May 17, 1914 - May 16, 2002

Rosalina B. Birs, 87, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, died on Thursday, May 16, 2002, at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 18th, at 7:30 p.m. from Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will take place at the Flagler Memorial Park in Miami, Florida.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Friday, May 17th, from 5 to 8 p.m. and at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, May 18th, from 6:30 p.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel or the church.

Rosalina was born May 17, 1914 in Key West, Florida, the daughter of Samuel William Sawyer and Pilar (Pinochet) Sawyer. Rosalina received her formal education in a convent in Key West. Rosalina married Louis B. Birs who preceded her in death on April 12, 1989.

Rosalina is survived by her daughter Yvette Crandall (Warren) of Mt. Pleasant; 6 grandchildren, Deborah Andres of Walled Lake, Rebecca Crandall and Joe Foltz of Mt. Pleasant, Warren Matthew Crandall (Karen) of Mt. Pleasant, Julie Crandall of Traverse City, Andrea Daisy (Mark) of Mt. Pleasant and Lucas Crandall of Chicago, Illinois; 11 great grandchildren; and 1 brother, Alfredo Sawyer of Rockhill, South Carolina.

Rosalina was preceded in death by her husband and 6 brothers and sisters.

Cavanaugh, Gladys (Bobbie)
July 26, 1927 - May 10, 2002

Gladys (Bobbie) Cavanaugh, 74, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Friday, May 10, 2002, at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral Services will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 13, at Clark Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Nancy Casey-Fulton officiating. Interment will follow in Flint Memorial Park cemetery in Mt. Morris, Michigan.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Sunday, May 12 , from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Special memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Bobbie was born on July 26, 1927, in Flint to Carl J. and Margurite H. (Edmonds) Massey. She married Michael M. Cavanaugh on July 7, 1960, and they resided in Mt. Morris, Michigan, until they retired to live in Newaygo. After her husband Michael passed away, she relocated to Mt. Pleasant. Both Bobbie and Michael were very involved with VFW activities both in Mt. Morris and Newaygo and she was a member of the Ladies of the Auxiliary VFW. When relocating to Mt. Pleasant, Bobbie transferred to the Ladies Auxiliary VFW in Mt. Pleasant. She was past president of the Michigan Ladies Auxiliary M.O.C.A.

She is survived by one daughter, Carol (Robert) Burns of Waterford; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She is survived by brothers Wilbur (Mary) Massey, Raymond (Jan) Becker, Dennis (Bonnie) LaCross, Gerald (Sandra) LaCross, and Stuart LaCross; sisters Dorothy (Bob) Gerholz, Bonnie (Al) Robertson, Barbara (Paul) Hoitink, and Beverly Hoitink; a very special niece, Connie Kerby; several other nieces, nephews and cousins; sister-in-law Marie Massey, brother-in-law John Sweebe; and special friend Ruby Shawboose.

Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Michael, her stepfather Raymond Becker, brother Royal (Marie) Massey, and sister Shirley (John) Sweebe.

Bobbie had noted in the information to be included in this obituary that she felt that these people named above were very special to her and they had made her life happy and she loved them very much.

Ferris, Gail Marie
February 2, 1949 - May 6, 2002

Gail M. Ferris, age 53, of Mt. Pleasant died on Monday, May 6, 2002, at the Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center in Gladwin, Michigan.

A Funeral Service for Gail will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 10, at the Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant. Charles Johnson will officiate with interment to follow in the Chippewa Township cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel today, from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, May 9, 2002 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Gail was born February 2, 1949, in Wyandotte, Michigan, the daughter of A. D. and Dorothy (Thompson) Harrison. She married Kenneth Wagner Ferris. Gail was a volunteer at the Commission on Aging. She enjoyed knitting and spending time with her grandchildren.

Gail is survived by her parents, A.D. and Dorothy Harrison; children, Kenneth (Shelia) Ferris of Farwell, MI., Steve (Evelin) Ferris of Beaverton, MI, and Tara (Eric) Ames of Mt. Pleasant, MI.; 10 grandchildren; two brothers and four sisters.

Gail was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth and one brother.

Archer, Harper E.
April 13, 1908 - May 6, 2002

Harper E. Archer, age 94, of Traverse City died on Monday, May 6th at the Bortz Health Care Center in Traverse City, Michigan.

A Funeral Service for Harper will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 10th, at the Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant. The Rev. Benton Heisler will officiate with interment to follow in the Riverside cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Friday, May 10th, from 10 a.m. until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Episcopal Church Building Fund Temple, Texas or the donor’s choice.

Harper was born April 13, 1908, in Rosebush, Michigan, the son of Thomas E. and Emily E. (House) Archer. Harper married Vivian Johnston on December 24, 1936 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. He worked as a postal employee, retiring after 30 years of service. Harper helped start up the Mt. Pleasant Little League and was a life member of the First United Methodist Church.

Harper is survived by his wife Vivian; two sons, Ron (Kay) Archer of Traverse City, Michigan and Richard (Virginia Kay) Archer of Temple, Texas; his grandchildren, Mark, Scott and Craig Archer, Amy (Archer) Alert and Angela Archer and 7 great grandchildren; one brother Hubert G. Archer of Fort Pierce, Florida and one sister Emily Naumes of Mt. Pleasant, MI.

Harper was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Emily (House) Archer.

Linn, Sarah R.
July 20, 1904 - May 3, 2002

Sarah R. Linn, 97, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2002, at Maplewood Assisted Living Center.

Cremation has taken place, with interment to be in the Oakwood cemetery. There will be a Memorial Service in Sharon, PA, at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Sarah was born on July 20, 1904, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Mott and Bessie (Collins) Robertson. She married Edward V. Linn. Sarah graduated from Grove City College in Grove City, PA, with a Bachelor’s of Literature. She was employed as a clerk in a children’s store. Sarah served on the Alumni Board of Grove City College. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Sarah was the president of the Hospital Auxiliary in Sharon, PA, and was a past worthy matron of the O.E.S.

Sarah is survived by her children, Marcia Johengen of Mt. Pleasant and Mott Linn (Ruth) of Harleysville, PA; grandchildren, Edward A. Johengen II, Carole Battaglia, Mott Johengen, Mott Linn, Charles Linn, and Diane Johengen; great-grandchildren Marcy Battaglia, Spencer Johengen, Natalie Linn and Gavin Linn.

Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers, and a sister.

Jones, Ruth Vyetta
April 13, 1933 - May 3, 2002

Ruth Vyetta Jones, 69, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2002, at Gratiot Community Hospital.

Funeral Services for Ruth will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 6, at Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant, with Pastor Dale A. Golden of Coomer United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Union cemetery, Isabella County.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Saturday, May 4, from 7-9 p.m., and on Sunday, May 5, from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Great Lakes Renal Network. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Ruth was born April 13, 1933, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Leland and Alberta (Thatcher) Darling. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1951. Ruth married Jack R. Jones on June 26, 1953. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting and fishing.

Ruth is survived by her husband Jack Jones of Mt. Pleasant; her children Marsha Lemon (Jerry) of Flushing, Randal Jones and Mary Kaye Plume of Shepherd, Lucinda Jones of Mt. Pleasant, and Thomas Allen Jones of Shepherd; her 2 grandchildren, Steven Lemon and Tracie Lemon; her brothers Jack Darling (Phyllis) of Mt. Pleasant, Richard Darling of Mt. Pleasant, and Francis Darling of California; and her sisters Donna Grace, Letha Wolfe, both of Mt. Pleasant, Barb Esch (Lynn) of Mecosta, and Peg Hayward of Indiana.

Ruth was preceded in death by brother Donald and sisters Betty White and Velma Mullikin

Cook, Alvin "Bo" J.
January 18, 1907 - May 2, 2002

Alvin “Boo” J. Cook, 95, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Holland, passed away on May 2, 2002, at the Laurels in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral Services for Alvin will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 6, at The Third Reformed Church in Holland, with the Rev. Bill Unzicker officiating. Interment will follow in the Pilgrim Home cemetery in Holland.

The family will receive friends at the Notier-VerLee-Langeland Funeral Chapel on Sunday, May 5, from 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions in memory of Alvin may be made to the Third Reformed Church. Envelopes will be available at the Notier-VerLee-Langland Funeral Chapel in Holland or Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant.

Alvin was born on January 18, 1907, in Holland, Michigan, the son of Gerard and Gertrude (Hidding) Cook. He graduated from Hope College with a teaching certificate and taught in Whitehall. Alvin married Ruth Marian Bolhuis on July 1, 1933, in Holland. He owned A.J. Cook Lumber Company from 1949-1977. Alvin was a deacon with the Third Reformed Church and a member of the Greater Consistory. He was a Holland Public School board member and a member of the Exchange Club of Holland. Alvin was an avid trout fisherman and loved to hunt pheasant and partridge.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Ruth M. Cook, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Holland; his children James D. Cook (Samira) of Ridgewood, NJ, and Connie Holland (Don) of Mt. Pleasant; 5 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Alvin was preceded in death by his brother and 2 sisters.

Weller, Jr., Carl E.
May 14, 1940 - May 2, 2002

Carl Elmer Weller, Jr., passed away May 2, 2002, at 7:15 p.m. in his own home at 6281 Mill Street, Riverdale, Michigan.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Weller; 2 sons, Carl Weller III and his wife Tina, Craig Weller and his wife Gail; 3 step-sons, Bob Bennett, Bill Bennett, and Randy Bennett; 1 step-daughter Kathy Robinette; 2 grandchildren, Carl Weller IV and LeeAnn Weller; 2 sisters, Karen Castillo and DeeAnn Kubitza. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Lenora Weller and 1 granddaughter Amanda Weller.

His body will rest at Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Clark Funeral Chapel.

Nelson, Michael
April 10, 1945 - April 17, 2002

Michael Nelson, 57, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant.

Cremation has taken place.

Michael was born on April 10, 1945, in Chicago, IL. He had worked as a general maintenance laborer.

Servoss, Marjorie Battles
February 1, 1918 - April 16, 2002

Marjorie Battles Servoss, age 84, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Tuesday, April 16th, at the Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 19th, at 11 a.m. from the Clark Funeral Chapel. Rev. John Osborn will officiate, with interment in the Riverside cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Thursday, April 18th, from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. A Rebekah Lodge Memorial Service will be held on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Central Michigan or to the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Camp in Baldwin, Michigan. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Marjorie was born February 1, 1918, in Emerson Twp., Gratiot Co., Michigan, the daughter of Joseph Battles and Blanche (Pugsley) Battles. Marjorie graduated from Alma College and had attended Central State Teachers College. She taught in the Shepherd Public School System and had substitute taught in the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools. On June 18, 1941 she married Gerald Servoss. Marjorie was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, the L.E.A., the Wooden Shoe Installation Team with the Odd Fellow Lodge and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Marjorie loved flowers and being with her family.

Marjorie is survived by her husband Gerald Servoss of Mt. Pleasant, her daughter Linda Doerr and husband Edward of Mt. Pleasant; 2 grandsons, Scott Doerr of Grand Rapids and Douglas Doerr (Marie) of Kentwood; 2 great grandchildren, Rachael and Chloe Doerr; 2 sisters-in-law, Marja Brownson of Mt. Pleasant and Marilynne Battles of Alma; and 2 nieces and 3 nephews.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister, Josephine McKee and 1 brother, Frederick Battles.

Smoke, Lena Fay
October 28, 1915 - April 13, 2002

Lena Fay Smoke, age 86, of Mt. Pleasant died on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral Services for Lena will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 19, at Schoedinger-North Chapel in Columbus, Ohio, with Rev. Ron Botts officiating. Interment will follow in the Pataskala cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Shoedinger-North Chapel on Thursday, April 18, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Lena was born on October 28, 1915, in Beverly, OH, the daughter of Christopher and Lilly (Black) Reitler. She married Argyle Smoke who predeceased her in 1993. She was a member of the Trinity United Church in Christ of Columbus.

Lena is survived by her son Jerry Smoke (Linda) of Mt. Pleasant; 3 grandchildren, Laurel Smoke of Chicago, IL, Amber Smoke of New York City, NY, and Ian Smoke of Mt. Pleasant.

Lena was preceded in death by her husband and one sister.
