Earl R. Pleiness, 83 former longtime Scottville businessman, passed away on Friday March 18, 2005 at 10:40 PM at Memorial Medical Center after a one year illness. Earl was born on March 6, 1922 in Riverton Twp., and married on August 10, 1945 to Elizabeth Pitcher and she preceded him in death in 1993. He lived in Mason County all his life and was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church of Scottville. He graduated from Scottville High School and also Chicago Technical College where he received a degree in Architecture. Earl's hobby was farming, gardening and raising cattle. He owned and operated Pleiness Building Supply Co., in Scottville since 1972 until the business was sold in 2001.
Survivors include 1 daughter, Sheila (& Roger) Gowell of Shelby, 1 son, Kelvyn (& Maria) Pleiness of Scottville, 5 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jason, Jeremy Gowell, Jacob & Nathaniel Pleiness, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by 1 granddaughter Tammy DeMorrow, 1 brother Rellis "Bud" Pleiness and a niece Carol Pleiness.
Funeral services for Earl R. Pleiness were held on Tuesday March 22, 2005 at 11:00 AM at Our Savior Lutheran Church of Scottville with Rev. James Schroeder officiating. Visitation was from 6-8 PM Monday March 21, 2005 at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home and at the Church Tuesday March 22, 2005 from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will be in Center Riverton cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Our Savior Lutheran Church or the Riverton Fire Department with envelopes available at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home or the Church on Tuesday.

Ella Idona Marrison, 101 of Ludington died Saturday evening at Oakview Medical Care Facility. She was born July 15, 1904 at formerly the South County Line, Pentwater, MI to Richard Schmiedeknecht and Amie Wirt.
Ella attended Buck School and was married on May 28, 1927 to Edward E. Marrison and he preceded her in death on October 20, 1969. Ella was a housewife and before her health failed, she enjoyed crocheting, watching baseball and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She celebrated her 100th birthday on July 15, 2004 with a party at Oakview Medical Care Facility that was attended by many relatives and friends. She was a past member of the Rebeccas.
Ella is survived by 1 sister, Mrs. Lou Reed of Bristol, MI, 1 daughter in law, 2 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death in addition to her husband by 1 son Francis O. Marrison, 3 sisters and 1 great grandson.
Funeral services for Ella I. Marrison will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home with Rev. William Collins officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 until the time of service. Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.

Edgar S. Schneider, Ed "Tex" Schneider said his final good-bye on September 17, 2005. Ed was born May 15, 1921 in Detroit, MI to Peter and Elizabeth (Gross) Schneider. He attended Burton High School in Roseville, Michigan and graduated with the Ludington High School Class of 1946 following his military service overseas. Ed served in the 11th Armored Division of the United States Army under Gen. Patton's third Army from November 1942 until November 21, 1945. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in August of 1943 and was with Colonel Foy and his troops at the closing of the Belgium Gap at Houffalize, Belgium in January 1945.
On July 20, 1946 Ed married Rita Jean Peters at St Simon Catholic Church in Ludington, and she survives.
Ed excelled in everything he did. He began as a millwright after WWII and later returned to this profession until his retirement in 1985. In between, he was a car salesman for W.E. Stevenson and worked for Ebasco Engineering during the construction of the Ludington Pumped Storage Project, one of his most rewarding jobs.
In 1988, Ed was inducted into the Mason County Softball Hall of Fame as a former player, manager, and contributer.
Ed was adventurous, making his first trip to California hitchhiking and hopping trains at the age of 15. In 1942 he returned to California, following Route 66. His love for the back roads of travel, especially in the western states, never stopped. Ed and Rita always looked forward to getting "on theroad again"...
Ed was a life long member of the Edwin H. Ewing Post #76 American Legion, and he belonged to the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He was a faithful Toger's baseball follower.
In addition to his wife Rita, Ed is survived by six children, Janet (Richard) Schab, Alan (Cindy) Schneider, Mike (Sue) Schneider, Jean (Dennis) Mazur, Bill (Debbie) Schneider, and Marcia Boston. He leaves behind 14 grandchildren, Staci (Chad) Carter, Ben and Paul Schneider, Kraig, Kendall, and Courtney Schneider and Elyssa )Joe) Chmelar, David Gouin, Jeramy, Tommy, Brent, and Brooke Schneider, Sata and Amy Engfer. Ed also has four great grandchildren, Dylan, Braden, Kaitlyn, and Ashley, and another due in February 2006. Ed has one surviving brother, Jack (Ruby) Schneider, two sisters, June (John) Carney, and Freda Felan, two sisters-in-law, Virginia and Marilyn, numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Roy (his wife and 5 children), and brothers Daniel, Chester, Wayne, and Norman (& wife Ruth), and a grandson Roger Gouin, also brother in law, James Strahan.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday September 20, at 12:00 PM at St. Simon Catholic Church with Rev. Fr Ken Schichtel the Celebrant. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home from 9:30 until 11:30 AM. Burial will follow in Pere Marquette cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Simon's Education Fund, Pere Marquette cemetery Fund, or a charity of choice.

Charlotte R. Fisher, 85, of Ludington, died Tuesday Sept. 13, at Oakview Medical Care Facility after an extended illness. Charlotte was born on August 13, 1920 in Virginia, MN, to Ralph and Mathilda Brooks. She graduated from Kingsford High School in 1939 in Kingsford, MI. She was married on June 10, 1940 to Matthew E. Fisher. She was preceded in death by her husband on November 12, 1971, one son Thomas Matthew, sisters Geradine Osterburg and Elaine Hanneman, brother Jarvis Brooks, and her parents.
Charlotte worked as a telephone operator for General Telephone, at Epworth Heights, at the Ludington Community Church, and was a beloved mother, grandmother, and homemaker. Charlotte was a lifelong member of the Community Church and served on the Christian Women's Fellowship, Mary Martha Circle, and Candlelight Circle. She loved music and was a member of her Church Choir and the Ludington Melodiers. She was a long time member of the Royal Neighbors of America, Chapter 632. For many years she was a leader with the Girl Scouts of America. Charlotte did many hours of volunteer service at both nursing homes and was well known for doing monthly birthday parties at Oakview Medical Care Facility. She also worked for Unicef and March Of Dimes. Charlotte enjoyed bowling, golf, camping, dancing, and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by daughters, Kaye (Mike) Ricklefs, and Cheri (Irving) Welch both of Ludington, Sons, Gene (Marj) Brooks-Fisher of Grand Haven and Jerry (Shelly) Fisher of Ludington, grandchildren, Michelle (Steve) Allard of Grand Rapids, Sharon Welch, Richard Fisher, Annie Welch, Sarah Fisher, and great- grandchildren, Ian and Inez Allard, and Isabella Gillis.
Visitation was on Friday September 16 at 9:30 AM followed by the funeral servive at 11:00 AM with Rev. Norman Letsinger officiating. A light lunch was served at the Community Church following the service. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked tp consider the Mason County Alzheimers Association or Oakview Medical Care Facility.

Willow Harmon, 84 passed away peacefully in her home in Dunedin, FL on Sept. 4, 2005 after an extended illness. She was surrounded by her dear friends Peggy Fagan and David Van Duyne.
Willow was born August 24, 1921 in Reed City, the daughter of Homer and Marguerite Holsted. She graduated from Reed City High School and attended cosmotology school. She owned and operated her own Salon in Kalamazoo for 32 years.
She married Elliott Harmon on June 5, 1940 in Ludington, he preceded her in death in 1988. They lived in Ludington for several years before moving to Kalamazoo and retired to Florida.
Willow was also preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Grace, and brothers Walter and John.
Survivors include her nephews and nieces, Pardner (& Eilish) Harmon, Ben Harmon, Erika (& Chris) Etchison, Kris Harmon and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Friday 11:00 AM at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home with Rev. William Collins officiating. Visitation was one hour before the service. Burial was be in Lakeview cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Pinellas Co., FL with envelopes available at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home.

N. Jane Rister, 85, of Bay City and formerly of Ludington, died Thursday afternoon, Sept. 1 at Heartland Hampton Nursing Home after an extended illness. She was born March 11, 1920 in Ludington. She was married to Al Rister, and he preceded her in death in 1997. She was a former member of St. Simon Catholic Church and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Custer VFW Gold Bar Post 5096. She was a veteran of W.W. II, having served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1944. Jane Rister is survived by one daughter, Sherry Rister of Bay City; one son, Chuck (Theresa) Rister of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Charles 'Bud' Hoglund of Ludington; many nieces, nephews and cousins in Ohio, Wisconsin and Michigan. A family service will be held at Lakeview cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the donor's charity of choice. Alexander-Rye Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

Harold K. Hill, 94 died peacefully August 31 at Oakcrest Manor in Spring lake where he'd moved six years ago to be near his family. He was born June 5, 1911 in Ludington to Kleber & Blanche (Genson) Hill, living most of his life in this area. He graduated from Ludington High School in 1928 near the top of his calss, and in his teens was helping to support his family. In 1936 he married Gertrude Shoup; they enjoyed 50 years together.
Harold worked for the US government for 44 years, beginning in the Weather Bureau in Ludington. This was followed by one winter in a logging camp in northern Minnesota during the Depression. Most of his career was in the Ludington Post Office from which he retired as assistant postmaster in 1973. Harold served in a number of community and church offices. The Chancel Choir of Community Church was close to his heart, and he sang in it for 62 years. He enjoyed golfing at Lincoln Hills into his late eighties, as he did bicycling. He was both a student of and a resource expert on Great Lakes and area history, his Genson ancestors having been among the first settlers of Sherman Township in the 1830's.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1986 and by two sisters, leona Peterson of Flint and Lois Conn of Peoria, IL. Survivors include a sister Frances Thurkettle (Erwin) of Muskegon, a daughter, Barbara McKenzie (John) of Kalamazoo, and a son Stephen (Karen) Hill of Muskegon, six grandchildren, John McKenzie of Battle Creek, Sarah McKenzie of Kalamazoo, Andrew Hill of Dracut, Mass, Mark Hill of Muskegon, Kim Carnevale of Grand Rapids, and Brent Bedau of Paw Paw, eleven great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He enjoyed the deep respect and admiration of these next generations for whom he set a high standard in lifelong exploration and learning.
Funeral services for Harold Hill were held at 1:00 PM Friday at the Community Church, the rev. William Collins officiating. The family met friends at the church prior to the service, beginning at 11:30 AM. Memorial Contributions in his name may be directed to the music program of the church, the Mason County Historical Society, or to Hospice of Michigan. Alexander-Rye Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James L. Goulet, 81 of Ludington passed away suddenly on Tuesday morning at Memorial Medical Center. He was born March 31, 1924 in Ludington and married on November 11, 1955 to Shirley Collard who preceded him in death on January 23, 2002.
James was a lifelong resident of Ludington and a devoted member of St. Simon Catholic Church. He graduated from St. Simon High School and attended Notre Dame University. He was a mamber of the Dear Brothers Association, Ludington Elks Lodge # 736, Ludington Male Chorus, St. Simons Choir, and was an avid golfer. He was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII.
Jim Owned Ludington Photo Center for over 50 years.
He is survived by his children, Douglas (& Donna) Goulet of Lansing, James L. (& Pam) Goulet of Kent, WA, Gregory (& Alice) Goulet of Holland, David Goulet of Federal Way, WA, and Annette (& Darryl) Wojtaszak of Comstock Park, 13 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 8 brothers, George, John, Lee, Leo, Joey, Robert Goulet, and Mike Brooks, 2 sisters, Phoebe Goulet & Maryanne Goulet, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister Barbara McDonald.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday at 10:30 AM at St. Simon Catholic Church with Rev Fr Ken Schichtel the Celebrant. Visitation was on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Alexander-Rye Funeral Home. A scripture and wake service was held at 7:30 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to St. Simon Youth Center Building in lieu of flowers with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Mary Frances Atherton, 79 of Ludington passed away Monday August 15 at Tendercare of Ludington after an extended illness. "Fran"Beyers was born June 27, 1926 in Highland Park, and married to Harold "Denny" Atherton who preceded her in death on November 7, 1998. Fran received a license to pilot the Tugboat "Annie", and had formerly owned & operated a ceramic shop on S. Washington Ave. for many years.
Survivors include a sister Barbara White of Prudenville, a niece Barbara Smertzki of Prudenville, and nephew John White of South Lyon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
There will be no visitation or services. Cremation has taken place.
Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice with envelopes available at Alexander-Rye Funeral Home.

Arthur J. Lister, 78, of Ludington, passed away Friday afternoon, Aug. 12 at home in the loving care of his family. Art was born Dec. 6, 1926 in Ludington, to John and Frances Lister. He graduated as the valedictorian of St. Simon High School in 1944. Art married Ethel Peterson on Feb. 28, 1953 at Bethany Lutheran Church and they celebrated 52 years together. Art enjoyed a lifetime of farming as owner of Lister Orchards, Inc., growing apples, cherries, peaches, pears and plums. He began farming with his dad, and was delighted to have his son, Arthur Lister Jr. join him in the business. Art was active in numerous fruit organizations, and was particularly honored to serve as president of the Michigan State Horticultural Society and as President Clinton's appointee as a state committee member of the Farm Service Agency. Art embraced new farming innovations, and Lister Orchards was one of the first in the state to use drip irrigation on fruit trees. His great interest in new fruit varieties led to his being one of the first farmers in Michigan to grow cling peaches. Art worked extensively with Michigan State University and received the Distinguished Service Award from MSU's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. He was also thrilled to have all three children graduate from MSU. His long-term association with Gerber Baby Food led to Art's selection as the 'Gerber Grandpa' in the commercials they filmed on the farm and other Mason County locations in 2000. He thoroughly enjoyed participating in those commercials, as well as hearing from friends and relatives who saw him on TV. Art was a lifelong Democrat and served as chairman of the Mason County Democratic Party from 1961 to 1966. He was the Democratic candidate for 98th District State Representative in 1970. Aside from his lifelong passion for farming, Art was an avid traveler, reader and crossword buff. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.
Art will be greatly missed by his wife, Ethel; his daughters, Janet Murphy of Battle Creek and Dr. Karen Lister (Dr. John Link) of Chesterfield, Mo.; his son, Art (Sheri) of Ludington; his sister, Marilyn Duggan of Whitefish Bay, Wisc.; brother-in-law, Donald Hesling of Muskegon; sisters-in-law, Ann (Bob) Conrad of Scottville and Adeline Ehler of Ludington; grandchildren, Alison Murphy, Brian Murphy, John Lister, Joe Lister, Chelsea Lister and Katie Link; stepsister, Betty Lundquist of Scottville; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation was from 6-8:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19 at Alexander-Rye Funeral Home in Ludington. A shorter visitation was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20 at Bethany Lutheran Church followed by an 11 a.m. memorial service with the Rev. Dennis Remenschneider officiating. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Bethany Lutheran Church, Hospice of Michigan, or a charity of one's choice.
