Gladys Rachul

Gladys G. "Gwen" Rachul, 80, of Jeddo, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004 in her home after a long illness.

She was born Sept. 21, 1924 in North Carolina, daughter of the late John and Rose Herring.

Gladys married Chester Rachul. He died Dec. 12, 1992.

Gwen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Gary Messina of Jeddo; granddaughter, Yvonne Marie Jess of Kimball Twp.; and a grandson, Gary Messina of Jeddo.

Private family services have taken place.

Cremation arrangements are by Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St. Port Huron.

Mary Phillips

Mary B. Phillips, 87, of Marysville, moved on to eternal life on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004.

She was born on Nov. 18, 1916 in Detroit, daughter of the later Wesley and Elizabeth Rose.

Mary enjoyed playing bingo and cards.

She is survived by a sister, Beatrice Rattray; daughter, Rose Ratliff; granddaughters, Dale Ann (John) Forbes, Karen Ratliff and Ann Ratliff; great-grandchildren, Chris (Missy) Harris, Erin Forbes, Kim Forbes, Kevin LenKiewicz and Mark LenKiewicz; great-great-grandchildren, Miranda, CJ, Brendon and Lacey Harris; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, George Robert "Bob" and Wesley "Red" Rose; and her husbands, Al Miller, Charles LaForest and Charles Phillips.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Riverlawn cemetery Chapel in Marysville. Pastor Don Sperling, pastor of the River of Life Christian Fellowship will officiate. Burial will be in Riverlawn cemetery.

Cremation arrangements are by Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St. Port Huron.

Memorial tributes may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Laverne O'Reilly

LaVerne M. O'Reilly, age 69, of Fort Gratiot, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004 in her home following a long illness.

She was born May 1, 1935 in Alexandria, LA and lived here most of her life. She married Thomas R. O'Reilly on July 5, 1954 in Louisiana.

LaVerne retired in 1989 from Port Huron Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and she enjoyed gardening and reading.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas R. O'Reilly of Fort Gratiot; her daughter, Susan A. (Mark) Muir of Fort Gratiot; sons, Michael S. O'Reilly of Waukeegan, IL and Daniel P. O'Reilly of Gaylord; seven grandchildren; and her brother, Nelson (Berniece) Mitcham of Louisiana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Isiah and Florence Mitcham and a sister, Lucy Burmeister.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Stanley A. Wyczawski, Pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

David Naplin

David A. Naplin, 60, of North Street, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004 in William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, from injuries suffered in a tractor- automobile accident Monday evening.

He was born to Edgar and Margaret Naplin on July 11, 1944 in Albert Lea, MN, attended school in Thief River Falls, MN, and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls in 1962.

In 1966, David graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in industrial arts. He began teaching in the Port Huron Area School District in 1967 and was at Port Huron High School for four years before moving to Chippewa Middle School where he taught until his retirement in 1996.

On June 23, 1973, he married Pamela A. Brown in Port Huron.

David was also a full time farmer in North Street, and he enjoyed fixing up and repairing farm equipment. He was always available to help his neighbors. He was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, enjoyed woodworking, and was a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau, AARP, and the Model A Restorers Club. When younger, David liked to travel and go camping, and he loved to visit the Pointe Edward Casino.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Pamela A. Naplin; his three sons, Eric D. and Lee A. Naplin, both of Kalamazoo and Mark E. Naplin of North Street; his three brothers, Charles (Sharon) Naplin of Thief River Falls, MN, Robin (Linda) Naplin of Park Rapids, MN and Mark Naplin of Cohasset, MN; and his niece and three nephews, Kristin, Bradley, Brian and Scott Naplin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister-in-law, Mabel Naplin; and his uncle, Everett Naplin.

The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Faith Lutheran Church. The Rev. Timothy Eichberger, Pastor of Faith Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Black River Lutheran Church cemetery, Red Lake Falls, MN at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. and on Sunday at the church beginning at 2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Rob Glombowski, Wes Belling Sr., Ed Bean, Fred Witter and Bradley Naplin. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Palmateer, Dennis London, Bill McNaughton, Charley Engel, Chris McNaughton and Fred Lepien.

Contributions may be made in David's memory to Faith Lutheran Church.

Michael Nofs

Michael J. Nofs, 59, died unexpectedly Sunday, December 5, 2004 in Caro Community Hospital.

He was born March 4, 1945 in Port Huron and lived here until 1970 and has lived in Caro since.

Mike was a 1962 graduate of St. Stephen's High School and participated in football, basketball and golf. He graduated from Port Huron Junior College (now SC4) and Michigan State University. He was a veteran of the Vietnam era serving with the Air Force. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was employed with the State of Michigan retiring in 1997.

Mike was a member of the American Legion in Caro, president of the Tri-countyHomeless Coalition, member of the board and donor to the Michigan Fine Arts Youth Camp and a member of the Detroit Organization of Leading Landlords and Real Estate Strategists for 25 years. He was involved in Health and Wellness and was a founder and director of Hopestream and involved in ENIVA.

Mike was also an avid golfer and won a championship in Tuscola County.

He is survived by his daughters, Kelly M. Nofs of Boston, MA and Karen A. (Marko) Punda of Skokie, IL; sister, Margaret M. (Richard) Rutkofske of Port Huron; brother, Francis A. (Sharon) Nofs of Marysville and sister, Pauline A. Nofs of Jeddo. Nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday in St. Stephen's Church. The Rev. Rene L. Desmarais, Pastor will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Wishes of the Family.

Michael Nuss

Michael Nuss Jr., age 95, of Marysville went home to be with the Lord on September 9, 2004 in Mercy Hospital. He was born August 12, 1909 in Pennsylvania. He lived in the Blue Water Area for the past 26 years. He married Agnes Fisher July 29, 1930 in Steubenville, Ohio.

Michael sold life insurance for Prudential. He retired as a Materials Controller for the Chrysler Corporation. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, and St. Clair County Right to Life. He is survived by his wife Agnes Nuss of Marysville, a son, Michael (Theresa) Nuss III of Houston, Texas, daughter-in-law, Nancy Schoenfeld of Sun City, Arizona, 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his son Christopher Nuss in 1985.

The funeral service will take place at 11 AM Saturday in the Grace Episcopal Church with The Rev. Robert P. Trask, Rector, officiating. A graveside committal service will follow in Marysville Riverlawn cemetery. Friends may visit at church from 10:15 AM until the hour of service at 11 AM. Memorials are appreciated to Grace Episcopal Church or St. Clair County Right to Life. Smith Family Funeral Home - South was in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Musser

Phyllis I. Musser, age 88, formerly of Port Huron, died August 17, 2004 in Conroe, Texas after a lengthy illness.

She was born May 26, 1916 in Port Huron.

She married Marshall L. Musser in Port Huron. He died July 9, 1989.

She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn "Ki" (Mabry) Dellinger, Conroe, TX and Mary Beth "Topper" (Bill) Maloney, Dexter, MI; grandsons, Troy Maloney, Dillon, CO and Mike (Angie) Maloney, Gregory, MI; very special great-granddaughter, Michaela Maloney, Gregory, MI.

A memorial mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Rene L. Desmarais will officiate. Inurnment will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Memorials are requested to St. Joseph Church.

Mabel Mortimer

Mabel Day Mortimer, age 94, of Port Huron, died Thursday, November 18, 2004 in Barss Residential after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's disease.

She was born October 22, 1910 in Detroit, and lived in Port Huron most of her life.

She married George Day Jr. in 1937. He died in 1983. She married Floyd Mortimer in 1984. He died in 1994.

Mabel graduated from Port Huron High School and Port Huron Business School. She was a former member of Assembly Dance Club and the Port Huron Golf Club.

Mabel was the longest living member of the University of Michigan Alzheimer's Research Program, and her participation was particularly noted at the January 2003 American Medical Association meeting.

She is survived by her two children, Diane (James) Siler of Kimball Twp. and George C. (Gina) Day III of Port Huron; five grandchildren, Bruce Black, Douglas (Jeri) Black, Bonnie Black, George C. Day IV, and Bryan Day; four great-grandchildren, Robb, Brendan, Zachary, and Joshua Black.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Susan Tovar.

The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street with The Rev. Thad Spring of Community Wesleyan Church, Marysville officiating.

Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery. Her grandsons will be pallbearers.

Friends may visit today from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday one hour before the service.

Memorials may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, Community Wesleyan Church, or St Paul's Episcopal Church.

Halstead Mosher

Mr. Halstead M. Mosher, 89, of Marysville, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004 in St. John River District Hospital after a short illness.

He was born on October 13, 1915 in Glens Falls, New York, son of the late William and Winifred Mosher.

Halstead married Maxine E. Schultz on August 25, 1937 in Angola, Indiana.

He retired as District Manager of General Foods. Halstead enjoyed golf, was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Sterling Heights and was an officer of the Fox Den Condominium Association.

Halstead is survived by his wife, Maxine of Marysville; stepson, David (June) Schultz of Seneca, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Rodney (Mary) Schultz, Daniel (Ann) Schultz, John Schultz, and Linda (Roger) Rupp; six great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

Memorial services will be at at a later date.

Cremation has taken place.

Stanley McCracken

Stanley R. McCracken, age 63, of North Street, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004 in his residence after a long illness.

He was born April 2, 1941 in Scotland, son of the late John and Sarah McCracken.

Stanley married Gwen A. Curtis on Oct. 26, 1963 in Roseville.

He served in the United States Army and Air Force. He was a past State Department Commander for the DAV from 1995-1996 and held numerous offices at state and chapter levels. He was president and founder of the Yale VA Outpatient Clinic, which was the first local outpatient clinic, and through is efforts, there are now 193 outpatient clinics throughout the country.

Stanley was a member of the St. Edward's on the Lake Catholic Church; DAV Chapter 12; and was a strong and devoted veteran advocate; a member of the National Order of Trench Rats; was a life member of the Air Force Sergeants Club and the VFW. He was also a member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Gwen of North Street; son and daughter-in-law, James Scott and Brenda K. McCracken of North Street; daughter and son-in-law, Kelly Ann and David Wille of Fraser; son and daughter-in-law, Sean Andrew and Kathy A. McCracken of Brant, MI; ten grandchildren, Christina Ann, James Scott, Tiffany Nicole, Melissa Marie, Sarah, Nicole, Christopher, Amanda, C.J. and Shane; brother and sister-in-law, John G. and Ann McCracken of Dearborn Heights; sister and brother-in-law, Rose Marie and Christopher Power of New Baltimore; sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Ronald Ruper of Ohio; several nieces and nephews; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Norman and Eleanor Curtis of Roseville; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and several other family members.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Edward's on the Lake Catholic Church, 6995 Lakeshore Rd. The Rev. Joseph Esper, pastor of St. Edward's on the Lake Catholic Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Kinney cemetery.

Pallbearers will be James Scott McCracken II, Kevin A. Curtis, John McCracken, Jesse Beaudin, Chris Jones and Jim Martens.

St. Clair Allied Veterans Council will conduct military honors.

Memorial tributes may be made to the wishes of the family.
