September 13, 1934 - April 11, 2002

Doris J. Higbee, age 67, of Remus died on Thursday, April 11, 2002, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Funeral Services for Doris will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, April 15, at Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant. The Rev. Wayne Boughan will officiate, with interment in the Kelly cemetery in Midland Co., Michigan.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Sunday, April 14, from 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Wesleyan Church or to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Doris was born September 13, 1934, in Lee Twp., Midland Co., Michigan, the daughter of Henry A. Dunbar and Luella M. (Gates) Dunbar. Doris married Gerald Higbee on June 5, 1962, in Shepherd, Michigan. Doris worked as a senior companion for the Commission on Aging.
Prior work experience included working as a nurse’s aide for the Total Living Center. Doris was a member of the Trinity Wesleyan Church. She loved fishing, gardening, and her rabbit.

Doris is survived by her children, Diane Wiggins of Mt. Pleasant, Dawn Horton (Peter) of Burton, James Kelsey (Sylvia) of Shepherd, Mary Smith (Byron) of Mt. Pleasant, Geraldine Whitman (Charles) of Mt. Pleasant, William Higbee of Burton, Edward Higbee (Dawn) of Lake, and Aaron Higbee of Remus, and Alvin Higbee (Cindy) of Mt. Pleasant; her 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; and 1 brother Fred Dunbar (Delores) of Midland.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Gerald Higbee and sister Mary Doty.

Spence, Claire
October 14, 1924 - April 10, 2002

W. Claire Spence, 77, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Tendercare in Mt. Pleasant.

A Funeral Mass for Claire will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Sacred Heart Church in Mt. Pleasant with Fr. Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Friday, April 12, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m., with a vigil service at 7 p.m., and at Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Tendercare Patient Care Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Claire was born on October 14, 1924, in Belding, Michigan, the daughter of William and Sadie Mae (Swett) Darling. She graduated Valedictorian from Shepherd High School in 1942. Claire married Robert Spence on February 16, 1946, at St. Boniface in Detroit. She worked as a freelance writer and columnist for the Daily Times News. Claire had also articles published in the Detroit News and other publishings. She had served on the Isabella County Planning Commission. She enjoyed painting, photography, and reading. Claire was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Catholic Daughters.

Claire is survived by her husband Robert P. Spence; her children, Robert C. Spence (Sharon) of Mt. Pleasant, John D. Spence of Mt. Pleasant, William J. Spence (Kathy) of Littleton, CO, Andrew J. Spence (Cindy) of Mt. Pleasant, Martin T. Spence (fiancee’ Mary Riehl) of Mt. Pleasant, and Nicholas A. Spence (Ann Verzeletti) of Azle, TX; 12 grandchildren, Heidi Minthorn (James), Chad Spence, Patric Spence, Bryan Spence, Carrie Mathews (Brett), Heather Spence, Brandon Spence, Michael Spence, Magan Spence, Sarah Spence, Daniel Spence, and Ryan Spence; 3 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Ned Lambertson of Belding; and sister Leora Pickard of Chelsea.

Claire was preceded in death by sisters Erma Raymond, Marvel “Todd” Brady, Iva Darling, and Thelma “Red” Lambertson.

Devine, Sr., John J.
February 6, 1913 - April 8, 2002

John J. Devine, Sr., of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2002, at his home.

A Funeral Mass for John will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Sacred Heart Church in Mt. Pleasant with Fr. Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, April 10, from 7-9 p.m., with a vigil service at 8:30 p.m., and at Sacred Heart Church on Thursday, April 11, from 10 a.m. until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan or donor’s choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

John was born on February 6, 1913, in Tulsa, OK, the son of Joseph and Clara (Rampanelli) Devine. He married Phyllis Klatt on January 2, 1940, in Alma. John was employed in the oil and gas industry by Leonard Refinery in Alma and Leonard Pipeline in Mt. Pleasant, before starting Osceola Pipeline Company in 1956. He remained an independent in the industry until his retirement. John was a long-time member of the Michigan Oil and Gas Association and Sacred Heart Church.

John was also a member of Walloon Lake Country Club and Rancho Las Palmas Country Club. He dearly loved Walloon Lake where he summered for 54 years and Indian Wells, California, where he wintered the past 22 years.

John is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his children, John J. Devine, Jr., of Mt. Pleasant, and David William Devine (Melinda) of Alma; his 2 grandchildren, Ty and Danielle Devine; 1 brother, Joseph Devine of Mt. Pleasant; and his sister-in-law, Winifred Lentner.

John was preceded in death by his daughter, Danna Catherine Devine, his parents, and his brother, Robert Devine.

VanHorn, Rosaline Marie
February 1, 1931 - April 7, 2002

Rosaline Marie VanHorn, 71, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2002, in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral Services for Rosaline will be held at 3 p.m., on Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Clark Funeral Chapel with Pastor Michael Biedenbender of the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, April 9, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Rosaline was born on February 1, 1931, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Phillip and Lillian (Schupbach) Kullman. She married Frederick Leonard VanHorn on February 12, 1949. Rosaline was a homemaker. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Women of the Moose #338. Rosaline enjoyed bowling and bingo.

Rosaline is survived by her children Frederick VanHorn of Houston, TX, Pamela Robinson of Mt. Pleasant, Raymond “Babe” VanHorn (Patty) of Mt. Pleasant, Rebecca VanHorn of Mt. Pleasant, Cindy Wright (Gary) of Midland, and Louann Rolston (Rick) of Mt. Pleasant; 11 grandchildren, Amanda, Richard, Rosie, Amy, Andrea, Shelley, Sherrie, Samantha, Jackie, Cory, and Lisa; her brothers Phil Kullman of Onekema, Raymond “Pee Wee” Kullman (Sue) of Shepherd, and Robert Kullman (Sandy) of Mt. Pleasant; 4 sisters Helen Torpey (Hilton) of Mt. Pleasant, Mary Davison (Gale) of Alma, Barb Struble (Lynn) of Zeeland, Betty Snider (Larry) of Millbrook, and sisters-in-law Nancy Kullman of Harrison, Ida Downing of Weidman, and Jane VanHorn of Mt. Pleasant.

Rosaline was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter Diane VanHorn; her grandson Shaun Robinson; both parents; and her brothers Leroy Kullman and Alvin Kullman.

Trainor, Marjorie L.
January 4, 1923 - April 7, 2002

Marjorie L. Trainor, age 79, of Rosebush, passed away at the Gratiot Community Hospital on Sunday, April 7, 2002.

A Funeral Mass for Marjorie will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday , April 10, at St. Henry’s Catholic Church with Fr. Ron Wagner and Sister Mary Ellen McDonald co- officiating. Interment will follow in St. Henry’s cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, April 9, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. and on Wednesday, April 10, from 10 a.m. until time of service at St. Henry’s Church There will be a vigil service on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions in memory of Marjorie may be made to St. Henry’s Church or to Hospice of Central Michigan. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Marjorie was born January 4, 1923, in Coleman, Michigan, the daughter of William Nobbs and Edith (Tessman) Nobbs. Marjorie graduated from Coleman High School in 1941.
She married Frank Trainor January 4, 1952, at St. Henry’s in Rosebush. Marjorie was a member of St. Henry’s Church and was also a member of the Altar Society. Marjorie is survived by her husband Frank of Rosebush; her children, William Trainor (Jeanne) of Rosebush, Mary Page (Ronald) of Boyne City, Susan Weber (Jeffrey) of Beal City, James Trainor (Barbara) of Beal City; and her special angels, Alice, Tom, and Helen Trainor, all of Rosebush; and her 12 grandchildren.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Leita Rockett.

Funnell, Wanda June
July 5, 1928 - April 5, 2002

Wanda June Funnell, 73, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on April 5, 2002, at Gratiot Community Hospital.

Funeral Services for Wanda will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 8, at Clark Funeral Chapel with Rev. Brian LaMew of the Rosebush United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Saturday, April 6, from 7-9 p.m. and on Sunday, April 7, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Wanda was born on July 5, 1928, in Rosebush, the daughter of Oliver and Lena (Bellinger) House. She married Wellington Funnell on June 25, 1946, in Clare. Wanda was a homemaker. She was a member of the Rosebush United Methodist Church.

Wanda is survived her husband Wellington Funnell; her children Diane Morse (Don) of Mt. Pleasant, Vicki Dodge of Lansing, and Pamela Nethers (Richard) of Rosebush; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Dale House (Nina), Arlo House (Barb), and Gary House (Shirley), all of Rosebush; 3 sisters, Enid Nestle (George) of Rosebush, Theda LaLone (Morval) of Mt. Pleasant, and Verda Bean (Bob) of Rosebush; 1 brother-in-law John Funnell of Port Charlotte, FL; several nieces and nephews; and best friends, Virginia Bader of Mt. Pleasant and Louise Lobsinger of Mt. Pleasant.

Wanda was preceded in death by parents and her parents-in-law Henry and Leila Funnell.

McDonald, Valeria Elizabeth
November 23, 1916 - April 5, 2002

Valeria E. McDonald, age 85, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility on April 5, 2002.

A Funeral Mass for Valeria will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, at Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Robert Byrne officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Sunday, April 7, from 7-9 p.m. and on Monday, April 8, from 4-9 p.m. There will be a vigil service on Monday at 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions in memory of Valeria may be made to the HHT Foundation, a rare disorder afflicting members of the McDonald Family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Valeria was born November 23, 1916, to William and Matilda (Martin) Starr. She married Russell C. McDonald on August 7, 1937, at St. Philomena Church in Beal City. Together they raised nine children who survive her, Don (Maxine) McDonald of Mt. Pleasant, Tom (Laurie) McDonald of Holt, Mary Lynn (Tom) Bott of Remus, Bill (Pat) McDonald of Lansing, John (Sharon) McDonald of Shepherd, Suzanne (Tom) Courser of Mt. Pleasant, Linda (Gary) Ray of Harrison, Janet McDonald of Traverse City, and Marcia McDonald of Clare. Valeria is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren, sister Anita McGuire of Mt. Pleasant, sister-in-law Margaret MacDonald of Jackson, and several nieces and nephews.

Valeria was preceded in death by her husband Russell on April 6, 1978, her parents William and Matilda Starr, sister Wilma, and brother Martin.

Rodgers, Lynn F.
October 4, 1919 - April 5, 2002

Lynn F. Rodgers, 82, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2002, at Mid Michigan Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services for Lynn will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, at Clark Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Obrecht of the First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Interment will follow in Green cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Chapel on Monday, April 8, from 4-9 p.m. and on Tuesday, April 9, from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Envelopes will be available at the funeral chapel.

Lynn was born on October 4, 1919, in Sherman City, Michigan, the son of Frank and Mary (Bywater) Rodgers. He served in the United States Army from 1940-1944 . Lynn married Bonnie Lou Thayer on October 11, 1966, in Leaton, Michigan. He had worked as a truck driver for Blodgett Oil, Beard Oil, and Allen Lumber. Lynn had also worked in the Mt. Pleasant Parks and Recreation Department through Green Thumb. On July 5, 1994, Lynn was attacked by the bear in Nelson Park which he cared for.

Lynn is survived his wife Bonnie Lou Rodgers; his children, Jeffrey Rodgers of Cadillac, Janice Rodgers of Mt. Pleasant, and Anissa Koch (Doug) of Midland; 4 grandchildren, Lynese Schaaf, Christy Roof, Amber Hammond, and Jennifer Hammond; 4 great-grandchildren, Jessica Schaaf, Charlotte, Schaaf, Corina Roof, and Gabriel Roof; and many nieces and nephews.

Lynn was preceded in death by his son Ronnie Rodgers and 2 sisters, Myra Morton and Lois Jarrett.

Wilson, Joshua Craig
July 17, 1976 - August 2, 2002

Joshua Craig Wilson, 26, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Friday, August 2, at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids as a result of injuries from an automobile accident.

Funeral Services for Joshua will be held on Tuesday, August 6, at 11 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel, with Rev. David Crandall of First Baptist Church officiating.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 4, from 7-9 p.m., and Monday, August 5, from 5-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Joshua’s son, Eric James Wilson. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Joshua was born on July 17, 1976, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Clare and Bonnie (Gannon) Wilson. He was a college student and worked for Home Depot. Joshua dearly loved his son, Eric. He was friendly, always smiling and had a heart of gold. Joshua loved music and cars and enjoyed the computer.

Joshua is survived by his son Eric James Wilson; his parents, Clare and Bonnie Wilson of Mt. Pleasant; his brother Thomas (Dolly) Wilson of Mt. Pleasant; his sister Victoria (Craig) Battle of Mt. Pleasant; his nieces and nephews Amber and Chad Battle, Brock Williams, and Brandy Wilson, all of Mt. Pleasant; many aunts uncles and cousins. He is also survived by his son’s mother Debra Weir of Mt. Pleasant. He will be missed by many friends, especially Brooke

Halfmann, Anna Jane
December 6, 1928 - July 30, 2002

Anna Jane Halfmann, age 73, of Rosebush passed away Tuesday, July 30th, at her home.

A Funeral Mass for Anna will be held on Friday, August 2nd, at 11:00 a.m. from St. Henry’s Catholic Church with Fr. Jeffrey Donner and Sr. Mary Ellen McDonald officiating, with interment in Calvary cemetery in Mt. Pleasant.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 1st, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel with a Vigil held at 7:00p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Michigan or Community Cancer services. Envelopes will be available at Clark Funeral Chapel.

Anna was born December 6, 1928, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Julius and Alida (Claus) Windel. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1947. Anna then married Vernon Halfmann on November 13, 1948, at Sacred Heart. Anna worked in the office at the Leonard Refinery and later worked as an accountant at the Mt. Pleasant Regional Center where she retired from in 1992 after 21 years of service. Anna was a member of St. Henry’s church and the Altar Society. She enjoyed cross stitching, gardening, fishing, playing cards, attending her grandchildren’s baseball games and exercising.

Anna is survived by her husband Vernon of 53 years; her daughters, Judy (Bruce) York of Mt. Pleasant, Susan (Steven) Pickens of Rosebush, Bonnie (Ray) Sisco of Lake; son Mark Halfmann of Mt. Pleasant; 9 grandchildren; 5 great granchildren; sisters Alice D’Hulster of Harper Woods, MI, Helen (Norman) Johnson of Mt. Pleasant, Laura Pohl of Mt. Pleasant, Leona (Ken) Halfmann of Rosebush, and Rosemarie Robinson of Lansing.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents Julius and Alida Windel.

Nicholson, Orval (Nick) J.
November 20, 1915 - July 24, 2002

Orval J. Nicholson, 86, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2002, at Isabella County Medical Care Facility.

Funeral Services for Orval will be held on Saturday, July 27, at 11 a.m. from Clark Funeral Chapel with Pastor Wayne Boughan of Trinity Wesleyan Church officiating. Interment will follow in Two Rivers cemetery in Isabella County.

The family will receive friends on Friday, July 26, from 1-8 p.m. at Clark Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Isabella Seniors, Isabella County Medical Care Facility, or donor’s choice.

Orval was born November 20, 1915, in Ann Arbor, the son of Luther and Emma (Packard) Nicholson. He married Agnes Beerman on March 9, 1935, and they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year. Orval worked for many years for Marchiando and Rau Masonry and retired in 1978. Up until the time of his death he enjoyed, and took pride in, driving by and telling stories about the buildings that he helped construct as a brick mason. Orval was in the CCC Camp in 1933 and 1934 in Big Bay, MI. When Orval retired in 1978 he and Agnes moved to Big Bay, Michigan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling. In his younger years he played the accordian at dances and weddings. Orval and Agnes moved back to Mt. Pleasant in 1986 to be closer to their children.

Orval is survived by his wife Agnes Nicholson of Mt. Pleasant; his daughters Lois (Joe) Clark of Mt. Pleasant, Sharon (Vern) Davis of Harrison, Flora (Phillip) Mena of Mt. Pleasant; his son Orval “Butch” (Dorothy) Nicholson, Jr.; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; his sisters Margaret (Phillip) Kunzelman of Gregory, MI and Florence (Ken) Oswald of Zephyr Hills, FL; many nieces and nephews, and his pet and companion Tiffany.

Orval was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter Kimberly Nicholson; his brothers MacDonald Bovee and Calvin (Junior) Bovee.
