Sgt. First Class James Priestap
HARDWOOD - Sgt. First Class James Priestap, 39, of Hardwood, went to be with Jesus in heaven on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 2006.
He was born on June 2, 1967, in Royal Oak, lower Michigan.
James was a resident of the Foster City area since 1970 and graduated from North Dickinson High School in 1985. He attended Ferris State and NMU. He was a substitute teacher at several schools. He joined the U.S. Navy and was a rescue swimmer and a fireman in damage control maintenance. He received special honors for his heroic efforts for removing an individual from a blazing fire. Jim also served as a specialist in chemical and biological warfare.
Young boys and girls have dreams of becoming a policeman, fireman, pilot, diver, welder, sailor or soldier. Jim Priestap was each one of these and more. His career included work as a deputy in Sarasota, Fla., a police officer at the Iron Mountain Veteran's Administration Medical Center, and a deputy for the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department. He also served to support Hurricane Katrina victims. Jim also enjoyed hunting.
He married Constance Harder on June 11, 1994, in Felch.
He is survived by his wife, Constance; his son, Brody and his daughter, Franchesca; his guardian son, Josh Headford; his parents, Roy and Denise Forstrom of Foster City and James and Patrice Robinson of North Carolina; his grandmother, Helen Mattson of Felch; his brothers, Allen (Renee) Forstrom of Felch, Troy (Joanne) Forstrom of Lunenburg, Mass. and Rich Robinson of Florida; his sisters, Lisa (Mark) Balicki of Iron Mountain and Janet (Rodney) Anderson of Norway; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Douglas and Emmy Lou Harder of Felch; Connie's seven sisters, Kelly (Jim) Challancin of Felch, Kim (Chris) Colavecchi of Iron Mountain, Candie (Kevin) Colavecchi (Connie's twin sister) of Iron Mountain, Katie (Abe) Lewis of Iron Mountain, Karen (Brad) Ellis of Iron Mountain, Cassie Harder and (fiance, Peter Rittenhouse) of Iron Mountain, and Corrie (Dean) Ellis of Orlando, Fla., many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Kingsford Armory.
There will also be a visitation on Monday, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the Kingsford Armory. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 12 noon at the Kingsford Armory. Pastor Terry Priestap, James' uncle, will officiate with Pastor Carl Hammer.
Burial, with full military honors, will be in the Foster City cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Challancin, Jon Wagner, Allen Forstrom, Troy Forstrom, Rodney Anderson, Mark Balicki, Rich Robinson, Josh Headford, Mike Mooney, Tony Cousineau, Peter Rittenhouse, Abe Lewis, Chris Colavecchi, Kevin Colavecchi, Brad Ellis, Dean Ellis, Paul Holton, Matt Pacino, Steve Romatz, Dennis Romatz, Dennis Goovert, James Mather, and Robert Rosales.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Sgt. James Priestap Memorial Trust Fund at either First National Bank and Trust of Iron Mountain at 231 S. Stephenson Ave. Iron Mountain, MI 49801 or the Range Bank of Kingsford at 345 Carpenter Ave. Kingsford, Michigan, 49802.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Max D. McCallum
IRON MOUNTAIN - Max D. McCallum, 83, of 848 East C St. in Iron Mountain, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born on May 6, 1923, in Detroit, son of the late Neil and Veva (Currier) McCallum.
Max served in the United States Army from 1943-1945 in France during World War II as a member of the military police and medic unit.
He married Marjorie Holtien on Dec. 23, 1944, and she preceded him in death in 2003. He attended and graduated from the DundonĀ's School of Business.
Max worked as a meat cutter at the A & P, and then as a custodian at the Iron Mountain Public Schools until retiring in 1989.
He enjoyed going to camp, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed gardening and carpentry.
Max is survived by his children, Pat (Terry) Trempe of Kingsford, Dan McCallum of Iron Mountain, and Debbie (William) Knutson of Fence, Wis.; sisters, Velma Krause, Gertrude Robison, and Mildred Beversdorf, all of lower Michigan; grandchildren, Steve Trempe, Scott Trempe, and Michelle (Mark) Herman; a great-grandchild, Jacob Cousineau; and step great-grandchildren, Alex and Alena Herman
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Melvin McCallum, and three sisters, Lorene Krauss, Madeline Chapdeline, and Adeline Robison
Private family services were held.
Burial was in cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Family requests that flowers be omitted.
Max was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather and friend to all. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Ernest D. Zambon
IRON MOUNTAIN - Ernest D. Zambon, 58, of 1108 East E St., Iron Mountain, died, Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at his camp.
He was born on Oct.17, 1948, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Frank and Leah (Marlow) Zambon. Ernie was a 1966 graduate of Iron Mountain High School. He was a third generation owner and operator of Zambon Decorating Co. of Iron Mountain.
Ernie was one of the first members of the neighborhood partnership to revitalize the Northside of Iron Mountain. With Zambon Decorating's longtime association with Pittsburgh Paints, Ernie was able to obtain grants and materials for improvements in the Northside neighborhoods. He was always willing to volunteer his time and equipment to the needs of the Iron Mountain Schools.
Ernie was a member of the Painters Union, the Sagola Sportsmans Club, Iron Mountain Elks Club, Paisano Club, the Iron Mountain Pool League and the National Rifle Association. He was an avid Detroit Lions fan. Ernie enjoyed traveling and his vacations to Mexico. In his younger years, he raced snowmobiles.
Ernie had a great love for his camp, EZ's North Forty+. With his beloved dog Lucy at his side, he opened his camp to a number of family members and friends. He loved the tradition of celebrating and held great feasts. Hunting and deer season brought Ernie some of the best of times. He especially enjoyed hosting the annual black powder shoot. Big-hearted Ernie, with a twinkle in his eye, always had a story to tell. On many occasions, he reached out to others in need.
Gentle spirited, generous and affectionate, Ernie will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He would often say, "Don't ever say goodbye, say see ya." He left a legacy of wonderful memories that will be shared by those who treasured him. He will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his fiance`, Marianne Strait and her son Tyler; his sisters, Sandra Zambon of Green Bay, Wis., Barbara (David) Wescher of West Bend, Wis., Frances (Warren) Dean of Littlestown, Pa., and Beverly (Thomas) VanHemelryk of DePere, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jeff and two nieces, Michele Bashe and Sherry VanHemelryk.
Visitation will be on Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Raymond Valerio will officiate.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

William P. "Hy Power" Hyland
KINGSFORD - William P. "Hy Power" Hyland, 69, of 413 Lawrence St. in Kingsford, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
William was born Dec. 9, 1936, in Kingsford, son of the late Joseph and Caroline (Marik) Hyland. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1956 and was a lifelong resident of the area.
He worked for Kingsford Broach and Tool for many years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Eastern Dickinson County Sportsmen's Club and a past member of the Elks. William was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing and spending time at camp.
He is survived by three children, Todd (Judy) Hyland of Kingsford, Tami (Dino) Romagnoli of Iron Mountain and Tim (Anne) Hyland of Faribault, Minn.; his significant other, Mary Amundson of Kingsford; a brother, Joseph (Arlene) Hyland of Oconto Falls, Wis.; two sisters, Joan (Clark) Linn of Kingsford and Patricia (Robert) Lindholm of Iron Mountain; nine grandchildren, Nikki (Ryan) Wender, Chelsea and Courtney Hyland, Justin Murphy, Tia and Bruce Romagnoli, and Malisa, Molly and Macy Hyland; three sisters-in-law, Patricia Hyland of Kingsford, and Jean and Grace Hyland, both of Oconto Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
William was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Smith; three brothers, John, Robert and James Hyland; a brother-in-law, Philip Smith; and two nephews, James Hyland Jr. and John Hyland.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Monday at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
Memorial services will follow at 12 Noon at the funeral home. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate.
Honorary pallbearers will be Todd Johnson, John and David Linn, Gary Antonetti, Bruce Terwillegar, Rick Peotter and Roger Secrist.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain with the funeral arrangements.

Leona Pauline Hart
KINGSFORD - Leona Pauline Hart, 89, of 112 Lawrence St. in Kingsford, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at her home.
She was born on May 26, 1917, in Limestone Township, the daughter of the late William and Vangie (Terrio) Vaughan.
Leona owned and operated Lee's Beauty Shop in her home for more than 25 years. She also was a teacher at the one room school house in Ralph, worked at an ammo factory in Holland, worked as a beautician at Pine Manor Nursing Home, and had worked at Montgomery Wards and Miller Floral.
Leona had a strong faith and had a ladies Bible study on Thursday mornings in her home. She was a member of the Balsam Street Christian Church. She enjoyed being in the outdoors, fishing, hunting, crocheting, canning, and playing cards especially smear and rummy. She will be fondly remembered for her love of Cool Whip.
Leona married Robert Hart in Iron Mountain on May 25, 1946. He preceded her in death on March 25, 1998.
She is survived by three daughters Sherry (Thomas) Smithson of Green Bay, Wis., Mary Beth (Albert) Schupp of Kingsford, and Lori Hart of Lincoln, Neb.; one sister Grace McMahon of Kingsford; nine grandchildren, Robert Smithson, Josette Smithson, Andrew (Kimberly) Smithson, Scott (fiance, Carla Pearce) Sparapani, Tony (fiance, Julie Poquette) Sparapani, Heather (Brad) Schmutzler, Jay Harner, Ryan (Beth) Harner and Mychel Hall; two great-grandchildren Jonathon and Kaitlyn Schmutzler who were her pride and joy, and her special kitty, Boris.
She was preceded in death by a brother Doward Vaughan.
Visitation will be Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Larry Neargarth will officiate.
Burial will be in the Quinnesec cemetery.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers and her great-grandson will be an honorary pallbearer.
The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain, Michigan with the arrangements.

Christine L. Rocconi
IRON MOUNTAIN - Christine L. Rocconi, 84, of Iron Mountain, passed away Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, in Iron Mountain.
Chris was born on Friday, Oct. 13, 1922, in Sampson County, N.C., daughter of the late Brilla and Vander Smith. She graduated from Clement High School and attended Pineland Junior College in Salemburg, N.C.
Christine worked as a secretary at Fort Bragg, N.C. during World War II where she met Etolo "Rac" Rocconi. They were married March 28, 1946, in Fayetteville, N.C.
Chris and Rac resided in Iron Mountain their entire lives where they raised their family. Christine cherished her role as wife, mother and homemaker. She was a faithful and loving support to her husband and children and Rac's devoted caretaker in his final years.
Chris is survived by her children, Joanne (Michael) Bowen of Boulder, Colo., Patricia Nemode of Traverse City, lower Michigan, Janet (Michael) Rocconi Froze of Cedarburg, Wis. and Charles Rocconi of Traverse City; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel, Benjamin, Rachael, Emily, David and Scott; four sisters, Joyce Jackson, Betty Lou Holland, Annette Tew and Phyllis Ring; two brothers, Mack Smith and Charles Smith; one sister-in-law, Inez Bugni and many nieces and nephews.
Christine was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Rudolph, Herrell, V.B. and Bronze; and one sister, Clara.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Kingsford Funeral Home. Parish prayers will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9 a.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Church. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of the Christian burial. Tom Bugni will serve as lector during Mass.
Burial will be in cemetery Park.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Nemode, Benjamin Nemode, Scott Nemode, David Froze, Charles Smith and Stephen McPhail.
A memorial will be established in her memory.
The family has entrusted the Kingsford Funeral Home with the funeral arrangements.

Alden "Buck" Herman
AURORA, Wis. - Alden J. "Buck" Herman, 85, of Aurora, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at ManorCare Health Services.
He was born on May 15, 1921, in Norway, the son of the late Joseph and Alma (Neveau) Herman.
Buck was part of the Greatest Generation, enlisting the Army Air Corps on Sept. 30, 1940.
He served in the Army Air Corps, which after World War II became the U.S. Air Force, until his retirement on July 1, 1968. Buck served in World War II in the European Theater, in the Korean Conflict, and during Vietnam. He was an aircraft mechanic on the B-17 Bomber and a military instructor. He achieved the rank of E-9 chief master sergeant.
Buck received the American Defense Service Medal, the American Theater Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal with Silver Loop, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Medal with one bronze service star, Air Force Longevity Service Award with five bronze oak leaf clusters, and a USAF NCO Education Graduate Ribbon.
Alden was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Oak Crest Golf Course.
He married Margaret Haas on Sept. 28, 1943, in Karney, Neb.
He is survived by his wife Margaret; two sons Craig (Kelly) Herman of Green Bay, Wis. and David (Stacy) Herman of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one brother, Jim Herman of Milwaukee; one sister, Joyce Osby of Escanaba; three grandchildren, Amy Covelli, Andrea Schaeffer, and Matthew Herman; and four great-grandchildren, Crystal, Roman, Ryan, and Kara.
He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Herman and three sisters, Betty Steeno, Shirley Larsh, and Fern Larson.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 11am at Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11a.m. at the funeral Home. Fr. Michael Betley will officiate.
Burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora cemetery.
The Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is assisting the family with arrangements.
