Betty L. Lawson
August 23, 1925 -- February 23, 2009

Betty L. Lawson, age 83, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2009 at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant. Betty was born on Sunday, August 23, 1925 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, the daughter of Frederick and Violet (Workman) DeStoop. On December 31, 1945 in Mt. Pleasant, Betty married Jack L. Lawson. He preceded Betty in death in 1989.
Betty was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. She was a member of the Red Hats at Tendercare, where she was also President of the Tendercare Residents Association. Betty was active with the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department when her husband worked there. Jack retired from the department as Fire Chief. She was a resident of Mt. Pleasant for most of her life.
A service in celebration of Bettys life was held on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the Helms Funeral Home with Fr. Loren Kalinowski of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating. Interment followed the service in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens beside her husband, Jack. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Woodland Hospice, Mt. Pleasant in Bettys memory.
Betty is survived by her two children and their spouses, Sherman and Marion Lawson of Murray, Kentucky and Jacqueline L. and Roger Hill of Clayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, both parents, and a brother.

Shantanise Hoffmeyer
February 22, 2009

Shantanise Hoffmeyer, stillborn infant of Kim Blythe and Jimmy Hoffmeyer, of Vestaburg, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2009 at Central Michigan Community Hospital. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.

Bertram Bert Schmidt
August 3, 1931 -- February 15, 2009

Bertram Bert Adams Schmidt, age 77, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2009 at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant.
A gathering of friends and family took place on Saturday, February 21, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Memorial contributions in honor of Bert are suggested to the Charity of Ones Choice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Bert was born Monday, August 3, 1931 in Hibbing, Minnesota, the son of Harold Albert and Eleanor Adams Schmidt. He served in the US Army at the end of the Korean Conflict. He has been a resident of Mt. Pleasant since 1968. On October 15, 1971, he married Abigail Hadley in Mt. Pleasant. Bert was an associate professor of Mathematics at Central Michigan University, was a mechanical engineer for many years, and wrote articles for professional journals. Bert was an avid wood carver and enjoyed silver carving, drawing, bike riding, hiking, and cooking pies and cookies.
Bert is survived by his wife, Abigail Shippen Hadley of Mt. Pleasant; a son, Aaron Hadley Schmidt of Chicago; and a brother and his wife, Harold Albert and Sharon Schmidt, Jr. of Minnesota and Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dennis E. Zeplin
February 13, 1945 - February 10, 2009

Dennis Zeplin, age 63, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at his home in Mt. Pleasant.

Audra Mercy Flanders
November 2, 2008 -- February 12, 2009

On February 12, 2009, Audra Mercy Flanders passed suddenly early in the morning. Though she was born with Downs Syndrome and its associated complications, Audra was especially vigorous and fought hard to overcome her physical difficulties. She was born on November 2, 2008. During her brief 103 day stay on this earth, she embedded herself into the hearts of her family and others who knew her. Her parents, Barry and Suzanne Flanders, and her brothers and sisters, Charis, Ralph, John, Peter, Anna, Casey, Mary, Luke, Marcus, and Lauren Flanders, deeply miss her and ask for your prayers. Audra is also survived by her grandmother, Martha Gorton; many aunts, uncles, and cousins located throughout the United States. She is preceded in death by her grandfathers, Ralph Robert Flanders, and Donald P. Gorton; her grandmother, Hilda E. Flanders; and her uncle, Ralph Robert Flanders, II. A worship and memorial service was held at Grace Church, 218 South Main Street in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, February 14 at 5:00 p.m., and again on Sunday, February 15 at 10:00 a.m. All were welcomed to attend. Interment was in Riverside cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Memorial contributions to the Flanders family wishes may be sent to Grace Church at the above address or to Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.

Joyce Ann Rueckert
November 25, 1954 - January 28, 2009

Joyce Ann (McMillan) Rueckert, age 54, of Clare, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Joyce was born on Thursday, November 25, 1954 in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Archie Edwin and Esther Agnes (Evans) McMillan.
Joyce was employed for the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe in Tribal Operations where she worked as an internal auditor for twenty years. She was a member of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians in Petoskey. She was a resident of the Mt. Pleasant and Clare area for the past twenty years. Hobbies included playing golf, doing beadwork crafts, sewing, and bowling.
Memorial services were held for family and friends on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 2 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Interment of the cremated remains will take place in East Lawn Memory Gardens in Okemos, Michigan at a later date. Friends thinking of making a contribution in Joyces memory may consider the needs of the young members of her family. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Joyce is survived by her four sons, Matthew (Anglyn) Makomenaw of Mt. Pleasant, Marc (Teresa) VanAlstine of Mt. Pleasant, Wayne and Zachary Young, both of Mt. Pleasant; one granddaughter, Odeno Makomenaw; two brothers, Archie (Marie) McMillan of Lansing, and Donald McMillan of Mt. Pleasant; seven sisters: Arvilla (Mike) Bateman of East Lansing, Joan (Brent) Brown of Simpsonville, SC, Janice (Richard) Beckhorn of Lansing, Marie Simmons, Carol (Richard) Hubble, Sue Vertz, and Audrey Hegenbarth, all of Mt. Pleasant, along with many nieces and nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Jerry and Bruce McMillan, and a sister, Judith Tackett.

Charles H. Fulk
September 27, 1944 - January 11, 2009

Charles H. Fulk, age 87, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at Covenant Health Care in Saginaw, Michigan. Charles was born on October 6, 1921 in Nashville, Wisconsin, the son of Ernest and Pearl (Berry) Fulk. On September 27, 1944, he married the former Vivian Dowling in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
A private funeral service was held for the family. Friends gathered with the family on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Interment took place in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations in Charless memory may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
Charles was a resident of Mt. Pleasant since the late 1940s. He was a veteran of the Army Air Force, serving during World War II. It was in Carlsbad, New Mexico where he was stationed at the time, that he met a young WAC named Vivian Dowling. It wasnt long before they were married . A daughter Aprial and a son Dwight were born from this marriage. In 1962, Charles and Vivian started Mt. Pleasant Heating, working from their home and using the enclosed back porch to store equipment and supplies. As the business grew, they rented space for their shop, and then built their own building. When Charles turned sixty-five years old, he sold the business to his son, Dwight, but continued to go the shop everyday up until a short time before his death, when his health started to fail. Charles loved watching his grandchildren while they were growing up, never missing an activity they were involved in. He enjoyed working in his yard and his flowers. He and Vivian enjoyed going to the airport to watch the airplanes land and take off, a remembrance of their service days together. He also enjoyed playing his guitar.
Charles is survived by his wife of sixty four years, Vivian; his children, Aprial and Ken Curry and Dwight and Lesle Fulk, all of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren; Renae and Scott Pung, Rachelle and Mike Conroy, Risa Scully, Kenneth and Lynn Curry, and Chad and Sharon Curry; twelve great grandchildren; a brother, Heber Fulk of St. Louis; two sisters, Ginny and Bill Duff of Crandon, Wisconsin, and Betty and Al Moreno of Chicago, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents, three brothers, and two sisters.

Rosemary Rae Davis
Nov. 16, 1946 - Jan. 6, 2009

Our beloved mother, grandmother Rosemary Rae Davis passed away on Tuesday, January 6th 2009 surrounded by her children at Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater, Michigan. Rosemary was born on November 16, 1946 in Chicago, Ill. and was a graduate of Central Michigan University. In life, Rosemary's passion was helping people in need at any cost which led her to opening her own private practice, Omega Counseling Centers. Rosemary was a selfless woman who gave her all to family, friends and the community. During Rosemary's retirement her grandchildren were her greatest love. Rosemary is survived by her three children Daniel, Patricia and Richard and three grandchildren Victoria, Katelyn and James. You'll be missed.
A private service is being held in her memory.

Margaret Louise Donaldson
September 16, 1920 - January 3, 2009

Margaret Louise Donaldson, age 88, of Naples, Florida, and Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2009 in Naples, Florida. Margaret was born on Thursday, September 16, 1920 in Shawnee, Ohio, the daughter of Noah and Lola (Miller) Andrews. On March 26, 1937, she married William Donaldson, Sr. in Mt. Pleasant. William preceded her in death on September 25, 1997.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at 11 a.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. John Boley of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed the ceremony at Memorial Gardens, where Margaret as intered beside her husband. Friends called at the Helms Funeral Home on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions were suggested to Avow Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, Florida 34105. Envelopes were available at the funeral home.
Margaret moved to Mt. Pleasant when she was twelve years old. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant for many years. She was a homemaker who enjoyed reading and her bridge club.
Survivors included her daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Gil Cox of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, two grandchildren: William McGee and Suzanne Walton, eight great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, a son, William Donaldson, Jr., both parents, and a brother, Earl Andrews.

Tanya Sue Mogg
April 6, 1978 - November 25, 2009

Tanya Sue Mogg, age 31, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. Tanya was born on April 6, 1978 in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Joseph and Linda (Steele) Mogg.
Tanya was a lifetime area resident. She was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. Tanya enjoyed working on her computer, cooking shows, telling her family what to cook for dinner, going out to eat, attending country music concerts, and especially listening to Brad Paisley. She enjoyed reading, and had her own library of books she loaned out to family and friends. Tanya enjoyed playing cards with Grandma Steele, who said she was one of a kind.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, November 28 at 11 a.m. from the Helms Funeral Home with Pastor Ray Freeze officiating. Interment followed the funeral service in Chippewa Township cemetery. The family gathered with friends on Friday, November 27 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials were suggested to a charity of the donors choice in Tanyas memory.
Tanya was survived by her parents, Linda and Joe, her sisters, Rachel and Nathan Mead of Jenison, Michigan and their children, Aidan and Brian, and her sister Rebecca Mogg and fiancée Kevin White of Mt. Pleasant. Her grandmother, Nelva Steele of Shepherd, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by grandparents, Cliff and Erma Mogg and Deene Steele.

Cayetano "Pete" Valdez Guerrero
August 7, 1918 - November 19, 2009

Cayetano Pete Valdez Guerrero, age 91, of Rosebush, Michigan passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at his sons home in Alma. Pete was born on Wednesday, August 7, 1918 in Maxwell, Texas, the son of Christobal and Anastasia (Valdez) Guerrero.
A celebration of Pete's life was held on Monday, November 23, 2009 at 2:00 PM from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Linda Drozd of Christ Our Savior Church officiating. Interment of the cremated remains will be at a later date in Riverside cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Friends met with the family on Monday from Noon until the time of the services. Memorial contributions are suggested to Woodland Hospice. Envelopes were available at Helms Funeral Home. On August 24, 1987, Pete married Zetave Jenny Bryan. Jenny preceded him in death. On May 18, 1995, Pete married Pearl Johnson in Mt. Pleasant. Pete was a custodian at Central Michigan University for more than 10 years. He was a member of the VFW, the Moose Lodge, and the Eagles Lodge in Mt. Pleasant.
Pete was survived by his wife, Pearl; his children, Juan D. Johnny Guerrero, Amada K. 'Molly' (Adislado) Garcia, Flavio A. Floyd (Matilde) Guerrero, Rita J. (Guerrero) Castillo, Julianna Judy (Guerrero) Nieto, Mary A. (Frank) Martinez, Christopher P. Chris (Renae) Guerrero; thirty seven grandchildren; sixty nine great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; nine step children, twenty three step grandchildren; twenty seven step great grandchildren; three sisters, Senovia Ortiz, Preciliana Gonzales and Juanita Herrera; several nieces and nephews. Pete was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jenny; two brothers, Nick and Ben; one sister, Andrea; and a son, Celestino Guerrero.

Leon K. Lyon
August 15, 1945 - November 15, 2009

Leon K. Lyon, age 64, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at his home after a long illness. Leon was born on Wednesday, August 15, 1945 in Midland, Michigan, the son of Leo and Daisy (Roberts) Lyon. On July 8, 1978, Leon married Luella Doty in St. Louis, Michigan.
Leon was employed as a laborer for Mt. Pleasant Salvage and Steel for over 10 years. Leon was a sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and wrestling with his children and grandchildren. He was a resident of the area all of his life. He will be missed by his family and many friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home with Brother Richard Boyce officiating. Friends called at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Following the funeral service, burial took place in Chippewa Township cemetery in Isabella County. Memorial contributions were suggested to the family for funeral expenses.
Leon was survived by his wife, Luella; a daughter, Carol (Greg) Vest of Vestaburg; two sons, Leon Jr. Lyon, and Obie (Dee) Lyon both of Mt. Pleasant; six grandchildren, Kathena and Luke Vest, Samantha, Kenda, and Ryan Cadotte, and Carrie Whitman; brothers, Richard (Delores) Lyon of Flint, and Mike Lyon of Mt. Pleasant; and sisters, Rose Jacob of Weidman, Idell Nostrant of Mt. Pleasant, Nancy Bower of Tennessee, and Mary (Harold) Jacob of Clare. Leon was preceded in death by both parents; brothers, Charles, Leoduane, and Calvin; and sisters, Lorraine, Audrey, and Thelma.
