Betty Mitchell

Betty A. Stanislowski Rushton Mitchell, age 73, of Lakeport died Wednesday, October 19, 2005 in the Evangelical Home after a long illness.

She was born in Port Huron on February 24, 1932 to the late Aloysious and Josephine Stanislowski and lived in the area for most of her life.

She married Robert P. Mitchell on June 2, 1987 in Las Vegas.

Betty attended St. Stephen Catholic Schools. She worked for Prestolite Corporation which later became Allied Industries. She made many friends while working there. She achieved certification through Wayne State University and was one of the first females to join the management team at Prestolite.

She was also proud of her work with Junior Achievement as an advisor from 1979 to 1980. She retired as the Regional Sales Manager for Allied Industries covering the entire midwest territory.

Upon her retirement, Betty enjoyed traveling with her husband, Bob and her children as well. She renovated and restored many homes and entertained family by the water where she loved the flowers, wild life, and the peace.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Mitchell of Lakeport; a son, Steven (Dawn) Rushton of North Street; three daughters, Nancy (Paul) Moats of Marysville, Dianna (Karl) Teppe of Fort Gratiot and Cynthia Ashton of Lakewood, Colorado; five grandsons, Norman Cosgrove, Jason and Bobby Hobden, Richard Rushton, and Delmar Davis II; five granddaughters, Lisa (Steve) Gardner, Nicole Rushton, Natalie Davis, and Alexandra and Breanna Teppe; her stepgrandchildren, Carrie and Jeremy Moats; 11 greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Joe Stanislowski and Lloyd Boyce; three sisters, Mary Brockman, Patricia Zimmerman, and Rose White; and two stepdaughters, Rhonda Mitchell and Shaun Kotlewsky.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Larry Boyce.

Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Smith Family Funeral Home North handled the cremation arrangements.

Ronald Bradley

Ronald L. Bradley, 76 passed away July 19, 2005 in his home peacefully supported and surrounded by his family. Ron was born January 16, 1929 in Hudson, MI, the son of Gerald and Lillian (Lucas) Bradley. During his childhood he moved with his family from Litchfield, MI, Reading, MI, Dickinson, ND, Sunnyvale, CA, and Milan, MI. He graduated from Milan High School in 1947, Michigan State Normal College in 1952, and received a Masters Degree from Wayne State University.

Ron served honorably in the United States Army in Korea.

Ron and Jan have been members of the First Presbyterian Church in Port Huron for fifty years. He was an elder and member of the Wednesday morning breakfast study group.

Ron started his teaching career in 1954 at Fort Gratiot Junior High School. After five years of teaching, he became principal and held that position for ten years. He was transferred to Garfield School where he was principal and then given the privilege of helping plan and open the new Holland Woods School. He continued his administration there for the next eight years. He finished his career with four years at Indian Woods Elementary School in 1986. Ron's father was also an administrator in the Port Huron Area School District. He served as Superintendent of Schools for several years.

Ron was a caring husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janice (Jensen) Bradley and four children and their families: Scott (Celeste), Andrew, Randi and Cali Bradley of Fort Gratiot; Tedd (Karen) and Kristen Bradley of Pinckney; Beth (Mark) Lucas and Erik Lyman of Fenton; and Steven (Yevette), Ashley and Lillian Bradley of Hale; two sisters Phyllis (Wayne) Tooman of Fort Gratiot and Jill (Robert) Meyers of East Lansing. In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his brother G. Jack Bradley and a nephew Michael Gough.

Upon retirement Ron and Jan traveled extensively in all 50 states and many European countries. They enjoyed camping trips with their family especially the famous 'mushroom weekend' which has been an annual event for over 40 years.

Ron had many hobbies and interests. He belonged to the Tree Toppers'a radio controlled airplane club and attended their fellowship breakfast each week. He especially enjoyed watching and researching the history of the freighters on Lake Huron. He knew most by name. Other hobbies included wood working, duck carving, birding, building grandfather clocks, etc.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2005 in the First Presbyterian Church, 811 Wall Street, Port Huron. The Rev. Dr. Mark Thomas will officiate. Visitation with the family will be in the Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. on Thursday, July 25, 2005 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Contributions may be made in Ron's memory to First Presbyterian Church or Blue Water Hospice.

Ron will be truly missed by his family and a host of friends.

Robert Petty

Robert Bruce Petty, 65, of Fort Gratiot, died Sunday, October 9, 2005 in his home after suffering a long battle with cancer.

He was born on February 9, 1940 in Detroit to the late William and Rosalene Petty.

Robert married Suzanne Stillman on January 30, 1965.

He worked at Detroit Edison Company for over 30 years before retiring in June of 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne and their five children, Kurt Petty, Steven (Marylee) Petty, Karen (Darrell) Johnson, Robb (Heather) Petty and Laura Petty; his grandchildren, Sean Petty, Nicholas and Ellen Petty, Calvin, Katelen and Kenah Johnson; sisters, Patricia (Norman) Toole and Sharon Manis; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Colleen Fisher.

A Mass of resurrection will be 10 a.m. Thursday in St. EdwardOnTheLake Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Gerry LeBeouf, Pastor of St. Jane de Chantel Catholic Church, Sterling Heights will officiate, with The Rev. Fr. Joseph M. Esper, Pastor of St. Edward Church concelebrating.

Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday (10/12) in the KarrerSimpson Funeral Home and 9 a.m. Thursday at the church. A scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. this evening.

Robert Thoms

Robert A. Thoms, 78, of Clyde, died Sunday, July 17, 2005 in his home after a short illness.

He was born May 24, 1927 in China Township, was raised in Marine City and has lived in the Port Huron area most of his life.

He married his lifetime sweetheart, Florence M. Heering, January 27, 1945 in St. Clair.

Bob worked at the Marine City Airport prior to working for the Navy V 5 Program in Frasier, Michigan during WWII. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict as a radio repair instructor. He operated Thoms Motor Sales for 46 years.

Bob was an avid pilot, flying aircraft since he was 13 years old. He soloed out of the old Ford Airport in Detroit. He has flown out of Marine City Airport, the old airport on Gratiot Road in Marysville, owned by Stewart Weeks, Baker's Field Airport, the Haden's Field at St. Clair and St. Clair International Airport since it opened. He had commercial certification and was an aircraft dealer for over 60 years. He had owned almost 300 airplanes and has flown almost every make and model from a W.W. I German Folker Tri plane to modern single and multi engine aircraft. Bob was known as Mr. Aviator at St. Clair County Airport. He flew for Standard Airways, flew charters for Via Air and flew for the March of Dimes. He flew Ralph Polovich and others from the Times Herald on photographic assignments as well as flying other business people from Port Huron to other destinations.

He was a member of Charles Hammond Post #8, American Legion and the Friends of St. Clair County Airport; a charter member of National Antique airplane Association, Michigan Antique Airplane Association, the local Antique Airplane Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Florence; his sons, Robert D. (Sheryl) and Edward R. (Rachel) Thoms; his grandchildren, Lindsay, Elizabeth, Edward, Robert and Aaron; his sister, Ruth A. Kammer of St. Clair; his halfbrother, Tim Thoms; his sistersinlaw, Marie Zimmer of Port Huron, Joanne (Don) Burgett of Marysville and Wanda Heering of Fulton, MS; his former daughterinlaw, Anna Thoms of Port Huron; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Lucille Marker; his brothersinlaw, Charles (Gladys) and Wilson Heering; and his sisterinlaw, Marion (Albert) Lepien.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Thursday in KarrerSimpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Douglas MaGinn, Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Peters will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his sons, Bob and Ed, Jim Marker, Gary Stockton, Bob Evans, Joe Kodet, Ronald Kammer and John Beattie.

Memorials in Bob's memory may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Peters or the American Heart Association.

Mabel Smith

Mabel C. Burkart Smith, 93, of Port Huron, wonderful mother and grandmother, died May 2, 2007.

She was born August 14, 1913 in Detroit to Nellie and Tom Jarvis. At the age of 7 she and her family moved to Port Huron where Mabel attended and graduated from St. Stephen High School in 1931.

Mabel married Frank E. Burkart June 14, 1935. Frank died October 27, 1962. She later married Edward Smith in 1972 and moved to South Bend, IN where she resided for 23 years. She returned to Port Huron in July of 1995.

Mabel was a founding member of St. Mary Church, member and past president of the League of Catholic Women, member of Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, past president of St. Mary's Altar Society and past member of the Legion of Mary.

Mabel is survived by her daughters, Marilyn (Joe) DeMaria, Nan Grebenok, Barbara (Doug) Nelson and Sally Krafft; her brother, Robert E. Jarvis; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; cousin, Rose Carpo and lifelong friend, Charlotte Jackman.

She was predeceased by her husbands, her son, Robert G. Burkart, her brother, Edwin Jarvis and her sister, Helen Keeslar.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Church, Port Huron. Rev. Fr. Simeon T. Iber, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visitation will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. at the church.

Memorials, in Mabel's memory, may be made to St. Mary's Capital Campaign.

Erwin Piechowiak

Erwin F. Piechowiak, 90, of Port Huron, died Wednesday, July 27, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital, unexpectedly.

He was born April 10, 1915 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and lived here since 1947.

He married Lorraine A. Ostrenga. She died Oct. 6, 2000.

Erwin retired in 1983 from U.S. Customs as port director of the Blue Water District. He was a 1937 graduate of the University of Wisconsin. He was a founding member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed golfing, shopping and especially working in his yard. Erwin's family was his life.

He is survived by his daughters, Mary T. (Dennis) Hart of St. Clair, Ann M. (Frederick) Schmidt of Grandville, Susan C. (Robert) Neirynck of Commerce Twp., Jane L. (Bruce) Taylor of Wixom, Ruth E. (Rick) Ayers of Port Huron and Christine D. (Darren) Baker of Port Huron; grandchildren, Douglas (Amy) Hart, Jennifer Hart, Melissa (Brian) Ruis, Christopher Schmidt, Stephanie Schmidt, Brian Schmidt, Laura Schmidt, Michelle Gayeski, Nicole (John) Boland, David Gayeski, Michael and Stephen Taylor, Hope and Jonathon Ayers and Alexis and Jessica Baker; greatgrandchildren, Dylan Thomas and Ryan Hart; and sisters, Dorothy and Marcella Piechowiak of Milwaukee.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Rebecca Schmidt and grandson, Matthew Ayers.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Stanley A. Wyczawski, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Adalbert cemetery, Milwaukee, WI.

Visiting hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at KarrerSimpson Funeral Home and 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday.

Memorials may be made to the University of Wisconsin Alumni.

Floyd McPhee

Floyd H. 'Mac' Hess McPhee, 79 of Port Huron, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2005 in Marwood Nursing & Rehab. He was born to Floyd H. Hess and Betty McIntyre McPhee on October 11, 1925 in Port Huron and attended the Port Huron schools graduating from Port Huron High School. He later attended Iowa State College and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On October 31, 1947, he married Betty J. Chisholm in Port Huron.

Mac worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years until his retirement. He was a long-time member of Grace Episcopal Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Seabury Club, and was a past member of the Junior Vestry and Senior Vestry.

He was a life member, Past Master, and Chaplin of Fort Gratiot Lodge #374 F & AM. He was a former member of Blue Water Scottish Rite Club, Valley of Detroit Moslem Temple, Huron Chapter #27 R.A.M., Port Huron Commandery #7 K.T., York Rite College, and Royal Select Masters #59.

Mac is survived his wife of nearly 58 years, Betty J. McPhee; his two sons, James H. McPhee of Oklahoma City, OK and Thomas J. (Elizabeth) McPhee of Scottsdale, AZ; four grandchildren, David, Lisa, and Andrew McPhee, all of Scottsdale, AZ and Laura (James) Swan of Pasadena, CA; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Wanda Collins, James & Joyce Chisholm, and Marjorie & Robert Greene, all of Port Huron; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, including a special son, David K. Smith.

Visitation will be on Saturday, September 17, 2005 in the Grace Episcopal Church parlor from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Robert P. Trask, Pastor of Grace Episcopal Church, will officiate. Fort Gratiot Lodge #374 F & AM will also conduct a memorial service. Inurnment will follow in the Grace Church Columbarium.

Contributions may be made in Mac's memory to Grace Episcopal Church or Bridge Builders Counseling. Arrangements are by Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St.

Judith Smerer

Judith Anne Smerer, 57, of Port Huron, MI, died Saturday, October 1, 2005 in Mercy Hospital after surviving breast cancer for 14 years.

She was born on October 31, 1947 in Wyandotte, MI and had lived here most of her life.

She married Danny J. Smerer on September 21, 1968 in Lakeport. He preceded her in death August 11, 1997.

Judy was a graduate of CroswellLexington high School. She worked at G.T.W.R.R., Head Start and was a Bus Driver for the St. Clair County I.S.D. She was involved with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. She enjoyed scrap booking, camping, gardening, playing cards and decorating for all the holidays. Judy was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.

She is survived by her daughters, Lynne M. (Kenneth) Lazzara of New Haven and Dana M. Smerer and Anthony Briggins of Port Huron; son, Nicholas J. Smerer of Port Huron; grandchildren, Colette A. and Natalie M. Lazzara and Bryce A. Briggins. Sisters, Monica (Patrick) Frame of Brownstown Twp; Mary Jo (Buddy) Stott of Lake Orion; Rita (Michael) Yestrepsky of Shelby Twp; Jackie (Edward) Zdrowski of Dearborn; her loving dogs Kodi and Zach and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers and sistersinlaw and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Isabelle Ciochon.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Stanley A. Wyczawski will officiate.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery, Croswell.

Visitation is 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the KarrerSimpson Funeral Home and 9 a.m. Thursday at the church. A rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Patrick Frame, Michael Yestrepsky, Edward Zdrowski, Buddy Stott, Edward Smerer and Brian Sheridan.

In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to the Wishes of the family.

Judy's family would like to thank the Doctor's and Staff at Blue Water Oncology for their compassionate care, treatment and concern over the years.

Bill Sanderson

Bill A. Sanderson, age 42, of Port Huron, died unexpectedly of natural causes on Sunday, September 18, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital. He was born February 9, 1963 in Port Huron and was a life long resident. Bill was an avid Red Wings fan. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his son and nephews. He is survived by his son, Harold Sanderson, mother, Doris Gutierrez, brother, Scott Gutierrez, sister Terri Gutierrez, and 3 special nephews, Nick Pelc, Scott Gutierrez Jr. and Sinjin Norris all of Port Huron. He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Sanderson, and his step-father, Roy Gutierrez. The funeral service will take place at 1 PM Friday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - South, 1230 7th Street with The Rev. Max Amstutz officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Harold Sanderson, Scott Gutierrez, Randy and Doug Helton, Eric Bodley, and John Olshove. Friends may visit Wednesday and Thursday from 7-9 PM in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to his family.
