March 12, 1946, at the First United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda; four daughters, Pamela (Bernard) Marcoullier of Wausau, Wis., Siri (Bob Sternhagen) Trumble of Kingsford, Wanda (Teck) Khor of Iron Mountain, and Tina (Jeff) Dabb of Iron Mountain; one brother, Randy (Jan) Trumble of Kingsford; two sisters, Jidge (Joe) Van Remoortere of Kingsford, and Marilyn (Duane) Fayas of Iron Mountain; 10 grandchildren, Christine (Tim) Edwards, Tom Marcoullier, Gary Marcoullier, Monica (Jim) Chartier, Ryan Shaw, Dalbert Shaw, Emilia (Chris Ritzenhein) Khor, Amanda Khor, Todd Edwards and McKenna Dabb; six great-grandchildren, Caleb and Amber Edwards, James, Tyler, Jacob, and baby Chartier (who is on the way).
He was preceded in death by a son, Richard and a sister, Alice Fornetti.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. The American Legion Uren-Cooper-Johnson Post 50 will conduct military services at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held immediately following. Rev. David Snyder will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Gary Hansen
MILWAUKEE - Gary R. Hansen, 69, of Milwaukee, passed away on March 9, 2006.
He was born in Iron Mountain, son of the late Russell and Lucille (Gribbon) Hansen. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
Gary is survived by three children, Susan C. Hansen, James Kelly Hansen, and Brian A. (Amie) Hansen; grandfather to Nicholas, Amanda, Ariana, Isabella and Jake Hansen; brother of Neil (Pat) Hansen, Reid (Sharon) Hansen and Pam (Pete) Goralski. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and former wife, Kathleen Hansen.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Lynn and a son, Michael Robert Hansen.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral home in Iron Mountain.
A memorial service will follow at 7:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate.
Burial will be in Quinnesec cemetery.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Raymond Byers
Raymond F. Byers, Sr. 62, of Niagara, died Fri. March 3, 2006 at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain, MI. He was born on March 23, 1943 in Marquette, MI the son of the late James and Dorothy (Rogers) Byers.
Mr. Byers served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War
Ray was a truck driver for many years for Bousley Trucking and Smeester Trucking. He also worked on the loading dock for U.P. Special Delivery. Ray enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He married Angeline Katherine Wozniak in Armstrong Creek. She preceded him in death on June 24, 1977.
Ray is survived by his children Raymond (fiancee Sally Nault) Byers, Jr. of Niagara and Carole (Kenneth) Nichols of Fence, one stepdaughter Liza (Fiancee Donnie Willis) of Norway, and ten grandchildren Angel Lee Grimmer, Timothy and Joseph Nichols, Paul and Derek Swiercz, Cody and Dillon Wynn, and Tess, Teagen, and Chandler Wills and a special friend Jim "Big Foot" Washbish
He was preceded in death by one brother Lester Byers.
Visitation will be Mon. from 3-4pm at Tondin-Ross and Freeman Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 4pm at the funeral home. Reverend Robert Mueller will officiate. Burial will be in the Pine Hill cemetery in Armstrong Creek.
The Tondin-Ross and Freeman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Zelda Quandt
KINGSFORD - Zelda C. Quandt, 88, of Kingsford, died Friday, March 3, 2006, at her home.
She was born May 25, 1917, in Yadkinville, N. C., daughter of the late Edward O. and Bessie (Hobson) Caudle. She graduated from Boonville North Carolina High School and City Memorial Hospital Nursing School in Winston-Salem, N.C. She served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II.
On Aug. 24, 1945, she married Albert W. Quandt in Salerno, Italy. She resided in the Copper Country for 30 years and moved to Dickinson County in 1981. She was active in the Portage Lake United Church in Houghton, and a member of Union Grove Baptist Church of Yadkinville, N.C.
Mrs. Quandt is survived by her husband, Albert; a son, Stephen (Patricia) Quandt of Spread Eagle, Wis.; a daughter, Sara (Thomas Arcury) Quandt of Winston-Salem; a sister, Ruth (John) Vestal of Yadkinville; four grandchildren, David Quandt, Carol Quandt, Justin Arcury, and Alice Arcury-Quandt; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Naomi Caudle, and a brother, Arvil Caudle.
There will be no visitation. Services will be private.
Memorials may be sent to the Memorial Fund of Union Grove Baptist Church, 2401 Nebo Road, Yadkinville, N.C., 27055.
The Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home is serving the family.

Kenneth Cheney
FELCH - Kenneth L. Cheney, 77, of Felch, died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 2, 2006, at Marquette General Hospital.
He was born on July 20, 1928, in Kingsford, the son of the late James and Theora (Duby) Cheney.
Ken was a lifelong resident of this area and a 1947 graduate of Kingsford High School.
He married the former Carol White on Oct. 6, 1951, at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford.
He served in the Korean War with the United States Army. Ken retired from the Niagara of Wisconsin/Pentair Paper Mill after more than 42 years.
He was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching and feeding the birds and spending time at his camp in Sagola. He took great pride in his yard until his stroke in 1997.
He was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather and his life was centered on his family. Throughout their married life, he and his wife were caregivers and helped many relatives. friends, and neighbors.
Ken is survived by his wife, Carol; two sons, Alan (Wendy) Cheney of Vulcan and Steven (Debra) Cheney of Kingsford; two daughters, Linda (Robert) Langin of Norway and Parma (Patrick) Langin of Vulcan; nine grandchildren, Brenda and Shelly Cheney, Kenny Cheney, Tammi, Brian and Billy Langin, Sara (Jason) Maitland, David Langin and Michael Langin; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and David Cheney, a sister, Dorothy Szymanski and a granddaughter, Karen Cheney.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to11 a.m. on Monday at the Kingsford Funeral Home
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:30 a.m. at American Martyrs Church. Father Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.
His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Donald McDonald
SAGOLA - Donald J. McDonald, 75, of Sagola, passed away Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
Don was born in Felch on July 20, 1930. He was the son of the late Joseph and Emma (Herzog) McDonald and has been a lifelong resident of Dickinson County.
He worked for many years in this area in construction, logging and mining. Don enjoyed fishing, gardening and being outdoors. He was an avid reader and enjoyed collecting and restoring old chainsaws. He loved spending time with family and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette (Bozile), whom he married in Channing in 1952; three sons, Michael McDonald of Milwaukee, Lawrence (Cheryl) McDonald of Apopka, Fla. and Terry (Dawn) McDonald of Sagola; three daughters, Karen (Patrick) Corcoran of Indiana, Laurie (Daniel) Dunbar of Flint, lower Michigan and Patti Ann (Tom) Roell of Randville; 16 grandchildren, Stephanie, Michael, Randy, Cory, Jamie, Carrie, Kim, Amanda, Christopher, John, Jacob, Valerie, Mark, Paul, Amy and Jacob; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, James (Pearl) McDonald of Sagola and two sisters, Florence (Don) Hamby of Randville and Judy Frank of Henderson, Nev.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his son, Gerald; a brother, Ronald McDonald and a sister Sadie 'Patsy' Warlin.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday at St. Rose Church in Channing.
A memorial Mass will follow at 2 p.m. at the church. Fr. Peter Fosu will officiate.
Burial will be in the Felch cemetery.

Geraldine Gill
BREITUNG TOWNSHIP - Geraldine I. Gill, 63, of Breitung Township, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at her home with the love and support of her family.
She struggled with lung cancer for a year, but her positive attitude and faith helped provide her with quality of life and made her an inspiration to those around her.
Geraldine was born on July 24, 1942, daughter of the late Ervin and Jeanette (Rumpf) Witt. She graduated Kingsford High School, class of 1960.
She married Gordon Gill in Appleton, Wis., in June 1984.
Geraldine lived in Appleton, and Sarasota, Fla., returning to Kingsford in 2003. Her artistic and creative talents brought her contentment and joy, and she was well-known in the area for her life-like portraits of pets for their owners.
Geraldine was a member of the American Martyrs Catholic Church and the Red Hat Society.
She is survived by her husband and dedicated caregiver, Gordon Gill of Iron Mountain; a son, Rick Richter of Oshkosh, Wis.; a stepdaughter and special caregiver, Gretchen Gill of Milwaukee; grandsons, Jesse (Jalena), and Jeromy Rueger; great-grandson, Drake of Appleton; twin brother and caregiver, Thomas (Sherry) Witt of Riverside, Calif.; sister and caregiver, Patricia Hyland of Kingsford; sister in-law, Bonnie Witt of Denver; nieces, Keri Hyland (Randy Piatti) of Kingsford, Teri (Robert) Wallace of San Bernadino, Calif., Andrea Witt and nephew Robert (Karen) Witt of Denver, ; several great-nieces and great-nephews; aunts, Anita (Zyg) Bonkowski of Iron Mountain, and Edith Rumpf of Kingsford; several cousins; special friend, Elaine (Roy) Johnson and her faithful cat, Wumpy.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother in-law, James Hyland Sr., and nephew, James Hyland Jr.
The family has requested that flowers be omitted.
Memorials may be made to Dickinson County Cancer Loan Closet, 1401 1/2 S. Carpenter Ave., Iron Mountain., Michigan, 49801, or the Springlake Humane Society, W8459 Shelter Dr., Iron Mountain, Michigan, 49801
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford.
The funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
Pallbearers will be Eugene Peterson, Thomas Hagberg, Shane Skog, and Jeromy Rueger.
Burial will be in Quinnesec cemetery.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.
