Brenda Moss-Brookings

Ms. Brenda Mae Moss-Brookins, 56, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 after a brief illness.

She was born Nov. 10, 1946 in Port Huron to the late Elvester and Sadie Moss Sr.

Ms. Moss-Brookins graduated from Port Huron High School in 1965.

She married the late Willie Moses Brookins on March 18, 1974. They had one daughter.

Ms. Moss-Brookins worked for the City of Port Huron for the past 28 years. She was planning to retire on Oct. 1, 2003.

She was a faithful member of Zion Tabernacle Church where she received the gift of the Holy Ghost at a young age under the leadership of the late Elder Charles Brown. She served her church in many ways, including Pastor Aide Committee, Sunday School Superintendent, Usher Board President, Nurses' Guild President and Trustee. Her favorite pastime was cooking for her family, friends and especially her church family.

She leaves to mourn her passing her only daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Donald (Sonia Lynn) Davidson, Jr. of Marysville; her unborn first grandbaby, due a day before her birthday; three sisters, Miss Emma Lee Moss of Port Huron, Mr. and Mrs. Joe B. (Carolyn) Thurman of Athens, Georgia, and Miss Rosalyn Moss of Port Huron; a brother, Mr. Elvester Moss of Port Huron, whom she called "Beloved"; three nieces, Miss Emma Marie Moss and Miss Rosie Lee Moss, both of Port Huron and Miss Janie Sadisha Thurman of Athens, Georgia; and a nephew and godson, Mr. Jehmar Frederick Moss of Port Huron. She was known to her nieces and nephews as "Aunt Moe, " and she called them her "Loving Hearts." She also leaves to mourn a special aunt, Lillie B. Phillips, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, including two special friends she worked with, Joan Hagerthey and Saundra Streamers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Carol N. Moss, and her grandmother, Rosie Helfin.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2003 in Zion Cathedral of Praise, 3001 Moak St., Port Huron. Bishop John Tate will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery, Port Huron.

Mary Babrak

Mary Margaret Babrak, 59, of Port Huron, passed away Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003 in Mercy Hospital.

She was born to Basil and Charlotte Simons on Dec. 28, 1943 in St. Clair and grew up in St. Clair, graduating from St. Clair High School and Michigan State University.

While living in Arizona, Mary taught on the Papago Indian Reservation and earned her masters degree in education from the University of Arizona.

After living in Afghanistan for two years, she moved to Port Huron where she was a case worker for the Michigan Department of Social Services for over 20 years.

She is survived by her six children, Wali Scott Babrak, Maleesha Mauri Babrak and David Wahab Babrak, all of Port Huron, Christopher Hamilton of Ionia, Andrew Anderson of Jackson and Jacklynn Godber of Port Huron; her granddaughter, Michayla Mauri Babrak; her longtime companion and former husband, Abdul Wali Babrak of Port Huron; her brother, Timothy Simons of St. Clair; her three sisters, Patricia Simons, Pamela Simons and Lisa Johnson, all of St. Clair; her niece, Sara Silver; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her best friend, Sandra Cleaver.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 in Cornerstone Church. The Rev. Peter Foxwell, Pastor of Cornerstone Church, will officiate. Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery, St. Clair at a later time.

Visitation will be in the Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and at the church on Wednesday beginning at 12:00 noon.

Contributions may be made in Mary's memory to Cornerstone Church.

Peggy Arch

Peggy Joan Arch, age 62, of Port Huron, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003 in her residence after a long illness.

She was born on May 30, 1941 in Meadowbridge, West Virginia.

Peggy was a wonderful Cosmetologist Instructor and was also a real estate agent. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Alexander Arch; three children, Mark Arch, Steven Arch and Rebecca Smith; four grandchildren, Eric and Ashley Smith, Marc and Robert Arch; her mother, Mildred Campbell; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wilma and Robert Campbell and Connie and Mario Dermo; and several nieces and nephews.

Peggy was preceded in death by a brother, John Phillips; and her father, Frank Phillips.

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St. Pastor Don Sperling will officiate.

Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 p.m. until the time of services at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Memorial tributes may be made to Hospice of Michigan.

Joseph Zauner

Joseph A. Zauner, 75, of Marysville, died on Monday, August 4, 2003 in his residence after a short illness.

He was born on May 15, 1928 in Port Huron, the son of the late Andrew and Gisella Zauner. Joseph married Jeri L. Lockwood on June 21, 1984 in Sterling Heights.

He was a custodian with Port Huron Area School District. He loved baseball and played for over 50 years. Joseph also enjoyed going to the Casino, and he had a special love for his dog "Sammy".

He is survived by his wife Jeri; daughter and son-in-law Cathy and Martin Smith of IL., son and daughter-in-law David and Jane Zauner of Fort Gratiot; daughters Joy and Judy Zauner both of Port Huron, daughter and son-in- law Anne Marie and Tim Smith of Cheboygan, and a daughter and son-in-law Peggy Sue and Gary Kidd of Alaska; eight grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Thomas and Beverly Zauner of Marysville; sisters Mary Houston and Dorothy Thomas both of Port Huron and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by two brothers Andrew and John and a sister Agnes Rouse.

Funeral services will be 12 noon Friday in the Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th Street. Pastor Don Sperling will officiate.

Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Memorials tributes may be made to Blue Water Hospice.

Anthony Zito

Anthony P. "Tony" Zito, 60 of Fort Gratiot Twp., passed away Monday, August 4, 2003 in his residence following a battle with cancer.

He was born to Anthony and Martha Zito on March 30, 1943 in Lincoln Park, MI, spent his youth in Highland Park, MI, and graduated from St. Benedict's High School, Highland Park where he played football, basketball, and baseball.

Tony then graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in Finance and later received a 2nd degree in Human Resources from Oakland University.

He was a helicopter door gunner and chaplin's assistant while serving with the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. He attained the rank of E-5, and received the Vietnam Service Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Following his military service, he worked for National Bank of Detroit, married Kathleen Austgen on February 26, 1972 in Detroit, and moved to Fort Gratiot Twp. in 1976 while helping bring NBD to Port Huron. He later worked for numerous banks in both St. Clair and Genesee County.

Tony was actively involved with the Port Huron Minor Hockey Association where he coached, managed, and served as a board member. He also coached baseball, and coached football at Holland Woods Middle School for 17 years.

He was a former United Way board member, worked on the Genesee County Easter Seals Campaign, and was a parishioner at. St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He enjoyed hunting and vacationing at Mullett Lake. Above all else, his family was most precious to him.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kathleen A. Zito; his two children, Mindy M. Zito, Grand Rapids, MI and Matthew A. (fiance' Stacey Landacre) Zito, Birmingham, MI; his mother, Martha Zito, Bloomfield Twp., MI; his two sisters, Florence (Frank) Woodbridge, Commerce, MI and Marie (Larry) LaBrillo, Chicago, IL; two nieces, Cynthia and Krista Woodbridge; two nephews, Charlie and Mitch Tyo; several cousins; and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony L. Zito.

The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2003 in St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Rene DesMarais, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, will officiate.

Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery under the direction of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock Street, and on Friday at the church beginning at 9 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Arthur Massucci, Daniel Donar, Bob Fracassi, Jack Austgen, Rick Austgen, Donald Roccia, Dennis Gregory, and Harvey Philko. Honorary pallbearers will be Keith Hinton, Dave Adams, John Clemmer, Frank Woodbridge and Larry LaBrillo.

Contributions may be made in Tony's memory to the University of Michigan Cancer Center.

Hilmart Wahl

Mr. Hilmart Charles "Mike" Wahl, 90 of Port Huron died Monday, August 4, 2003 in Port Huron Hospital after a short illness.

He was born October 10, 1912 in Avoca to the late Rudolph and Anna Wahl.

He married Nora Miller on September 5, 1942. She died September 1, 1953. He married Marjorie Farrell on August 4, 1956 in Port Huron.

Mr. Wahl was a Cold Header Operator at Pressed Metals and Midwest Machine prior to his retirement. He enjoyed gardening, horses and being at home.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; a son, Mr. & Mrs. Brian (Renee) Wahl of Marysville; a stepson, Ronald Farrell of Kimball Township; three granddaughters, Stacey, Katie and Alyson Wahl; a brother, Mr. & Mrs. Elden (Frances) Wahl of Kimball Township; and several nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna I. White; and two brothers, Russell and Elwood Wahl.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in Pollock-Randall Funeral Home. The Reverend Thad Spring of Community Wesleyan Church, Marysville will officiate.

Burial will be in Springhill cemetery, Fargo.

Arthur Ulmer

Arthur H. Ulmer, M.D., 85 of Port Huron, passed away Monday, August 4, 2003 in his residence following an extended illness.

He was born to Arthur and Marie Ulmer on March 22, 1918 in Toledo, OH where he attended grade school, high school, and the University of Toledo. He also attended Ohio State University where he was a lab instructor in both qualitative and quantitative analysis.

He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School with a M.D. degree in January of 1943 and was elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha national honorary medical fraternity and the Victor C. Vaughan Honor Society. He then served his Internship and Assistant Residency in Surgery at the University of Michigan Hospital in 1943 and 1944.

Dr. Ulmer married Betty Key Ulmer in December of 1943 in Ann Arbor. They were married 46 years until her death in 1989.

He was assigned to the A.U.S. in September 1944 as a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps from R.O.T.C. He began his duty with the 124th Surgical Evac. Hospital which saw action in the E.T.O. supporting the 82nd Airborne Division beginning in January of 1945 during which time he was issued a battle star for the Battle of the Ruhr and was promoted to Captain.

Dr. Ulmer returned to the U.S. in 1946 at which time he resumed his graduate studies at the University of Michigan on a John Harper Seely Fellowship and served as lab instructor in gross anatomy and surgical anatomy in the Medical School, and was an instructor in surgery at the University Hospital. His great interest was in teaching and he introduced the first "Clinic Days" in Port Huron featuring guest speakers from the University of Michigan.

He and Mrs. Ulmer and their children, Holly and Heidi, came to Port Huron in March, 1950 from Ann Arbor.

He was the first diplomat of the American Board of Surgery to come to Port Huron, and became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1950, later serving on the examining board for prospective Fellows of the organization. He was the first Chief of Surgery at Mercy Hospital, and served as Chief of Surgery at both Mercy and Port Huron Hospital on numerous occasions, and also served as Chief of Staff.

He became a director of the St. Clair County unit of the American Cancer Society and was soon appointed to the Board of the Michigan Division of the American Cancer Society as Chairman of the Division Service Committee. He was elected President of the Michigan Division of the American Cancer Society in 1977 and received the "Flag Award" from the Michigan State Medical Society for this honor. He was a member of the St. Clair County Medical Society serving as President of that organization in 1964. In addition to his active surgical practice, he was Medical Director of the Mueller Brass Co. from 1953 to 1983.

Dr. Ulmer had many other interests and was active in the Port Huron Little Theater having designed and executed the lighting for all of their musicals and many other productions for several years. He was a former member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church serving on the Vestry and as Chairman of the Building Committee. He also was a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Port Huron-Maryville Chamber of Commerce for several years and served on the City of Port Huron Zoning Board of Appeals.

One of his favorite pastimes was sailing. He sailed in thirteen Port Huron-to-Mackinac races with his "Skipper" George W. Mosher, in the later years acting as navigator. He also sailed for many years in the Sunday and weekend regatta.

He is a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Port Huron Golf Club, Port Huron Lodge #343 BPOE, Charles Hammond Post #8 American Legion, Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society, and the Mueller Brass Co. Quarter Century Club.

Dr. Ulmer is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Dr. Holly York and Dr. R. Martin York, Atlanta, GA, and Heidi Sorensen, Kailua Kona, HI; and his five grandchildren, Noelle and Arthur York, and Lindsay, Noah and Brittany Sorensen.

Cremation has taken place.

A service in Dr. Ulmer's memory will be at 2 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2003 in Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Robert Trask, Pastor of Grace Episcopal Church, will officiate.

Contributions may be made in his memory to Grace Episcopal Church or Blue Water Hospice.

Arrangements are by Smith- Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock.
