Robert DeVary

Robert J. DeVary, 54, of Port Huron, died unexpectedly Sunday, October 23, 2005 in his home.

He was born April 30, 1951 in Edmore, Michigan and lived in Port Huron the past 35 years.

Bob was a graduate of St. Clair High School and earned bachelors and masters degrees from Wayne State University. He was executive director of Blue Water Center for Independent Living for the past 14 years with responsibility for the Thumb counties along with Wayne County. He was a member of St. Stephen Parish, the Wayne State Rehab committee, president of the Michigan Association of Independent Living Centers and a member of Wayne State University Alumni Association. Additionally he was a member of the Detroit Institute of Arts and past president of the Port Huron Beautification Committee. Bob was known as an advocate for persons with disabilities on a local, state and national level.

He is survived by his parents, Donald E. And Reva E. DeVary of Barryton, MI, his brother, Donald D. (Rebecca) DeVary of Sparta, MI, his sister, Katherine Ruth McMahan of Mt. Pleasant, a special friend, Neil E. Wyllie of Port Huron and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in KarrerSimpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Simeon T. Iber will officiate.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Memorials in his memory may be made to the Blue Water Center for Independent Living.

Donald Stein

Donald F. Stein, age 76, of Fort Gratiot, died Friday, September 30, 2005 in Barss Residential after a long illness.

He was born March 21, 1929 in Port Huron and was a life long resident.

He married Marjorie A. Engelgau on September 2, 1950 in St. Edward's on the Lake Catholic Church, Lakeport.

Don received his Bachelor's degree from Eastern Michigan University and a Master's degree from the University of Michigan. He was employed more than 40 years with Mueller Brass, retiring as Sales Manager.

Don was a professional musician playing at the St. Clair Inn, the Edison Inn and the Tally Ho. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie A. Stein of Fort Gratiot; daughters, Deborah (Daniel) Keary of Annandale, VA and Diane (George) Kandler of Brighton; his son, David (Janine) Stein of Port Huron; his daughter, Lisa (Ralph) Cannon of Greensburg, PA; his sons, Mark (Cherie) Stein of Delafield, WI and Christopher (Christine Ann) Stein of Livonia; his grandchildren, Samuel, Katherine and Emily Bristol, Neil, Matthew and Nora Kandler, Timothy and Amanda Stein, Andrea (Kevin) Hanton, Taylor Cannon, Christine and Rachael Stein, Nicole and Courtney Stein; his greatgranddaughter, Andromeda Stein; and his sister, Carol (Arthur) Brown of Whitmore Lake.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Nathaniel Stein.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Stanley A. Wyczawski, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at KarrerSimpson Funeral Home and 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today.

Don's son's and sonsinlaw will be his pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or Blue Water Hospice.

Olive Woods

Olive M. Woods, 96, formally of Port Huron, died October 13, 2005 at her home in Charlotte, Michigan. She was born to John and Jennie Fraleigh on February 24, 1909 in Jeddo, Michigan. She was a former Detroit resident and lived in Port Huron the past four years before moving to Charlotte this past summer. She was a member of Central Lakeport United Methodist Church.

Olive married Stanley R. Woods September 23, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan. She is survived by her niece and nephew Eva and Ken Menendez; daughter in law, Phyllis Shunn; six grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. She is also survived by nephews Calvin Gilbert, Raymond Fraleigh, Jack Pulley and Alger Fraleigh. Preceding her in death were her husband Stanley, son Robert, and foster son William Shunn.

The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2005 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock Street. The Rev. Ralph Barteld, Pastor of Central Lakeport United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery, Detroit. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Pulley, Raymond Fraleigh, Kenneth Menendez, Alger Fraleigh, Calvin Gilbert, and Richard Woods. Contributions may be made in Olive's memory to Central Lakeport United Methodist Church.

Sally Bajis

Sally Sutherland Bajis, age 72, of Twain Harte, California and San Felipe, Mexico, and formerly of Port Huron, died Friday, August 5, 2005 in Cincinnati, Ohio after a brief illness.

She was born April 7, 1933 in Sarnia, and lived in Port Huron for most of her life. Sally was a graduate of Hillsdale College. She enjoyed traveling.

Sally was a great mom, and will be greatly missed by her husband, children, and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years, George F. Bajis of Twain Harte, CA and San Felipe, Mexico; three daughters, Michele Hirschfield of Lexington, Hollie (Everett) Hyde of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Paige (Mike) Korth of North Carolina; a son, Scott (Carrie) Sutherland of Chicago; 19 grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary Catholic Church with The Rev. Fr. C. Paul Higdon officiating.

Friends may visit with the family one hour before the service at church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hope 4 Hyde. Envelopes will be available at church, or at Smith Family Funeral Home North, 1525 Hancock Street.

Harold Rumptz

Harold E. Rumptz, 74, of Marysville, died Sunday, September 11, 2005. in the Evangelical Home following a short illness.

He was born August 10, 1931 in Port Huron and lived here most of his life.

He married Loraine M. Bertram on August 27, 1955 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yale.

Harold's most recent job was with Taystee Bread. In the past he owned Smoker's Haven in downtown Port Huron. He was a truck driver for many years, and at one time was a cook's mate on the Edward B. Greene.

He was a member of B.P.O.E. #343 where he enjoyed golfing. He also was an avid reader and was a real peopleperson. He will be missed by many.

He is survived by his wife, Loraine M. Rumptz of Marysville; his son, Michael W. (Lola) Rumptz of Illinois; daughters, Catherine M. (Richard) Brubaker of Midland and Susan A. Lynch of Port Huron;; his stepgranddaughter, Tyla BurgeRumptz; grandsons, Taylor and Jacob Brubaker and Nathan Lynch; granddaughter, Brenna Lynch; sisters, Bernice J. Howard of Marysville, Donna M. (Hopp) Artman of Florida, and Shirley E. Locke of Marysville; brother, John H. Rumptz of Port Huron and sisterinlaw, Marbie Rumptz of Port Huron.

He was preceded in death by his brothersinlaw, Chuck Howard and Al Locke.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday (9/15) in St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph A. Gagnon will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today (9/13) and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday (9/14) at KarrerSimpson Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Nathan Lynch, Taylor Brubaker, Rob Rumptz, David Howard, Mark Howard and Skip Parisio.

Memorials may be made to the Evangelical Home or Non Hodgkins Lymphoma Foundation.

Bertha Rebitzke

Bertha R. Rebitzke, 93, of Port Huron, passed away Friday, July 8, 2005 in Marwood Nursing and Rehab.

She was born to George and Alice Duckworth on September 13, 1911 in Applegate, MI and worked at Erd Marshall's Store in Port Huron for many years.

She is survived by her daughter, Alice B. Rawley of Port Huron; her son, Norman "Pete" (Judy) Rebitzke of Red Oak, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; several greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold A. Rebitzke; two sons, Kenneth W. and Donald H. Rebitzke; and her soninlaw, William P. Rawley.

Interment has taken place in Kinney cemetery.

Cremation arrangements were by Smith Family Funeral HomeNorth, 1525 Hancock St.

Contributions may be made in Bertha's memory to Blue Water Hospice.

George Wilson

George went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 12, 2005. He was born March 1, 1929, in Port Huron; he was the only child of Raymond and Venus Wilson.

George graduated from Port Huron High School in 1947. He joined the Detroit Edison Power Co., in Port Huron as a co-op college student in 1946. In 1987, after 41 years, he retired as a service planner in the distribution engineering division. He attended St. Clair County Community College, studying Pre-Law and Business Administration. In 1950, he married Lois P. Winterberger, who preceded him in death in 1982. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve Division 9-88 during the Korean War as Electronic Technician, training on the Aircraft Carrier USS Roosevelt in 1952. As a member of Grace Episcopal Church (Port Huron), he served in choir, acolytes and Junior Vestry. He was a member of the Port Huron Little Theatre, performing in many stage productions. He also served as the first president of the Port Huron Figure Skating Club and was a member of Port Huron Junior Chamber of Commerce. Moving to Green Valley after retirement in 1987, he married Leah Hubble. As an active member in the Society of American Magicians, he loved to perform magic at local schools, community functions, and corporate events. Throughout his life, he loved the outdoors and travel, visiting most of North America including Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. As a certified SCUBA diver, he enjoyed diving in the Bahamas.

George is survived by his wife Leah Wilson; daughters Diane Linsenbigler (Martin) of Tucson, and Janet Wilson of Port Huron; sons Steven Wilson (Toni) of Santee, Calif., Thomas Wilson (Karen) of Port Huron; step-daughters Vickie DiGiso (Steven) and Jackie Davis (Joe), both of Amado; seven grandchildren: Joshua, Adam and Amanda Wilson; Genissa Linsenbigler, Chris Rech, Tim and Kelly Hara; two step-grandchildren Jessica and Jeremy Kornacki; and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations may be made to V.N.A. - Visiting Nurses Association of Port Huron in memory of George R. Wilson. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday. Aug. 27, 2005 at 11 a.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home, 1525 Hancock St., Port Huron.

Grace Kar

Grace L. Kar, 91 of Port Huron, passed away Monday, August 8, 2005 after a long illness.

She was born April 18, 1914 in Salem Ohio, daughter of the late Nicholas and Vera Boariu.

She married Louis J. Kar, Jr. October 28, 1939. Louis preceded her in death October 30, 1986.

Grace was a devoted mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother. She loved to cook and bake and invite family and friends for a meal or a cup of tea.

She and Louis were founding members of St. Christopher Church in Marysville. Grace also owned and operated Kar's Grocery Store on Ravenswood Road for several years.

She is survived by her sons, Louis (Eleanor) Kar of Howard City, MI and Dr. Ronald (Ann) Kar of Sarasota, FL; her daughter, Jacqueline (Tim) Ritter of Fort Gratiot; her seven grandchildren, Joel (Cari) Kar, Christopher (Kathryn) Kar, Karen (Kevin) Holman, Krista (Michael) Harmon, Katherine (Chris) Keiser, Kevin (Marie) Kar and Kelley (Bob) Osterman; 17 greatgrandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Schattler; a sisterinlaw, Mary Farrington; special friends, Roland Francis and Dale Denotter; and special caregivers, Connie Paruch, Lila and Josh Eakins and Sally Krafft.

Grace was preceded in death by her twin infant children, Patrick and Patricia in 1945; sisters, Anna Hrisca, Aurelia Covrea, Mary Rush and Viola Lukitsch.

Grace's family has chosen to celebrate her life and invite you to share her memory and visit on Friday (August 12) from 2 until 8 p.m. at KarrerSimpson Funeral Home. A prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m.

Additional visitation will be held Saturday at St. Christopher Catholic Church, Marysville beginning at 10 a.m. Mass of the Resurrection will take place at 11 a.m. with Fr. Arthur R. Baranowski presiding. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery, Port Huron.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to St. Christopher Church.

Esther Wilke

Esther M. (Herman) Wilke, 89, went to be with her Savior on September 17, 2005 in St. Clair.

She was born December 6, 1915 in Port Hope, and has lived here most of her life.

She married Frank O. Wilke on March 15, 1935 in Port Huron. He preceded her in death on September 21, 1970.

Esther was a past member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and a current member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing cards and especially Euchre.

She is survived by her children, Janet KirbyJulian (Ray) of Marysville, Gordon L. (Irene) Wilke of St. Clair, Norman C. (Barbara) Wilke of Redmond, WA, Victor J. (Rosemary) Wilke and Barbara (Larry) Eagen, both of Marysville; numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; her brother, Ted Herman of Port Huron; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth C. Wilke and grandson, Rodney M. Kirby.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday in Pilgrim Lutheran Church. The Rev. Bill Bendert, Pastor will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverlawn cemetery.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at KarrerSimpson Funeral Home and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at church.

Memorials may be made to Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

Gordon Russell

Gordon 'Russ' 'Guka' Russell, age 82, of Fort Gratiot died Friday, September 02, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital after a long illness. He was born October 23, 1922 in Memphis, Michigan, and lived in the Port Huron area for most of his life. He served his country during WWII. Russ worked for Mueller Brass for over 30 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, including; snowmobiling, motorcycling, and especially fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Russell of Fort Gratiot, 2 daughters, Marilyn 'Chee Chee' (Rodge) Radigan of Jeddo, and Jane (Mike) Werner of North Street, 6 grandchildren, Lori (Jeff) Parent, Scott (Margaret) Werner, Amy (Rob) Farrell, Jill (Bill) Price, Marlo (David) Sylver, and Ryan (Rachel) Radigan, 9 great-grandchildren, Scott and Kyle Werner, Rachael and Robbie Farrell, Chad and Brett Parent, Gunnar and Rocco Price, and Hannah Radigan, a brother, Stanley (Faye) Russell, and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Russ's life will take place at 2 PM Sunday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street with Elder Dave Teeple of the Port Huron - Sarnia Restoration Branch officiating. Friends may visit Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Port Huron - Sarnia Restoration Branch.
