Lois Haar

Lois K. Haar, 83, of Port Huron, died Thursday, November 25, 2004 in Mercy Hospital.

She was born March 10, 1921 in Port Huron to the late Wallace and Ruth Bliss.

She married Jack Haar December 4, 1942 in New York City. He preceded her in death January 16, 2003.

Lois was an avid bridge player; co-chairperson of the annual P.H.H.S. Class of 1938 reunion; a charter member and registrar of Ottawa Chapter D.A.R.; and past president of Charles Hammond American Legion Auxiliary. She retired from the Social Security Administration local office after 27 years of service.

She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Smith; two grandchildren, Daniel Galbraith and Kelly (Tim) Raymo; and two great-grandchildren, Kenneth and Kerrie Raymo.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jack, Jr. in 1973.

There will be no service. Cremation arrangements entrusted to Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Walter Ehlert

Walter R. Ehlert, 89, died Tuesday, November 2, 2004 after a lengthy illness.

He was born September 17, 1915 in Port Huron and has lived here all his life.

Walter retired from Mueller Brass as a quality control inspector after 45 years of service. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club and was also a past member of St. Joseph Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Virginia B. (Relken) Ehlert of Port Huron; daughter, Carol (August) Rickert of Lexington; son, James (Joan) Ehlert of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, James (Carrie) Ehlert and Andrea Ehlert, both of Dallas, TX; dear friend, Valerie Michaels of Kansas City, MO.

He was preceded in death by one brother and six sisters.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Rene L. Desmarais, pastor of St. Joseph Church will officiate. Inurnment will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Church or Blue Water Hospice.

Andrew Dortman

Andrew J. "Jim" Dortman, 69, of Fort Gratiot Twp., passed away on Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 in Evangelical Home, Port Huron, following a long illness.

He was born to the late Andrew and Edna (Caryl) Dortman Potvin on Sept. 7, 1935 in Port Huron and married Joanne G. Edie on Oct. 1, 1960 in Faith Lutheran Church, Port Huron.

Andrew was a life long area resident, graduating from Port Huron High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1953 to June 1956. While in the service, he worked in the communications field as a wire chief and P.P.I. operator on a radar scope. He worked at Prestolite Wire Division from 1969 to 1982. While working at Prestolite, he served on the board of directors of Prestolite Corp. and was host and arrangement committee chairman during the five years he was a representative for the Prestolite Wire Division.

Andrew worked at D.A. Residential as a care-giver. He was a past post Commander of the Charles Schoor Post #796 VFW. He was also chairman of the Poppy Committee and president of the Board of Directors of the Post Home.

He also served on the committee to establish the Flagship Federal Credit Union and was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. His greatest achievement came on Nov. 19, 1993 when he became to grandfather to Jessica Marie Graham, who called him "Poppy".

Andrew is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joanne Dortman of Fort Gratiot; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jodie Dortman of Fort Gratiot and Gayle and Timothy Graham of Port Huron; a very special granddaughter, Jessica Graham of Port Huron; two sisters, Beverly and Lawrence Woolman and Sandra and James Pence, both of Port Huron; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Joan Edie of Fort Gratiot; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Andrew was preceded in death by an infant son; infant sister; his parents; his in-laws, Clarence and Helen Edie; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Gloria "Pat" Dortman; and a nephew, Vernon Woolman.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. The Rev. William Terry, pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery under the direction of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.

Visitation will be in the funeral home beginning at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Donald and Gary Edie, Scott Woolman, Shawn and Eric Pence and Dave Dove.

Contributions may be made in Andrew's memory to his family.

Orville Beeler

Orville A. Beeler, 87, died Sunday, October 17, 2004 in Mercy Hospital following a long illness.

He was born September 25, 1917 in Port Huron and has been a lifelong area resident.

He married Frances H. Bettridge on March 17, 1943 in St. Stephen's Church in Port Huron.

Orville was a decorated veteran of WWII of which he was also a prisoner of war. He served in the Army from April 1941 through October of 1945. He retired from Port Huron Paper Company as an instrument technician in 1977.

After retirement, he began racing motocross at the age of 62. He had numerous hobbies including building and programing computers, inventing and building things and playing various musical instruments.

He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Frances H. Beeler of Jeddo; daughters, Eileen Holzberger (Michael Rabaut) of Port Huron, Janet (John) Schuch of New Baltimore, Carol Beeler of Port Huron and Marilyn (Michael) Raymond of Port Huron; sons, Michael Beeler of Port Huron, Stephen (Lynne) Beeler of Port Huron, Daniel Beeler of Jeddo and Paul E. (Michelle) Beeler of St. Clair; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Veronica Hoffman of Port Huron and Bernice Phillips of Houston, TX; brothers, Eugene and Clarence Beeler, both of Port Huron and Frank Beeler of Orlando, FL.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, John and Albert and sister, Helen Rodegeb; son-in-law, William Holzberger.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Edward's Church. The Rev. Joseph M. Esper, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Military Rites will be conduced under the direction of the St. Clair Allied Veterans Council.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until the service time Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family.

David Bassett

David Michael Bassett, 53, died Thursday, November 4, 2004 in Port Huron Hospital.

He was born February 11, 1951 in Port Huron and has lived here all his life.

David was a graduate of Port Huron Catholic High School. He enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his sons, Michael D. (Josephine) Bassett of Fort Gratiot and Jeffrey A. Bassett (Stephanie Wurmlinger) of Port Huron; grandchildren, Ashley Bassett, Matthew Bassett, Avery Morgan, Maria Handley and Sean Handley; his mother, Audrey Bassett of Port Huron; brother, Ty Bassett of Exton, PA; sisters, Christine (Bryan) Kalbfliesch of Brown City and Kimberley Dyrval of Port Huron; aunts, uncle, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Elmer "Al" Bassett; and his sister, Dee Ann Bassett.

Cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family.

Dylan and Derek Dixon

Our precious babies, Dylan James Dixon and Derek William Dixon, returned to the loving arms of Jesus on Oct. 12, 2004 and Oct. 18, 2004.

They were born on Oct. 10, 2004. In their short time with us, they had a profound influence on the lives of those they touched.

These sweet angels will forever be missed by their parents, Justin and Jamie Dixon of Fort Gratiot Twp.; their grandparents, Bill and Mary McKelvey and Ken and Cristi Dixon, both of Fort Gratiot Twp.; great-grandparents, Gertrude Ross of Port Huron, Butch and Jane Vallie of Romeo and Richard and Sondra Azer of Luzerne, MI; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

We will join together in love, hope and faith to celebrate the lives of the twins at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2004 in North Street United Methodist Church. The Rev. William McBride, Pastor of North Street United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Contributions may be made in the twin's memory to North Street United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St.

Hazel DesJardin

Hazel M. DesJardin, age 72, of Marysville, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004.

Hazel was born on May 15, 1932 in Marysville.

She married Maurice "Ike" DesJardin on June 27, 1953 in Port Huron. He died Oct. 28, 1991.

She enjoyed her family and socializing with her many friends. She was a member of the Port Huron Moose Lodge and the American Legion in Marysville.

Hazel was employed by Michigan Mutual Insurance Company for 23 years, first as a secretary, and later as an insurance adjuster. She then owned and operated the Green Mill Bar in Bad Axe, MI with her husband, Ike, before retiring in 1991 and returning to Marysville.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Ross Baldwin; her son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Karen DesJardin; her seven grandchildren, Jody (John) Corturillo, Tammy Baldwin, David, Matthew, Alexandra, Erica and Christina DesJardin; her brothers, David (Cathy) Wright Jr., Robert (Gerry) Wright; her sisters, Dorothy Knowles and Helen (Robert) Gaecke; her nieces and nephews; and her very special friend, Harold Mugford.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, David and Hazel Wright; two brothers-in-law, Harold Knowles and Lloyd DesJardin; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wright; and a nephew, Daniel Wright.

Cremation has taken place.

The family will receive visitors from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004 at Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St., Port Huron, with a memorial service to follow at 3:30 p.m. The Rev. Bill Terry of St. John's United Church of Christ will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Helen Decker

Helen V. Decker, 82, died Sunday, October 24, 2004 in Port Huron Hospital.

She was born August 29, 1922 in Princeton, IN. She has lived in Port Huron since 1978.

Helen was a member of Colonial Woods Missionary Church. She retired from Michigan National Bank in 1988. She was also employed at Peoples Bank for many years.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Bonnie K. (Frank) Sharpe of Port Huron and Marsha L. (Wesley) Davis of Rochester Hills, MI; grandsons, Scott Sharpe of Macomb and Todd (Constance) Ovesen of Oxford; granddaughters, Laurie (Rob) Elliott of Port Huron and Nicole L. (George) Simon, of Rochester, MI; nine great- grandchildren; her sister, Maxine Neumann, of Marysville; and several neices and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Stan Liechty will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Todd Ovesen, Scott Sharpe, Rob Elliott, George Simon, Scotty and Trevor Sharpe.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Those wishing to make a memorial may make contributions to Marwood Nursing and Rehab.

Laura Corrion

Mrs. Laura Corrion, 94, of Port Huron, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004 at the Evangelical Home.

She was born Nov. 26, 1909 in the Netherlands.

She was the mother of Gabrielle (George) Dossin, George (Linda) Corrion and Lorraine Goff; grandmother of 12; great-grandmother of 23; and great-great-grandmother of three.

She was the beloved wife of the late Jerome Corrion, and she was preceded in death by her grandson, Mark Corrion.

Private services were held.

Cremation arrangements are by Jowett Funeral Home, 1634 Lapeer Ave. at 17th St.
