John Beadle

John "Jack" Beadle, age 88, of Port Huron and formerly of Melvin, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 in his home.

He was born September 7, 1915 in Speaker Twp. to Edward and Ethel Beadle.

He lived most of his life in the Speaker Twp. area, and most recently in Port Huron.

As a young man, Jack sailed the Great Lakes aboard different freighters. He worked as a farmer, and also worked for AC Spark Plug in Flint until his retirement.

After retirement Jack was a sportswriter for the Brown City Banner. He enjoyed going to sporting events and photography. For many years he was a member of Fellowship Bible Church in Brown City.

He is survived by his wife Marie Beadle of Port Huron, three daughters, Brenda Duva of St. Clair, Beverly (Alan) Miller of St. Clair, and Bonita (Roger) Flinn of Livermore California; a son, Brian (Cheryl) Beadle of Kokomo, Indiana; grandchildren, Curt (Jennifer) Groat of Leesburg, VA, Todd (Mary) Groat of Sitco, Alaska, Nancy (Donald) May Lynchburg, Virginia, Jonathan Groat of New York, Sean (Susanna) Johnston of Kimball, Nathan (Kristie) Johnston of Kimball, Heather Johnston of Three Rivers, Michigan, Bradley Flinn of Burlingame, California, Greg (Angela) Flinn of Grand Junction, Colorado, Daniel Flinn of Grand Junction, Colorado, Kenneth Flinn of Denver, Colorado, Lindsay Beadle of Kokomo, Indiana, and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Groat, and a grandson, Daniel Groat.

The Funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Monday in the Fellowship Bible Church, 2935 Peck Road in Brown City with The Rev. Richard Black officiating.

Burial will follow in Speaker Twp. cemetery. Jack's son, Brian, and Jack's grandchildren will be pallbearers.

Friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street, Port Huron, and at church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.

Memorials may be made to Blue Water Hospice or the Fellowship Bible Church.

David MacNeil

David John "D.J." MacNeil, age 64, of Port Huron, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2004 in Marwood Manor after a long illness.

He was born on Aug. 23, 1939 in Port Huron, the son of the late Neil MacNeil and Doris Schoneman.

David is survived by his daughter, Karen (Paul) Monahan; son, Keith (Stephanie) MacNeil; daughter, Kathrine MacNeil; seven grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; step-son, Clarence Alan Webster and fiance', Judy; step-daughter, Phyllis (Robert) Todd; step-son, Terry Webster and Mary Dickers; and their mother, Helen MacNeil; four step- grandchildren; one step-great- grandchild; sister and brother-in-law, Sharron and Chuck Roome; niece, Carrie Trenner; nephew, Charles and Wendi Roome of Marion, Indiana and their children, Calen and Kelsi; nephew, Eric and Michelle Roome and their daughter, Harmony.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in North Lakeport Wesleyan Church. The Rev. Charles Roome and The Rev. Drew Mills will officiate.

Visiting hours will be 12 to 1 p.m. Monday in the church.

Cremation arrangements are by Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St.

Memorial tributes may be made to the American Kidney Foundation.

Robert Kersul

Capt. Robert B. Kersul, 78, of Yalaha, FL and formerly of Port Charlotte, FL and Port Huron, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Wednesday, July 14, 2004.

He was born to R.B. and Margaret Kersul on March 26, 1926 in Port Huron, attended the Port Huron schools, and attended high school at Port Huron High School with the Class of 1943 until he entered the service.

Robert served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and then went to work on the Great Lakes beginning as a deck hand. He later captained the Ludington, MI C&O car ferries on Lake Michigan, and retired after piloting ships through the Panama Canal. He was a life member of the Port Charlotte Elks Club.

Robert is survived by his wife, Elaine Peacock Kersul; his daughter, Marilyn (William) Franklin, Tavares, FL; his grandson, Blake Huey; and his brother, William (Marilyn) Kersul of Port Sanilac.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert "Bobby" Kersul and his sister, Margorie Leighton Booher.

A service in Robert's memory will be held at noon Monday at the Thomas Edison Parkway Flag Plaza just north of the Blue Water Bridges.

Cremation arrangements were by Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St.

Robert Hayes

Robert J. Hayes, age 83, of Port Huron Twp., died July 25, 2004 in Port Huron Hospital after a long illness.

He was born August 6, 1921 in Yale, and was a Port Huron area resident for most of his life.

He married Nina Davison on January 10, 1945 in Port Huron.

He served his country in WWII with the U.S. Navy. He worked for Grand Trunk Railroad and also for Prestolite Wire before his retirement.

Bob was a fan of baseball and hockey, and enjoyed watching the Tigers and Red Wings. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Nina Hayes of Port Huron; son, Glenn (Vickie) Hayes of North Street; daughter, Linda (Dennis) Snyder of Port Huron; son, William (Linda) Hayes of Battle Creek; seven grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; his brother, Gerald (Joan) Hayes of New Jersey; sisters-in-law, Jean Wendorf of St. Clair and Dorothy (Chris) Wagner of Port Huron.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Kerr.

The funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 7th Street with The Rev. Max Amstutz, Port Huron Hospital Chaplain officiating.

Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brian and Scott Hayes, Donald Snyder, Fred Clark, Christopher Runge, and Kevin Robbins. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Snyder Jr., Steve Kristic, and Jonathan McLaren.

Friends may visit Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family.

Myrtas Hayes

Myrtas Hayes of Port Huron went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 6, 2005 following a long illness. Myrtas was born March 10, 1920 to the late Raybon and Bessie Reeves of Monroe, GA and she moved to Michigan at an early age. She lived in the Smiths Creek area for many years and enjoyed gardening, sewing, and quilting.

She leaves to cherish her memory, a sister Celia (Robert) Cherry of Grand Rapids, MI, three daughters Janice Hobbs and Sarolyn Lane, both of Port Huron, and Carolyn Thelmas of Columbus, OH; a son, Paul Thelmas of Port Huron; a nephew, Ray Boykin of Pasadena, CA; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

Myrtas was preceded in death by a son, Douglas, husbands, Charles Coleman and Roy Hayes, two sisters, Pinkie Bell Reeves and Estoria Boykin, and a daughter, Sally Ann Thelmas.

The funeral service is at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 11, 2005 in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh Street with the Rev. Max Amstutz, Chaplin of Marwood Nursing & Rehab, officiating. Burial is in Lincoln Memorial Park cemetery, Clinton Township.

Andrew Griest

Andrew J. Griest, Jr., age 79, of Marine City, passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2004 in Burkett's Adult Foster Care Home after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

He was born on June 23, 1925 in Harrisburg, PA, son of the late Andrew J. Griest, Sr., MD and May Garman as well as his stepmother Irma Riechart Griest.

Andrew married Melody Crown on July 27, 1991 in Allentown, PA.

He was a World War II veteran serving in the Eurpoean Theater Operation and fought in the Battle of the Bugle. Andrew was wounded twice in action and received a Purple Heart.

He had a PHD in Metallurical Engineering from Lehigh University and retired from IBM.

Andrew is survived by his wife Melody; sister Marcia Kistler of Allenton, PA; three stepchildren; Scott Lamont of Milwaukee, WI, Kori Sirochman of Pittsburgh, PA and Beth Tetrault of Troy, MI; two grandchildren Jacob Lamont and Angela Tetrault; three nieces and five nephews.

He is preceded in death by a sister Jean Leiby and a brother Edward.

Private family services will take place.

Burial wil be in Indiantown Gap National cemetery in Pennsylvania.

Allen Frederick

Allen E. Frederick, 52, of Port Huron, died Thursday, July 15, 2004 as a result of an accident at his work.

He was born to Jessie and Margaret Frederick on Dec. 30, 1951 in Chicago, IL.

On Sept. 30, 1978, he married Patti Dykema in Lansing, IL.

Allen worked for Huntsman Corp. in Marysville for the last 14 years and was a member and former president of the PACE union. He had successfully completed a fire protection course at Texas A&M University in connection with his job.

Whether he was helping his son fix his car, taking his daughter to lunch at Denny's or giving horseback rides to his grandson, Al was always spending quality time with his family. He enjoyed building miniature airplanes, radio control cars, and playing flying games of the computer. He also loved to play the guitar and buy turkey sandwiches at Subway every Sunday from his daughter.

Al is survived by his wife of 25 years, Patti L. Frederick; three children, his son, Bobby, Shawn Allen (Carrie) Frederick and Angela Lynn Frederick; his two grandchildren, Dustin Allen and Alyssa Marie Frederick; and his sister, Cyndy (Richard) Stephens.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Tim Dykema and Kirk Nickerson will officiate.

Visitation will be in the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Betty Fraleigh

Betty L. Fraleigh, 83, of Burtchville Twp., passed away Thursday, July 29, 2004 in Port Huron Hospital.

She was born to Alger and Elizabeth Guilds on Jan. 18, 1921, attended school in Blaine, graduated from Highland Park High School, received her teaching certificate from Ferris State University, and then graduated from Wayne State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education.

On Feb. 19, 1956, Betty married Shirley J. Fraleigh in Royal Oak.

She taught first and second grade for 34 years, 26 of those in the Hazel Park School District before retiring in 1978.

Betty was a life member of Lexington Lodge #137 OES; a member of Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Royal Oak Lodge #61; and a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood since 1972. She was also a member of the Central Lakeport United Methodist Church and the Women's Group of the church. She enjoyed horseback riding and traveling.

She is survived by her son, Alger J. (Glenda) Fraleigh of Fort Gratiot Twp.; her brother, Robert (Bettie) Guilds of Tucson, AZ; her sister-in-law, Olive Woods of Port Huron; four nieces and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Shirley, who died Aug. 2, 2002; her parents; three siblings; a niece; and a special aunt, Lina E. Hubert.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. The Rev. Ralph Barteld, Pastor of Central Lakeport United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeport cemetery.

Visitation will be in the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Lexington Lodge #137 will conduct a service at 6:30 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Glover, Elmer Campbell, Lyle Danforth, Calvin Gilbert, Charles Ellis, Jack Pulley and Raymond Fraleigh.

Contributions may be made in Betty's memory to Central Lakeport United Methodist Church or the Salvation Army.

Robert Deering

Robert W. "Windsor" Deering, age 63, of Port Huron, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 10, 2004.

He was born Sept. 27, 1940 in St. John New Brunswick, Canada, the son of the late Jim and Frances Deering.

He married Pauline M. Fleury on Oct. 1, 1966 in Port Huron.

He had an eye for useful old items. He enjoyed walking in the woods, fishing, visiting friends and family and working in his garden and yard. He was talented in repairing anything from autos to old toys. He also enjoyed collecting stamps and coins and was an avid newspaper reader, new and old.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline M. Deering of Port Huron; his son and daughter-in-law, Paul D. and Janice Deering of Port Huron; his daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn F. and Larry Mitchell of Port Huron; his grandchildren, Paul D. Deering Jr., Renae and Ashley Smith; his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and John Nichols of Branford, Ontario; his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Vie Deering of Windsor, Ontario; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary and Anthony O'Donnell, Phyllis J. Fleury, W. Joseph and Joyce Fleury, Kenneth Rickett, Yvonne and Larry Snowden, Charles and Helen Fleury, Linda Fleury, Dennis and Beverly Fleury, Lawrence and Melissa Fleury, Paul and Sandy Fleury, Virginia and Joseph Walker, Annette and Patrick McAuley and James and Debbie Fleury; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Brooks; his sisters-in-law, Vivian Rickett and Suzanne Nichols; and his brother-in-law, Daniel Fleury.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St. The Rev. Max Amstutz, Port Huron Hospital Chaplain, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Jowett Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the wishes of the family.
