JONES - William H. T. Jones - Father Norman Thomas officiated at the Feb. 15 services held for William Howard Taft Jones Jr. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Mr. Jones died Feb. 6. He was 64. Born March 3, 1932 in Birmingham, Alabama, Mr. Jones graduated from A. H. Parker High School. He later attended Alabama A&M University before moving to Detroit in 1952. After joining St. Cecilia Catholic Church in 1969, Mr. Jones, who was better known as Bill, became active in the parish. He served as parish council president, joined the usher board and served as recording secretary. He also assisted in the Cub Scouts, becoming a scout master. A member of the K of C since 1973, he served as deputy grand knight and later financial secretary. He eventually earned the K of C's highest honor, the silver medal for Outstanding Services to the Knights of Peter Claver. He also volunteered in various other community organizations. Retiring in 1994 from his career as a construction safety inspector for the state of Michigan, Mr. Jones attended the 1995 Million Man March in Washington, D.C. Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty Jean Jones; sons, Kenneth and Harry; daughter, Pamela; daughter-in-law, Vera; three grandchildren, sisters, Annie Benifield, Lillie Jones and Dorothy Hardy; brother, Lorenzo, and many other relatives. Arrangements were handled by the James H. Cole Home for Funerals. Interment was at Woodlawn cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle, February 19-25, 1996 Page D-6).

KENDRICK - Lucille Kendrick - Services for Lucille Kendrick, 82, were held Jan. 4 at Vinewood Church of Christ with Brother Kate Dosoo officiating. Mrs. Kendrick died Dec. 28 in her home. Born in Washington County, Georgia on Feb. 19, 1914, Mrs. Kendrick later moved with her family to Dublin, Georgia and then to Winter Garden, Florida. She was lovingly known as "Snubbie" to her family and friends. Married to James Kendrick in 1948, the couple later moved to Syracuse, New York. In 1952 they relocated to Detroit. After moving to Detroit she became a domestic, working in private homes. In addition to fishing and picnicking, Mrs. Kendrick enjoyed doing the hair of family members and friends before her poor health forced her to stop. Mrs. Kendrick is survived by her sisters Nina Lane, Ada Lee Wade, and Juanita Temple Johnson; brother, Julian Temple, and many other relatives. Arrangements were handled by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at Metropolitan Memorial cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle, February 19-25, 1996 Page D-6).

KNOTT - Orlandars Knott - The Rev. Lovell Knott officiated at the Jan. 24 services held for Orlandars Knott at the Thompson Funeral Home Greenfield chapel. Mr. Knott, 59, died Jan. 16. Born July 27, 1937 in Bessemer, Alabama, Mr. Knott was raised in Tishabee, Alabama by his grandparents. He was educated in the Wood Public School there. After moving to Detroit in the 50s, he joined Leland Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Knott is survived by his wife, Mattie Mae; daughters, Doris Mitchell, Joan, Kathy and Mary Knott; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, mother, Mary Johnson; father, Nathaniel Johnson; brother, James Lee; sister, Barbara Johnson, and many others. Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park-East. (Michigan Chronicle, February 5-11, 1997, page D-6)

KNOX - Johnnie Mae Knox - The Rev. James L. Morman officiated at services held for Johnnie Mae Knox on Feb. 1 at Christian Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mrs. Knox died Jan. 24. She was 70. Mrs. Knox was educated in the Detroit Public Schools, maintaining a high grade point average throughout. After graduation from Northeastern High School she married James Knox. Mrs. Knox was a strong believer in the pursuit of excellence in all areas of life, for herself as well as her family. She is survived by her daughters, Chere and LaVoina; son, James; several grandchildren and many other relatives. Arrangements were handled by Thompson Funeral Homes. Interment was at Woodlawn cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle, February 5-11, 1997, page D-6)

LEE - Paul Lee Jr. - Pastor Bernard Smith officiated at the February 7 funeral services for Paul Lee Jr. who died at the age of 74. Mr. Lee was born on October 31, 1923 in Edwards, Mississippi, the seventh son of Johnny Lee and Malisie Hardison. He joined the Army in 1943 and ultimately became a decorated World War II veteran. After his years with the service ended, Mr. Lee was hired by the Chrysler Corp. as an arc welder. That same year (1946) he married Amanda Flowers. They had a son, Roy and a daughter, Monica. Also in 1946, Mr. Lee became a member of Warren Avenue Missionary Baptist Church. Cherishing the memory of Paul Lee Jr. are his daughter Monica, two granddaughters, two sisters and other relatives. Swanson Funeral Homes Inc. handled arrangements. Interment was at Lincoln Memorial Park cemetery. (Michigan Chronicle, March 19-25, 1997, page D-5).

LEE - Thernell Lee - The Reverend Robert F. Holloman officiated at the December 11 services held for Thernell Lee at the Thompson Funeral Home Greenfield chapel. Mr. Lee died December 3 after a long illness. He was 64. Born May 24, 1932, in Augusta, Georgia, Mr. Lee was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. A skilled carpenter, he relocated to Detroit in 1958. In 1964, Mr. Lee began employment with the Chrysler Corporation. He was employed there as a glass cutter until poor health forced his retirement. Mr. Lee is survived by his wife, June; children, Timothy and Lynice; grandchildren, Kenyetta, Vincent Jr., Jessica and Denesha; brother, George Green; step-brother, Harold Scrandrick; sisters, Sarah Heard, Judith Moten and Delores Thornton, and many others. Interment was at Mt. Hope Memorial Gardens. (Michigan Chronicle, December 31 - January 7, 1997, page 7-D).

LEONARD - Aubrey C. Leonard - Services were held at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, March 29 for Aubrey C. Leonard, with Rev. Asriel G. McLain officiating. Ms. Leonard, 51, died March 21. Born February 2, 1946 in Livingston, Alabama, Ms. Leonard was educated in Jefferson County schools. She moved to Detroit in 1965, and was employed as an Ameritech Supervisor in Sterling Heights. She retired in 1994. She is survived by her mother, Canary Leonard; daughter, Regina Samone Leonard; grandson, DeMarco Rondell Leonard; brothers, Robert, Sidney and Ed Leonard Jr.; sisters, Allen Jean Miller and Lois Whitfield; stepsisters, Barbara An Craig and Cassie Mae Lindsey; stepbrother, George Craig; and many others. Arrangements were handled by Swanson Funeral Home. Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park West in Redford. (Michigan Chronicle, May 14-20, 1997, pg. D-5).

LILLY - Cortely Lilly - Services for Cortely Lilly were held April 9 at the Bethel Church of the Apostolic Faith. Elder Phillip Cole officiated. Mr. Lilly, 86, died April 3. Mr. Lilly was born March 26, 1911 in Boston, Georgia. He married in 1944 and moved to Detroit in 1953. He worked at the Cavanaugh Construction Company and retired from it on March 28, 1973. Mr. Lilly is survived by his wife, Pearlie Mae Lilly; two children, Roosevelt and Shelly; four sisters, Annie Kate Reese and Lula Pierce of Florida, Wessie Thomas and Norris Booker; daughter-in-law, Camilla; brother-in-law, Son Thomas; seven grandchildren, Roosevelt Jr., Theodora, Pamela, Roderick, Marcus, DeShawn and Eboni; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Interment was at Mt. Hope Memorial Gardens. Arrangements were handled by Swanson Funeral Home Inc. (Michigan Chronicle, May 14-20, 1997, pg. D-6).

LINDSAY - Elizabeth Wynn-Lindsay - Services for Elizabeth Wynn-Lindsay were held at St. James Missionary Baptist Church, March 5, with the Rev. James A. Jennings officiating. Mrs. Wynn-Lindsay died March 8 at the age of 71. Born September 29, 1925 in Starksville, Mississippi, Mrs. Wynn-Lindsay was educated in Starksville. In 1944, she moved to Detroit with her family and was active in Tabernacle Baptist Church. She also enjoyed preparing food to share with family and friends. Mrs. Wynn-Lindsay is survived by her husband, George Lindsay; daughter, Betty; sons, Willie Wynn Jr., Warren, Reginald, Thomas and Bernard Wynn; sixteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many others. Arrangements were handled by Swanson Funeral Home. (Michigan Chronicle, April 16-22, 1997, pg. D-4).

WILLIAMS - Mary G. Williams - Services were held at the Dexter Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home Inc. for Mary G. Williams, with Bishop Phillip Pulliam officiating. Ms. Williams was born and raised in Memphis, Tenn. Before her passing, she rededicated her life to the Lord. Ms. Williams is survived by her long time friend William Thomas; sons, Ernest Paul Love, Navarro Winston and Morgan Raynard Winston; daughter, Tracie A. Williams; grandsons, Mark-Anthony Williams and Christopher Williams; brothers, Emery Adams and Charles Byas; and many others. Cremation was at Tri County Cremation Services in Ypsilanti.

WYCHE - Eunice Naomi Martin-Wyche - Services for Eunice Naomi Martin-Wyche were held Oct. 13, 1997 at Thompson Funeral Home with Rev. Melvin L. Williams officiating. Mrs. Martin-Wyche, 79, died Oct. 9, 1997. Born Dec. 5, 1917 in Waynesboro, Ga., Mrs. Martin-Wyche moved to Morristown, N. J. at an early age, where she later met and married Riley T. Martin III. From this union came four children. Mrs. Martin-Wyche III was preceded in death by her five brothers and second husband, Willie Wyche. Mrs. Martin-Wyche is survived by her four children, Riley, Theodore, Christine and Barbara; sister, Josephine Russell-Whiteman; seven grandchildren, Sabrina, Carron, Dorian, Daphne, Monette, Bettina and Melisa; 10 great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives. Arrangements were made by Thompson Funeral Home. Cremation was at Tri-County Cremation Services.

CARROLL - Walter H. Carroll - Services for Walter H. Carroll were held at Swanson Funeral Home, May 12, with Rev. Steve Arthur officiating. Mr. Carroll, 52, died May 6, 1997 at Sinai Hospital. Born April 7, 1945, in Edwards, Miss., Mr. Carrol was educated in the Dallas Independent School District, and was a graduate of Madison High School in Dallas. After graduation, Mr. Carroll was drafted into the Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. Following his discharge in 1965, he moved to Detroit, where he continued his education at Wayne State University. Mr. Carroll was a past master of Tyre Lodge #34 P. H. A., a past fraternal member of Wolverine Consistory #6 and past Potentate of Marracci Temple #13. For many years, he enjoyed being in the Color Guard of Marracci Temple's Drum and Bugle Corp. He is survived by his wife, Monica Carroll; daughter, Waltreese Carroll; sisters, Jessie Manns, Pearlena Luckey and DeLoris Moore; brothers, Willie, Emanuel and Albert; and many others. Interment was at Lincoln Memorial Park cemetery.

GIBBONS-ANDERSON - Vivian Rose Gibbons-Anderson - Services were held July 19 at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church for Vivian Rose Gibbons-Anderson with Rev. J. H. Johnson officiating. Ms. Anderson, 68, died July 13, 1997 at Grace Hospital. Ms. Gibbons was born to the late James and Rebecca Gibbons Sept. 17, 1928, in Sandersville, Ga. She moved to Detroit with her family in 1935, where she joined Hamlett Temple CME Church. She was educated in Detroit public schools and graduated from Northern High in 1945. She studied music in college and attended Breithaupt Vocational-Technical School, where she excelled in culinary arts. Ms. Gibbons worked for Birmingham Plastics for more than 15 years and worked as a banquet server for more than 20 years with Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union Local 24. She also did food catering and cake decorating. She is survived by her brother, Cecil; daughters, Eunice Appling and Rochelle Hunt; son, James and a host of other relatives and friends. Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park. Arrangements were made by Thompson Funeral Home, Inc.

HICKS - Jefferson Hicks - Services for Jefferson Hicks were held July 12 at St. Matthew's and St. Joseph's Episcopal Church with Fr. Glendon Heath Officiating. Mr. Hicks, 52, died July 7, 1997. Mr. Hicks was born Feb. 14, 1945 to Fannie and George W. Hicks in Detroit and excelled in athletics at Ferndale High School in royal Oak. He lead his basketball team to the Class A Championship. It was the school's only state basketball championship. After earning an athletic scholarship at Northwood Institute and participating in several varsity sports, Mr. Hicks graduated with an associate degree in business administration. He worked for the F. W. Woolworth Company in Kalamazoo and was promoted to branch manager and buyer before becoming a buyer for the J. L. Hudson Company. In 1969, with the help of family and close friends, Mr. Hicks started Young Men on the Move Inc., which specialized in the manufacture and packaging of plastic products for retail stores.
He married the former Charlotte A. Mackey Aug. 29, 1970, and, in 1979, started Pearl's Kitchen, a minority food brokerage firm. Mr. Hicks was honored as Small Businessman of the Year by the Small Business Administration in 1972 and Entrepreneur of the Year by the Minority Women Network in 1995. Inc. Magazine awarded him a plaque declaring Pearl's Kitchen "one of the fastest growing private companies in America in 1989. Under Mr. Hick's direction, Pearl's Kitchen annually paid several Ferndale students fees at summer basketball camps. The firm also supported the Motor City Mavericks' 1995 National Amateur Athletic Union championship basketball season and Detroit's Midnight Basketball league.
Mr. Hicks is survived by his wife; daughter Cortney; sons, Dorie, Jeremiah, Rondell; sisters, Marie (William) Brooks, Nellie (James) Rice, Annie (James) Guinn; brothers, Herman, George Jr., Grady, and a host of other relatives and friends. Arrangements were made by McCabe Funeral Home, Farmington Hills.

MCGHEE - Charles G. McGhee - Services were held at Swanson Funeral Home May 27 for Charles G. McGhee. Mr. McGhee, 89, died May 22, 1997. Born April 27, 1908, Mr. McGhee was a member of AA for 40 years. He is survived by his children, Clarence L. McGhee and Jacquelyne R. Packer; granddaughter, Monique McGhee; great-grandsons Kye McGhee and Marcus Thurston and many others. Interment was at Detroit Memorial Park.

PERRY - Keith L. Perry - Services were held for Keith Lorenzo Perry, May 17 at Exodus Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. J. J. Perry officiating. Mr. Perry was 35 when he died May 10, 1997. Mr. Perry --- or Scrooge, as he was known --- was born Aug. 26, 1961 in Centreville, Ala. to Rev. Joseph J. and Dorothy Perry. The family moved to Detroit in April of 1965 where Mr. Perry was educated in Detroit public schools. Mr. Perry, who loved to sing, was baptized in his father's church, Exodus Missionary Baptist Church, Oct. 17, 1971, and served on the Youth Usher Board, Youth and Young Adult Choir, Workshop Choir and Deacon Ministry and was co-chairman of the Trustee Ministry. He married Carolyn Robertson Nov. 5, 1988. Mr. Perry is survived by his wife; daughter, Natassia; father; mother; brothers, Joseph Jr., Kenneth; sisters, Andrea M. Davis, Sherron O. Perry and a host of other relatives and friends. Interment was at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements were made by Swanson Funeral Home, Inc.

SIMPSON - Lula Simpson - Services for Lula M. Simpson were held July 19, at The Love Baptist church. Rev. Herbert B. Robinson officiated. Mrs. Simpson, 64, died July 12, 1997. Born Dec. 13, 1932, Mrs. Simpson graduated from Pershing High School. She married Thomas Simpson in 1959. She retired from Arrow Uniform Company as an embroider operator. She was also a co-founder of the Roselawn Block Club. She was a member of the True Love Baptist Church choir. Mrs. Simpson is survived by her husband, Thomas; stepson, Woodruff; sister-in-law, Mable Bingham; nieces, Patricia, Phyliss and Roslyn (Undra); nephews, Kevin and Kenneth (Lisa); two step grandchildren; two great step grandchildren; four great nieces; four great nephews; an aunt, Ella Anderson; and a host of other relatives. Arrangements were made by Thompson Funeral Home Inc. Interment was at Grand Lawn cemetery.
