Neil Haney

Neil G. Haney, 90, of Marysville, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003 at his home.

He was born Jan. 13, 1913 in Gratiot County to the late Glen and Elsie Haney.

He married Theodora Caner on June 19, 1938 in Harrison.

Mr. Haney was a teacher and principal for the Marysville Public Schools from 1938 until his retirement in June of 1972. He was a member of Marysville United Methodist Church; a Charter member of Marysville American Legion Post #449; and was a member of the Marysville Golf Course Commission for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 85th Chemical Mortar Battalion stationed in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.

Mr. Haney is survived by his wife of 65 years, Theodora; one son, Mr. and Mrs. Dean (Nancy) Haney of Fenton; two sisters, Mildred Richardson of DeWitt and Ruth Hicks of Big Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Leone Haney, Doris Paulson and Bernice Lynde; and brothers, Rex and Keith Haney.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Marysville Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 in the Marysville Funeral Home. The Rev. James M. Thompson of Marysville United Methodist Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverlawn cemetery, Marysville. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider the Marysville United Methodist Church or Marysville American Legion Post 449.

Carol Hollands

Carol Hollands, 61, of Enfield, Connecticut, died at her home on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003.

Before moving to Windsor Locks, Connecticut, she lived in St. Clair Twp. and in 1960 she graduated from Marysville High School in Marysville.

Carol was born in Port Huron, and lived here until she was 15. She ran the Ludar Boarding Kennel in St. Clair.

She was the daughter of Melba I. (Nicol) Hollands, currently of Blair Manor and the late Horace S. Hollands.

Carol had lived in Windsor Locks, Connecticut prior to moving to Enfield three years ago. She had a tremendous love for dogs and had been a canine trainer and handler for most of her life. For the past eight years, Carol had been a Field Representative for the American Kennel Club.

Besides her mother, Melba, she is survived by her brother, Gerald Hollands and his wife, Sandra of Fremont, CA; a nephew, Geoffrey S. Hollands; a niece, Jennifer A. McAdam; and a grandniece, Madison A. McAdam.

A memorial service in celebration of Carol's life will be held at Smith Family Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia on Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at 11 a.m. Interment of ashes to follow in Lakeview cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Carol's name may be made to Take The Lead, P.O. Box 6353 Watertown, NY, U.S.A., 13601.

David Hawley

David W. "Biggs" Hawley, 46, of Kimball Township, died Thursday, September 18, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 24, 1957 in Tawas City to LeRoy and Mary Louise Hawley.

Mr. Hawley was a pipefitter at Pico Industries. He enjoyed automobile racing and Harley Davidson motorcycles.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Louise; two brothers and a special sister-in-law and caregiver, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel (Judy) Hawley of Kimball and Scott Hawley of Port Huron; three sisters, Mr. and Mrs. William (Cathy) Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. Larry (Debra) Cox of Kimball and Linda Hawley of Marysville; special niece and caregiver, Michelle; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Reverend Max Amstutz will officiate.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Hospice of Michigan or the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute of Michigan.

Jean Heim

Jean E. Heim, 65 of Fort Gratiot Twp., passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2003. She was born to Guy and Elizabeth Dimick on November 21, 1937 in Port Huron, attended the Marysville schools, and graduated from Marysville High School in 1956. On October 3, 1959, she married William A. Heim at St. Edward Catholic Church in Lakeport.

Jean graduated from Port Huron Jr. College, received her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 1975, and then earned her masters degree from Oakland University in 1987. For many years she taught third grade at Harrison Elementary School in Port Huron. She enjoyed gardening and loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of nearly forty-four years, William A. Heim; her two children, Debra J. (David) Eastman, Canton, MI and Michael W. (Jayme) Heim, Grand Rapids, MI; her five grandchildren, Marissa & Michelle Heim, and Elizabeth, Bryan, and Matthew Eastman; three brothers, James 'Ed' (Shirley) Dimick, Ohio, Robert (Nora) Dimick, Port Huron, and Leroy (Gloria) Dimick, Marysville; her sister in law, Lois Dimick, Richmond, MI; and several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Willard Dimick.

The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 4, 2003 in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Stanley Wyczawski, Pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery. Visitation will be in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock Street on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also be on Saturday at the church beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Contributions may be made in Jean's memory to Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan, Blue Water Hospice, or the charity of the donor's choice.

Melvin Groh

Melvin Earl Groh, age 64, of Port Huron, died Sept. 15, 2003 in Mercy Hospital E.R. unexpectedly.

He was born on Nov. 7, 1938 in Sandusky and was a life long area resident.

He married Mary L. Pincomb on Nov. 22, 1980.

He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Groh, Port Huron; son, James E. Groh, Port Huron; daughter, AB-1 Sharon L. Groh, USAF, Fort Leonardwood, MO; son, David C. Groh, Port Huron; son, Robert J. Pincomb, Muskegon; daughter, Nancy Maylone, Traverse City; daughter, Barbara Farrar, Sault Sainte Marie; brothers, Edmond, Eldon, Truman, Robert and Dewight Groh; sisters, Betty Isaac, Violet Turner, Carol Craven, Kathy Eaton and Velma Parker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Delford and Violet Groh.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Thursday in the Community Church of Christ-Wadhams Grove Branch. Elder Penny L. Strauss will officiate.

Visiting hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Wishes of the Family.

Arrangements were handled by Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

James Cruickshank

James A. Cruickshank, 50, of Port Huron, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes in Garden City, MI on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003.

He was born to Arthur and Winifred Cruickshank on May 23, 1953 in Highland Park, MI, was raised in Royal Oak, and served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

Jim was employed by Spartan X-Ray Co. of Mt. Morris, MI. He was a member of the Port Sanilac V.F.W. Post. He enjoyed fishing, boating, working on his boat, and British sports cars. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his former wife, Carol J. Cruickshank of Port Huron; his two daughters, Jennifer J. (Mark Gilmore) Cruickshank of Clyde Twp. and Dawn A. Cruickshank of Port Huron; his two grandchildren, Christian Gilmore and Winifred Cruickshank; his brother, Robert A. (Gail) Cruickshank of Applegate, MI; his sister, Ann L. Kline of Hamtramck, MI; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, James A. Cruickshank Jr.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Contributions may be made in Jim's memory to his family.

Ruth Fodo

Ruth Jean Fodo "Aunt Ruth", age 63, of Kimball, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003 in Mercy Hospital after a long illness.

She was born on Nov. 20, 1939 in McGregor, daughter of the late Jay and Sylvia McAlpine.

Ruth married James Fodo on July 24, 1965 and they had a good marriage.

Ruth loved to do charity work for people. She was the First Lady President of the Sparlingville Lions Club and secretary for six years. She also was President of the F.O.E. Ladies Auxiliary #1197 of Augusta, Georgia. She held that office for two years and was a member of the Columbus Bible Church.

She is survived by her husband, James; brother, William (Meruil) McAlpine of Saginaw; sister, Mrs. Shirley Lenk of Saginaw; and a sister, Mary (Charles) Chambers of Deckerville; 17 nieces and nephews; 27 great-nieces and nephews; and ten great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Ernestine McAlpine; nephews, Richard Chambers and William McAlpine; brothers, Robert, Erwin, David and Max; and sisters, Maxine, Susan and Rose.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St. Pastor Jay Chambers, her nephew and The Rev. Woody Nelson will officiate.

Burial will be in Caswell cemetery.

Visiting hours will be noon Tuesday until the time of service at 4 p.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the wishes of the family.

Lyle Curtis

Lyle V. Curtis, age 80, of Port Huron, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 in Port Huron Hospital after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 21, 1923 in Port Huron and lived here all of his life.

He married Bertha M. Deaton in Port Huron. She died Feb. 7, 1990.

Lyle served his country with the Marine Corps during WWII. He worked for Grand Trunk Western Railroad for 45 years, retiring in 1984. He was an excellent marksman with a pistol, and was an accomplished oil paint artist.

He is survived by his daughter, Vicki (James) Hand of Port Huron; daughter, Theda (Thomas) Dimon of Springhill, TN; his son, Charles (Krystal) Taylor; his daughter, Mable (Thomas) Dobson; his son, Dan Curtis, all of Port Huron; his daughter, Debbie Dean; and son, Don (Kris) Curtis, both of Fort Gratiot; his daughter, Maggie Fleury of Port Huron; his daughter, Betty (Gregg) Hoppenworth of Jeddo; his daughters, Kim (Frank) Benedict and Kathy (Rob) Davis, both of Port Huron; sons, Lyle Curtis and Chris (Michelle) Curtis, both of Port Huron; two sisters, Betty and Maggie Curtis, both of Port Huron; 33 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and his dog, Rex.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Ira W. Curtis and three grandchildren, Thomas Gary Dobson Jr. and Billie Jo and Bobbie Jo Radatz.

The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 7th Street with The Rev. Robert Chapman of Gratiot Park United Methodist Church officiating.

A graveside committal service will follow at Woodland cemetery, and his grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Child Abuse and Neglect Council.

Margaret Carolan

Margaret C. Carolan, 85, of Port Huron, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003.

She was born April 29, 1918 in Racine, Wisconsin and was a 35 year resident of Port Huron.

She married John R. Carolan. He died Oct. 11, 1989.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a long time volunteer at the American Red Cross. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.

She is survived by her sons, Tim (Veronica) Carolan of Chesterfield, MO and Tom (Marianne) Carolan of Farmington Hills; her daughter, Candy (Keith) Chase of Macomb; her sons, Jim (Pat) Carolan of Fort Gratiot, Dr. Kevin (Michelle) Carolan, D.D.S. of Port Huron, Mike (Karen) Carolan of Waukesha, WI and Dr. Mark (Diane) Carolan, O.D. of Schertz, TX; her daughter, Bridget (Wayne) Anderson of Burlington, WI; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Marion (Gordon) Clark of Dunwoody, GA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Margaret Peterson and her granddaughter, Emily Carolan.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Stanley A. Wyczawski, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. A Scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday.

Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Academy Tuition Assistance Fund.
