Ray C. Collins

Ray C. Collins, 88, of Port Huron Township died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, in his home.

He was born March 5, 1914, in Greenwood Township to the late Charles and Ada Collins and was a lifelong area resident.

He married Ivah Jackson on Aug. 22, 1935, in Fargo.

Mr. Collins retired in 1976 as a supervisor from Mueller Brass Co. after 42 years of service. He was the owner and operator of Collins Hardware in Port Huron Township until 1954.

Mr. Collins was a member of Wadhams Grove Community of Christ Church. He also was a member of Fort Gratiot Masonic Lodge 374 and Mystic Chapter 58.

He was an avid gardener, enjoyed woodworking and all aspects of home and family.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ivah; a daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon (Beverly) Strieter of Port Huron Township; a son, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Kay) Collins of Fort Gratiot Township; his grandchildren, Larry and Joyce Strieter of Avoca, Gary and Sarah Strieter of Burtchville Township, Mark Strieter of Port Huron Township, Lisa and Paul Round of Sarnia, William and Cheryl Collins of Rochester Hills and Pamela Collins of Fort Gratiot; great-grandchildren, Apryl, Emily, Ian and Ariana Strieter and Shelby, Justin and Joshua Round; his sister, Beulah Lohr of Port Huron Township; his sister-in-law, Hilda Collins of Port Huron; and many nieces, neph-ews, cousins and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hugh and James G. Collins; and a grandson, Daniel Collins.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

A Masonic memorial service will be 7 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home, Port Huron. Evangelist Harold Hastings and Elder David Giles will officiate.

Burial will be in Woodland cemetery, Port Huron Township.

Pallbearers will be Larry, Gary, Mark and Ian Strieter, William Collins, Paul and Lisa Round and Pamela Collins.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to con-sider the Wadhams Grove Community of Christ Church, Blue Water Hospice, Fort Gratiot Masonic Lodge 374 or a charity of the donor's choice.

Francis Clark

Francis L. Clark, 74, of Jeddo, passed away on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, after a long illness.

He was born June 27, 1928.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Clark of Jeddo. They had been married 43 years.

He is also survived by two daughters, Pamela (Earl) Robert of Jeddo and Charlene (Martin) Kendzior of Howell; and one son, Frank K. Keinz.

He has three brothers, Larry, Robert and Charles Clark, all of Michigan, and three sisters, Margeret Kusick, Shirly Wheeler and Daloris Zacoranic, all of Michigan.

He was the proud grandpa of 10 grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William and Edith Clark; and one brother, Cecil Clark.

He is truly loved and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave., at 17th Street. Pastor Don Sperling will officiate.

Burial will be in Burtchville Township cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family.

Marian Benedict

Marian C. Benedict, 91, who lived most of her life in Port Huron, died at the Medilodge of Yale, Inc., on Nov. 10, 2003, after a long illness. She lived the past 11 years in Croswell in an adult foster care home. Mrs. Benedict was born Sept. 11, 1912, the older daughter of Great Lakes Captain Roy Stockdale and his wife, Mary. She was married in 1937 to Stanley Benedict, a longtime Port Huron attorney and former member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, who died in 1982. Mrs. Benedict graduated from Port Huron High School, received an associate degree at Port Huron Junior College and a BA degree in English from the University of Michigan. She taught English and social studies for several years at Washington and Garfield schools and at Port Huron High School. A lifetime member of Grace Episcopal Church, Mrs. Benedict was a member of the organ guild for over 25 years and devoted a great deal of time to supporting church activities. She believed in sharing her skills with her community and took an active role in several organizations. As a member of the Port Huron Council of Girl Scouts, she was the leader of a Brownie Scout Troop and later a Senior Scout Troop for high school girls. Mrs. Benedict was also a member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Port Huron Musicale. Mrs. Benedict enjoyed telling about her service with the Red Cross, both during World War II and after. She was a group leader of a canteen that met soldiers returning from the war as their trains passed through Port Huron. Although coffee, milk and doughnuts were provided, she said the young soldiers always chose milk because it had not been available to them for such a long time. Survivors include her two daughters and their husbands, Martha Benedict and James Wallington of Perry and Sara and Richard Bennett of Melvin; grandsons Daniel B. (Kathleen) Fitzgerald of Warren and Andrew M. Oliver of Port Huron; step-grandson Timothy (Samantha) Bennett and children of Port Huron; and nieces Carol (Michael) Codden of Villa Rica, Ga., and Marilyn Budde of Manton, and their families. Mrs. Benedict was preceded in death by her sister Elizabeth 'Betty' Carson in 1998 and niece Janet Wheeler in 1994. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at 11 AM Thursday in the Grace Episcopal Church Goulden Memorial Chapel with The Rev. Robert P. Trask officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service in the parlor area at Grace Episcopal Church. Memorial donations in Mrs. Benedict's name may be made to Grace Episcopal Church or the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements are by Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock Street.

Dorothy Bell-Potvin

Dorothy A. Bell-Potvin, 95 of Port Huron, passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2003 in Marwood Manor Nursing and Rehab.

She was born to James and Florence Fettes on October 23, 1908 in Harrisville, MI and married George H. Bell On July 4, 1929. He passed away February 14, 1972. She then Married Joseph I. Potvin on June 5, 1993.

Dorothy retired from Michigan Bell Telephone Co. in January of 1971 after 31 years of service. She was the oldest member of First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph I. Potvin; two stepchildren, Denniese R. (August) Dahms, Rochester Hills, MI and and Dennis (Elaine) Potvin, Burton, MI; a step grandson, Dennis James (Lisa) Potvin, Flint, MI; two step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Mitchell, Kenny, Wilfred, Victor, and Eugene Fettes, and a sister, Florence Potvin.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church. The Rev. Daniel Bakay, Pastor of First Baptist Church will officiate.

Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery.

Visitation will be in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock Street, today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday at the church beginning at 10 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Potvin, Dennis James Potvin, Christopher Petrides, and Paul Shutt.

Contributions may be made in Dorothy's memory to First Baptist Church.

Kenneth Atherton

Kenneth Ray Atherton, age 58, of Kimball, passed away on Monday, Nov. 10, 2003 in Autumnwood of Deckerville after a short illness.

He was born on Dec. 14, 1944 in Paris, Texas, the son of the late Joseph and Florence Atherton.

Ken was a Construction Laborer with Local #463. He enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his sister, Theresa R. McLeod of Kimball; and a brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Yvonne Atherton of Port Huron; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Cremation has taken place.

David Lloyd

David Woodrow "Woody" Lloyd, 84, of Port Huron, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003.

He was born March 9, 1919 in Port Huron to the late David and Eliza Lloyd.

He married Virginia Drobek on April 27, 1945 in Detroit. She died May 12, 1989.

Mr. Lloyd was a machinist for Mueller Brass. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed woodworking, visiting with his family and spending time with his dogs.

He is survived by three sons, Mr. and Mrs. David (Lynn) Lloyd, John Lloyd, and Mr. and Mrs. Allen (Beth) Lloyd, all of Port Huron; a daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ed (Carol) Kopa of Marysville; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; a brother, Mr. and Mrs. Bob (Doris) Lloyd of Port Huron; a sister, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin (Phyllis) Henry of California; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Mary Lucas of Port Huron.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Al and John, and two sisters, Thelma and Elizabeth.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Reverend Johnnie Johnson of Crossroads Christian Center will officiate.

Burial will be in Woodland cemetery, Port Huron Township. Pallbearers will be Gary Spencer, Bill Reynolds, Kevin Hill, Bob Young and Steve Haas.

Allen Kestner

Allen D. Kestner, age 70, of Port Huron, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003 after a long battle with cancer.

He was born May 28, 1933 in Springville, New York, the son of the late George and Mabel (Keen) Kestner.

He married Rose M. Foster on Nov. 26, 1977 in Morton Corners, New York.

Allen grew up to follow in his fathers footsteps and became an electrician at a young age. He was a very hard working man, whom was loved and adored by all who knew him. He was "Kestner Electric" until he retired and moved to Michigan in September of 1998, to be closer to family in the area.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Rose; children, Les Kestner, Robert (Dawn) Kestner, Bonnie (Dave) McCormick, Carole (Doug) Whitley, Cheryl Lewis-Kestner, Scott Lewis-Kestner, Kimberly Kestner, Karen (Jason) Johnston and William Kestner; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Donald Wagner; sisters-in-law, Betty Kestner and Joanne Kestner; and several nieces and nephews.

Allen was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Kestner and Raymond Kestner and a sister, Carole Kestner.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 p.m. today in Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St. Pastor Timothy Bickel of Redemption Lutheran Church of Sterling Heights, will officiate.

Visiting hours are Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 p.m. until the time of service at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to Blue Water Hospice.

William Kessler

William D. Kessler, 73, of Port Huron, passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003 in Marwood Nursing & Rehab.

He was born to William and Frieda Kessler on Nov. 20, 1929 in Detroit, MI and married Arlene Wenzel in 1955. She passed away in October of 1988.

Bill was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving as a cook in the U.S. Army and as a medic in the U.S. Air Force. He was a house painter for many years, was a member of the VFW and Eagles, and enjoyed going fishing.

He is survived by his two sons, Keith C. (Mary Jo) Kessler of Smiths Creek and Kevin W. (Laurie) Kessler of Oxford; two grandchildren, Garrett and Derrek Kessler; two step-grandchildren; a brother, Clair (Irene) Kessler of Emmett; five sisters, Jackie Voss of Eastpointe, Janet Gainor of Warren, Judy (Joe) Krajacic of Utica, Justyn Wilkins of Port Huron and Julienne Korich of Sterling Heights; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Joyce Williford and Joann Kovac.

Cremation has taken place. A service in Bill's memory will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2003 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. The Rev. Bill Bendert, Pastor of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Visitation will be in the funeral home beginning at 10 a.m. Monday.

Robert Kallapure

Robert Francis Kallapure II, 13 years old, was called home to glory on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003 in Port Huron Hospital after a long illness.

He was born March 24, 1990 in Hutzel Hospital, Detroit.

He was raised in Port Huron where he attended Crull, Roosevelt and Kimball Elementary Schools. He last attended Holland Woods Middle School where he left a host of family, teachers and friends. He was a manager of the 7th grade football team, which was undefeated for the first time during the school year of 2002-2003.

Robert is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marty (Debra) Simpson; three brothers, Evan Kallpure, Terrance and Myles Simpson, all of Port Huron; a sister, Breyonna Kallapure of Detroit; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe (Eleanor) Mitchell of Port Huron and Mr. and Mrs. Larry (Sadie) Simpson of New Haven; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2003 and from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home, Port Huron. The Rev. Max W. Amstutz will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery, Port Huron.
