Shirley Hamill

Shirley H. Hamill, 82, died Thursday, August 11, 2005 in Marwood Nursing and Rehab.

Shirley was born November 11, 1922 in Detroit, MI and lived in St. Clair since the mid1960s.

She married Gordon Hamill on May 12, 1944 in Detroit. He passed away on December 22, 1989.

Shirley was employed at Kresge National Headquarters and later Diamond Crystal Salt Company for 20 years. She was an avid reader, enjoyed being with her family, quilting, and had a strong devotion to her employment. After retirement she and her husband enjoyed traveling to the Rocky Mountains.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Kathleen S. (Thomas) Wittliff of Port Huron; grandson, Gordon Joseph (Marybeth) Stamplis of New York City; granddaughter, Elizabeth Lynne Stamplis (Brian Moore) of Toledo; grandson, William Michael (Amanda) Stamplis of St. Clair; and greatgrandchildren, David Stamplis, Kayla Stamplis, and Seth Moore.

Burial will be in Hillside cemetery, St. Clair.

Memorials may be made to Lighthouse Hospice or the American Heart Association.

Irene Askar

Irene M. Askar, age 88, of Port Huron passed on to her Heavenly Father on August 13, 2005. She was born July 28, 1917 in Deckerville, the daughter of the late John and Mary Harris. She married George F. Askar on December 31, 1932. He preceded her death on July 8, 1994. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and a Mercy Hospital volunteer for over 50 years. Irene was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She was an avid golfer, and enjoyed playing bridge with her many close friends. Always ready to cook or bake, she leaves many happy memories with her family and friends. She will be forever remembered by her kindness and great love of life. She will be dearly missed by her 2 sons, Fr. George Askar Jr. of Kokomo, Indiana and D.J. (Kay Brown-Askar) Askar of Harrison Township, a daughter, Linda Askar-Stoldt of Fort Gratiot, 7 grandchildren, Keith Askar, Mary (Chuck) Brotzke, Denise (Kevin) Beardsley, Karen (Darrell) Jacques, Bernadette (Rod) King, Gary (Sharon) Stoldt, Ryan (Erika) Stoldt, 13 great-grandchildren, Nicole (Kevin) VanBelle, Ashley, Heather, and Courtney Kubecki, Taylor, Logan, and Connor Jacques, Karissa King, Megan and Jenna Stoldt, Austin Plouse, Chandler and Trinity Stoldt, one great-great grandson, Caleb VanBelle, her sister Erma, a sister-in-law, Virginia Engelgau, several nieces, nephews, and her life long friend, Helen David. She was preceded in death by a brother, Adam Harris, a sister, Katherine Fisher, and a grandson, Douglas Patton.

There will be a funeral mass at 10 AM Tuesday in St. Mary Catholic Church with her son, Fr. George Askar Jr. concelebrating with Fr. Stanley Wyczawski. A graveside committal service will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery. Her grandchildren will be pallbearers. Friends may visit today, August 16th from 1-9 PM in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street. Fr. George will lead a prayer service at 7 PM tonight in the funeral home.

Friends may also visit on Tuesday beginning at 9 AM at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary Academy.

Judith Nowak

Judith A. Nowak, age 72, of Fort Gratiot died suddenly of natural causes on Sunday, October 23, 2005 in Port Huron Hospital. She was born March 14, 1933 in Port Huron to the late Roy and Helen McMeeken, and was a life long resident.

She married Roy E. Nowak on February 26, 1955 in Port Huron. Judy graduated from the University of Michigan in 1954 with a degree in Dental Hygiene. She was an active member of the Port Huron Garden Club, the Port Huron Beautification Commission, and the Port Huron Museum. She was also a member of the Stratford Festival and the Detroit Institute of Arts. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of various bridge clubs in Port Huron. Judy had a life long love of the arts, including music, opera, and painting. She and Roy enjoyed traveling, and made several Port Huron Museum Trips abroad with friends. She is survived by her husband Roy E. Nowak of Fort Gratiot, 2 sons, Stephen G. Nowak of Marysville, and Bradley A. (Shelly) Nowak of White Lake, 2 daughters, Alison M. (Tom) Mandeville of Morrisonville, NY, and Heather A. (David) Haynes of Port Huron, 7 grandchildren, Jason, Ashley, and Andrea Nowak of White Lake, Beth and Connie Mandeville of Morrisonville, NY, and Natalie and Jacob Haynes of Port Huron, a sister, Gayle Barnum of Lake Wales, Florida.

A memorial service will be held at 1 PM Friday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street with The Rev. Max Amstutz, Port Huron Hospital Chaplain officiating. Friends may visit with the family beginning at 11 AM Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Katherine Rice

Katherine Louise Rice, 91, died Wednesday, September 14, 2005.

She was born August 7th, 1914 in Port Huron To Fred and Agnes McCormick.

Her husband Emory H. "Bud" Rice died September 12, 1982.

Katherine was a homemaker and worked as a salesperson at the R & S and Raetzel's Shoe Store. She liked to sew and knit and was active at the Senior Citizens Center, working on the newsletter and playing cards.

After her husbands retirement, they moved to Lake, MI in Clare County for the summers and Ruskin, FL for the winters. She moved back to Port Huron after his death in 1982.

Katherine is survived by a son and daughterinlaw, Richard E and Judith A. Rice of Port Huron; sister, Mabel Willert of Flint; grandsons, Timothy (Beatrice) Rice of Cohutta, GA, Robert (Francine) Rice of Port Huron and Timothy Dandron of Port Huron; granddaughter, Theresa Schrieber of Las Vegas, NV; five greatgrandchildren and three great greatgrandchildren; sistersinlaw, Bergetta Phelps of Jasper, GA, Marjorie Regis of Sedona, AZ and Nina Evans of Daytona Beach, FL; several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Charlotte A. Dandron; brother, Russell McCormick and sister, Eunice Paton.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at KarrerSimpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Stanley A. Wyczawski, pastor of St. Mary Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday (9/15) at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be David Willert, Don McCormick, Gene Downing, Robert Dell, Charles Rowse and Robert Morris. Honorary pallbearers are Fred, Jerry and Jim McCormick.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimers Research.

Harrison Endicott

Harrison J. Endicott, 76 of Port Huron and formerly of Kentucky, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, October 19, 2005. He was born to Norman and Jenny Endicott on June 14, 1929 in Wayne, West Virginia and served six years in the U.S. Army.

Harrison always enjoyed being outdoors and especially loved to hunt and fish.

He is survived by his seven children, Joyce Bailey, Darlene (Bruce) Stacey, Janet Sears, Brenda (Dave) Woodruff, William (Beverly) Endicott, Robert (Terri) Endicott, and Tim (Tammy) Endicott; 27 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; his brother, Arthur (Faye) Endicott of Kentucky; four sisters, Loraine Sexton of Ohio, Martha Mulvany of Michigan, Frances Stough of Ohio, and Estella (Bruce) Smith of West Virginia; many nieces & nephews; and his beloved dog, Queenie.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Lena Endicott, a daughter, Rose Nyman, and a son, Randy Endicott.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, 2005 in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. Interment will be in Tobacco Township cemetery, Beaverton, MI at a later time.

Contributions may be made in Harrison's memory to his family.

Barbara Davis

Barbara Ann Davis, 68 of Port Huron, passed away Wednesday, July 18, 2007 in Mercy Hospital. She was born to Ray and Esther Lester on February 18, 1939 in Port Huron and married Robert F. Davis on Sept. 14, 1957.

She loved spending time with her family, especially at Sunday and holiday dinners. The entire Christmas season was very special to her. She was always helping people out if she could. She was very fond of taking bus trips up north.

Barbara is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Robert F. Davis; her five children, Debra Davis, Laura Thomas, and Robbie (Kathy) Davis, all of Port Huron. Kathy (Tony) Robertson of St. Clair, and Janice (Ronald) Pennell of Smiths Creek; ten grandchildren, Kristy, Kourtney, Kelly, & Kandace Thomas, David Cesefske, Bailey Pennell, Andrew & Cameron Robertson, and Robbie & Kaylee Davis; two great grandchildren, Keyshawn & Keiara; her brother, William (Marian) Lester of Marysville; two sisters, Joanne Gordon & Edith Mae Rome, both of Port Huron; several nieces & nephews; her two dogs, Charlie & Pal; and her cat, Meow.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and her twin brothers, Ronald and Donald Lester.

Visitation will be on Sunday, July 22, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Salvation Army Citadel with visitation one hour prior to the service. Major Tim Meyer will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the wishes of Barbara's family.

Carl Covey

Carl E. "Unc" Covey, 82, of North Street, passed away in his residence on Sunday, October 14, 2007 following a long illness. He was born to Hiram and Dora Covey on December 13, 1924 in Utica, MI.

He proudly served with the 134th AAA Gun Battalion of the U.S. Army in WWII, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. On August 10, 1946, Carl married Dorothy Morrison in Port Huron.

Carl worked at Peerless Cement Co. from 1947 until 1972, when the plant closed. The following year he began his job at Wirtz Mfg. Co., retiring in 1988.

He was a life member of both the Charles Hammond Post #8 American Legion and the May O'Brien Post #8465 VFW, and never missed attending the U.S. Army 134th AAA Gun Battalion annual reunions. He was an avid bingo player and enjoyed visiting the casinos.

Carl is survived by his three children, Carlene (Tom) Labadie of Kimball Twp., Kevin (Sharon) Covey of North Street, and Barbara (Dale Riffenburg) Covey of Port Huron; five grandchildren, Angela (Al) Fenner, Jason (Michelle) Labadie, Carissa Smith, Stephanie Labadie, and Steven Smith; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Al Jr., Liberty, Casandra, and Samantha; three step-grandchildren, Amanda, Branden, and Dennis Riffenburg; a sister, Virginia Meyers of Alpena; and several nieces and nephews; including a special niece and her husband, Sandra and George Lasky.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, who passed away on May 23, 1992. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Nelson Covey, and a sister, Helen Harris.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. The Rev. Joel Puntigam of Westminster Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery under the direction of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

Contributions may be made in Carl's memory to the Disabled American Veterans.

Marion Briggs

Marion "Mae" Briggs, 78, passed away Friday, August 10, 2007 after a long battle with cancer. She was born August 15, 1928 in Detroit to Leon and Charlotte Briggs.

She is survived by her children, Carol Bellow, Brad (Sandy) Walker and Kurt (Marcie) Walker, all of Marysville, John (Marina) Bellow of Holly, Perry Bellow of Saginaw, MI; her siblings, Helen Bergstrom and Leon "Bud" (Betty) Briggs, both of Marysville, Charlotte (Art) DelVero of Beverly Hills, MI, William (Barb) Briggs of Houghton, MI and Judy Griffith of Richmond, IN; 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 15, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home in Port Huron. There will be a service following the visitation at the funeral home.

Esther Becker

Esther L. Becker, 102, of Port Huron and formerly of Harper Woods, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 31, 2007. Hallelujah! She was born to Rudolph and Emma Pohl on February 18, 1905 in a home near Forestville.

Esther attended the Snay School in her horse and buggy. She was baptized & confirmed in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Forestville, MI in both English and German. While working for a dentist in Detroit, Esther was introduced to and married Millard Becker Sr. in St. Thomas Lutheran Church, Detroit, on April 20, 1927.

Esther was primarily a homemaker but did work in several offices and in sales. After moving from Harper Woods in the 1990s, she resided at Porthaven Manor in Port Huron, and lastly at Evangelical Home-Port Huron. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her two sons, Millard (Dianne) Becker Jr. of Fort Gratiot and Donald (Linda) Becker of Silver Spring, MD; five grandchildren, Craig Swedberg of Oahu, Hawaii, Steven Becker of Olney, MD, Tracy (Keith) Stouffer of Mt. Airy, MD, Matthew Becker of Detroit, and Paul Becker of Portland, OR; two step-grandchildren, Richard Price of Harrison Twp. and Rebecca Price of Port Huron; and two great grandchildren, Devin & Kelly Stouffer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Becker Sr. (June 1979) and eight brothers & sisters.

Visitation will be in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. on Wednesday, Sept. 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 6 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7 in Faith Lutheran Church with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Pastor Timothy Eichberger will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery, Detroit at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Esther's grandsons will serve as her pallbearers. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Faith Lutheran Church, Port Huron, Bethany Lutheran Church, Detroit, or Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN.

Ruth Angerbrandt

Ruth E. Angerbrandt, age 81 of Port Huron, died Thursday, July 12, 2007 in her home after a long illness. She was born October 20, 1925 in Bad Axe, and lived in Port Huron for most of her life. She married Arthur Angerbrandt on January 19, 1946 in Port Huron.

Ruth volunteered for many years at Marwood Nursing and Rehab with her friend Emma Wahl. She was a lifetime member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and loved to read her Bible. Ruth and her husband enjoyed helping out at the Furness Dairy Farm, and watching Detroit Tiger Baseball. Ruth also enjoyed going to garage sales with her dear friend Vicky Hand. She loved flowers, especially geraniums.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Arthur Angerbrandt of Port Huron; a daughter, Brenda (Richard) Wahl of Fort Gratiot; 2 sons, William A. (Karen) Angerbrandt of Fort Gratiot, and Dennis (Donna) Angerbrandt of Ruby; 9 grandchildren, Duane (Laurie) Wahl, Troy (Michelle) Wahl, Jeffrey (Nancy) Wahl, Jodie Stewart, Amanda (Ron) Erway, Aaron Angerbrandt, Sarah (Jim) Marek, Staci Koenig, and Dennis Angerbrandt II; 7 great-grandchildren; a brother, Elgin (Joan) Mahosky; 3 sisters, Luella Barringer, Grace Cedarvall, and Linda (Lynn) Yarger; sister-in-law, Fern Angerbrandt; mother-in-law, Beatrice "Toots" Angerbrandt; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 5 sisters and 2 brothers.

Visitation with the family will be Monday (7/16) from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with Evangelist Harold Hastings officiating. Her ashes will be interred in Lakeside cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wadhams Grove Community of Christ.

Leo Visga

Leo J. Visga, 83 of Smiths Creek, died Friday, May 25, 2007 in Medilodge of St. Clair after a long illness.

He was born November 6, 1923 in Detroit but was a life- long resident of the Blue Water area.

Leo is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Smiths Creek; son, Robert Visga of Belleview, FL; daughters, Christine (Roger) St. Gelais of Pt. Edward, ON, Diane (Michael) Fallmann of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Merry (Daniel) Thomas of Pt. Ed- ward, ON and Martha (Daniel) Dorland of Jeddo; nine grand- children; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Bernice (Eugene) Melczarczyk Irene (Robert) Curtis and Leona Rosbury; brother, James (Amy) Visga and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Jeffrey Visga.

Visitation for Leo is 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday (5/29) in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A Scriptural Rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Christo- pher Church, Marysville. Fr. Arthur Baranowski will pre- side.

Cremation will take place.

Memorials may be made to Medilodge of St. Clair.

A special thank you to the staff of Medilodge for their at- tention and care.

Muriel Armstrong

Muriel G. Armstrong, 86, of Port Huron, passed away Monday, May 7, 2007 after a brief illness.

She was born to Alexander and Minnie Christian on November 12, 1920 in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Canada.

She became a war bride when she met and married Creighton Armstrong during World War II. They were hap- pily married for nearly 53 years until Creighton's death in 1996.

Muriel is survived by her children, Ralph (Eileen) Arm- strong of Georgetown, DE, Bill (Mickey) Armstrong of Saline, Jeanie Brown of Port Huron, David (Sandy) Armstrong of Port Huron, and Susan (George) Wells of Fort Gratiot; her grandchildren, Monica (Reese) Buchman and Scott Armstrong of Dover, DE, Cheryl (Mark) Steigerwald of Lakewood, OH, Todd Arm- strong of Saline, Dave (Renee Aiken) Armstrong of Port Hu- ron, Katie (Eric) Cokonougher of Macomb, and Kristi Wells and Patrick Wells, both of Fort Gratiot; and her great-granddaughters, Riley Buchanan of Dover, DE, and Emerald and Maggie Higgins of Fort Gratiot. Also surviving are three sisters and many nieces and nephews in Newfound- land.

Funeral services were held today in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. followed by burial in Lakeside cemetery.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the charity of the donor's choice.
