Suzanne Smith

Suzanne J. Smith, 62, died Sunday August 12, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital.

She was born September 17, 1944 in Port Huron.

Suzanne was a member of First Congregational Church, the Red Hat Society and the Quota Club. She also enjoyed dabbling in antiques.

She is survived by her daughter, Kelly (Tim) Raymo; son, Daniel Galbraith (Scott Racknor); grandson, Kenny (Jenny) Raymo; granddaughter, Kerrie Raymo; great-grandchildren, Rian, Cody, Randi, Dylan, and Lucas; and her beloved cats, Phatty and Buddy Smith.

Suzanne is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Lois Haar and her brother Jack "Gussy" Haar, Jr.

Cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will be in Hillside cemetery, St. Clair.

Julia Salog

Julia Patricia Salog of Livonia, formerly of Smith Creek, died Sunday, September 30, 2007 after an extended illness.

She was a graduate of Memphis High School. Julia was employed at Campbell Ewald Advertising in Detroit until her retirement. She was a member of St. Colette Parish, Livonia. She was a loving aunt and great aunt.

Julia is survived by her sisters, Frances Salog of Livonia, and Marie Saunders of Orlando, FL, her brother, John (Mildred) Szelog of Port Huron, and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Helen Toole and Josephine Aitken, and her brother, Frank Szelog.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday (10/3) in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Reverend Erwin Bauer, Senior Priest, will officiate. Inurnment will be in St. Philip Neri cemetery, Columbus, Michigan.

Visiting hours are Wednesday (10/3) from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Memorials in Julia's memory may be made to St. Philip Neri Church.

Frances Rousseau

Frances G. "Jerre" Rousseau, 86, of Port Huron but formerly of Grosse Pointe Woods and Harrisville, died Monday, July 23, 2007 after a short illness. She was born July 15, 1921 in Swanton, Ohio and has lived in Port Huron since 2002.

Jerre married Charles F. Rousseau November 28, 1942 in Swanton, OH.

She was a member of St. Mary Church and the Port Huron Museum. Jerre was devoted to her family. She enjoyed cooking, travel and art; she was a nature lover and was particularly interested in flowers, aquariums and zoos. She was a very creative person.

Jerre is survived by her husband, Charles of Port Huron; her daughter, Renee L. (Edmond) Carleton of Lexington; grandchildren, Anne O. (Kevin) Coughlin of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Sharon R. Rousseau, Daniel Rousseau and Rebecca Rousseau, all of Batavia, OH; great-grandchildren, Kathryn M. and Elizabeth G. Coughlin of Cuyahoga Falls; daughter-in-law, Karen R. Rousseau of Batavia; and her brother, Thomas (Sally) Pilliod of Ft. Myers, FL.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Charles Peter and Thomas Leo Rousseau; parents, Thomas and Leona Pilliod; sister, Emma Pruden; and brother, George Pilliod.

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon Saturday in St. Mary Church, Port Huron. The Rev. Simeon T. Iber, pastor will preside. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre cemetery, Southfield.

Visiting hours are 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2007 and 11:00 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2007 at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials in Jerre's memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity, St. Mary's Parish Capital Campaign or Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Frank Rodegeb

Frank I. Rodegeb, age 89 of Port Huron died Sunday, August 26, 2007 in Lapeer Regional Medical Center after a long illness. He was born April 12, 1918 in Hale, Michigan, and lived in Port Huron for the past 60 years. On November 19, 1943 he married Helen E. Beeler in New York City. She preceded him in death on October 10, 1995. Frank served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. One of his favorite stories involved his service on the LST 1027. He worked for Mueller Brass for 30 years. He enjoyed gardening, farming, hunting and fishing. He is survived by 2 daughters, Sharon (Robert) Soderberg of Lapeer, and Barbara (Pete) Dodds of Brighton, 3 sons, Frank (Linda) Rodegeb of Buffalo Valley, Tennessee, Robert (Lynn) Rodegeb of Temperance, Michigan, and David (Janice) Rodegeb of Waterford, 1 sister, Beatrice Dorland of Croswell, 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. The funeral service will take place at 10 AM Thursday in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North with The Rev. John Kaiser officiating. A graveside committal service will follow in Kinney cemetery under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans. Visitation will be Tuesday 6-8 and Wednesday 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Memorials may be made to the Michigan Parkinson's Foundation or the American Lung Association.

Walter Rivers

Walter J. Rivers, 87 of Fort Gratiot Twp., passed away Friday, July 06, 2007 in Evangelical Home Port Huron. He was born to Walter and Harriet Rivers on January 26, 1920 in Providence, RI and married Mary Alice Taylor on May 15, 1943 in Port Huron.

Walter served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He then was employed at Mueller Brass Co. for 22 years before retiring in 1984.

Walter attended the Hillside Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Alice Rivers, his twin daughters, Judith G. (Jack F.) Spring of Fenton, and Jacqueline G. (Charles R.) Harneck of Fort Gratiot; three grandchildren, Rev. Thad (Jerilynn) Spring of Marysville, Shawna (Clifford) Black of Fort Gratiot, and Heidi (Rev. Dennis) Cook of Port Huron; and seven great grandchildren, Levi & Jacob Spring, Mackenzie & Morgan Cook, and Cody, Shane, & Jason Black. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lillian Cole.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday in the funeral home preceded by one hour of visitation. His grandson, Rev. Thad Spring, Pastor of Community Wesleyan Church of Marysville, will officiate. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Columbarium at a later date.

Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. Lyle Reynolds, George Spring, Clarence Fair, Clifford Burgess, and Rev. Arthur Taylor. Contributions may be made in Walter's memory to the charity of the donor's choice.

Robert Rands

Pastor Robert J. Rands Jr., 55 of Port Huron, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 30, 2007. He was born to Robert and Alice Rands Sr. on July 25, 1952, attended the Port Huron Schools, and graduated from Port Huron High School in 1970.

Robert then graduated from Midwestern Baptist College and was ordained at Emanuel Baptist Church in Pontiac. On July 22, 1972, he married Cathy A. Harrell. He served in the gospel ministry for 35 years and was currently pastor of Smiths Creek Bible Church.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Cathy Rands; his three children, Amy Rands of Port Huron, Jason W. (Lisa) Rands of Port Huron, and Jeremy (Michelle) Rands of Milford, OH; six grandchildren, Richard, Jacob, Kayleigh, Paige, Mackenzie, and Autumn; three brothers, James A. (Kay) Rands, Raymond F. Rands, and Thomas R. (Gloria) Rands; three sisters, Rebecca M (Neal) Hendrigsman, Laura J. (Harold) Upleger, and Priscilla A. (Kent) Powell; a special aunt, Phyllis Jenkins; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, and a sister, Sharon Rands.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in Community Baptist Church, 1620 Wadhams Road, preceded by one hour of visitation at the church. Pastor James Jones will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Robert's memory to Bearing Precious Seed Ministry or Baptist Christian Academy.

Arthur Peterson

Arthur W. Peterson, 86, of Marysville, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 6, 2007. He was born to Henry and Elizabeth Peterson on October 23, 1920 in Port Huron, attended the Port Huron Schools, and graduated from Port Huron High School in January of 1939.

Art served in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army Photo Division during World War II. On August 9, 1947, he married Emily E. Schewe. He worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1981. He was a long-time member of Grace Episcopal Church.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emily E. Peterson; three children, Wendy Jones of National City, CA, Susan (Randall) Wefel of Glendale, AZ, and Robert (Tracy) Peterson of Albuquerque, NM; a grandson, Brent (Brandi) Wefel; and two great-grandchildren, Tori and Dahlton. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Janet Jones, and a sister, Gladys Marigold.

A service in Art's memory will take place at 11:00 Wednesday, October 10, 2007 in Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. Robert Trask will officiate. Visitation will be in the church parlor one hour prior to the service.

Contributions may be made in Art's memory to Grace Episcopal Church or the charity of the donor's choice. Cremation arrangements were by Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St.

Keith Peterson

Keith J. Peterson, 54, of Port Huron, died Saturday, September 8, 2007 in his home after a five month illness.

He was born August 12, 1953 in Detroit and has lived in Port Huron since 1979.

Keith married the former Darlene M. Dowling August 1, 1987 in Port Huron.

He was a graduate of Warren Woods High School. Together with his wife, Darlene he owned and operated the Day Break Café and Cheap Charlie's. Keith was an avid sports fan and sponsor of many local youth sports programs. He was a great Tiger fan and also rooted for the Lions. Keith loved his classic cars and "Cruise Night". He was also an avid NASCAR fan and loved water sports, especially boating. He was a strong supporter of scouting, particularly Boy Scout Troop # 168. He enjoyed family ski trips and was a health enthusiast. He loved his hours spent at the Birchwood Athletic Club. He was a member of St. Mary Parish. He was instrumental in beginning the Ft. Gratiot Business Association and was president of it. The most important thing in Keith's life was his family: Darlene and their sons.

In January of 1995 Keith made a life changing decision as he quit drinking and joined A.A. He was a casual and personable man with whom anyone could feel at ease and comfortable, and he inspired several other people to make the same positive choices in life that he had made.

Keith is survived by his wife, Darlene; his sons, Derek J. a student at U. of M., Brendan K. a student at M. S. U., Spencer "George" and Rylee D. Peterson, both of Port Huron; mother, Mildred C. Korbas of Ft. Gratiot; brothers, Charles (Nancy) Peterson of Cadillac, MI and Steven Peterson of Croswell; sisters, Laura Dean-Bonnell of Big Rapids, MI and Gail (Tom) Kotsko of Eureka, MO; sister-in-law, Daryl (Sandy) Peters of Sterling Heights; father-in-law, Francis Dowling of Ft. Gratiot; sisters-in-law, Christine Vernon of Saginaw and Sharal Burton of Brown City, Linda Dowling of Saginaw and brother-in-law, Francis Dowling of North Branch; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and dear friends, Mike Whaling of Port Huron and James Vaness of suburban Ruby.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Peterson, his brother Kenneth Peterson and his step-father, Ernie Korbas.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary Church. The Rev. Simeon T. Iber, Pastor, will preside. Pallbearers will be Derek and Brendan Peterson, Duke Dunn, Kevin Loviska, Rob LeGrow and John Anter.

Visiting for Keith is Tuesday from 2 to 8:00 p.m.at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and on Wednesday (9/12) beginning at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church.

Memorials in Keith's memory may be directed to Troop #168, Blue Water Council, B.S.A. or the Mid City Nutrition Program.

Margaret Pavey

Margaret E. Pavey, 68 of Port Huron Twp. passed away Friday, July 6, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital following a short illness. She was born to Quentin and Mary Ryckman on February 26, 1939 in Forester, MI.

In her early years, Margaret worked as an airline attendant for American Airlines. She then lived in San Mateo, CA briefly while working for Morton Salt Co. Upon returning to the Port Huron area, she met and married Richard L. 'Dick' Pavey on August 6, 1976. She enjoyed working outside in her yard.

She is survived by an uncle, Edward (Marianne) Gehring of Harbor Beach; two aunts, Grace E. Gehring of Bad Axe and Maggie Gehring of Bridgeport; and several cousins including a special cousin, John Gehring of Bad Axe.

She was preceded in death by her father, Quentin (June 11, 2004) her husband, Dick (May 22, 2006), and her mother, Mary, (Jan. 2, 2007).

A memorial service in Margaret's memory will take place at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Interment will be in Mt. Hope cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Margaret's memory to American Diabetes Association.

Harold Parker

Harold William Parker, 71, died Saturday, October 6, 2007 in Evangelical Home.

He was born September 23, 1936 in Port Huron to the late Roy William and Thelma Janette (Todd) Parker.

He owned homes in Port Huron and Buel Township, Croswell and lived in Port Huron all his life. He attended Port Huron Schools and graduated from Port Huron Junior College with an Associate's Degree in Pharmacy. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for 2 years and 8 months. He was assistant manager for Jack Smith Union Farmers until going into the Army. He worked at Mueller Brass Company for 42 years. He belonged to the Mueller Brass Quarter Century Club and was an avid florist and gardener. He was a member of Gratiot Park United Methodist Church all his life and was a very giving person.

Harold is survived by his brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Donald L. (Linda) Parker of North Street and Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. (Parker) of Port Huron; nephew, Thomas A. Parker of North Street; nieces, Susan (Alex) Popple of Farnham, Surrey, England, Rebecca Parker of Ferndale and Kristin (Timothy) Hornby of Port Huron; two great-nephews, Brodey and Brennen Hornby; and close friend, Gary McGinnis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy W. and Thelma J. Parker.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. The Rev. Donald Sperling will officiate. Burial will be in Croswell cemetery.

Visitation is 2-9 p.m. today in the funeral home and 10 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Military graveside services will be held under the auspices of Post #2382 V.F.W., Lexington.

Memorials may be given to Gratiot Park United Methodist Church.

Evangeline Papineau

Evangeline P. Papineau, 84, of Ruby, died unexpectedly, Sunday, July 8, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital Emergency Room.

She was born May 8, 1923 in Port Huron and was a life long resident of the area. Evangeline married James F. "Pappy" Papineau, Sr., November 10, 1943 and he preceded her in death November 18, 1985.

Evangeline was a 1942 graduate of Port Huron High School, life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the St. Clair County Council on Aging. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was an avid Detroit Tiger fan. She also enjoyed dancing and traveling. She was a nanny to many others. She enjoyed nature and hunting.

Surviving are her sons, James F. (Joan), Jr. of Kimball, Robert H. (Teri) and Douglas L. (Cathy), both of Ft. Gratiot; daughter, Rosanne M. (Stanley) Tarala; son, Richard A. (Kim) Papineau of Ft. Gratiot; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; her sister, Theresa Eveningred of Port Huron; and her long time companion, Zygmund "Zig" Porada of Ruby.

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with Evangelist Harold L. Hastings officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m.. until service time. Memorials, in Evangeline's memory, may be made to St. Clair County Council on Aging.

Carol Nowakowski

Dr. Carol Veronica Nowakowski, died August 14, 2007. She was admired for her strong sense of family and her love of life. She was born July 8, 1958.

Carol believed in education. She graduated with honors from Memphis High School in 1976. She continued her education at St. Clair County Community College. She then completed her B.S. and M.B.A. degrees from Michigan State University. She fulfilled her goal of a Doctoral Degree from Western Michigan University while battling breast cancer. At the winter commencement exercise she was singled out for her extraordinary perseverance and strength during the college commencement ceremony.

Carol used her talents as an educational leader at Davenport University in Kalamazoo and currently as the Vice-President of Student Services at St. Clair County Community College. She was loved and respected by both her colleagues and students.

She is survived by her loving husband, Robert "Bob" Cook; she adored her daughter, Carmen Wanda Frances Wiegand and was a number one supporter of the New Life Christian Academy Knights. Also surviving are stepdaughters, Holly, Amber and Tina. Carol will be sadly missed by her parents, Aloysius and Frances Nowakowski of Emmett and her siblings, Catherine (Jeff) Woloshen, Diane (Chuck) Wood, Mary (Jeff) Pickering, Susan (Laurent) Bachelot, John (Martha) Nowakowski and Margaret (Allen) Muir. Carol was extremely proud and mentored her many nieces and nephews and grandchildren.

Preceding Carol in death were her in-laws, Mr. Robert and Mrs. Mary Jean Cook and her three brothers, James, Joseph and Michael Nowakowski.

Visitation with family will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church. The Rev. Simeon T. Iber will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to a scholarship fund to be determined by Carol's family.
