Slack, Arza "Bud" Ray
July 11, 1922 - January 4, 2006

Arza “Bud” Ray Slack, 83, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at his home.

Funeral Services for Bud will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2006 at 11 a.m. from Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Samuel Reith officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Gardens cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 6, 2006 from 2-8 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel and on Saturday, January 7, 2006 from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Memorial contributions will be made to Zion Lutheran Church – Building Fund or Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel or the church.

Bud was born on July 11, 1922 in New Matamoras, Ohio the son of Elmer and Nellie (McPeek) Slack. He married Alta Treichel on December 20, 1941 in Saginaw. Bud served in the United States Army during World War II. He received several medals including the Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Bud was employed by Osceola Pipe Line, Western Crude Oil and as a land man in the oil industry before retiring on December 20, 1985. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Borley-Hanel VFW Post and the Mt. Pleasant Country Club. Bud enjoyed golf, playing cards and the guitar and music.

Bud is survived by his wife, Alta; children, John (Judy) Slack of Mt. Pleasant and daughter-in-law, Marilyn (James) Slack-Norman; grandchildren, Jennifer Parker, Julie Giovanelli, Janelle Taylor, Daniel Slack II, Andrea Slack & Erica Slack; great-grandchildren, Daniel Slack III, Alexander Giovanelli, Samuel Giovanelli and Taylor James Parker; brothers, Robert (Nancy) Slack of Fostoria, MI and Roger (Martha) Slack of Sheridan, MI and sisters, Maxine (Emery) Caverly of Hillsdale, Naomi (Jerry) Turner of Sheridan and Marilyn (Pat) Shields of Lansing.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents; son, Daniel Ray Slack in December, 1987 and step-mother.

Sexton, Laurence R.
September 2, 1944 - December 29, 2005

Laurence R. Sexton, 61, of Weidman passed away on Thursday, December 29, 2005 at his home.

Funeral services for Laurence will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2005 at 11 a.m. from First Church of the Nazarene with Rev John Obrecht and Rev. Ralph Fischer officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 30, 2005 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel and on Saturday, December 31, 2005 from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan or American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel or the church.

Laurence was born on September 2, 1944, in Detroit the son of Kermit and Bessie (Roberts) Sexton Sr. He graduated from high school and served in the United Stated Army from 1963 until 1986. Laurence married Lisa Tong on August 10, 2002 in Weidman. He was self employed as a mechanic. Laurence was a member of Borley-Hanel Post VFW and the First Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking, fishing and watching the game show network.

Laurence is survived by his wife, Lisa; children, Laurence Sexton Jr. of Burlington, Vermont, Lisa (David) Burke of Lincoln, NE and Leslie Sexton – Neal of Monroe; step-children, Joy (Dennis) Edwards, Amanda McIntosh and Rickie (Elizabeth) Russell, all of Mt. Pleasant; twelve grandchildren; one brother, Kermit (Johanna) Sexton Jr. of Blanchard and sisters, Margaret (Orvis) Hymer of Blanchard, Colene (Hal) Stefins of Richmond, WA, Lucille (Doug) Hain of Rothbury, MI, Josephine (James) Holbrook of Romulus and Elaine (Leon) Seifer of Rosebush.

Laurence was preceded in death by his parents.

Mault, George William
November 11, 1942 - December 25, 2005

George William Mault, 63, of St. Louis, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2005, at his home.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Smith, M.D., B.R.
February 8, 1911 - December 24, 2005

Birna Richie (B.R.) Smith, M.D., 94, formerly of Lewisburg, OH, died on December 24, 2005, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, at his son’s home.

The son of Dr. B.R. Smith, Sr., and Laura Askin, Dr. Smith grew up in Connorsville, Indiana. He graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine and married Mary Elizabeth Mills. They moved to Lewisburg, Ohio, where he practiced family medicine for 40 years.

Dr. Smith was a veteran of World Warr II, serving as a flight surgeon in the United States Army Air Corps form 1942 to 1945. He achieved the rank of captain.

Dr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mary Elizabeth; his sister, Charlotte Wainwright; his brother, Charles; and his daughter Judith Hetherington. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, B.R. and Judy Smith, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Sol and Deborah Smith of Dayton, Ohio, and Kevin and Carol Smith, of Valencia, California; his son-in-law, Martin Hetherington, of East Lansing, Michigan; grandchildren Lisa DuBeau, Marty Hetherington, Jr., Jennifer Mesler, Christopher Smith, Joshua Hetherington, Emily Smith, Hillary Smith and Lia Hetherington; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Theisen, Mary Lou
June 26, 1936 - December 23, 2005

Mary Lou Theisen, age 69, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Friday, December 23, 2005 at her daughter’s home.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2005, at 11a.m. from Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary cemetery. Friends may call on Monday, December 26, from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel. A prayer services will be held on December 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel. There will be visitation at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 27, from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial Donations may be made to the Hospice of Central Michigan, Pardee Cancer Treatment, or the Sacred Heart Academy Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral Chapel.

Mary Lou was born June 26, 1936, in Mt. Pleasant, MI.\, the daughter of Peter and Loretta (Bierschbach) Lorenz. She graduated from Beal City High School in the Class of 1954. Mary Lou married Robert J. Theisen on January 28, 1956, in Beal City. He preceded her in death on June 4, 1993. She worked for Central Michigan University in the Registrar’s Office for 15 years. Mary Lou also provided in-home child care for many years as well as did book-keeping for Olson Tire. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Mary Lou enjoyed knitting, crocheting, games, cards, reading, gardening and spending time at her cottage at Houghton Lake.

Mary Lou is survived by her children, Nannette (Gary) Titus of Bark River, MI; Bernard (Marta) Theisen of Grosse Pointe Park, MI; Andrew (Julie) Theisen of Mt. Pleasant; Suzanne (Mark) Stansberry of Mt. Pleasant and Vicki (Matthew) Begres of Mt. Pleasant; 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild; brothers, Clarence Lorenz of Weidman; Bill (Eva) Lorenz and Ron (Therese) Lorenz both of Mt. Pleasant; sister, Vera Straus of Weidman and special friend, Harold Cozart of Mt. Pleasant.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert J. Theisen; brothers, LaVern and Jack Lorenz; sister, Rosemarie Simmer.

Petersen, Winifred Doris
February 12, 1917 - December 19, 2005

Winifred Doris Petersen, 88, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on December 19, 2005 at Tendercare Nursing Facility.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Winifred was born on February 12, 1917 in Sarnia, Cananda, the daughter of Bruce and Hazel Crane. She married Joseph Petersen. He preceded her in death. Winifred was a member of the Weidman United Methodist Church.

Winifred is survived by her children, Robert (Judy) Petersen of Mt. Pleasant and Deborah Sauber-Ellis of New York; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one sister, Betty (Ralph) Bush.

Winifred was preceded in death by her husband.

Prine, Dorothy E.
March 14, 1914 - December 13, 2005

Dorothy E. Prine, 91 of Mt. Pleasant passed away on December 13, 2005 at Maplewood Assisted Living. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Swan, Dorothy Eloise
April 8, 1925 - December 13, 2005

Dorothy Eloise Swan, 80, of Weidman passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

Funeral Services for Dorothy will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2005 at 2 p.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Two Rivers cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 16, 2005 from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Dorothy was born on April 8, 1925 in Shelby, MI the daughter of Basil Byron and Ivah (Parks) Rogers. She married Fred Swan on May 13, 1941 in Mt. Pleasant. Dorothy was the manager of the family business.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Fred; children, Leonard (Carol) Swan, Joan (Allen) Davis and Lloyd (Susan) Swan; eight grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and one brother.

Dorothy was preceded in death by four siblings.

Saltee, Nancy Sue
August 7, 1951 - December 7, 2005

Nancy Sue Saltee, 54, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at Ingham Medical Center.

Funeral services for Nancy will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at 3 p.m. from Central Assembly of God with Rev. Edward Jarvis officiating. Interment will follow in the Flox cemetery in Flox, Indiana. The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 10, 2005 from 1–3 p.m. at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the church and Clark Funeral Chapel.

Nancy was born on August 7, 1951 in Elwood, IN, the daughter of Clyde and Ina Jane (Shipley) Ingram. She married Roger Saltee on June 25, 1976 in Hutchinson, Kansas. Nancy was a minister for 30 years. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Roger; brother, Gerald (Mary) Ingram of Elwood, IN and sisters, Martha (John) Burke Elwood, IN and Linda Bennett of Kentucky.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Ina Mae Ferguson.

Lemorie, Shirley Jean
November 1, 1957 - December 7, 2005

Shirley Jean Lemorie, 48, of Shepherd passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

Funeral Services for Shirley will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at 12 noon from Clark Funeral Chapel with Mark Christian officiating. Interment will follow in the Chippewa Twp. cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 9, 2005 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the chapel. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of Christ. Envelopes will be available at the funeral Chapel.

Shirley was born on November 1, 1957 in Alma, the daughter of Donald and Phyllis (Blodgett) Doyle. She graduated from Shepherd High School in 1975 and received a degree in Business Administration from Central Michigan University. Shirley married Robert Lemorie on May 31, 1980 in Shepherd at the Westlawn Church of Christ. She was employed by Central Michigan University for 17 ˝ years as a Secretary for the Business Law Department before working at the Mid Michigan Correctional Facility as a vocational trade instructor for 10 years. Shirley was a member of the First Church of Christ and a Devoted “Mom”. She enjoyed reading, crocheting quilts, golfing, spending time with her family and fishing.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Jennifer and Katy Lemorie of Shepherd; mother, Phyllis Doyle of Shepherd; Mother and father-in-law, Eugene J. (Frances) Lemorie of Shepherd; brothers, Edward (Tracy) Doyle and Patrick (Terry) Doyle of Shepherd and sisters, Nancy Woodgate of Midland, Ruth (Tom) Moeggenberg of Mt. Pleasant, Helen (Pat) Zyonce of Mt. Pleasant, Lois Doyle of Shepherd and Jeanne (Tom) Bolton of Howell.

Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Donald Doyle in 1994 and nephew, Nicholas Doyle in 1997.

Stephens, Steve Stanley
December 3, 1955 - December 3, 2005

Steve Stanley Stephens, 50, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2005, at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

A memorial service for Steve will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at 11 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ron Vredeveld officiating.

Steve was born on December 3, 1955 in Kalith Falls, Oregon, the son of Harry and Joan (Everson) Stephens. He attended Mid Michigan Industries for many years.

Johnson, Frank Donald
May 29, 1925 - November 29, 2005

Frank Donald Johnson, 80, of Mt. Pleasant, a loving husband, father and retired local physician, passed away peacefully November 29 at home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 3 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, with the Reverend John Boley officiating. Visitation will take place Friday, December 2, 2005 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Chapel and one hour before the service at the Church. Memorials are suggested to the Johnson Scholarship Fund at Central Michigan Community Hospital. Envelopes are available at Clark Funeral Chapel or by calling (989) 772-6858.

Dr. Johnson was born in Leroy Township, Osceola County on May 29, 1925, the son of John and Ruby (Peterson) Johnson. He married Virjean Brewer in 1951. Frank was the valedictorian of his class at Marion High School. Following graduation, he was immediately drafted into the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He was involved in the infamous Battle of the Bulge. After discharge from the Army, he received a Bachelors degree from Central Michigan University and was accepted into the University of Michigan Medical School, receiving his medical degree in family practice. Dr. Johnson performed his internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Flint and opened his first general practice in Clio, where he practiced for three years before joining the active staff of Central Michigan Community Hospital in 1958.

In 1968, Dr. Johnson returned to U of M and received a masters degree in ophthalmology, returning to Mt. Pleasant in 1970 to open his specialty practice. He served the central Michigan community until 1994, when he retired from active practice and was awarded honorary staff privileges at CMCH.

Over his years at CMCH, Dr. Johnson served as Chief of the Medical Staff and Chairman of the Isabella-Clare County Medical Society. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the American Society of Contemporary Ophthalmology and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Michigan State Medical Society. Dr. Johnson was dedicated to continuing education in the medical field and served for many years as the Chairman of the Continuing Education Committee at CMCH, even after his retirement. Because of this commitment, the education conference center at the hospital was named in his honor.

Utterback, Mildred L.
May 8, 1920 - November 28, 2005

Mildred L. Utterback, 85, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Monday, November 28, 2005 at Isabella Medical Care Facility.

Funeral services for Mildred will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Eldred officiating. Interment will follow in the Riverside cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 from 4-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association or the Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Mildred was born on May 8, 1920, the daughter of Derward Cecil and Lily Ora (Beard) Breedlove. She married Kenneth “Red” Utterback of September 30, 1940.

Mildred is survived by her husband, Red; children, Lynda (William) Prior of Grand Rapids and Brenda (Thomas) Goosman of Gaylord; grandchildren, Clyde (April) Sheets, Rebecca (Guy) Hursh, Randy (Theresa) Sheets, Christopher (Belinda) Goosman and Jamie (Lisa) Goosman; eleven great-grandchildren and brother, Randal W. Breedlove of Midland.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and two grandchildren.
