Theodore DeCourval

Theodore "Ted" DeCourval, 75, of Port Huron Township went to Heaven unexpectedly Sunday morning, Nov. 3, 2002.

Ted was born Feb. 2, 1927, in Flint to the late Theodore and Sarah DeCourval.

He married Carmen Casado on Dec. 13, 1952, in Flint.

Ted served in the U.S. Army as a surgical technician at the end of World War II. He received the World War II Victory and American Theatre medals in 1945.

He owned C&B Enterprises of Marine City for many years. He retired in 1997.

Ted was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge 343. He was a past member, president and board member of Black River Country Club, and also a member of Michigan's Past Presidents Association. He was a member of the Michigan Plumbers Union as a master plumber for many years.

He was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter and thoroughly enjoyed the out-of-doors.

Ted was a graduate of Flint Central High School where he was an All State champion in football, track and swimming and held the state championship record in pole vaulting. He continued his education at the University of Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence.

Ted is survived by his most beloved bride of 49 years, Carman, and his son and best friend, Louie. His son Louie and fiancee, Suzy Hilton, live in Burtonsville, Md.

Ted is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, James (Norda Mae) Little of Bradenton, Fla.; a very special niece and nephew, Brian and Ellie Bailey of Ruby; brother-in-law, Casey and Mary Casado of Barbeau; and several cousins, nieces and nephews, along with an abundance of many close friends.

Graveside services will take place at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, in Mount Hope cemetery in Port Huron. The St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council will provide military honors.

Memorial services will immediately follow at the Port Huron Elks Club.

Memorials may be made to the Port Huron Elks Memorial Fund.

Cremation arrangements are by Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave., at 17th Avenue.

Sherry Clark

A loving, strong and energetic soul has completed her earthly journey. Sherry was liberated from her earthy woes and united with our Lord on Nov. 18, 2002.

Her dignity and optimism, along with her strength and courage, has been an example and inspiration for her family and friends. We will all miss her immensely.

Sherry leaves behind a loving family, which made her very proud. On Jan. 12, 1980, Sherry married her devoted husband, and best friend, John Clarke. She has three fine sons, Mark (Michelle) Koester, David (Kim) Koester and Darrin (Kimberly) Koester. Sherry also was fortunate to be stepmother to Vicky Bailey and Kelly Clarke. Sherry loved being a grandma, "It's the best job on Earth!" She was blessed with eight grandchildren who filled her heart with joy and her life with amusement: Matthew, Colin, Kaity, Mariah, Megan, Mason, Emma and Cole.

These grandchildren will dearly miss her.

She will be fondly remembered and missed by her siblings, Marilynn (Bill) VanDePoel, Carolynn (Jim) Sleiff, Pat Hampton (the late Bill Hampton), Mike (Michelle) McLaughlin and Lee McLaughlin; along with several very special nieces and nephews.

Sherry was preceded in death and has been reunited with her parents, Harold and Corrine McLaughlin; and brother, Chuck McLaughlin.

Sherry's first passion was being a devoted wife and dedicated mother and grandmother. Sherry loved to work with her hands in the garden and have the grandchildren over for "Happy" Wednesdays." She opened her pool to all who knew her and loved to entertain.

She enjoyed cutting hair and working with her dear friends at several restaurants, including the Thomas Edison Inn.

In her ever-organized fashion, Sherry has requested her family and friends gather for a celebration of her life Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, in Hillside Wesleyan Church with Pastor Steve Johnson presiding. Visitation with the family will begin at 9 a.m. until time of celebration service at 11 a.m.

Sherry also has requested her closest friends continue their support by acting as pallbearers. These ladies are Judy Rinehart and Pat Ebner. Honorary Pallbearers will be Pat Luxford, Linda Conrad, Kris Taylor, Jennifer Jarvis, Laura Bade, Kristine Wilfong, Shelley Marzka, Janet Herring, Karen Seely, Mary Seely, Roxanne Klieber, Dottie Curtis and Beverly Oatman.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Sherry's request by making your memorials to: Blue Water Hospice, Boys Town USA and Hillside Wesleyan Church.

Edmund S. Assaf

Edmund S. Assaf, 87, of Port Huron died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 8, 1915, in Scranton, Pa., and lived here since 1948. He married Thelma J. Malooly on April 15, 1951, in Detroit.

He owned and operated Military Billiards with his late brother, Raymond, retiring in 1987.

He was an active volunteer at Port Huron Hospital and the hospital auxiliary after his retirement. He was active in other organizations including the Cedar Club of Port Huron and St. Joseph Men's Club. He was an usher at St. Joseph Church and also volunteered with St. Jude's Childrens Hospital. He was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Thelma J. Assaf of Port Huron; his daughter, Lynn G. Assaf of Port Huron; son and daughter-in-law, Edmund A. "Ted" and Marjorie Assaf of Virginia Beach, Va.; granddaughters, Samantha Lynn and Erin Nicole Assaf of Virginia Beach, Va.; sisters-in-law, Alice Assaf of Toledo, Ohio, and Nanette Assaf of Brooklyn, N.Y.; nephews, Dennis (Susan) Assaf of Grosse Pointe Park, Timothy Assaf of Dexter and Richard Assaf of New York City; nieces, Melanie (David) Orr of Grosse Ile, Leslie (Reynaldo) Assaf-Hernandez of Chicago, and Janet (Allie) Friscia of Brooklyn, N.Y.; special friends, Linnette and Larry Louie of Augusta, Ga.; many cousins and additional nieces and nephews; and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Raymond and Faris.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Stanley A. Wyczawski, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A Scripture service will be 7 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Childrens Hospital, the Port Huron Hospital Foundation, Blue Water Hospice and St. Mary Catholic Church.

Chief Robert R. Carmichael

Chief Robert R. Carmichael, 49, of Port Huron died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, in his home.

He was born Jan. 13, 1953, in Port Huron to the late Ray and Leona Schmude Carmichael.

He married Vickie Albert on Aug. 18, 1979, in Port Huron.

Chief Carmichael had served as fire chief and director of parks, forestry, cemetery and parking since Jan. 1, 1991, and as emergency service director since Jan. 1, 1989. Prior to that, he served as fire captain, appointed in 1989; fire inspector, appointed in 1986; fire lieutenant, appointed in 1984; and was hired originally as a firefighter in December 1973.

He was a graduate of Port Huron Northern High School.

He served his country in Vietnam with the U.S. Army, obtaining the rank of sergeant.

He also enjoyed spending time at his cabin and deer hunting.

In September of this year, Chief Carmichael received the fire department's Employee of the Year Award.

He is survived by Vickie; his daughter, Courtney; five sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Tom (Susan) Madden, Lynn Nihls, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce (Bette) Hellmuth, Jyll Carmichael and Dawn Dougood; two brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew (Linda) Pickelhaupt and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald (Margo) Carmichael; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Victor (Dorothy) Albert; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest (Judy) Albert and Mr. and Mrs. Scott (Karla) Beedon; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, in Colonial Woods Missionary Church. The Rev. Phil Whetstone will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery.

Members of the Port Huron Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.

James S. Cawley

James S. Cawley, 73, of Fort Gratiot died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born Sept. 6, 1929, in Roanoke, Va., and has lived in the area for the past four years.

He married Faye G. Dunford on March 23, 1956.

Jim served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He loved sports, hunting and fishing. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Faye G. Cawley of Fort Gratiot; his daughter, Toni (Clifton) Smith of Fenton; two sons, Kenneth (Lynn) Cawley of Warren and Bruce Cawley of Capac; grandchildren, Nicole Ruscoe, Craig and Ashley Smith, Brandon, Brittany Cawley and Kyle Christopher Cawley; great grandson, Cameron Ruscoe; and brother, Kenneth Cawley of Modesto, Calif.

Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Hope cemetery Chapel. Clifford Tucker, minister of the Church of Christ, will officiate.

Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.

Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Wednesday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Military graveside services will be under auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.

Memorials may be made to Blue Water Hospice.

Barbara A. Gill Blackmer

Barbara A. Gill Blackmer, 58, of Port Huron went home to be with her beloved parents, Florian and Lucille Pelc, on Friday, Oct. 11, 2002.

She was born Nov. 12, 1943, in Port Huron and was a lifelong area resident.

Mrs. Blackmer was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Blue Water Aerie 3702.

She is survived by five children, Marvin (Juanetta) Gill, Richard Gill, John (Marsha) Gill, Tina (Michael) Bambusch and Jennifer (Louie) Weaver, all of Port Huron; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Gary (Terri) Pelc; two sisters, Toni (Scott) Babin and Donna (Jack) Hebner; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Barbara Peruske, Shirley "Tex" Newton and Arnold Hinojosa.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Burial will be with her parents in Mount Hope cemetery.

Margaret Ann Bednarz

Margaret Ann Bednarz, 69, of Columbus Township died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002.

She was born Dec. 4, 1932, in Detroit, the daughter of the late Eugene and Genevieve Chartrand.

She was a longtime Columbus Township resident.

She married Stanley Bednarz on Oct. 8, 1949, in Richmond. He preceded her in death on April 4, 2002.

Mrs. Bednarz attended Richmond High School and later in life received her high school diploma. She received her medical office assistant certificate and worked in two local doctors' offices.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Jackie Bednarz of Annandale, Va.; her daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Neal Bednarz-Rovick of St. Anthony, Minn.; her grandson, Kyle Rovick of St. Anthony, Minn.; her brother and sister- in-law, Donald and Helen Chartrand of Richmond; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Cleo.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Columbus Bible Church, 1770 Palms Road, Columbus Township. The Rev. Woodrow Nelson will officiate.

Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery in Richmond Township.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation of Michigan.

Arrangements are by the Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave., at 17th Street.
