Margaret Hendra Rees, 85, of 7111 Abrahamson Road, died Saturday, July 9 at her home following an extended illness. She was born Jan. 15, 1919 in Savanna, Ill. She was a 55-year member of the Order of Eastern Stars in the Pasadena, Calif. Order, the Red Cross Blood Bank and the Literary Club, and supported many charitable organizations. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Miller-Todd, granddaughter, Shannon Brooke Todd and great-granddaughter, Raina Curren, all of Huntington Beach, Calif.; one grandson, Michael R. Morris of Ft. Worth, Texas, and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings; husbands J. Stadden Miller, DDS and Christopher Hendra; daughter Laurene Williams; son Stephen Miller; grandson Christopher Todd and former husband Paul Rees. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 14 at Alexander-Rye Funeral Home, the Rev. William Collins officiating. Burial will be later in Savanna, Ill. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to show an expression of sympathy, please consider West Michigan Blood and Cancer Center.

Burton J. Tanis, 82 passed away Friday July 9, 2004 at Tendercare Nursing Home of Ludington after a 3 month illness. He was born April 29, 1922 in Fremont to John C. & Anna (Detmers) Tanis. He attended school and resided in Ludington. he served in the US Army during WWII from 1942-1944, participating in the D-Day invasion landing at Omaha Beach. He was wounded on June 22, 1944 in Counoirs, France. Mr Tanis is a Purple Heart Recipient, and life member of the Harold Snyder Post 30, Disabled American Veterans, and Order of the Purple Heart, and the Edwin H. Ewing Post 76, American Legion. He married Mary Jane Collins on May 19, 1945 in Ludington, and she preceded him in death on July 17, 2000. His hobbies include hunting, gardening, fishing and his dog Buddy.
Burton will be sadly missed by his 2 sons, Robert (& Patricia) Tanis, Dan (& Laura) Tanis, both of Ludington, 1 daughter Mrs. David (Melinda) Keller f Lansing, grandchildren, Bethany & Michael Tanis, Mrs. Andy (Kelly) Larr, and Mrs. Michael (Kerrie) Cooper, 5 great grandchildren, 2 brothers Andrew (& Eleanor) Tanis, and John C. (& Margaret) Tanis, Jr., 1 sister Betty Fillmore. Mr. Tanis was preceded in death in addition to his wife by his parents, 3 brothers, Cornelius Tanis, Ralph Tanis, and Jake Tanis, 2 sisters, Henrietta Laird, and Marion Pahoski.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday July 13 at 11:00 AM at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home with Dr. James Carlson officiating. Visitation was on monday July 12, 2004 from 6-8 PM.

Wilbur W. "Webb" Leonard Sr., 80, of 3333 S. Brye Road, died early Tuesday morning, July 6, 2004 at his home following a short illness. He was born Jan. 15, 1924 in Lincoln, Ill. He graduated from Central High School in Lincoln and spent most of his life in Mason County. On Feb. 13, 1943, he married Evelyn Hofmann in Muskegon, and she survives. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Harold Snyder Post 30, DAV. He was an operating engineer and an iron worker for Towns Construction and he and his son operated a welding and machine shop at his home for many years. He retired in 2002. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Wilbur W. (Lindy) Leonard Jr. of Ludington, Charles Roy (and Rhonda) Leonard of Scottville and James Russell (and Mary) Leonard of Ludington; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one brother, Herbert (and Melba) Leonard of Springfield, Mo.; one sister, LaVerna Moore of Lincoln, Ill.; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mary Alice and two brothers, Harold and Russell. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 8 at Alexander-Rye Funeral Home. Burial will be later in West Riverton cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Michigan, with envelopes available at Alexander-Rye Funeral Home.

C. Howard Hornung, 78, of Hamlin Lake, passed away at home on July 4 after a courageous battle with cancer. Howard was born in Camden, N.Y. Nov. 19, 1925. He was the son of Albert R. Hornung and Anne F. (McCarthy) Hornung. A naval veteran of World War II, Howard served on the battleship USS Knudson in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1949. To this day he is known around town as Ludington's biggest Notre Dame fan. On Aug. 20, 1949, he married Louise Joan Spychalski in South Bend. He began his teaching career at Roosevelt Military Academy in Aledo, Ill. After completing his master's degree from the University of Michigan, Howard moved his family to Ludington where he began a very successful teaching career as band director. He was very proud that he inspired 26 former students to become band directors. Howard was active in the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association, serving as state treasurer. He was well known throughout the state as an outstanding adjudicator for solo, concert band and marching band festivals. In 1981 he was named Band Director of the Year for the state of Michigan. He earned an educational specialist degree from Central Michigan University. He was president of the Mason County Intermediate School Board and also a member of the Mental Health board, Staircase board, and Mason County Commission for Youth. In 1981 he was selected as Ludington's first Citizen of the Year. Howard established a summer band concert series and the Ludington Community Band. He was active in the Scottville Clown Band, Pentwater Band, West Shore Community Band and the Lakeland Community Band in Lakeland, Fla. As a 50-year member of St. Simon's Church, he was a steady presence as usher at the 8 a.m. Sunday Mass. After he retired from teaching, he served two years as principal for St. Simon's Elementary School. Recently he was active with the Tuesday Morning Prayer Breakfast at Ludington Community Church and the American Legion. Howard was a member of the Edwin H. Ewing Post 76, the American Legion. His hobbies included golf and spending time with his grandchildren.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild, Gregory Hornung. He is survived by his wife, Louise; two sisters, Sister Mary Jeremy Hornung IHM of Scranton, Pa. and Alice Anne (Clayton) Foster of West Monroe, N.Y.; three sons, Paul of Madison Heights, Charles Jr. (Susan) of Kentwood and Jere (Kimberly) of Wellesley, Mass. and two daughters, Tina of Salt Lake City and Beth (Jeff) Johnson of Scottville. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Patrick Hornung, Christopher Hornung, Kelly Hornung, Michael Johnson, Molly Hornung, Benjamin Johnson, Laura Hornung, Travis Johnson, Sarah Johnson, Franny Johnson, Matthew Hornung and Russell Hornung.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 7 at St. Simon Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr Ken Schichtel, celebrant. Visitation was at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 6. Burial was in Pere Marquette cemetery under the auspices of the Edwin H. Ewing Post 76, the American Legion. Offerings in memory of Howard will be used for the C. Howard Hornung Music Scholarship Fund.

Pam (Johnson) Kipen, 37 of 206 S. Emily St. passed away early Tuesday at home after an extended illness. Pam Johnson was born in Ludington on July 8, 1966. She lived in the area most of her life, and was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Ludington. She graduated from Ludington High School in 1984 and attended Muskegon Business College. She loved animals and was active in Lakeshore Animal Friends.
She is survived by her fiance' Troy Wiltjer of Ludington & his parents John & Nancy Dykgraaf of Grand Rapids, her parents Aggie & Fred Bellanger of Ludington, 3 sisters Cindy Zwinger (& Tom Marsh) of Walhalla, Julie (& Mike) Samuels of Ludington, Terri (& Keith) Quillan of Scottville, 3 stepchildren Kendra, Olivia, & Travis Wiltjer, nieces & nephews, Heather Williamson, Holly Zwinger, Nick & Luke Samuels, & Tyler Quillan, great niece & nephew, Damon Williamson & Haven Zwinger, aunts, uncles, & cousins. She was preceded in death by 1 brother Rusty, & her maternal grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Herman Bentz, & her father in law Tom Wiltjer. Visitation was on Thursday July 1 at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Memorial services were at11:00 AM Friday July 2, at the St. John's Lutheran Church with Rev. Thomas Boehne officiating, a luncheon followed services at the Church.

Percy Lawrence Campeau, 91, of 4063 W. Colburn Road, died Saturday, June 26 at Memorial Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born on May 12, 1913 in the home where he currently lived. He married Bernice Cuthbertson and she died in 1949. On Aug. 20, 1960, he married Ida Meyer, who survives. His family was one of the early settlers of Hamlin Lake and he resided there all his life. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and attended St. Simon School. He was a member of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians. He was employed as a truck driver and drove for Strait Steel and Wire and the Foliage Co. and others. Surviving are four daughters, Mary (Lee) Christner of Ludington, Phyllis Howell of Charlotte, N.C., Constance Terrell of Shelby Twp. and Kathryn (William) Kraus of Ludington; two sons, Robert H. Campeau of Ludington and William M. (Janet) Campeau of Flint; numerous grand- and great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jill Marie; his parents, James and Eliza Campeau; two brothers, Benjamin and Morgan, and a sister, Hazel. Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Rev. Ken Schichtel, celebrant. Visitation was from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. June 28, at the Alexander Rye-Funeral Home. A scripture-wake service was held at 8 p.m. Burial was in North Victory cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Michigan or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Douglas Lee Budreau, 52 of 3823 N. Sherman Rd. passed away unexpectedly Wednesday October 13, 2004 upon arrival to Spectrum Hospital-Reed City. Douglas was born on April 5, 1952 in Ludington and married on June 15, 1984 to Naja Schwass who survives. He lived in Mason County all his life and was a 1970 graduate of Ludington High School, and he attended West Shore Community College. He enjoyed off road derby, dirt biking, running, and fixing anything that broke. He had been employed for the 30 years at Harsco Track Technologies as a Hydrolic Engineer.
Survivors include his wife Naja, 2 daughters, Heather (& Daniel) Haiss, of Germany, Mya Budreau, at home, 1 son Travis Budreau, also at home, 3 grandsons, Awston, Jayson, & McKensie, his parents, Jerry & Bunnie Budreau of Ludington, 1 brother Bob (& Beth) Budreau of Ludington, his mother in law, Dorothy Schwass of Ludington, 2 sisters in law Russelle (& Cliff) Albrecht of Scottville, and Paula (& Bill) Newkirk, of Sanford, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services for Douglas Lee Budreau will be on Saturday October 16, 2004 at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home at 11:00 AM with Rev. B. Douglas Niemi officiating. Burial will be in Center Riverton cemetery, and visitation will be on Friday October 15, 2004 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the funeral home. Leona Mae Johnson, 93 a recent resident of Ludington Woods passed away unexpectedly on Thursday October 7, 2004 at Ludington Woods Living Center. Leona Mae Bryant was born on April 28, 1911 in Alto, MI and married Valdemar Johnson in 1937, he preceded her in death in 2001. The couple retired in Ludington in 1970. Leona was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church of Ludington.
She is survived by her son Brian (& Sharon) Johnson of Peoria, AZ, her grandchildren Steven (& Nelda) Johnson, Suzanne Smith, Jason & James (& Tracey) Johnson all of AZ, Great grandchildren Devin, Kristen, Garrett, & Shane. She was preceded in death by 1 brother Leo Bryant.
Funeral services were held on Monday October 11 at 1:00 PM at the Emanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. William Collins officiating. Visitation was from 12:30 until the time of service at the Church. Burial followed in Lakeview cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Emanuel Lutheran Church with envelopes available at the Church or at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home.

Harold Robert Lange, 93 of Ludington entered into eternal rest on Friday October 1, 2004 at Tendercare of Ludington. He was born on September 12, 1911 in Ludington where he was a lifelong resident. On September 24, 1934 he married Sophie Zrolka, who preceded him in death on May 30, 2001 after 69 years of marriage. After his retirement from Pandrol Jackson in 1975, he and Sophie enjoyed state park camping, traveling, and spending time with family, grandchildren, & friends. They could be found at the boat docks many evenings watching the Badger come and go.
Harold was a dedicated lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served on the Board of Elders for many years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, & uncle who thouroughly enjoyed helping others.
Survivors include his daughter Susan Mann of Ludington, his son, Robert H.. (& Nancy) Lange of Surprise AZ, Grandchildren, Lt. Kellie Sue Courtland stationed in Honduras, Jay Courtland of Grand Rapids, and David Lange of Bonney Lake, WA, Great grandchildren, Devan, Brook & Ryan Courtland. Sisters, Esther Engblade of Ludington, and Gladys Porter of Newport, FL. "Until we meet again"
He was preceded in death in addition to his wife by 7 brothers, William, Paul, Herman, Raymond, Walter, Henry, & Arthur, 2 sisters Lillian Frovog & Minnie Wujek.
Funeral services were on Tuesday October 5, 2004 at 10:00 AM at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Boehne of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation was on Monday October 4, 2004 from 6-8 PM, and burial was in Pere Marquette cemetery. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution may consider Hospice of Michigan.

Elaine K. Collins, 86, went to meet her Lord and family on Sept. 25 at Oakview Medical Care Facility. Elaine will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandma and great-grandma to her family. She was born on June 19, 1918 to William and Hulda (Nordine) Lexen at the family farm in Victory Township. On July 19, 1941 she married Charles D. Collins, who preceded her in death on May 11, 1984. Elaine is survived by three children, David (Sandy) Collins, Judy (Dick) Husted, Janet (Kurt) Mathews; grandchildren, Zarin (Peter) Dobrzelewski, Jill (John) Gregorski, Robin (Keith) Lott, Katrina (Patrick) Genter, Eric Riggs and Laura Riggs; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Noah Dobrzelewski, Megan, Molly, Mary and Monika Gregorski, Sierra, Casey and Riley Rittenhouse, Zac and Ayden Genter. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Richard Collins on Feb. 5, 1951; a grandson, Ricky Husted on Jan. 2, 1978; and a sister, Alice Arndt. Elaine was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church (Washington Avenue Baptist) for 72 years. She was retired from Memorial Medical Center. Elaine touched the hearts of all she met and will be remembered with great love. Visitation at Alexander-Rye Funeral Home was from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today September 27, 2004. Services were at Cornerstone Baptist Church at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, with burial at South Victory cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Oakview Medical Care Facility or Cornerstone Baptist Church.

Agnes A. Nickelson, 86, of W. Hansen Road, Ludington, died Saturday morning, Sept. 18, at Tendercare, where she was a patient for a short time. She was born June 13, 1918. Agnes Hansen was born in Ludington, the daughter of Hans and Juliane Hansen. She was a graduate of Ludington High School, earned an AA degree from ECI, a Methodist college in Evanston, Ill., a bachelor's degree from Michigan State Normal College, master's degree from the University of Michigan, and studied folk dancing and the culture of Norway at the University of Oslo, which she attended in 1957, while her father visited his relatives after having emigrated from Norway in 1906. She taught physical education and social studies in Tecumseh and was an elementary physical education, classroom teacher and principal in Kalamazoo for 30 years before her marriage in 1974 to Howard Nickelson. Agnes had been a counselor and waterfront and crafts director at ArdenShore Ill., a camp for underprivileged mothers and children. She also worked several summers in Girl Scout camps and was playground supervisor at the USO in Wilmington, Ill. She was a lifeguard at the Ludington beach. She spent one summer in the Appalachians on a missionary trip with a church youth group. She was craft and waterfront director and assistant director of Pretty Lake Vacation Camp near Kalamazoo for two summers. She traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada, Alaska, the Holy Land, Europe, the Caribbean and Venezuela. She was privileged to have the opportunity to take graduate studies in Bible history and ancient history during a Campus at Sea cruise on the Mediterranean Sea. She enjoyed several hobbies: Reading, doing Norwegian embroidery, music and loved the out of doors. She spent many enjoyable hours in her woodworking shop, making Christmas decorations, children's furniture, toys and games. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, the UM Women and the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. In addition to her parents and husband, Howard Nickelson, she was predeceased by her sisters, Ruth, Vera and Thora; brothers, Hans, George and Russell; a grandson, Danny McDonald; a niece, Kimberly Pakulak; and a nephew, Nathan Kilgore. She is survived by her stepchildren, Howard (and Donna) Nickelson, Julie (and Dan) McDonald, Jeanie (and Larry) Anderson; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren (and three more on the way); her sister, Edna (and Wilbur) Nelson; many nieces and nephews; and her in-laws, William and Sylvia Nickelson, Archie and Ruth Paul, Albert Speer, Gladys Kilgore and Virginia Hansen. A funeral service took place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the United Methodist Church, the Rev. Norman Letsinger officiating. Burial followed at Lakeview cemetery. Visitation was from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today September 20, 2004 at Alexander-Rye Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church Building Fund or a charity of choice.

Garry L. Woodworth, 69, Scottville, passed away at home Sept. 13 after a lengthy illness. Garry was born Sept. 17, 1934 in Ludington to Isadore and Harriet (Marks) Jenks. His mother remarried when he was very young and at 8 years of age he was adopted by Rell Woodworth. Most of his childhood was spent in the Mason County area. Garry graduated from Ludington High School in 1952. He attended Western Michigan University until he was drafted in the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean Conflict from 1954-1956, when he was honorably discharged from Camp Hanford, Wash. Garry returned to Ludington, where he resumed his job with the C&O; Carferries, where he had been employed during the summers of high school and college. He married Barbara (Rasmussen) McMaster on March 15, 1975 at the United Methodist Church of Ludington. This year they celebrated 29 years of marriage. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ludington, Pere Marquette Masonic Lodge No. 299, where he was Worshipful Past Master. He was a member of the American Legion Post 76, the West Michigan Stroke Support Group and the CSXT retired employees group. Among Garry's favorite things to do were hunting, fishing, bowling, golfing, coaching little league ball games and traveling. Garry retired from CSXT, after a career of 43 years, with homes in Grand Rapids, Detroit, Baltimore, Md., and Jacksonville, Fla. In 1998 he and Barbara returned to Mason County, where they made their home. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Barbara; four sons, David (Lynn) Woodworth and Daniel Woodworth of Grand Rapids, Tom (Chris) McMaster and David (Cheryl) McMaster of Littlestown Pa.; three daughters, Shauna (Dan) Verbus of Abingdon, Md., Deborah Larson of Zeeland and Lisa (Jerome) Baldwin of Yelm, Wash.; 19 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister, Joyce Mannor of Grandville; half-sister, Charlene (Mike) Fisher of Cape Coral, Fla.; mother-in-law, Joan Rasmussen of Ludington; brothers-in-law, Bob (Connie) Rasmussen of Scottville and Randy (Debbie) Rasmussen of Ludington; stepbrothers, George (Judy) Pratt of Reed City, Richard (Judy) Pratt of Midland, Texas and Cathy (Joel) Smith of Troy. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Charles Pratt; his father-in-law, Leslie Rasmussen; and brother-in-law, Richard Mannor. Services will be held at the United Methodist Church of Ludington at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, the Rev. Ronald Houk officiating. Visitation was at Alexander-Rye Funeral Home, 309 S. Washington Ave., Ludington, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16. The Masonic Lodge held services at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment was in South Victory cemetery after the service. The American Legion Post 76 were be honor guards. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to donate to a charity may consider Hospice of Michigan, the West Michigan Stroke Support Group or the United Methodist Church, designating the building fund.

Bertha C. Nordine, 92, of 803 Diana Street, died unexpectedly Tuesday evening, Aug. 24, at Ludington Woods. Bertha Lexen was born Aug. 9, 1912 in Ludington where she was a lifelong resident. She graduated from Ludington High School and attended Michigan State University. On Dec. 4, 1945, she married Harold A. Nordine in Ludington, and he survives. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and the Women's Missionary Society and sewing circle of the church. Bertha loved sewing and quilting and made hundreds of quilts and lap robes for family and friends. She was employed by J.J. Newberry's in Ludington for many years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Ned Nordine and Curt (and DeAnne) Nordine of Ludington; two grandchildren, Caleb and Kayleigh Nordine of Ludington; one sister-in-law, Merna Nordine of Ludington, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, William, Martin and Bert Nordine; and a sister, Marie Dahlquist. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, August 27 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, the Dr. Dennis Nordine and the Dr. James Carlson officiating. Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Thursday August 26 at Alexander-Rye Funeral Home. Burial was in Lakeview cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Cornerstone Baptist Church building fund, with envelopes available at the funeral home or the church.

Juanita "Nita" Brockelbank, 70 of 408 N. Ferry St. passed away on Tuesday December 7, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center after a 2 year illness. Juanita Fetterley was born on October 11, 1934 in Big Rapids, and was previously married to Jack E. Brockelbank and he preceded her in death in 1998. She was a resident of Ludington for over 40 years. She graduated from High School in Big Rapids. Juanita was formerly an avid bowler, and had been employed by Giantway Supermarket as a meat wrapper. She also sold Avon since 1986.
Survivors include 1 daughter, Lisa Brockelbank & her partner Donice Hannegan of Ludington, 1 sister Gertrude Terwilliger of White Cloud, 1 brother Jack Fetterley of Big Rapids, 1 aunt, 5 nieces, and 1 nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents and 1 sister.
Memorial services will be held on Friday December 10 at 5:00 PM at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Houk officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 PM until the time of service. Nita's ashes will be interred at the columbarium at Lakeview cemetery.
