Geraldine Miskell

Geraldine M. "Geri" Miskell, 70, of Port Huron Twp. went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 16, 2007 in Mercy Hospital. She was born to Gerald and Ethel Paterson on June 3, 1937, graduated from Marysville High School, and married William E. Miskell on October 12, 1957 in the Court Street Baptist Church, Port Huron.

Geri worked with her brother and sister-in-law at the House of Crafts for 20 years. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross where she was "Rainbow the Clown." She was a long-time member and former Sunday School teacher of the First Baptist Church of Marysville. She bowled for many years, enjoyed crafts and traveling, and was a member of the Good Sam's Club Rovers, Local 44.

Geraldine is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, William E. Miskell; her two sons, William G. (Elizabeth) Miskell of Cambridge, MD and Daniel G. (Bonnie) Miskell of Port Huron Twp.; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; her sister, Ellen (John) Foglesong of Smiths Creek; her brother, Don (Pat) Paterson of Smiths Creek; and several nieces & nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the First Baptist Church of Marysville with visitation in the church one hour prior to the service. Pastor Dallas Berry will officiate. Burial will follow in Caswell cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Geri's memory to First Baptist Church of Marysville or American Red Cross.

Donna Meyers

Donna R. Meyers, age 80 of Fort Gratiot died Thursday, September 6, 2007 in Port Huron Hospital after a long illness.

She was born January 5, 1927 in Fargo, Michigan and was a life long area resident. She married Earl V. Meyers on July 20, 1957 in Port Huron. He preceded her in death on October 14, 2002.

Donna enjoyed playing golf. She was a charter member of Willow Ridge Golf Club, and also enjoyed golfing at the Elks with her husband. Donna also spent many winters in Florida.

She is survived by her son, Dale (Toni) George of Port Huron; daughter, Cathy (Charles) Riffenburg III of Fort Gratiot; son, Douglas (Ruthann) George of Georgia; several grandchildren; and other family members; a brother, Marvin (Anna Jean) Weston of Fort Gratiot; many nieces; nephews; 2 sisters-in-law, Virginia Weston and Paula Prong; and several friends, including 2 close friends, Katie Toles and Loraine Murray. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Richard J. Weston, and Burnell T. Weston.

A visitation with the family will be held on Sunday (9/9) from 1-5 p.m. in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street. Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Michael Mehler

Michael A. Mehler, age 59 of Port Huron Twp., died Saturday, June 30, 2007 after a long illness. He was born December 16, 1947 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, and lived in the Port Huron area for most of his life. He married Linda Guilliat on June 14, 1985 in Port Huron. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, and was a member of the American Legion Post in Marysville. He enjoyed boating, and was a member of the Black River Boat Club.

He is survived by his wife, Linda of Port Huron Twp.; 3 sons, Terry (Connie Lump) Mehler of Port Huron Twp., Richard Sweet of Coldwater, and John (Donna) Inman of Fairview, MI; his father, Frank (Helene) Mehler of Port Richey, Florida; 6 grandchildren, Darrien Michael Mehler, Sierra Cheyenne Mehler, Ashley Kaylena Lump, Amanda Kaye Stephens, and Richard Louis Sweet, all of Port Huron Twp., and Robbie Lea-Thomas Inman of Fairview, MI; 3 brothers, Franklin (Lynne) Mehler and Dennis (Jane Harris) Mehler, both of Port Huron, Fred (Mary) Croft of Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Mehler.

Cremation has taken place. A family memorial service will be held at a later time. Smith Family Funeral Home - North was in charge of arrangements.

Bill McDannel

William Hunt 'Bill' McDannel, age 80, of Savage, MD passed away August 31, 2007. Dear father of William (Katherine) McDannel of Darien, IL, Rea-Ann (Bruce) Nelson of Naperville, IL, John (Ramona) McDannel, Beecher, IL, and James (Becky) McDannel of Beecher, IL; Loving grandfather of Graham, Meredith, Connor, Heather, John, James, Michael, Jessica, Matthew, and James.

Visitation is Tuesday September 4th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Port Huron, MI. 48060, Phone 810 985 4351. The funeral service is 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 5th.in the funeral home followed by interment in Lakeside cemetery, Port Huron.

Born in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan, Bill grew up in Port Huron MI. and was an Eagle Scout. A graduate of Michigan State University, Bill worked for Hilton Hotels in Chicago and later concluded his career with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as a convention administrator in Washington DC. Bill also served his country in WW II as an artillery instructor stateside. As a father he provided a loving home with involvement as a Youth Coach in Baseball and a Supporter of Track and Field, Music, and various activities with his family. A consummate Tinkerer and Craftsman, he created many things from nothing in remodeling our homes, in automotive projects, and antique collecting and refinishing, while sharing and teaching others. Bill was involved in coaching, thoroughbred racing with friends, and was an avid golfer in retirement.

LaVern Marx

LaVern E. Marx, 90, of Port Huron died July 9, 2007 following an extended illness.

He was born March 21, 1917 in Port Huron and has lived here all his life. LaVern married Helen Henn on July 20, 1942 in Brown City.

He was a 1936 graduate of St. Stephen High School. LaVern served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Sergeant in the Signal Corp. in England, France, and Germany. He worked as a supervisor at Chrysler Corporation, Ainsworth, and Prestolite before retiring from Marx Agency which he owned and operated.

LaVern is survived by his wife, Helen of Port Huron; sons, Gary (Mary Anne) of Highland, MI, Richard (Pamela) of Fort Wayne, IN, and Dennis (Deborah) of Port Huron; grandchildren, Shannon and Steven Marx of Highland, Christine (Kevin) Espeset of Minneapolis, MN, Deanna Marx of Chicago, Brian and John Marx of Fort Wayne, IN, and Heather (Richard) Whitford of Grofton, MD; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Lena (Judge) Marx and his brother David Marx.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Brian K. Cokonougher, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope cemetery with military honors under auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Visitations will be 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church. A rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be given to Blue Water Hospice.

Russell Maes

Russell J. Maes, 90, a lifelong resident of Port Huron Township, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 11, 2007. He was born on May 7, 1917 in Melvin, and was the son of Mary Setter Maes and grandson of Jake Setter.

Russell married Marguerite E. Fenner on June 9, 1939. They were married 67 years. Marguerite passed away March 13, 2007.

Russell began his working career as a carpenter and built several homes in the area. He and Marguerite owned and operated several businesses including Allendale Supermarket, Allendale Shell Station, Ricky's Drive-In Restaurant, and the area's first golf driving range on 24th Avenue. At the end of his career, Russell worked 10 years on the Blue Water Bridge.

He attended Griswold Street Baptist Church, and was an avid fisherman and pheasant hunter. For 40 years, Russell and Marguerite spent six months of every year living in Florida where they made numerous, loving friends.

He is survived by his son, Roger and Sandra Maes, three granddaughters, Annette and Kirk Churchill, Christina and Rich Graham, and Marlo and Tony Gates, five great grandchildren, Jacquline, Kirk, Richard, Jeffrey, and Gregory, and was also survived by several nieces & nephews, and many special, life-long friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Clarence Maes, and his sisters, Billie Navarre and Frances Dortman.

Visitation will be on Thursday, September 13, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be Friday in the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Dan Stewart of Griswold Street Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery.

Russell's grandchildren will be his pallbearers. Contributions may be made in his memory to Francophone Ministries, Blue Water Hospice, or Griswold Street Baptist Church.

Christine Lyons

Christine Elyse Lyons, age 57, of Owosso, formerly of Port Huron, Michigan died Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at her home.

Memorial services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes, Jennings-Lyons Chapel, Owosso, MI on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Billy Cole will officiate Visitation will be held on Friday, October 5, 2007 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, October 6, 2007 from 12:00 until time of the service at 1:00 p.m.

Christine was born in Port Huron, Michigan on October 12, 1949 the daughter of John and Elyse (Dortman) Swaffield. She resided most of her life in Melvindale before moving to Owosso in 2002 and graduated from Port Huron High School with the class of 1967. Christine married Raymond M. Lyons on June 20, 1997 in Taylor, Michigan. She worked for Hayes Lemmerz in Northville, Michigan until 2000 when they moved. Christine enjoyed the outdoors, nature and being up North.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond Lyons of Owosso, MI; daughter, Tiffaney Kolar of St. Clair Shores, MI; son, Sebastian Atwater of Allen Park, MI, 3 stepchildren; 1 granddaughter, Delaney Kolar of St. Clair Shores, MI; 5 stepgrandchildren; 1 sister, Julie Kelley-Wilczynski and Gary Wilczynski of Port Huron, MI; 1 brother, John Swaffield of Port Huron, MI; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, 1 son Sean, and 1 sister Linda Sharpe.

Memorials may be made to Memorial Healthcare Hospice. The family is being served by Smith Family Funeral Homes, Jennings-Lyons Chapel, Owosso, MI.

Millie Lutze

Millie J. Lutze, age 81, of Port Huron, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 in the Evangelical Home after a long illness. She was born March 22, 1926 in Flint and had lived in Port Huron since 1966.

She was married to The Rev. Harold Lutze. He preceded her in death on June 17, 1980.

Millie was very creative. She was a gifted artist and a published poet. For many years she worked as a floral designer. Millie enjoyed nature, music, and had a great love for her family.

She is survived by her son, Phillip L. Lutze of Kimball, 3 daughters, Jeanne (Wayne) Howison of North Street, Marsha Card of Port Huron, and Colleen Nicefield of Port Huron; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a sister, Delores DeMoss; and 2 brothers, Tom (Gwen) Smith, and Billy (Jean) Cuvorubias. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Howison, and a daughter-in-law, Sue Lutze.

The funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Friday (9/28) in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street with The Rev. Dellis Hudson officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside cemetery. Friends may visit Thursday (9/27) from 6-8 p.m. and on Friday (9/28) one hour before the funeral service. Memorials may be made to Blue Water Hospice.

Kirk LePine

Kirk Donald LePine, age 47, of Port Huron, passed away quietly in his sleep on September 26, 2007.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jon, a son Jon, and his beloved parents, Gail and Donald LePine. He is survived by his two sisters, Ms. Suzanne Schroeder of Port Huron, and Mrs. Diana (Gerald) Fackler of Metamora; a nephew, Mick (Elizabeth Zmud) Schroeder of Port Huron; a small step-family; and a beloved extended family, Nick (Tiffany), Brian, John, Keith, Joe, Pat, and Lee.

A funeral service will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday (9/29) in the Smith Family Funeral Home - North, 1525 Hancock Street. There will be visitation on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

John Lane

John H. Lane, 90, of North Street, died peacefully during his sleep on Thursday, July 12, 2007 in Port Huron. John was born in North Street on March 31, 1917 to the late William and Emma Lane.

John loved his family's farm and dedicated his life to preserving the property. With a kind and gentle spirit, he was a quiet man who enjoyed the simpler pleasures in life. John was a lifetime member of the Central Methodist Church in North Street, and always found fulfillment in reading the Bible. In recent years, John would entertain us with amusing stories from the past and the frequent recitation of his favorite verses. He constantly brought smiles to our faces. His presence will be greatly missed.

John is survived by several cousins including his cousin, A. Alvin Lane of Fort Gratiot.

Arrangements are by Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. Services will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will be in Lakeside cemetery. Contributions may be made in John's memory to the charity of the donor's choice.

Eileen LaMotte

Eileen Marie LaMotte, 86 of North Street, died unexpectedly in William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, on Sunday, September 16, 2007.

The oldest of four children, Eileen was born to William and Lora Ultsch on August 10, 1921 in Port Huron. She graduated from Port Huron High School in 1940 and lived most of her life in the Port Huron area. On Dec. 9, 1947 she married Leonard A. LaMotte. He died December 19, 1987.

Eileen lived for her family and her extended family. She drove school bus for the PHASD and, for many years, one of her biggest joys was traveling in her motor home, packing in as many family members as possible. She bowled in many mixed and women's leagues. The highlight of the bowling year was attending the national tournament with her team and having a great time. Whether it was baseball, hockey, football, or soccer, sports was a big part of her life when one of her children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren was participating. 'E' as she was called housed Silver Stick hockey players for many years, and would continue to receive Christmas cards from the boys.

Eileen is survived by her daughters, Margaret (Walt) Holmes, Lynda Johnson, Cheryl (Don) Wahl, Lora (Doug) Howe, Irene (Mike) Grosser, & Cathy (William) Mumford; her sons, James (Loreen) Howe, Lawrence Howe Jr., & Wayne (Theresa) Stickney; a son-in-law, Gene Warshefski; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; her sister, Charlotte Barber; and several nieces & nephews. She was also preceded in death by a son, William Howe, a daughter, Nancy Warshefski, three grandchildren, Margo Lynn Marsack, Joey Marsack, & Vincent Howe, and siblings, James Ultsch and Mary Loretta 'Sis' Fowler.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Griswold Street Baptist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Terry Kuhns will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Eileen's grandsons will be her pallbearers. Contributions may be made in her memory to Griswold Street Baptist Church or the charity of the donor's choice.

Howard Kuhn

Howard D. Kuhn, lifelong resident of Fort Gratiot Township, passed away on August 29, 2007 after a long and courageous battle with multiple health problems.

Born on April 28, 1922 to Howard and Ada Kuhn, Mr. Kuhn was preceded in death by his brother Rowland and sisters Ella Mae and Alma.

He is survived by Eleanor, his beloved wife of 65 years; children, Karen (Dennis) Marone, Port Huron, Kenneth (Pauline) Kuhn, Houghton Lake, Julie (Jim) Warrender of Bradenton, FL and Thomas (Chris) Kuhn, Westland; grandchildren, Dr. Scott Ferguson, Mark Ferguson, Joel Ferguson, Natalie Geffros, Bradley Rowell, Matthew Rowell, Rebecca Sherman, Katina McKibbon, and Kevin Kuhn; as well as 21 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kuhn served in WWII during the Battle of the Bulge, deemed to be the turning point of the war. He received the Purple Heart as well as the Bronze Star of Meritorious Service. He was a very humble man and never spoke of his war experiences in spite of the fact that he was credited with saving many men of his Platoon serving on the front line. A fiercely loyal American citizen, he proudly displayed his American Flag daily in spite of his infirmities.

After the war, Mr. Kuhn was employed by the State of Michigan and spent his career working on the Blue Water Bridge, a place which his grandchildren fondly called "Grampa's Bridge".

In 1962, along with his brother, Rowland Kuhn, the Kuhn Brothers Kartway was opened on 24th Ave. in Fort Gratiot Township. For the next 15 years, the Kartway expanded to be Kuhn Brothers Funland and included not only the Go-Karts, but a large Kiddie Land, Miniature Golf Course, picnic area, Batting cages and more. One of his greatest pleasures was the day each year devoted to the children of Woodlands Developmental Center coming for a special outing.

In 1976, Mr. Kuhn began spending his winters in Bradenton, FL, a place he loved for its sunshine and warm temperatures. A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, he rode motorcycles and or a beautiful motor scooter with his wife, Eleanor in a side car until his early '80s. Also an avid baseball fan, Mr. Kuhn played softball in Florida until into his '70s. He was a lifelong Tiger fan.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 1st at Hillside Wesleyan Church with Pastor Doug Studaker officiating. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the service time Saturday.

Memorials may be made to Special Olympics.

Elizabeth Kuhn

Elizabeth A. "Betty" Kuhn, 79, of Port Huron, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 in Mercy Hospital. She was born to William and Josephine Bentling on March 8, 1928 in Detroit, and married Pastor Richard Kuhn on May 30, 1947.

Betty assisted Pastor Kuhn in his ministry in the three communities he pastored. She was a long-time member of Sparlingville Baptist Church.

Family was very important to Betty. She always enjoyed her time spent with them. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara A. Wright of Port Huron; two grandchildren, Jon (Leah) Wright of Marysville and Lynette Compton of Port Huron; two great-grandsons, Eric Compton and Zachary Wright; one sister; one brother; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband (January 15, 2000) and a granddaughter, Beth Ann Wright (1971).

Visitation will be on Thursday, August 23, 2007 in Smith Family Funeral Home-South, 1230 Seventh St. from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Tom Brennan will officiate. Burial will follow in Caswell cemetery.

Contributions may be made in Betty's memory to Sparlingville Baptist Church or Blue Water Hospice.

Jule Kovar

Jule Marie Kovar, 14 of Fort Gratiot, much loved daughter of Dr. Richard and Anna Kovar and beloved sister of Russell Kovar, died Wednesday, August 8, 2007 in a tragic drowning accident in Grand Bend, Ontario.

Jule is also survived by her grandparents, Phyllis Jacobellis, Edward & Dorothy Kovar, and many aunts and uncles.

Jule was entering Port Huron Northern High School as a freshman and looked forward to so many things, especially being on the volleyball and tennis teams. She loved playing tennis with her friends at the Sanborn tennis house which was like a second home to her. Jule was an accomplished USTA junior tennis player. She also loved playing volleyball with her friends on the Ft. Gratiot Middle School Team. Jule was artistically creative and wanted to be a fashion designer.

Jule will be missed for her charismatic smile, spirit, wonderful sense of humor and talent for making people laugh. She had a passion for life and had a knack for making people feel appreciated.

Visitation will be in Smith Family Funeral Home-North, 1525 Hancock St. on Saturday, August 11, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday in Cornerstone Church, Clyde Twp. with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Pastors Peter Foxwell and Craig Coon will officiate.

Any contributions may be made in Jule's memory to The Jule Kovar Parent-Child Memorial Tennis Tournament to benefit Port Huron area Junior Tennis, or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Our hearts are broken. Jule, you are sorely missed.
