September 6, 1910 - June 13, 2006

Mary Margaret Peterson, age 95, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at The Laurels of Mt. Pleasant.
Interment of the cremated remains will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot, North Dakota.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to St. Vincent DePaul Charity. Envelopes are available at Helms Funeral Home, 330 S. University Ave., Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858.
Mary was born on Saturday, September 6, 1910 in Walsh County, North Dakota the daughter of Wenceslaws and Frances (Kulus) Rose.
She married Willard Peterson on January 4, 1942 in St. Clair, Michigan. Mary has been a resident of the Mt. Pleasant, Michigan area since her retirement from the St. Clair, Michigan Public Schools where she worked as a teacher. She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church in St. Clair, Michigan. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards with friends and traveling on bus tours with The Seniors.
Mary and Willard never had children of their own, she is survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Willard on April 22, 1972; seven brothers and a sister.

Emily Marie Kahgegab
July 26, 1919 - June 9, 2006

Emily Marie Kahgegab, age 86, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Friday, June 9, 2006 at Tendercare Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Chippewa Indian United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Owen White Pigeon officiating. Interment will follow at Denver Township cemetery, Isabella County, Michigan.
Friends may gather with the family on Monday, June 12, 2006 after 2 p.m. at the Chippewa Indian United Methodist Church on the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe Reservation.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to Tribal Education, Alzheimers Association, Community Cancer Services, or to Tribal Education. Envelopes are available at Helms Funeral Home.
Emily was born on Saturday, July 26, 1919 in Rosebush, Michigan the daughter of Jason and Nora (Roddotter) Collins. She married Nelson Kahgegab on September 2, 1936 in Rosebush, Michigan. Emily was a lifetime resident of the Mt. Pleasant area.
Emily was a member of the Chippewa Indian United Methodist Church and the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, serving on the tribal council. She worked as a nurses aide at the Isabella Convalescent Home for fifteen years. She also worked at the Commission on Aging as a Meal Site Manager for seventeen years. She enjoyed bowling, making beautiful beadwork, senior trips and was a cancer survivor.
Emily is survived by her children: Lorna (Jack) Call, Diana Trepanier, Maynard Kahgegab, Sr., and Roxene Judson; grandchildren: Tim (Adelaide) Davis, Raymond (Merdine) Davis, Corinne Schelling, Frank Davis, Kim (Mike) McCoy, Carmen Otto, David (Helen) Otto, Michelle Otto, Paula King, Martin Francis, George (Maryanne) Francis, Ross (Winona) Francis, Maury Francis, Rachel (Mike David) Francis, Leanne Francis, Nina Francis, Reba Navejar, John Trepanier, James (Cindy) Trepanier, Trent (Dana Reyes) Trepanier, Kurt (Kristin Hinmon) Trepanier, Camille (John) Grice, Maynard Kahgegab, Jr., Travis Kahgegab, Jessica (Anthony Towns) Kahgegab, Courtney (Keehta) Wemigwans, Ryan (Anna) Kahgegab, Emily Kahgegab, Katlin Kahgegab, Ronald Judson, Jr., Culver (Jackie) Judson, Gabriel (Pam) Judson, and Amelia Judson; thirty seven great grandchildren, and thirteen great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Nelson, on March 31, 1993; children Melvin Kahgegab, Yvonne Davis, Nelxine Francis, Willard Kahgegab, and Douglas Kahgegab; brother: Cecil Collins; grandchildren; Nicolas Davis, Twyla Shomin, Nelson James Kahgegab, and Kelly Douglas Kahgegab; and great grandchildren: Alexandria Sawmick, and Frankie Lee Davis.

Edward John Whitepigeon
September 27, 1929 - May 29, 2006

Edward John Whitepigeon, age 76, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Monday, May 29, 2006 at Central Michigan Community Hospital, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.
The funeral service took place on Friday, June 2, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant with Bucko Teeple, Pipe Carrier officiating, Interment was at Riverside cemetery, Hamilton, Michigan on Saturday, June 3, 2006.
Friends gathered with the family on Thursday, June 1, 2006 from 4 9 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home.
The family suggested memorial contributions to the Disabled American Veterans. Envelopes were available at Helms Funeral Home.
Edward was born on Friday, September 27, 1929 in Holland, Michigan the son of William and Clara (Rosette) Whitepigeon. He has been a resident of the area for several years.
Edward served as an Admissions Recruiter for the University of Michigan, was a former Tribal Administrator for the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member of the Ogitchidaw Warrior Society, and a past member of the National Guard. He graduated from Holland High School in 1948, was a graduate of Cook Theological Seminary, was a graduate of Phoenix College, a graduate of Western Michigan University, and attended Arizona State. He helped found the Grand Rapids Inter Tribal Council, was a founder of the Native American Business Association. Member of the Huron Pottawattamie Tribe, an Elder for Mide Widjig, and organized the Little Elk Pow Wow at the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. He was active with both the State and Federal Governments.
Edward is survived by his former spouse Virginia Pigeon; Children: Jerome (Stella Davis) Pigeon Sr., Jeffrery Pigeon Sr., Julie Whitepigeon (DArtagnan), Jocelyn Perkins, Douglas Speer, William Whitepigeon and Shauna Whitepigeon; a brother Calvin Whitepigeon; 20 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; a brother; and daughter: Gayle.

Dorothy J. Riley
October 5, 1925 - May 28, 2006

Dorothy J. Riley, age 80, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2006 at the Sparrow Specialty Hospital in Lansing, Michigan.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2006 at 1 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Interment will follow in Riverside cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, beside her husband and son.
Friends may gather with the family on Tuesday, May 30 from 6-8 p.m. and on Wednesday, May 31 from 2-8 p.m.
The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home.
Dorothy was born on Monday, October 5, 1925 in Delpos, Ohio the daughter of Daniel and Erma (Bogkins) Jones. She married Ernest Riley in 1945 in Lima, Ohio. Ernest preceded her in death in 1969. Dorothy was a resident of Mt. Pleasant since 1963. She was retired from National City Bank, where she had been employed for 25 years, working in various positions, including a teller, and when she retired, she worked at the switchboard. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi. She enjoyed shopping, eating out with her friends, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include her son, Daniel and his wife Christine Riley of Allen Park, Michigan, six grandchildren, and many great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; a son Michael Ernest on March 6, 1987; one sister, and both parents.

Iva May Keller
May 13, 1920 - May 24, 2006

Iva May Keller, age 102, of Mt. Pleasant, MI, passed away May 24, 2006 at Isabella County Medical Care Facility.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 27, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Helms Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Abbey officiating. Interment will be at Fairview cemetery, Weidman.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 26 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Iva May Keller was born May 8, 1904 in Leota, MI to Harry I. Van Auker and Essie F. Howard. She married Loren Keller on May 13, 1920 and lived most of her life in the Mt. Pleasant area. She worked until she was 99 with the Commission on Aging Foster grandparents fro 28 years at Mary McGuire and Pullen Schools. She was one of the first grandparents in the program. She loved the children and they enjoyed her many hugs.
Iva is survived by two sons, Calvin (Betty) Keller and Fred (Reanne) Keller, both of Mt. Pleasant; two daughters, Alice (Othel) Denslow of Rosebush, Merlie Nesbit-Howard of Hart; 24 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; and 42 great great grandchildren. Iva was preceded in death by her husband, Loren in 1950; 2 sons, Lyle of Mt. Pleasant and Robert of Pennsylvania; 2 infant daughters, Dorothy and Edna May; grandsons, Don Nesbit and Al Findley; granddaughter, Vicki Keller and great granddaughter, Brandi Keller; daughters-in-law, Florence Keller and Virginia Keller; sons-in-law, Floyd Nesbit and Lyle Howard; brother and sister-in-law, Mel and Edna Van Auker; also her special friend, Sam Bailey.

Carl H. Baumgardner
Oct. 15, 1920 - May 24, 2006

Carl H. Baumgardner, Professor Emeritus of Central Michigan University, died at Central Michigan Community Hospital of complications from pneumonia. He was 85 years old.
He was born to George and Amy (Goodin) Baumgardner in Mason City, Illinois and graduated from San Jose High School, San Jose, Illinois, in 1938. He then earned a B. Ed. Degree at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois in 1942. In July 1942, he and Mary Schneider were married in Bloomington, Illinois.
He volunteered for service in the U.S. Army and served from August, 1942 until October, 1945. During those years he was part of the Far East Air Forces which accompanied General Douglas MacArthur from Australia to New Guinea to Leyte and Manila in the Philippines. Following his discharge from the army he taught at Thawville High School in Thawville, Illinois, and began work on his doctorate at the University of Illinois. In June 1952, he received his Ed. D. degree and became a member of the faculty of what is now Central Michigan University in the summer of 1952.
During the years between 1952 and his retirement in 1983 he participated in the development and growth of the programs in secondary education and in University governance at Central Michigan University. During those years three children, Margaret (Edward) Kushner, Mark (Kim) Gardner, and Kevin (Gretchen) Baumgardner were born who survive him along with his wife and three grandchildren, Andrew and Sarah Kushner and Kyra Gardner.
He is also survived by one sister, Betty Joan (Nip) Baumgardner of Bloomington, Illinois. Preceding him in death were sisters Edna, Marie, Hazel, Martha, Wilma, and Shirley as well as two brothers, Raymond and George (Pat).
Carls absorbing hobby was discovering and restoring antique furniture. He collected wooden duck decoys, various stained glass items, bells, seafaring artifacts, wooden carvings and brass pieces.
The family will receive friends at Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan on Saturday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the charities of your choice or the general scholarship fund at Central Michigan University. In accordance with the wishes of the deceased, there will be no funeral services.

Leland Clifford Chamberlain
June 19, 1935 - May 18, 2006.

Leland C. Chamberlain, age 70, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Mid Michigan Medical Center in Midland.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, May 22 at 2:00 P.M. at Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Doyle Perry officiating. Interment will take place at Denver Township cemetery following the funeral services.
Friends gathered with the family on Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.
Memorial Contributions were suggested to Community Cancer Services. Envelopes are available at Helms Funeral Home.
Leland was born on June 19, 1935 in Delwin, Michigan, the son of Samuel and Dorothy (Vandervane) Chamberlain.
He married Wilma Atkinson on October 12, 1963 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. He worked for 32 years Oldsmobile in Lansing, Michigan as a tool and die setup man. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local # 652. Leland was a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. A long time resident of St. Johns, he lived in Mt. Pleasant for the last two years.
Survivors include four sons; Clifford (Sheri) Chamberlain, of Shepherd, Tracy Chamberlain and his fiancee (Chris Hickerson) of Midland, Terry Chamberlain of Mt. Pleasant, Troy (Ann) Chamberlain of Shepherd; a daughter Julie (Frank) VanQuez of Mt. Pleasant, a brother; Joseph Chamberlain of St. Johns, and half-brother Samuel (Bobbie) Chamberlain; three sisters; Beverly (Vernon Hacker) Chamberlain of Mt. Pleasant, Tweedie Vancise of Harrison, MI, and Evelyn Hawkins of Marasyktown, FL; thirteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Dorothy (Vandervane) Chamberlain, sons, Leland Jr. & Harvey Chamberlain, a half-brother, Raymond Chamberlain; a half-sister, Judy Mast, and a daughter-in-law, Robin Chamberlain.

Doris May Stancato
May 15, 1925 - May 15, 2006

Doris May Stancato, Age 81, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Monday, May 15, 2006 at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. No funeral services are planned at this time.
A Mt. Pleasant, Michigan resident for 38 years, Doris was a teacher in the Mt. Pleasant Public School system.
Doris was born on May 15, 1925, the daughter of Earl and Minnie (Morrison) McCormick in Britt, Iowa.
Doris is survived by her husband, Frank Stancato; two sons Tom and Perry (Linda) Stancato; and her three grandchildren Stefanie (Terry), Samantha and Lindsey.

Alfred Stanley Thomas
May 24, 1920 - May 9, 2006

Alfred Stanley Thomas, age 85, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at Margarets Meadow, near Mt. Pleasant.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2006 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. John Boley officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.
Friends may gather with the family on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home and again on Thursday, from 10 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Alzheimers Association. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home.
Alfred was born on Monday, May 24, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan the son of Stephen Stanley and Esther (Patrick) Thomas. He married Mildred Louise DaLee on March 15, 1944 in Birmingham, Michigan. He has been a resident of the Mt. Pleasant area since 1949. Alfred was employed as a professor at Central Michigan University. He was also an Assistant Track Coach, Football Assistant Coach, Chair of the Physical Education Department and spearheaded the CMU Athletic Hall of Fame. Alfred was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Alfred is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Mildred Millie Thomas; children: Carolyn Kitty Thomas, and Marilyn (Don) Thomas Price. Grandchildren: Daniel and Will; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
