Victoria Hand

Victoria M. Hand, age 97 of Port Huron, died Monday, May 7, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital after a short illness.

She was born December 15, 1909 in Chicago to Francis and Agatha Budzik. She has lived in Port Huron since she was five years old.

Victoria married John E. Hand Sr. on September 20, 1931 in Port Huron. He preceded her in death on October 21, 1980. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

She is survived by two sons, Edward Hand of Port Huron, and Robert (Cindy Huntley) Hand of Goshen, Indiana; two grandchildren, Patti (Robert) Houston of Spring Hill, Florida and Robert Hand II of Port Huron, two great-grandchildren, Travis Lee Houston and Emily Victoria Hand; nieces Dorothy Budzik and Helen Ingram; nephews, Johnny Schef and Tommy Budzik, and several other nieces and nephews.

There will be a funeral service at 10 a.m. Friday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street with The Rev. Fr. C. Paul Higdon officiating.

Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Travis Lee Houston, Richard Tokarski, Craig Schef, Dan Schef, Ralph Henschel, and Vern Ingram.

Friends may visit on Thursday (5/10) from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m to 8 p.m. in the funeral home, and on Friday (5/11) beginning at 9 a.m. Mass offerings may be made to St. Mary Church in memory of Victoria.

Gerald Nutt

Gerald R. Nutt, 66 of Fort Gratiot Twp., passed away Tuesday, August 30, 2005 in his residence after a courageous battle with leukemia. He was born to Gerald and Margaret Nutt on June 2, 1939 in Port Huron, MI and attended the Port Huron schools.

Gerry was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trap shooter, and he especially enjoyed going deer hunting with his family and friends. He was a member of the Amateur Trap Shooters Association, Blue Water Sportsmen's Association, National Rifle Association, and the Jeddo Lions Club.

He is survived by his very special companion, Karen LaBrasceur; his three children, Gerald S. (Lori) Nutt of Kimball Twp., James T. (Toby) Nutt of Lighthouse Pointe, FL, and Jacquelyn H. Nutt of Orlando, FL; five grandchildren, Natasha, Caleesha, Jordana, Jimmy, and Gibson Nutt; two sisters, Donna Anger and Sarah McColl, both of Port Huron; his brother, Thomas (Sue) Nutt of North Street; and several nieces & nephews.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2005 in Colonial Woods Missionary Church. Pastor Dwight Weber will officiate. Burial will follow in Kinney cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St., and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church.

Pallbearers will be Stan Kownacki, Tom Bigger, Orville Reid, Mike Hayes, Jim Stephens, and Jerry Lampe. Contributions may be made in Gerry's memory to the charity of the donor's choice.

Mildred Richardson

Mildred R. Richardson, 91, of Port Huron died Tuesday, July 26, 2005 in her home.

She was born March 10, 1914 in Mt. Pleasant and has lived here most of her life.

Millie married Joseph D. Richardson February 12, 1933 in Mt. Pleasant. He preceded her in death November 17, 1974.

She retired from the J.C. Penny Co. shoe department after 27 years. She was a founding member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a past member of the Daughters of Isabella and the League of Catholic Women. Millie was a member of Women of the Moose Chapter 99, Port Huron Hospital auxiliary and was in the same Thursday bridge club for 44 years. She enjoyed playing golf on the senior womens league for many years but her first love was her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Millie is survived by her daughters JoAnne Yarbrough of Port Huron and Roberta (Don) Ellis of Ruby; her granddaughter Janice (Tom) Britz of Lexington Hts; grandson Donald Ellis, Jr of Fort Gratiot and friend Verna Lozano of Fort Gratiot; great grandsons Andrew and Christopher Barnum of Port Huron; stepgreat grandchildren Shannon and Tara Britz of Port Huron and her great great granddaughter Abbie Barnum. Sister Veronica Quinlan of Marysville; her sistersinlaw, Eleanore Coughlin of Florida; Bernadine Coughlin of Texas and Pearl Coughlin of Shepard, MI. Several nieces and nephews also survive

She was preceded in death by sons, Thomas and Robert Richardson. Brothers, Thomas, Leo, William, John and Francis Coughlin. Sisters, Mary Fox, Julia Hayden and Bernadette White.

Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10a.m. Friday in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Stanley A. Wyczawski, pastor will officiate.

Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours for Millie are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9p.m. Thursday at KarrerSimpson Funeral Home and 9 a.m. Friday at the church. A Women of the Moose Memorial Service will be 7 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials in her memory may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church.

Alma Prause

Alma M. Prause, age 68, of Port Huron died unexpectedly of natural causes on August 4, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital.

She was born April 16, 1937 in Port Huron and was a life long resident.

She was active at Desmond Village and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her three daughters, Linda Woodman of Port Huron, Brenda Marriott of Georgia, and Vicky (Steve) Lossing of Jeddo; three grandsons, Bill Cornacchia of Jeddo, Melvin Marriott and Patrick Dewitt, both of Georgia; five granddaughters, Tiffany (Brian) Kirschner of Tennessee, Jennifer Marriott of Georgia, Kelsey Lossing of Jeddo, Payton Dewitt of Georgia, and Katrina Lossing of Jeddo; one greatgranddaughter, Alexis Kirschner of Tennessee; three brothers, Hank (Julie), Wayne (Marion), and Larry (Joyce) Thomas; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Eagles Lodge on Water Street in Port Huron with The Rev. Donald Doerzbacher pastor of Our Saviour Lutheran Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

Smith Family Funeral Home North was in charge of arrangements.

Francis West

Francis R. 'Rollie' West Jr., 76 of Port Huron, passed away Sunday, August 07, 2005 in Mercy Hospital. He was born to Francis R. Sr. and Eva Deana West on October 8, 1928, graduated from Port Huron High School, and attended Michigan State University. He served in the United States Air Force for 8 years, and on July 24, 1954 he married Catherine Jane Lasher in Port Huron.

Rollie managed Blue Water Vending for many years. He enjoyed boating and had a love for animals, especially dogs. He was a member of the Charles Hammond Post #8 American Legion and Port Huron Lodge #343 BPOE.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Catherine J. West; his four children, Michael L. (Kimberly C.) West, Thomas R. (Pamela M.) West, Julie M. (Kristopher A.) Moulds, and Richard C. (Angela E.) West, all of Fort Gratiot; his eight grandchildren, Matthew & Zachary West, Ryan & Nicholas West, Jenny & David Moulds, and Whitney & Jamie West; his great granddaughter, Kaley West; two sisters, Doris Bassett of Mill Valley, CA and Dawn Bower of Columbus, OH; and nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles West.

Cremation has taken place. A service in Rollie's memory will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 10, 2005 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. The Rev. Reid Benedict of First Congregational Church will officiate. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Contributions may be made in his memory to St. Clair County Humane Society or Blue Water A.M.I., PO Box 2254, Port Huron.

Robert Parmann

Robert Victor Parmann, 73, of Port Huron, died Friday, October 14 2005 in his home after a six month illness.

He was born October 5, 1932 in Port Huron and was a lifelong resident.

Bob married the former Ilene V. Worden Gerlach May 5, 1956 in Ohio.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Bob was employed 45 years at Port Huron Paper Co. and it's successors. He was a buyer and seller of collectibles one man's junk was his treasure. Antiques were his passion. He was a member of the Antique Association of St. Clair County and was a loving husband, a great father and fatherinlaw, and an excellent provider.

Bob is survived by his wife, Ilene of Port Huron; his children, Cary D. and Colleen L. Parmann and Connie L. (Frederick) Jaekel, all of Port Huron, Craig N. (Patricia) Gerlach of Ruby and Clare R. Gerlach of Daytona, FL; his brothers, Donald (Marjorie) Parmann of Ruth, Victor (Irene) Parmann of Fort Gratiot, Douglas (Gloria) Parmann of Kimball, Harold (Patty) Parmann of Glennie, Gerald Parmann of Port Huron, Arthur Parmann of Virginia and Dennis (Rene) Parmann of Port Huron; sisters, Gladys (Frank) Weaver of Flint, Linda Frostick of Port Huron, Margorie (Walter) Radike of China, MI and Gloria Winchester of CA; seven grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; and his faithful dog, Fritz.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Connie Parmann; his brothers, Melvin, Larry and William Parmann; his sister, Sally McIntyre; and his grandson, Michael Gerlach.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday (10/17) in KarrerSimpson Funeral Home. Cremation will follow. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Clair County Special Olympics.

Doris Comstock

Doris M. Comstock, 56 of Kimball Twp., passed away Sunday, September 25, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital following a prolonged illness. She was born to Lloyd and Edith Taylor on January 24, 1949 in Port Huron, attended the Port Huron schools, and graduated from Port Huron High School in 1967.

Doris worked 18 years for Prestolite Corp and later worked as a secretary at the St. Clair County Family Independence Agency. She enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, and taking trips up north. She especially liked to spend time with her family and her many friends.

She is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey A. and Chris L. Comstock, both of Kimball Twp.; her brother, Raymond D. Taylor of Louisville, KY and her twin brother, Dwain M. Taylor of Kimball Twp.; and her nephew & three nieces, James, Janelle, and Emily Taylor and Chloe Taylor Beck. She was preceded in death by her parents.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2005 in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. Pastor Scott Babin of Sparlingville Wesleyan Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Caswell cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be David Lafferty, James Taylor, Robert Shaw, Tim Dobson, Jim Rourke, and Gary Caughel. Contributions may be made in Doris's memory to her family.

Elaine Stapleton

Elaine M. Stapleton, age 51, of Croswell died Monday, September 5, 2005 in Marwood Nursing and Rehab after a long illness. She was born July 29, 1954 in Port Huron and was a life long resident.

She married Doug Stapleton on July 26, 1980 in Port Huron. Elaine worked as a nurse's aid for 12 years at the Evangelical Home. She enjoyed caring for the elderly, and going to garage sales.

She is survived by her husband Doug Stapleton of Croswell, 5 daughters, Amber, Angela, and Kelly Stapleton, and Charlene (Dan) Jamison all of Port Huron, Carolin Stapleton of Croswell, a son, Jeff Stapleton of Croswell, her father, Donald M. Koebke Sr. of Port Huron, a brother, Donald M. Koebke Jr. of Port Huron, 3 sisters, Lee (Dick) Edie of Fort Gratiot, Norma (George) Fanion of Kimball, and Ruth (Fred Lapp) Graham of Port Huron, 3 sisters-in-law, Kelly (Arthur) Diaz of Kimball, Cherie Stapleton of Port Huron, and Yvonne (Pat) Tallant of Tennessee, 2 brothers-in-law, Grant (Charity) Stapleton, and Gary Stapleton both of Port Huron, a mother-in-law, Dorothy Stapleton of Port Huron, 10 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Hazel Koebke, sister-in-law, Charlotte Stapleton, and her father-in-law, Thorwald Stapleton.

A funeral service will be held at 1 PM Thursday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North with The Rev. Max Amstutz officiating. Friends may visit Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family.

Walter Trybon

Walter Trybon, age 82, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2005. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in WWII. He is survived by Virginia, his wife of 58 years; son, Gary Trybon; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Larry Wold; grandchildren; Eric Wold, Amanda and Kevin Trybon, and a brother, Edward Trybon. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Friday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street with The Rev. Fr. C. Paul Higdon officiating. Cremation will follow and his ashes will be buried in Mt. Hope cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home Thursday from 5-8 PM. Memorial contributions may be made at the discretion of the donor.

Raymond Straffon

Raymond Ernest Straffon, Sr., 94, passed away on Friday, March 25, after a short illness. He was born February 7, 1911, in Reese, Michigan, to parents Grace and Ernest Straffon.

Mr. Straffon was an auto parts salesman for most of his life. He took great pride in his work, but the real joy of his life was music. His father, E.E. Straffon, was director of the Port Huron High School Big Reds in the 1940s and 50s. Raymond was interested in all kinds of music, from playing the tuba in a variety of bands (high school, city, college) to playing the bass fiddle in Bob Seibert's Orchestra. Mr. Straffon enjoyed playing in a variety of country clubs, retirement centers, and local landmarks such as the St. Clair Inn.

Raymond married Mildred Eleanor Harmon on January 19, 1936, and they enjoyed a wonderful life together until her death in April 1986. He married Winifred Hewitt in May 1987, and they too shared many happy times together. She passed away in December of 1995.

Raymond Straffon loved his family and friends. He never complained, but instead saved his energy for the important things in life. He was an absolute joy to all who knew and loved him. His recollection of long-forgotten events was outstanding, and his loved ones enjoyed listening to the early recollections of his life.

Surviving are his children, Raymond E. (Sally) Straffon, Jr., Port Huron; Judy (Jim) Becks, Munising, Mich.; grandchildren Shari (James Dewey) Straffon, Port Huron; Suzi (Mark Nitzel) Straffon, New Baltimore; Kathy (Wade) Mallard, Munising; Patty (Steve) Mather, Belleville, Ill.; James (Jodie) Becks, Grand Forks A.F.B., N.D., Edward Becks, Munising; great-grandchildren Nicholas and Elizabeth Dewey; Michaela and Caleb Mallard; Megan, Craig, and Michael Mather; and Matthew and Brianna Becks. Mr. Straffon was preceded in death by his parents, Grace and Ernest, brother Maurice, and sister Thelma.

His family would like to extend their gratitude and thanks to Beacon Home Care and Kristi Lite, Dr. George Carley & staff, and Karl Petho for their compassionate care and concern for Mr. Straffon's health and well-being.

Services are at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2005 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Port Huron, with The Rev. Franklin Bennett officiating. Internment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fort Gratiot Twp. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers are Don Cole, Rich Engle, Gerry Kramer, Steve Marcero, Mike DeLong, and Larry Osborn, all of Port Huron; and Jim Madaus, Auburn Hills. Memorials may be made to the St. Clair County Child Abuse/Neglect Council, or the charity of choice.

Genevieve Schunck-McCanna

Genevieve C. Schunck-McCanna, 89, died Sunday, April 3, 2005. Survived by children, Jeneal Knapp, Lloyd, Calvin, Glen, Baxter, Nora, Bonnie Aitken and Gloria. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. Visitation: 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 6th.

James Stivers

James Richard Stivers, 47 of Casco Township, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital. He was born to Donald and Norma Stivers on November 19, 1957, and attended L'Anse Creuse High School.

James loved life, his family, his pet dog, Duke, and his pet cat, Angel. He also liked to eat out and travel.

He is survived by his siblings, Donald (Gayle) Stivers, Edward (Margaret) Stivers, Steve (Robin) Stivers, Bob Stivers, and Susan (Donald) Windhorst; his nieces, Amanda, Michelle, Lindsey, and Chelsea; his nephews, Scott, Danny, Kyle, and Sean; and his great nieces, Cierra and Hannah. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Norma Stivers, and his grandparents, William Stivers, and Al & Ester Critchley.

A service in James's memory will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2005 in St. John's Lutheran Church, 16339 Fourteen Mile Road, Fraser. Visitation will be at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Contributions may be made in his memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in care of Susan Windhorst, 33777 Kennedy Drive, Sterling Heights, MI 48310. Arrangements were by Smith Family Funeral Home, 1525 Hancock St. Port Huron.

David Kitchin

David F. Kitchin Sr., 79 of Port Huron, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital following a short illness. He was born October 2, 1925 in Port Huron, was raised in Cass City, and was a long-time North Street resident.

Dave married Merle E. McComb on July 18, 1950 in Buena Park, CA and served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He had owned & operated both Kitchin Oil Co. and the Wurzel Flea Market, and was a land developer. He was a member of Charles Hammond Post #8 American Legion, Port Huron Lodge #343 B.P.O.E., and was an antique engine enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Merle E. Kitchin; three children, Sharon J. Lambert of St. Petersburg, FL, David F. (Lou Ann) Kitchin Jr. of North Street, and Merlene M. (Bruce) Lindke of Marysville; five grandchildren, Christopher D. (Lisa) Lambert & Joseph F. (Sherri) Lambert, both of St. Petersburg, FL, Laura K. (Brian) Gwisdala & Jon D. Lindke, both of Marysville, and Lucinda L. Kitchin of North Street; two great grandchildren, Alex Lambert and Calvin Gwisdala; a sister, Emma (Ernest) Bullock of Decker, MI; and several nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jason & Laura Kitchin, a son-in-law, Jerry Lambert, two brothers, Clarence Kitchin & Robert Cole, and two sisters, Donna Profit & Betty Nurenburg.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Pastor J. Randall Withenshaw of Ross Bible Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Kinney cemetery under the direction of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be members of Dave's family. Contributions may be made in his memory to Ross Bible Church Missionary Fund or the charity of the donor's choice.
