Kristy Savola
Kristy Anna Savola, 19, of 415 Vulcan St. Iron Mountain, died Fri. April 28, 2006 at her home, with her fiancee Benjamin Balkum. She was born on June 2, 1986 in Munising.
Kristy had attended Iron Mountain High School. She had a beautiful singing voice and sang in the school's choir. Kristy worked at the Dollar Store, the North Elementary Daycare, and was a transporter for Dickinson County Human Services.
Kristy loved being a mom and is survived by her infant son, Kristian Balkum.
She is also survived by her mother and stepfather Sara and Elliott Pearce of Aurora, her father and stepmother Geoffrey and Nicole Savola of Norway, her sisters Tia Savola and Samantha Savola, both of Iron Mountain, her brother, Jeffrey Savola of Munising, her maternal grandparents Shirley and Emil Bruce of Munising, her paternal grandparents Anna Karen Lindon of Indianapolis and Jim and Wilma Savola of Trenary, a niece Hailey Savola and a nephew Bryce Curran, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather Ace Lindon and a nephew Logan Curran.
Visitation will be tonight from 3-6pm at Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 6pm tonight at the funeral home. Rev. Keith Wall will officiate. Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the First National Bank of Iron Mountain-Kinsford.
The Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Benjamin Balkum
IRON MOUNTAIN - Benjamin J. Balkum, 23, of 415 Vulcan St., Iron Mountain, died Friday, April 28, 2006, with his fiance, Kristy Savala at their home.
He was born April 27, 1983, in Iron Mountain. Ben was a 2001 graduate of Norway High School.
He was active in hockey, football, track and wrestling. Ben enjoyed music and being with his friends. He loved spending time with his fiance, Kristy and his two children.
Ben is survived by his son, Kristian and daughter, Isabella. He is also survived by his father and mother, Ray and Sue Balkum of Iron Mountain; his grandparents, Phyllis Balkum of Norway, Pat Davis and Jim and Pat Johnson of Newberry; his brothers, Bill (Cassie) Balkum of Kingsford and Ryan Balkum of Iron Mountain; and his sisters, Nicole and Megan Balkum of Iron Mountain.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Tammy Balkum, his paternal grandfather, Ben Balkum; and maternal grandfather, Clarence Freeman
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Wallis will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
Contributions can be made in Ben's memory to the First National Bank of Iron Mountain-Kingsford.

Jack "Swede" Anderson
IRON MOUNTAIN - Jack "Swede" Anderson, 84, of 905 West A St. in Iron Mountain, died Sunday Oct. 29, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born on Aug. 27, 1922, in Iron Mountain and was the son of the late Erick and Hulda (Younggren) Anderson. Jack graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1941 and attended the University of Wisconsin. He was a resident of Milwaukee and Punta Gorda, Fla. for many years and had returned to this area in April 2006. Jack served during World War II with the United States Army. He worked for Milwaukee Cheese for 10 years and for many years as a barber in Wauwatosa.
He was a member of the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50, the Norway Masonic Lodge and attended First Covenant Church. Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and going to the casino.
He is survived by his son, Scott Anderson of Milwaukee; his fiance, Dolores Bratton of Iron Mountain; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce in 1982 and his wife, Mary in 2005. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Elmer, Bertil, Windsor, Wallace and Roy and sisters, Ethel Dieckman, Ruth Broden, Evelyn Simkovski and Ardis Rahoi
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Entombment will take place at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Milwaukee.
It is the families wish that flowers be omitted.

Patricia E. Bednarz
IRON MOUNTAIN - Patricia E. Bednarz, 72, of 514 Broadway St. in Iron Mountain, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2006 at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.
Patt was born Jan. 15, 1934, in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late Peter and Aila (Maki) Feira. She graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1951 and was a lifelong resident of the area.
Patt was a Dickinson County Courthouse employee in the Register of Deeds Office and office administrator for the Probate/Juvenile Court for 35 years, retiring in 1996. The late Russell Bednarz was her former husband. Patt was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and former member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed hostessing bus trips to the casino, on which she made numerous longlasting friendships. Patt loved spending time with her many friends and her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved to entertain and all who knew her felt her sincere welcome in her home.
She is survived by five children, Susan (Daniel) Tappy of Iron Mountain, David (Susan) Bednarz of Green Bay, Wis., Ken (Pam) Bednarz of Iron Mountain, Robert (Tina) Bednarz of Ludington, lower Michigan and Kristine (Michael) Blanchard of Dallas, Ore.; a brother, Peter (Marlene) Feira of Green Bay; a sister-in-law, Alice Feira of Iron Mountain; 16 grandchildren, Laura Tappy, Matthew (Beth) Tappy, Megan and Shelby Bednarz, Nathan and Matthew Kuhns, Jaymie (Jeremy Reader), Ken and Ian (Kristin Johnson) Bednarz, Harmony and Amber O'Brien, Elisha, Dana and Robyn Bednarz and Madison and Isabella Blanchard; seven great-grandchildren, Alissa Tappy, Lucas Tappy, Tres and Ethan Bednarz, Wyatt Provencher, Hannah Payette and Michael Manning; and many cousins and friends.
Patt was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Feira; a daughter-in-law, DeAnn (Hart) Bednarz; and a special uncle, Clem Feira along with numerous other aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.

Joyce Gagnon
KINGSFORD - Joyce Gagnon, 80, of Kingford, died on Oct. 26, 2006, at Hyland Nursing Home, where she was a resident for the last three years.
She was born on Nov. 26, 1925, to Rocke and Rita (Nault) Provencher, Joyce was raised in East Kingsford and graduated from Kingsford High School, the Class of 1943. After graduation, she trained as a registered nurse in Chicago and interned in Tacoma, Washington, where she nursed terminally ill tuberculosis patients.
On May 8th, 1948, she married John Gagnon.
Joyce was a dedicated homemaker and mother of ten children. She lovingly raised her family, yet remained an avid artist, singer, and nature lover. She and her husband of 58 years enjoyed a rich, full, active life. She enjoyed many activities including going to church, painting, fishing, boating, hunting, collecting ornamental rocks, gardening and watching sunsets. In her retirement years, she loved to keep learning with oil painting classes, water aerobic classes, and other pursuits.
Many happy memories were made at the family camp, on the dance floor, and in the family living room where she played the piano by ear. She traveled whenever she could. She made every holiday brighter, opening her home to large family gatherings. She encouraged all of her children to appreciate life, learn how to play an instrument, and keep faith in God.
Twice she endured long stays in a sanitarium to overcome tuberculosis contracted in her nursing days. Because of her life experiences and kind nature, she always put others first and was greatly admired for her generous spirit, graciousness and devout faith. A longtime member of Queen of Peace Church, she was involved in the Daughter of Isabella, the Ladies' Guild, and especially treasured her time with her friends in the church choir.
Music had been a great comfort to her, even in her last years of declining health. She will always be remembered for her ready smile, even in her last weeks of life. She was everyone's angel - always there for whoever needed her.
She leaves her husband and soul mate, John; daughters, Rebecca (Bill) Robert, Gretchen (Art) Spera, Wendy (Keith) Zambon, Jeanne (Paul) Castor, sons, Francis Gagnon, Ted (Holly) Gagnon, Perry (Michaela) Gagnon, Mark Gagnon, and John (Pam) Gagnon; sister, Germaine (Dr. Francis) Purcell; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Schaut and Mary Provencher, and brother-in-law, Richard Gagnon.
She leaves her grandchildren, Kurt (Melissa) LaCourt, Kristy (John) Kelly, Kimberly Gagnon, Shawn Gagnon, Devon (Lisa) Gagnon, Nicole (Bryan) Komoroski, Raquel Gagnon, Kelsey (Aaron) Fleming, Dane Gagnon, Heather Bauer, Gabriel Spera, Caitlin Spera, Alexis Zambon, Lukas Zambon, Jeremy Perdue, Jason Perdue and Emily Perdue, 10 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her infant son, Rocke, her granddaughter, Camille Zambon, sisters Lois Johnson, Lorraine Kreski, and brother, Donald Provencher.
Visitation will be held from to on Monday from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.
A time of remembrance will be held on Monday at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home.
Private services will be held at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford. Sister Marla Clercx will officiate. Burial will in the Quinnesec cemetery.

Dawn M. Dumke
ISHPEMING - Dawn Marie Dumke, 34, of Ishpeming, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, at her home.
She was born on Oct. 17, 1972, in Norway. Dawn graduated from Norway High School in 1990.
She loved spending time with her children, Mark and Natasha, and with her nephews and nieces. She also enjoyed drawing, writing poetry, cross stitching, craftwork, photography, fishing, and camping.
She is survived by her children, Mark and Natasha Dumke; her parents, Dixie and Dan Peterson of Hardwood; her father, Holly G. Bonikowske of Vulcan; three sisters, Shari (John) Bozile of Quinnesec, Mindi (Les) Lorenzoni of Norway, and Tammy (Dave Carlson) Blomquist of Kingsford; her grandmother, Virginia Peterson of Kingsford; stepbrother, Kenny (Laura) Peterson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; stepsister, Debbie (Jim) Gerry of Hurley, Wis.; nieces and nephews, Zack and Devin Bozile, Laney and Isaac Lorenzoni, and Brandi Schwittay; a special friend, Terry; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Oien; and her grandparents, Allen and Charlotte Blackhall, Ray and Geraldine Bonikowske, and Kenneth Peterson.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home. Rev. Carl Hammer will officiate.
Burial will be in the Norway Township cemetery.

Evert E. Peterson
KINGSFORD - Evert E. Peterson, 94, of 144 Maple St. in Kingsford, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2006, at Florence Villa Nursing Home in Florence, Wis.
He was born March 17, 1912, in Aurora, Wis., son of the late Charles and Selma (Augustin) Peterson. Evert was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was awarded a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and "V" device.
He married Lucille VannAtter on Sept. 19, 1943, in North Carolina. She preceded him in death on Sept. 7, 1986.
Evert worked as a nursing assistant at the V.A. Hospital for 26 years until retiring in 1975. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Evert enjoyed camping, hunting, dancing and farming. He loved artwork and was an accomplished artist and painter. Evert was very handy with tools and could tackle any job or project successfully.
He is survived by his special friend and companion, Gladys Gassett of Florence, and her son, Robert "Bud" (Norma) Gassett of Chester, S.C. and several nieces and nephews.
Evert was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer, Ernest and Enar, and three sisters, Ethel, Evelyn and Judith.
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford.
Funeral services will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the church. Rev. Chad Ott will officiate.
Burial will be in Homestead-Aurora cemetery in Aurora.

George R. Voelker
IRON MOUNTAIN - George R. Voelker, 91, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed on to eternal life on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006.
George was born on June 28, 1915, in Alpha, to the late George and Elizabeth (Minnick) Voelker. George served in the United States Coast Guard and was discharged in November 1945.
He married his wife, Emma, on Aug. 23, 1943, in Milwaukee. George and Emma resided a short time in Milwaukee and California before moving back to Iron Mountain. He is a retired postal worker who loved gardening, camping, traveling, whittling, painting, spending time with his family and in his shop, and playing cribbage with his wife.
George is survived by his wife, Emma; his daughter and son and their spouses, Darla (Ed) Ashenbrenner of Two Rivers, Wis. and Bruce (Kristen) Voelker of Ann Arbor, lower Michigan; six grandchildren and their spouses, Travis (Christina) Ashenbrenner, Bryan (Amanda) Ashenbrenner, Tari (Christopher) Otradovec, Adrienne Voelker, Kyle (Julie) Voelker, and Morgan (Adam) Jeffrey; great-grandchildren, Elle, Maeve, Connor, Kevin and Jacob. He is further survived by three brothers and their spouses, Wayne (Corinne) Voelker of Kingsford, Harold of Pembine, Wis. and Herbert (Penny) of St. Petersburg, Fla. and sister-in-laws, Vivian Voelker of Alpha and Gloria Voelker of Port Richey, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William and Glen; a sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Walter Krajewski and a sister-in-law, Bertina Voelker.
Friends may call at Trinity United Methodist Church, 808 Carpenter Ave. in Iron Mountain, on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.
The service will be held at the church at 12 noon with Pastor Debbie Thomas officiating.
Burial will be in the Iron Mountain cemetery Park.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home with the arrangements.
