James Alloway

With his distinctive trademark cigar and traveling partner Duke III, his brown boxer, friends and family mourn the sudden death of James S. Alloway, Tuesday, April 13, 2004.

Jim and Duke were well known in Mount Pleasant and at home in St. Clair County.

A life-long resident of Port Huron, Mr. Alloway was at his Mount Pleasant home with wife Betty when he was stricken on Tuesday.

Educated in Port Huron area schools, Jim entered the US Army in 1953-1955 and served in the 96th Field Artillery Division in Korea.

A fourth generation civil servant, Jim's first job was with the City of Port Huron before denying a deferment and entering the US Army. Upon his return from Korea, Jim worked for A. Farris & Son Company and Farris Food Stores of Port Huron.

Jim and Betty also owned and operated Alloway's Motel in Port Huron for 30 years.

His family's tradition of public service began in Ireland where his great grandfather, James Carmody was a policeman. Carrying on that tradition, Jim was a civil service retiree of the US Army at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Mount Clemens. His grandfather was Chief Deputy Sheriff of St. Clair County, and a Port Huron police officer.

As a child, Jim and his cousins could typically be found playing at the Port Huron Fire Department's Station #1 where his father and three uncles were Port Huron firefighters.

Following his sons to college in Mount Pleasant, Jim helped them build their businesses.

In 1995, he helped in efforts for marketing support for Oklahoma Federal Credit Union destroyed in the April 19 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, OK. The credit union was a client of son Joe's national credit union marketing business.

A Mount Pleasant regular, Jim could often be found at coffee with friends and talking news of the day.

During John Engler's early days in the state legislature, Jim would often be found with Matt Engler talking about the price of beef and John's work in Lansing.

Jim is survived by his wife of 51 years Betty (Farris) Alloway; son, Joseph (Ferris) Alloway; granddaughters Lauren, Megan; and grandson, Jonathon Alloway.

Son Jimmy Alloway passed away April 2, 1994.

Jim is also survived by sisters, Theresa (Joseph) Oles, Joanne (Joseph) Napolitan, Peggy (Richard) Gordon, and his dear sister Mary (Jim) Davis. Also brother Patrick Alloway. He enjoyed and loved his countless nieces and nephews.

Jim had been excited about returning home to help in son Joe's 81st District Michigan House Legislative campaign. He had jokingly talked about following Matt Engler's example.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Rene L. Desmarais will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

Pallbearers are nephews, Joseph and David Oles, Patrick Napolitan, Chris and Craig Gordon. Special pallbearers are "nephews" Frank and Mike Livingston.
