Mabel East Powell

Mabel C. East Powell, 84, of Port Huron, died Wednesday, September 14, 2005 in Medi Lodge of St. Clair following an extended illness.

She was born April 30, 1921 in Fort Gratiot and was a lifelong resident.

She married George R. East. He died in 1949. She married Harold R. Powell. He died in 1979.

Mabel was a 1939 graduate of St. Stephen High School. She retired from the St. Clair County Clerk's office. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother.

She is survived by her son, Donald J. (Joanne) East of Algonac; daughter, Barbara E. (William) Duckworth of Kimball; grandsons, Jeffrey (Renee) East of Farmington Hills, Michael (Deanna) East of Saginaw and Scott Mikula of Port Huron; her granddaughters, Stacy (Scott) Thompson of Fort Gratiot and Kim (Jim) Plutter of Algonac; eight greatgrandchildren; and her sister, Elizabeth Kashubosky of Marysville.

She was preceded in death by her son, Richard G. East on June 3, 1970.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday in KarrerSimpson Funeral Home. The Rev. C. Paul Higdon will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at KarrerSimpson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation.

Raymond Miller

Raymond John Miller, 83, of Port Huron, MI, passed away Monday, September 19, 2005, at Port Huron Mercy Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

He was born to William and Anna Victoria Miller on August 7, 1922 in Port Huron, MI, the fourth oldest of nine children.

As a youngster during the Depression, he sold newspapers by Van Haften Drug Store (Newman Center) and changed the movie marquis at Family Theatre.

On June 22, 1942, he enlisted in the US Navy. Raymond served as an armed guard during World War II on Navy Merchant ship convoys in the Atlantic, later transferred to service in the Pacific, and was honorably discharged in October 1946 after serving at Bikini Atoll. He was recognized with the American Area Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, Europe Africa MidEast Area Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon.

He received his diploma from St. Stephen High School in June 1945.

He returned to work at Chrysler Manufacturing in Marysville, and during the 100day strike in the 1950s, enrolled in a heating/cooling course in Chicago. Unable to secure work in the industry, he drove west to Seattle to join his older brother, Wilbert, who worked at Boeing. En route, he stopped in Burlington, IA, and spent time with his oldest brother, Charles, a chiropractor. Plans changed; he enrolled at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, IA, in 1956 and graduated in 1960.

While there, he met Catherine L. Bourgeois of Gardner, MA, and married her on September 10, 1960, in Davenport, IA. They had one daughter, Lorraine.

In 1962, they moved to Bad Axe, Michigan, opened Miller Chiropractic Clinic and practiced together until they officially retired in 2000. Their practice received recognition for community service.

Raymond was active in the Knights of Columbus in Bad Axe, MI and as an usher with St. Stephen Catholic Church in Port Huron, MI. He was a faithful member of the St. Stephen Athletic Club. He also served at president of Toastmasters while at Palmer College. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, softball and watching the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings and Lions. He enjoyed the company of his brothers and sisters and spent many hours playing cards together at family gatherings.

He is survived by his daughter, Lorraine A. Miller of Chicago, IL; his sister, Joan Gaffigan of Port Huron, MI; his brother, Leonard Miller of Port Huron, MI; his sister and brotherinlaw, Barbara and Marvin Lubbert of Fort Gratiot, MI and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Bourgeois Miller in 2002; his parents; his sister Rosemary Sloan; and his brothers Charles, Wilbert, Harold and Gerald.

Visitation hours will be Thursday, September 22, 2005 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at KarrerSimpson Funeral Home, with an evening Rosary at 7 p.m.

A brief visitation at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2005 will precede the funeral service at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen Church, 325 32nd Street. Fr. Donald Eppenbrock, Raymond's cousin, will officiate.

Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Memorial may be made to the Council on Aging of Port Huron, Blue Water Hospice and St. Stephen Catholic Church.

Charles Johnson

Charles E. 'Sonny Boy' Johnson, 68 of Port Huron, passed away Friday, October 21, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital. He was born to Willie and Louise Johnson on August 30, 1937 in Port Huron, graduated from Port Huron High School in 1955, and attended Port Huron Jr. College. He married Addie Akridge on July 11, 1959.

Charles retired from General Motors in 1991 after over 30 years of service. He was a member of Interfaith Community Church and served as treasurer of the Steward Board. He was a member of Central Star Lodge 23 F & AM PHA, umpired high school baseball, worked as a timekeeper during Silver Stick hockey tournaments, and assisted senior citizens and the disabled.

Charles is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Addie Johnson; three sons, James Johnson, Charles Raleigh (Melinda) Johnson, & Benjamin Johnson, all of Port Huron; two foster daughters, Joyce Ann Hayes of Miami, FL and Bernice Moncrief of Port Huron; son-in-law, Lonnie Thomas of Port Huron; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three brothers, James (Ruth) Johnson & Willie Johnson, both of Richmond, VA and John (Janice) Johnson of Port Huron; two brothers-in-law, Frank (Doris) Patrick of McKeesport, PA & William (Donna) Daniels of Rochester, MI; his mother-in-law, Hazel Patrick of Port Huron, and a host of nieces & nephews.

Preceding Charles in death were two children, Todd Johnson and Wendy Thomas, and a brother, David 'Sugar Pie' Johnson.

The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 31, 2005 in Interfaith Community Church. Pastor Link Howard will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery under the direction of Central Star Lodge #23 F & AM PHA. Visitation will be in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. on Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Moncrief, Jesse and Larry Gunter, Dwayne Cureton, Dave Pojeky, Johnny Walker Jr., Darryl Fye, Ron Searles, & Darcy Hayes. Honorary Pallbearers will be member of Central Star Lodge #23 F & AM PHA. Contributions may be made in Charles's memory to the Martha Rucker Education Scholarship Fund of the church.

William Taylor

William P. Taylor, 73, of Port Huron, passed away Monday, June 9, 2003.

He was born to William and Melissa Jane Taylor on Dec. 15, 1929 in Port Huron, and married Rosemary Campbell on April 15, 1970 in Port Huron.

Bill served in the U.S. Navy, loved to travel, enjoyed woodworking and was a history buff. He was proud to be Native American and a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Rosemary J. Taylor; his son, Gregory Taylor of Anderson, IN; his grandson, William P. Taylor II of Columbia, SC; three sisters, Mary "Joann" (Thomas) O'Brien of Marysville, Rita Jane (Robert) White of Hudson, Wisconsin and Margaret Ann (Robert) Gibbs of Port Huron; his brother, James (Reta) Taylor of Port Huron; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. from 3 to 9 p.m. today. The Rosary will be recited in the funeral home at 4 p.m.

The family will gather for a committal service in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Bill's memory to Cornerstone Church for the Calvary Chapel Mission in Olongope, Philippines.

Sandra Kenney

Sandra "Diane" Kenney, 57, of Port Huron Twp., died Saturday, July 30, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital after a short illness.

She was born January 23, 1948 in Chattanooga, Tennessee and lived in the Blue Water area since 1978.

She married Paul J. Kenney on June 28, 1975 in Detroit.

She is survived by her husband, Paul J. Kenney of Port Huron Twp.; her son, Michael David Harrison of Maryland; her daughters, Tammra A. (Curtis) McAllister of Lake Orion, Christa D. (Steve) Fillbeck of Chesterfield Twp. and Taresa D. (Daniel) Doughty of Clinton Twp.; her son, Matthew W. (Rachael) Kenney of Port Huron; ten grandchildren; her mother, Myrtle Harris of Emmett; and her brother, Frank Harris of Emmett.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in KarrerSimpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Max Amstutz, Port Huron Hospital Chaplain, will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Matthew, Curtis, Daniel, Michael, David and Steve.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Joan Harris

Mrs. Joan Elizabeth Harris, 78, of Port Huron, died Monday, July 21, 2003.

She was born February 2, 1925 in Port Huron to the late Orrie and Nina Ewart.

She married John Arthur Harris on June 25, 1949 in Port Huron.

Mrs. Harris retired from the St. Clair County Administrator's office as a payroll clerk in 1986 after 43 years of service. She was a member of St. Clair County Retirees Assoc. and enjoyed shopping and traveling.

She is survived by her husband, John; a daughter, Diane Peabody of Port Huron; two grandchildren, David Peabody of Fort Gratiot Township and Melissa Peabody of Port Huron Township; a sister, Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Elaine) Redford of Marysville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Gayle Loxton.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2003 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Reverend Gary Montgomery of First Baptist Church, St. Clair will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery, Port Huron. Pallbearers will be Brendan Vani, David Koester, Jim Haynes, Derek Buhl, Rick Loxton and Frank Harris.

Evelyn G. Bennett

Evelyn G. Bennett, 80, of Port Huron died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, in the Evangelical Home.

She was born July 18, 1921, in Pennsylvania.

She married Ralph W. Bennett. He died April 19, 1999.

She is survived by seven brothers and sisters.

Cremation has taken place. No services or visitation are scheduled.

Inurnment will be in Lakeside cemetery.

Arrangements were made by Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Beulah Bankson

Beulah M. Bankson, age 91, of Fort Gratiot, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005 in Mercy Hospital, following a short illness.

She was born Dec. 31, 1913 in Greenwood Twp. and was a life long area resident.

She married William M. Newell Bankson. He died April 14, 1990.

Beulah attended Griswold Street Baptist Church. She loved to play games and was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her daughters, Joyce E. (Harold) Thompson of Flint and MaryAnn E. (Harold) Clinton of Houston, TX; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Bankson; sisters, Thelma Wright and Marion Gottsleben; and brothers, Carl, Glen and William Gottsleben.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel T. Stewart of Griswold Street Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Springhill cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials are requested to Griswold Street Baptist Church Missions.

Raymond Eagle

Raymond "Moe" Leroy Eagle, 47, of Port Huron Twp., died Saturday, July 5, 2003 in Mercy Hospital after a long courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Aug. 22, 1955 in Port Huron to Raymond and Myrtle Eagle and was a lifelong area resident.

He married Roberta "Robin" Lashbrook Aug. 23, 1975 in Port Huron.

Mr. Eagle retired on Nov. 1, 1999 after 25 years of service from New Haven Foundry. He enjoyed playing the lottery and going to casinos. He was a dedicated husband, daddy and papa.

He is survived by his wife, Robin; two daughters, Roberta "Byrd" and Craig Collinge of Port Huron and Brenda and David Thompson of Kimball; one son, Raymond "Moe" Eagle II and Kelly Wawrzniak of Port Huron; four grandchildren, Kyle, Camrynn, Brittany and Matthew; his mother, Myrtle Eagle; five brothers, Dave and Janet VanCamp, Bob and Sharon Eagle, Steve and Sharon Eagle and Joe Eagle, all of Port Huron and Mike Eagle of Kimball Twp.; two sisters, Linda Eagle of Port Huron and Paul and Rose Caris of Lapeer; his mother-in-law, Arleen Lashbrook; five brothers-in-law, Glen, Mike and Tim Lashbrook, Jim and Robin Lashbrook and Dan and Teresa Lashbrook; one sister-in-law, Evonne and Bill Vertigan; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Dave Young and Ed Panczyk.

Mr. Eagle was preceded in death by his father, Raymond; his father-in-law, Glen Lashbrook; and two sisters-in-law, Kathy Eagle and Karen Lashbrook.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. Pastor Bernie Long of Sparlingville Wesleyan Church will officiate.
