Walter F. Swiderski
IRON MOUNTAIN - Walter F. Swiderski, 76, of 414 East D St., Iron Mountain, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at his home.
He was born Nov. 4, 1929, in Chicago, and was the son of the late Walter and Violet (Miller) Swiderski. Walter served during the Korean War in the United States Marine Corp. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant E-5 from the U.S. Army in 1967.
He worked for the U.S. Post Office and after his retirement worked for Reath's Nursery in Vulcan for several years. He was a member of American Martyrs Church, The Knights of Columbus 3rd degree, The Carpenter-Clash-Johnson American Legion Post 50 of Iron Mountain, and was a life member of the Marine Corp. League where he served as their chaplain. Walter loved flowers, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren. He took great pride in his yard.
Walter is survived by his daughters, Rosanne (Jim Zeeb) Brady of Crystal Falls and Susanne (Shane) Downs of Kingsford; two sisters, Violet Trela and Patsy Correa of Las Vegas and three grandchildren, Jennifer and Heather Brady and Jennifer Marshall.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert Brady and a sister, Leona Walters.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.
The Marine Corp. League will conduct memorial services at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Fr. Dan Zaloga will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park. Carpenter-Clash-Johnson American Legion Post 50 will conduct military graveside services on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at cemetery Park.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Theodore "Ted" Swanson
KINGSFORD - Theodore "Ted" Swanson, 67, formerly of 700 Elizabeth St. in East Kingsford, died peacefully and unexpectedly Thursday, Sept.14, 2006, at Clement Zablocki Veterans Hospital in Milwaukee.
He was born Jan. 3, 1939, in Kingsford. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1957 and enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he began his career in electronics. When he received his discharge, he held a position as chief analyst, airborne navigational electronics with the Strategic Air Command.
Ted was considered one of the pioneer engineers in the cable and television distribution field. He began his cable career in Iron Mountain/Kingsford. As his expertise increased, Ted became co-founder/operator of the cable systems in Rhinelander and Stevens Point, Wis. Ted's next position was vice president of engineering for the largest cable system in the United States, which included more than 45 cable systems throughout the U.S. As his career progressed, Ted was involved in the construction of some of the larger cable systems in the U.S. which included the cities of Los Angeles, Albuquerque, N.M., Des Moine, Iowa, Reno Nev., Naples, Fla. and Indianapolis, Ind.
Due to health conditions, Ted's career concluded in West Palm Beach, Fla. In the next few years, Ted became very involved as a volunteer in the Emergency Trauma Center at St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach. One of the highlights of his more than 5, 000 hours of volunteer work happened on the evening of March 13, 1997, when former President Bill Clinton was brought in with an injury and Ted helped with his care during his hospital stay.
Ted enjoyed remodeling, fishing, nature and life in the Upper Peninsula.
He married the former Faye Smeester in 1963, and she preceded him in death in 1980. He was also preceded in death by his father, Kenneth 'K.O.' Swanson.
He is survived by his son, Theodore 'Ted' Swanson Jr. of Manitou Springs, Colo.; daughters, Fabia (Jay) Bracklein of Boone, Iowa, Sarita (Korrie) VanMaanen of Rock Valley, Iowa and Adora Thayer of Florida; his mother, Elsie Swanson of Kingsford; a brother, Gary (Roswitha) Swanson of Thomasville, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two nieces and many friends and relatives; his dearest friend, Marikay Henricksen of Wausaukee, Wis. and his princess, Maya.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
The funeral service will follow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in Quinnesec cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association..

Ervo A. Tarsi
KINGSFORD - Evro A. Tarsi, 85, formerly of 504 Roycroft St. in Kingsford, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2006, at Evergreen Heights Assisted Living in Kingsford.
He was born Dec. 2, 1920, in Pergola, Italy and was the son of the late Fortunato and Elisa (Tarsi) Tarsi. Evro has been a resident of Iron River and Kingsford his entire life.
He served 58 months during World War II in the European Theatre of Operation with the United States Army. Evro was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry during action against the enemy in Germany. He was honorably discharged in August 1947.
That same month, he started with the M.A. Hanna Mining Co. as an electrician at the Homer mine. But with more than five years of military service behind him, Evro had military life in his blood. In 1947 he organized Iron River's first National Guard anti-aircraft battery. He served as battery commander until 1958 when his unit was converted to a field artillery battalion. At that time he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and continued to serve in that capacity until his retirement from the military in 1971, after completing more than 28 years in service of his country. Throughout his service, he remained employed with M.A. Hanna as an electrician until his retirement.
Evro married the former Ruth S. Maki on Aug. 24, 1946, in Iron River. She preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 1994.
He was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Church, the United States Uniformed Service and the Retired Officers Association of the Michigan National Guard. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and traveling in the United States and Canada with his motorhome. He and his wife had visited all but three states. While working at Hanna, he also worked as an electrician doing private jobs for many individuals and businesses.
Evro is survived by his sons, Randy Tarsi of Crystal Falls, Gary (Margie) Tarsi of Sawyer Lake and Dion (Bonnie) Tarsi of Kingsford; his daughter, Janine Lambon of Crystal Falls; a sister, Norma (Henry) Jabour of Traverse City, lower Michigan; 11 grandchildren, T.J. Lambon, Justin Lambon, Scott and Eric Tarsi, Lisa (Eric) Hermann, Melissa (Scott) Rutter, Luke (Crystal) Lucas, Jake Lucas, Dylan Tarsi, Christopher (Melissa) Tarsi and Kelli (Bjorn) Soderlund; four great-grandchildren, Madison and Riley Tarsi, Bailey and Nathan Rutter; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Sandy Tarsi.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Queen of Peace Church. Fr. Michael Woempner will offer the Mass of the Christian Burial.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Resthaven cemetery in Iron River. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Heide Herzog
HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. - Heide Herzog of Hot Springs Village, Ark., passed on to a better place on Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, after a tough fight with colon cancer.
She was born in Berlin, Germany and came to the United States in 1962. Everyone knew her as a caring, "to the point" individual and a true friend. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and Oma. Heide spent all of her life living each day to the fullest. She also cared for everyone more than herself and always put her family ahead of her thoughts or feelings.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; son, Michael and his wife Dianne of Fairhope, Ala. and their children, Benjamin and Cameron; daughter, Julie and son-in-law Bill Mosher of Denver; sister Ursula Riebe of Berlin; mother-in-law, Lillice Herzog of Randville; several nieces and nephews; many close friends; and sisters in Beta Sigma Phi.
Memorials can be made to Arkansas Hospice or the Hot Springs Village Humane Society (her pet Tyler was always by her side).
Visitation will be at the Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home in Iron Mountain from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, followed by a church service at 12:30 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor James Kaczmarek will officiate. Internment will be the at Iron Mountain cemetery.
The Tondin-Ross and Freeman Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Carmaine J. "Connie" Carpenter
KINGSFORD - Carmaine J. "Connie" Carpenter, 73, of 108 Lawrence St. in Kingsford, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette.
Connie was born June 7, 1933, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Adolph and Dorothy (Hocking) Sorenson. She was a resident of the area her entire life.
Connie married Bruce L. Carpenter on June 25, 1949, at Balsam St. Christian Church in Kingsford. He preceded her in death on Sept. 24, 2004. Connie worked for various restaurants in the Iron Mountain area and was an active member of Balsam St. Christian Church, where she was very dedicated. She enjoyed her dog, Pushon.
Connie was a very special person and will be missed by all who loved her.
She is survived by a brother, Vernon Sorenson of Kingsford; nieces and nephews who were like her own children, Jodi (Jaime) Goulette and their children, Tara, Amber and Ashley and Jeff (Cindy) Kleinschmidt and their children, Justin, Brooke and Kimberly; several other nieces and nephews; and her great-great nephew who brought her so much joy the past four years, Gavin Goulette.
Connie was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Visitation will be today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain and on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Balsam St. Christian Church in Kingsford.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Pastor Elton Carlson will officiate.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.

Harry A. Levenburg
KINGSFORD- Harry Levenburg, 91, passed away on Jan. 22, 2007 in Kingsford.
He was born on Nov. 27, 1915, in Detroit.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth in 1996; his daughter, Andrea in 2001; his son, Barry in 1971; and his sisters, Rose Sacks and Shirley Finn Adelman.
He served overseas in the U.S. Air Force for four years during World War II.
He was a successful businessman in Detroit for 34 years in the bar business.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a proud Shriner. He retired to Florida in 1981 and moved to the Iron Mountain/Kingsford area in 2004.
He loved spending time with family, fishing, traveling the world and most of all working. He was a avid fisherman and loved the outdoors.
His smile could warm your heart. He was warm, generous, kind, humble and most of all funny. He loved handing out candy to the children and charming the ladies. He made an impression on all who knew him and he will be greatly missed.
Harry is survived by a sister, Sylvia (David) Weisberg; son, Gene (Cindy) Levenburg; grandson, Barry Levenburg; granddaughter, Sara (Peter) Hollinson and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
A private family service will be held.

Barbara J. Gray
IRON MOUNTAIN - Barbara J. Gray, 88, of Iron Mountain, died on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Feb. 17, 1918, in Quinnesec, daughter of the late Arthur and Olive (Hicks) Grenfell. Barbara was a graduate of Quinnesec High School and has been a lifelong resident of this area.
Barbara worked as a cook and housekeeper for the Nicholson-'s farm in Waucedah for several years.
She married F. Harold Gray on April 7, 1938, in Iron Mountain and he preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 2000. In 1946, they bought a dairy farm in Waucedah and operated it for 25 years. They operated a milk route for 45 years. She owned and operated the Waucedah Restaurant for three years. She and her husband sold the farm and moved to Hermansville where Barbara was the head cook at the Wildwood Restaurant for 22 years, retiring in 1985.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school at the Hermansville Methodist church for many years. Barbara was an active member of the Rebekka Lodge and the Pythian Sisters. She was a 4-H volunteer and a member of the Waucedah Square Dancing Club. She loved to dance and listen to music. Barbara enjoyed gardening and was an excellent cook.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Beverly Moraska of Milwaukee; a daughter-in-law, Jane Bolander-Gray of Menominee; two brothers, Arthur (Alice) Grenfell of Milwaukee and David (Betty) Grenfell of Oshkosh, Wis.; a sister, Marlene (Richard) Dielen of Marinette, Wis.; four grandchildren, Jody Spearman and Julie (Kevin) Nichols, both of Menominee, Sheila (Darrin) Olson and Pamela Moraska, both of Milwaukee; three great-grandchildren, Sydnie Spearman and Nicholas and Dominic Moraska; three step-grandchildren, Rick, Todd (Leslie) and Scott Bolander and several step great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Walz of Iron Mountain and brother-in -law, William Gray of Livonia, lower Michigan; and many nieces and nephews and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Thomas Gray; a son-in-law, Wallace Moraska; two brothers, Roy and Eldridge Grenfell; and a sister, Ruth Grenfell.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the church. Rev. Debbie Thomas and Rev. David Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to Trinity United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with funeral arrangements.
