William Ryan

William H. Ryan, 83 of Port Huron went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 6, 2007 in Marwood Nursing & Rehab following a long courageous battle with Alzheimer's.

Bill was born October 6, 1923 in Port Huron son of the late William P. and Barbara (Cunningham) Ryan.

Bill served in the U.S. Army during WWII with O.S.S in Washington D.C and Ceylon.

He was an avid reader, traveled extensively through out Europe, and enjoyed boating and family gatherings on the beach. He was active in Port Huron Minor Hockey as a coach, board member and was a long time volunteer in support of the Silver Stick Hockey Tournament.

Bill is survived by his son, Geof (Patti) Ryan of Port Huron; daughters, Toodie May-Ryan of Port Huron, Marsha (Jim) Hicks of Port Huron, Julie Ryan of Port Huron and Betsy (Joe) Vandervest of Port Huron; grandchildren, Corey Ryan, Kristin May-Tart, Ryan May, Trevor and Kyle Hicks, Erica Ryan Arnold and Murphy Vandervest.

Bill was preceded in death by the mother of his children Ruth R. Ryan and sister Dorothea Young.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday (5/10) in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Brian K. Cokonougher will officiate.

Following Bill's wishes cremation will take place.

Visiting hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday (5/9) in the funeral home.

Memorials in memory of Bill, may be given to Blue Water Hospice.

Florence Fezatte

Florence Viola Fezatte, 69 of Marysville, died Saturday, May 12, 2007 following a long battle with cancer and illness, surrounded by her family. She was born to John and Louise Fanion on April 24, 1938 in Sandusky, MI, graduated from Marysville High School in 1956, and married Irvin H. Fezatte May 17, 1958 in Port Huron.

She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother to her family and she loved her pet cats that lived with her.

Florence is survived by her husband of 49 years, Irvin H. Fezatte; three children, Teresa (Mark) Mobley of Lapeer, and Lora Fezatte & Guy A. Fezatte, both of Marysville; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Gregory, & Emily Rose, all of Lapeer, and Rodney Rose of Yale; two brothers, John (Ina) Fanion and George (Norma) Fanion, both of Kimball Twp.; two brothers-in-law, Richard (Ruth) Fezatte of Lansing and Alvin Fezatte of West Branch.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends from through the years. She is also survived by her five rescued cats, Dexter, Tiger, Mom Cat, Reo, & Aunt Kitty.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Louise Fanion in 1972, her father, John Fanion Sr. in 1990, her sister, Nancy Smith-page in 1988, and a nephew, Denny Smith in 2002.

The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. The Rev. Max Amstutz, Port Huron Chaplin, will officiate. Inurnment will be in Marysville Riverlawn cemetery Columbarium at a later time. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

Contributions may be made in Florence's memory to Blue Water Area Humane Society.

We have lost our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to cancer and illness. She will be in our hearts and memory forever.

Norman Schattler

Norman A. "Bud" Schattler, 60, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 in the Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit.

He was born September 12, 1945 in Port Huron. He married Sandra K. Schmidt on July 5, 1968 in Port Huron.

He was a graduate of Port Huron High School. Bud was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the U.S. Army.

He retired from MDOT after 30 years of employment. He owned Figaro's Lounge in Port Huron.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra K. Schattler of Port Huron; daughter, Martha J. Schattler of Port Huron; grandchildren, Aneisa and Amaiya, both of Port Huron; sister Verna J. Perry of St. Johns; many nieces and nephews and brothers and sistersinlaw.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey E. and Faye V. Schattler.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at KarrerSimpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Scott Stapleford will officiate. Burial will be in Caswell cemetery.

Visiting hours are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jon Jensen, Elmer Stanko, Jerry Adams, Ryan Schmidt, Todd Perry, Dave Martin, and Michael Bales.

Memorials may be made to the Karmanos Cancer Institute or the St. Clair County Humane Society.

Marie Ambroise

Marie VanConant Ambroise, 89 of Port Huron and formerly of Marysville, passed away Wednesday, June 6, 2007 in the Sweet Retreat AFC Home following a long illness.

She was born to Fred and Edith Cummings on August 25, 1917 near Croswell, married Eldwin C. 'Bob' VanConant on Nov. 2, 1936, and moved to Port Huron in 1943. He passed away Jan. 9, 1972. On Oct. 18, 1974, Marie married Edgar S. Ambroise, moved to Sarnia, and wintered in Kissimmee, FL for the next 20 years. Edgar died Jan. 6, 1994.

Marie was an avid bowler and was a 48 year member of the Port Huron Women's Bowling Assn. She enjoyed playing cards in various senior citizens groups, and was a former member of the Kissimmee Allstate 'KAST' Club.

She is survived by four children, Dale R. (Peg) VanConant of Sioux Falls, SD, Ann M. (William) DeBell of Port Huron, Terry L. (Cindy) VanConant of Watertown, SD, and Dennis J. (Cindy) VanConant of Kimball Twp.; two daughters-in-law, Wanda VanConant of Smiths Creek, and Barbara VanConant of Sarnia; 17 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; two sisters, Fayma Burns of Stanton, MI and Sue (Donald) Rankin of Croswell; a brother, Fred (Delores) Cummings of Carsonville; a sister-in-law, Marie Nalepa of Marysville; a brother-in-law, Francis Ambroise of Sarnia; and several nieces & nephews. Marie was expecting another great granddaughter in September. She is also preceded in death by two sons, Douglas and Robert VanConant.

Visitation will be in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be in the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 11, 2007 with visitation beginning one-half hour prior. The Rev. Vicky Smith of the Christian Refuge in Carsonville and a granddaughter of Marie, will officiate. Burial will follow in Elk Twp. cemetery, Peck.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jay, Kurt, Todd, Adam, Thomas & Trevor VanConant, and Bill DeBell II. Contributions may be made in Marie's memory to the St. Clair County Council on Aging or the charity of the donor's choice.

The family deeply appreciates the fine care their mother received from Ken and Cristi Dixon of Sweet Retreat AFC Home.

Jack Whitmore

Jack Whitmore, age 62, of Port Huron, Michigan. Died peacefully Sunday Morning, May 13, 2007 at Port Huron Hospital. Jack was born April 13, 1945 and was a resident of Port Huron his whole life. He was married to Carol Ann (Coulter)in Clearfield PA on July 23, 1966. He was preceded in death by his parents Artemus and Joy Whitmore and his brother Harry.

Jack was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in March 4, 1972. Despite failing health, nothing stopped 'Fast Jack' from serving his heavenly father. He was an elder and active minister until his death; sharing his strong convictions, that God's Kingdom will soon intervene in human affairs to restore life on earth to paradise-like conditions for all seekers of Bible truth.

He retired as a heavy equipment operator of the Operating Engineers, Local 324. Jack used those talents and volunteered his skills in building many Kingdom Hall projects, and was able to assist in hurricane relief efforts in Florida and Mississippi.

Jack is survived by his loving wife, Carol Ann; his devoted daughter Denise E. Spacil; his dear sons Darren H., Timothy D. and his precious wife Kelly; his grandchildren Justin and Jacquelyn Spacil, Jordan, Gabriel and Jade Whitmore; his brothers William Whitmore (Sharon), Donald Whitmore (Mo) and David Whitmore (Sue). Sisters; Sally Mans (Al) and Rebecca Hall (Gerald). Many nieces, nephews and spiritual brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be at the Smith Family Funeral Home - South, 1230 Seventh St. Port Huron, MI 48060 on Wednesday May 16, 2007 from 1-4 p.m. and from 6-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday May 17, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Smith Family Funeral Home - South Chapel, with Harvey Ezekiel presiding minister of Jehovah's Witnesses officiating.

Memorial Donations may be given to the South Port Huron Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses at 2761 Yeager St. Port Huron, MI 48060.

Larry Shirts

Larry L. Shirts, 59, of Port Huron Twp., passed away Saturday, May 12, 2007 in his residence following an illness of six weeks.

He was born to Vernon and Margaret Shirts on August 21, 1947 in Port Huron, graduated from Port Huron High School in 1965, and married Kathryn D. Elliott on May 27, 1978 in Port Huron.

Larry worked 16 years for St. Clair Rubber Co. and later worked 24 years for Crawford Door Co. He was a member of Port Huron Lodge #158 L.O.O.M., Port Huron Aerie #3702 F.O.E., and was a former member of the Port Huron Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed repairing small engines. He also participated in the Eagles Lodge and the Hillger's Bar canned food drive.

Larry is survived by his wife of nearly 29 years, Kathryn D. Shirts; one son, Gerald Vernon Shirts of Clinton Twp.; a brother, Ronald M. (Sharon M.) Shirts of Clyde Twp.; a nephew, Shannon (Karen) Shirts of Florida; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Jane Elliott of Kimball Twp.; three sisters-in-law, Mary (Bob) Ryan of Kimball Twp., Carrie Thompson of Port Huron Twp. and Wendy (Gary) McDaid of Port Huron; a brother-in-law, Richard (Pam) Elliott of California; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Adi Shirts.

Cremation arrangements were by Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Interment will be in Woodland cemetery at a later time.

Contributions may be made in Larry's memory to Blue Water Hospice.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their many offers of help, support and love during the past six weeks.

Marion Knisley

Marion M. Knisley, age 87 of Clyde, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007 in her home after a long illness. She was born May 10, 1920 in Port Huron and was a life long area resident. She married John A. Knisley Sr. on December 10, 1939 in Port Huron. He preceded her in death on November 20, 1981. She was a member of Kimball Calvary Church. Marion prayed for many people, and loved the Lord. She also loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She is survived by a son, Thomas (Patricia) Knisley of Ruby, 2 daughters, Virginia (Olaf) Middaugh of Livonia, and Linda (Larry) George of Kalkaska, 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, 3 sisters, Virginia Stead, Jo (Ab) Clement, and Beverly Middaugh, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, John Knisley Jr., 2 grandchildren, John Knisley III and Sally Schloss, 2 sisters, and a brother. A funeral service will take place at 11 AM Friday in the Kimball Calvary Church in Kimball Twp, with Pastor Leonard Meadows officiating. A graveside committal service will follow in Caswell cemetery. Pallbearers will be Timothy Knisley, Terry Middaugh, Roger and Larry George, Arthur Knisley, and Thomas Knisley Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Marion's great-grandsons. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7-9 PM and Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at the Smith Family Funeral Home - South, 1230 7th Street. Friends may also visit on Friday at church beginning at 10 AM. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice.

Kenneth Yost

Kenneth W. Yost M.D., 90 of Port Huron, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2007 in Marwood Nursing & Rehab. He was born to Leslie and Martha Yost on April 17, 1917 in Farr, WV, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and married Alma Buckner on August 14, 1948 in St. Clair.

He graduated from University of Michigan Medical School in 1954 and moved to Port Huron in 1956. Dr. Yost set up his pediatrics and obstetrics practice in Marysville and retired in May of 1998 after 42 years and over 7, 000 deliveries. He was a member of the Michigan State Medical Society and St. Clair County Medical Society, and was a former member of the staff at Mercy Hospital and Port Huron Hospital. His hobbies included electronics and golf. He was a former member of Port Huron Golf Club.

Dr. Yost is survived by his four sons, David S. Yost of Fort Gratiot, Mark F. (Bonnie) Yost M.D. of Erie, PA, Stephen E. (Susan) Yost of Cape Coral, FL, and Philip T. Yost of Port Huron; two grandsons, Jason Yost of Cape Coral and Michael Yost of Erie; a sister, Doris (Ralph) Carroll of Wheeling, WV; several nieces & nephews; and two special friends, Lou and Terry Badger of St. Clair. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma, who died December 22, 2003. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Carmen Yost.

Visitation will be on Sunday, June 24, 2007 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with visitation one hour prior to service time. The Rev. Max Amstutz, Port Huron Hospital Chaplin, will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Dr. Yost's memory to the charity of the donor's choice.

Tracy Kidd-Grandberry

Tracy La'Na Kidd-Grandberry, 34, of Warren, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2007. She was born April 26, 1973 to James and Stella Kidd. She was a culinary arts graduate with a passion for modeling and fashion. She was a devoted mother of two, and the owner of Tiers of Joy cake decorating service. She was employed at Sunrise Senior Living as a Dining Service Manager.

She leaves to mourn her sons Austin Hart (10) and Anthony Grandberry (4) of Warren, her mother and step-father Stella and Eddie Kindle Sr. of New Baltimore, a brother Anthony (Cassi) Kidd of California, a special step-brother Paul (Ebony) Kindle of New Haven, sisters Katy and Stephanie Kindle of New Baltimore, and a special step-sister Edith (Frank) Hewitt of Port Huron, a step-brother Eddie (Brandy) Kindle Jr., a step brother, Michael (Lisa) Kindle, and a step-sister Michelle Kindle all of Port Huron, an aunt Linda (Danny) Gunter, uncles Albert (Faith) Bankston, Perry (Pam) Bankston, Larry (Pam) Kidd, and Wesley Kidd all of Port Huron, a step-grandmother Sallie Bankston of Port Huron, a special great-aunt Grace (Edward) Williams of Port Huron, and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dushon Grandberry, father James Kidd Jr., her grandparents Albert (Snowdy) Bankston Sr., James (Jeanette) Kidd Sr., great-grandparents Leroy (Rosie) Lott, George (Alberta) Bankston, an uncle Rodney Bankston, and aunts Charlotte (Bill) Rogan, and Charlotte (Jim) Venema.

Family Hour will be on Sunday, June 3rd, 2007 at Smith Family Funeral Home - North Chapel at 1525 Hancock Street, from 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 4th, 2007 at New Covenant Life Ministries at 1302 Lapeer Avenue, Port Huron at 11 AM with Pastor Veter Nichols officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Grandberry Children's Trust Fund.

Larry Lane

Larry E. Lane aka 'Sandman' 61 of North Street, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2007 in his residence after a short illness. He was born to Valdis and the late George Lane on March 21, 1946 in Port Huron, attended Port Huron High School, and was a lifelong resident of the Port Huron area.

Larry was a professional truck driver and heavy equipment operator all his working life. He was a member of the Michigan Conference of Teamsters and the Blue Water Sports Fishing Association. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Larry is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mary Ann Lane; three daughters, Tonia (Daniel) Crawford of Ruby, Judy (Joe) Vorva of Sarasota, FL, and Christine Charbeneau of North Street; two sons, Steve J. Lane of Phoenix, AZ and Gregory (April) Charbeneau of North Street; 6 grandchildren, Todd, Travis, Raymond, Victoria, Dakota and Garrett; his mother, Valdis Lane; two sisters, Sallie (Harold) Baker and Bonnie (Mark) Scheffler; two brothers, Robert (Linda) Lane and Tom ( Barbara) Lane; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Pastor Douglas D. Studaker of Hillside Wesleyan Church will officiate. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Larry's memory to his family.

Russell Kaleikilo

Russell M. Kaleikilo, 59 of Port Huron, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2007 in Mercy Hospital. He was born July 16, 1947 in Honolulu, Hawaii and he came to Port Huron in 1978.

Russell was a cosmetologist in Port Huron for 20 years. He was active in local and state cosmetology associations and he enjoyed participating in local theater groups.

Russell is survived by six sisters, Cecilia Case of Ohio, Rosemary Hokoana, Grace Kaleikilo, Leandra Kaleikilo, & Pualani Harvest, all of Hawaii, and Elizabeth Kalua of Nevada; two brothers, Renwick Tassill of Hawaii and Herman Arcia of Texas; many nieces, nephews, & cousins, and a special, long-time friend, Richard Sherman of Port Huron.

Visitation will be in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. on Tuesday, June 26 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Robert Trask of Grace Episcopal Church will officiate.

Contributions may be made in Russell's memory to the American Cancer Society.

James Crimmins

James Patrick Crimmins, 79, former Postmaster of Port Huron, died Friday, May 11, 2007 in his home.

Jim was born July 8, 1927 in Port Huron, son of the Late John and Mattie (Marx) Crimmins and was a life long area resident.

He married Jacqueline A. Anderson on July 25, 1951. She preceded him in death on June 21, 1999.

Jim was a 1945 graduate of St. Stephen High School and served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 39 years retiring in 1982.

Jim volunteered at the American Red Cross. He served as an usher for many years at St. Joseph Church and was currently an active member of St. Mary 's Church. He enjoyed wood working and model ship building.

He is survived by his children, Terri (Joseph) Tomak of DeWitt, Anne Crimmins and David Grassi of Milford, Susan (John) Devon of Howell, Patrick (Caryn) Crimmins of Ypsilanti, Phyllis (Leo) Soulliere of Port Huron, John Crimmins of Port Huron, Paul (Patricia) Crimmins of Virginia Beach, VA and Eric Crimmins of Detroit; grandchildren, Kathleen (Luke) Sebby, Aaron Tomak, Nicholas, Scott and Stefani Soulliere, Christopher and Patrick Devon, Noah Crimmins, Sean and Rachel Crimmins, Christine (Jason) Silva and Michael and Casey Crimmins; brothers, Edward Crimmins of Davison, William (Dorothy) Crimmins of Port Huron, Thomas (Joan) Crimmins of Port Huron and his sister, Sr. Mary Elizabeth Crimmins, O.P. of Adrian.

Jim was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald and Jack; and sister-in-law Marge Crimmins.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Brian K. Cokonougher, pastor will officiate with military honors following under auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council.

Following Jim's wishes, cremation will take place.

Visiting hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday (5/14) in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and 9 a.m. Tuesday (5/15) at the church. A scripture service will be at 7 p.m. this evening.

Jim's grandsons will serve as his pallbearers.

Memorials in memory of Jim may be given to the St. Joseph Chorale.
