Thomas J. Manis

Thomas J. Manis, 85, of Port Huron, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 17, 2001.

He was born March 22, 1916 in Sarnia, Ontario to John and Mary A (Soulias) Man-is, who emigrated from Greece in 1914. He was a lifelong area resident of Port Huron. He married Eras Kouros on July 27, 1952 in Detroit.

Mr. Manis was a World War 11 U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and receiving two bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Philippines Presidential Unit Citation Badge.

Upon returning to Port Huron after the war, he owned and operated the Edgewater Inn and the Town Bar before opening the Tom Manis Restaurant on the corner of 10th and Union streets. He worked hard making his restaurant a success and enjoyed serving and getting to know his customers.

He was a 50-year member of Charles Hammond Post #8 American Legion. He also belonged to Charles Schoor Post #796 VFW., Moose Lodge #158, and was a Life Member of Elks Lodge #343 B.P.O.E. He was secretary of the Table Top Club. His hobbies were bowling and fishing.

He is survived by his wife-, two daughters, Elaine (Terry) Roberts of Lakeport and Mitzi (Joseph) Doenges of Fort Wayne, Indiana-, a son, Thomas P. (Jana) Manis of Port Huron; four grandchildren who loved their

Papou very much, Christian Joseph Doenges, Brianna Yvette Manis, Nathan Thomas Manis and Jacques Brett, Maims; a sister, Lou Lekas of Fort Pierce, Fla.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a precious son, John Thomas Manis in 1956; a sister, Suzanne Bladis and a brother, Constantine "Gus" Manis.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2001, and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home, Port Huron. A Trisagion service will be celebrated by Father Karas at 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001 in Grace Episcopal Church, Port Huron. Father Andrew Karas of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church will officiate, The Reverend Gary Aupperle of Colonial Woods Missionary Church will assist.

Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery, Port Huron. Graveside military honors will be done under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the American Red Cross, Quota Club, or New Life Christian Academy Development Fund.

James M. Miller

James M. Miller, 66, of Port Huron died Sunday, March 18, 2001, in his home.

He was born Aug. 1, 1934 in Port Huron and was a lifelong area resident.

He married Mary Lou Burlow on March 25, 1961, in Port Huron. She died Sept. 20, 1995.

Mr. Miller was a member of Laborer's Local 463. He served in the US. Air Force and was a member of Charles Schoor VFW Post 796 and Blue Water Aerie 3702 Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He is survived by a son, Tim Porter, and fiancé Kathleen Baird; a daughter, Susan A. Miller; a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Porter; two brothers, Mr. and Mrs. William (Ann) Miller of Salt Lake City and Robert Miller of Port Huron; a sister, Margaret Day of Port Huron; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy James Porter.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in the Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Pollock-Randall Funeral Home The Rev. Phyllis I. Hormann of St. Martin Lutheran Church will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the Leader Dogs for the Blind or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Georgene Miller

Georgene E. Miller, 87 of Port Huron, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 23, 2003. She was born November 19, 1915 in Cleveland, OH, and married Earl Francis Miller in Port Huron, MI.

Georgene enjoyed reading, crossword books, playing cards, bingo, Ohio State University football, going out to dinner with her family, and her playmate, Jordan. She was also a member of the Charles Hammond Post #8 American Legion Auxiliary for 24 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda G. Almanza; three grandchildren, Lisa G. Fowler, Nicole Lynn (Tim) Starks, Joseph Earl Almanza; two great grandchildren, Cory A. Fowler and Mark W. Fowler Jr; and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Francis Miller and her sister, Lillian E. Redford.

Cremation has taken place. A service in Georgene's memory will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2003 in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. The Rev. Fr. Simeon Iber will officiate. Contributions may be made in her memory to the wishes of her family.

Betty J. Robinson

Betty Jane Robinson, 79, of Port Huron was led by the light and returned home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002.

She was born Jan. 20, 1923, in Port Huron and was a lifelong resident.

She married Gerald J. Robinson. He died Feb. 8, 1993, after 52 years of marriage.

She retired from the Port Huron Area School District.

She loved her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandi and Jack Gordan of Henderson, Nev.; her daughter, the Rev. LuAnn Torri Robinson of Beverly Hills; her sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas G. and Linda Robinson of Port Huron and Jerry J. and Maryan Robinson of Kansas City, Mo.; three granddaughters; four grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

A private service for family and close friends will be officiated by the Rev. LuAnn Torri Robinson.

Memorials may be made to Blue Water Hospice.

Cremation arrangements are by Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave., at 17th Street.

Edith Burns

Edith A. "Edie" Burns, age 60, of Walterboro, South Carolina, formerly of Port Huron, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003.

She was born Aug. 20, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Edie married Darrel Burns on Sept. 9, 1960 at Vandenburg Air Force Base in California.

She was a former member of the First Congregational Church in Port Huron and a former employee of the Michigan Employment Security Commission and South Carolina Employment Security Commission.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Darrel J. Burns of South Carolina; son and daughter-in-law, LCDR Casey and Heather Burns of New Hampshire; her daughter and son-in-law, Karey and Ernie Bright of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Lisa Burns of Virginia; one grandson, Mason Bright; her mother and step-father, Virginia and William Brehl of Austin, Texas; her sister, Nancy Stager of Algonac; her twin sister and brother-in-law, Ethel (Sam) Sullivan of Fort Gratiot; her sister and brother-in-law, Linda and James Beno of Petosky; her brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Maryann Schlueter of Fort Gratiot; her brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Michelle Schlueter of Michigan; her sister-in-law, Irene Chilson of South Dakota; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gerhard Schlueter who died earlier.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the First Congregational Church, 723 Court St., Port Huron. The Rev. Reed C. Benedict will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery.

Visiting hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St.

Memorial tributes may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.

Gertrude B. Rostoni

Gertrude B. "Trudi" Rostoni, 80, of Fort Gratiot Township passed away Saturday, April 7, 2001, in her residence.

She was born to Montique and Elizabeth Delaney on July 15, 1920, in Mount Clemens.

On Nov. 22, 1942, she married Lennard C. Rostoni in Detroit. He passed away on June 9 1988.

Trudi was a parishioner at St. Edward's On-the-Lake Catholic Church and was also an active supporter of North Lakeport Wesleyan Church.

She did volunteer work for the American Red Cross for many Years and was a longtime member Of Port Huron Lodge 343 BPOE.

She was very loving and caring, and enjoyed dancing, bird watching and animals.

She is survived by her two sons, Ronald L. (Karen L.) Rostoni of Lexington and Kenneth L. (Martha I Rostoni of Blaine; seven grandchildren, Craig (Michelle) Rostoni of Burtchville Township, Kimberly (Chuck) Neubert of Melvin, Robert Rostoni of Nyack, N.Y., Jeffrey (Nancy) Rostoni of Haslett, Jennifer (Bret) Armstrong of Redford and Derrick and Scott Goodman, both of Port Huron; nine great-grandchildren, Ryan, Samantha, Alexandra, Maria, April, Charles, Taylor, Alyssa and Patrick; and her beloved sister-in-law, Lou Rostoni of Fort Gratiot Township.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Delaney.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in St. Edwards On-the-Lake Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Esper, pastor of St. Edward's On-the-Lake Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeport cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. A scriptural wake service will begin at 8:30 p.m. On Wednesday, visitation will begin at 9 a.m. in the church.

Pallbearers will be Ronald, Kenneth, Jeffrey, Craig and Robert Rostoni and, Chuck Neubert.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Trudi's memory to St. Edward's On-the-Lake Catholic Church or North Lakeport Wesleyan Church.

Raymond G. Smith

Raymond G. Smith, 75, of Port Huron, died April 17, 2001 in Marwood Manor after a long illness. He was born October 25, 1925 in Port Huron and has been a lifelong area resident.

Raymond retired from Earl Smith Distributing on January 20, 1995 after 51 years of service. He enjoyed boating and traveling to Grand Bend & Niagara Falls, Ontario on family vacations. Raymond was a loving uncle and thoroughly enjoyed life and being with his family.

He is survived by a sister, Margaret M. Moore of Port Huron; sister-in-law, Catherine Smith of Fort Gratiot; a nephew, Robert E. (Linda) Smith of Port Huron; nieces, Kathleen M. (Larry) Smith of Fort Gratiot and Elizabeth A. (David) Wellman of St. Clair; several great nieces and nephews; and good friend, Joseph D. McCarthy, Jr. of Fort Gratiot.

Raymond was preceded in death by his brother, Robert A. Smith and a niece, Deborah A. (Smith) Sari

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 20, 2001, in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Stanley A. Wyczawski, Pastor of St. Mary Church, will officiate.

Entombment will be in Lakeside cemetery Mausoleum.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be David Wellman, Larry and Erik Smith, Matt Sari and - Justin and Robert Smith.

Memorials may be made to Marwood Manor.

Gerald W. Sullivan

Gerald W. Sullivan, age 56, of Kimball Township, died March 31, 2001 in Mercy Hospital after a long illness. He was born July 23, 1944 in Wales Township, and was a life long area resident.

He married Betty Koebke on October 4, 1969 in Goodells. Gerald worked for the Pontiac Motors Foundry Department, was a member of the UAW, and was an avid bowler. He is survived by his wife Betty, son Jerry Sullivan, daughter Karen (Mike) Basnaw, grandsons, Alan Rapson and Tyler Basnaw, all of Kimball Township. He is also survived by nine brothers, Richard, Charlie, Harry, Carl, Ervin, Darrell, George, William, and Robert Sullivan, and four sisters, Violet Watson, Jane Siler, Isabelle Kotzke, and Imogene Mosher, mother-in-law, Beatrice Koebke, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Irene Sullivan, sister Betty Lou Sullivan, and a brother, Tom Sullivan. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in the Smith Family Funeral Home - South, 1230 7th Street. The Rev. Scott Babin of Sparlingville Wesleyan Church will officiate.

Burial will take place under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council in Lambs cemetery. His nephews will serve as pallbearers. Friends may visit at the funeral home Sunday and Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.

Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family.

Verna G. Maddy

Verna G. Maddy, 83, of Port Huron Went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 10, 2001.

She was born Feb. 4, 1918, in Clayton, W Va., to the late William and Lula Parker Aliff.

Mrs. Maddy was employed as a bookkeeper with A&P for 23 years and was a very devoted wife, mother and Grandmother

She was a member of Community Bible Fellowship Church.

She loved flowers, gardening, cooking, canning and decorating the house for Christmas.

She is survived by two daughters, the Rev. and Mrs. Malcolm (Edith) Lavender of Port Huron and Wanda Hudson of Concord, N.C.; and two grandsons, Mr. and Mrs. Terry (Pamela) Lavender and the Rev. and Mrs. R us, t y (Candis) Lavender.

In addition, she is survived by three great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; eight brothers and sisters; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, and two brothers.

Visitation is 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday April 13, 2001, in the Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, in the Pollock-Randall Funeral Horne. Her son-in-law, the Rev. Malcolm Lavender, will officiate assisted by her grandson, the Rev. Rusty Lavender

Burial will be in Memorial Gardens cemetery, Mount Pleasant.
