Hope Furse Carlson
September 25, 1915 -- February 4, 2010

Hope Furse Carlson, age 94, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Maplewood in Mt. Pleasant. Hope was born in Alma, Nebraska on September 25, 1915, the sixth child in a family of seven, and the only girl of Harry C. and Bertha Dow Furse.
Hope met her future husband, Aubrey A. Carlson, at Hastings College in Nebraska where they were students. They were married on June 4, 1939 in Alma, Nebraska. Aubrey preceded her in death in August 2001. Hope began teaching in a one room rural school near Alma, Nebraska. Later she taught in Republican City, Stanton, and Alma, Nebraska before moving to Mt. Pleasant when her husband joined the faculty at C.M.U. After completing her studies at C.M.U., she taught at Fancher School in Mt. Pleasant and was a member of the first faculty at Vowles Elementary School. Since 1953, Hope was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder, a Deacon, and a Sunday school teacher for many years and was active in the Presbyterian Womens organizations. Hope was a member of the first committee formed to offer a Literacy Program in Mt. Pleasant and taught some of the early volunteers in the program. Until her husbands illness, she served as a volunteer with C.M.C.H. Auxiliary.
Aubrey and Hope were the parents of two children, Susan Kay, and David Kim (Louise), and three grandchildren, Dori Hope (Zach) Foster, and Alana and Aaron Carlson, and a great granddaughter, Cambre Foster. One of her brothers, Hubert Furse (Virginia) of Omaha survives, along with two sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Hopes life will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 11 a.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Dr. Stephen Shugert of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens beside her husband, Aubrey. Friends may gather with the family on Friday, February 5 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends have been asked to consider memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church or Woodland Hospice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home

Evelena White
September 9, 1921 -- January 26, 2010

Evelena White of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Lansing, Michigan died on Tuesday, January 26, 2010. She was born in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. She was a faithful Jehovahs Witness for over fifty four years.
Her husband Tommie preceded her in death. They had six children, Woodrow (Irene), Vernisha, Brenda Jean, Barbara (Karl), Tom (Esther), and Alice.
Evelena has eight sisters, Lillian Jackson, Vernon Gantt, Vera Shade, Evie Shade, Eris Foster, Lexie Padgett, Francis Smith, and Rosanna Toms and seven brothers, Woodrow Humphries, Edward Humphries, Raleigh Humphries, Joe Louis Humphries, Charlie Humphries, Herbert Humphries, and Willie Humphries.
Evelena has six grandchildren, Allesha, Woodrow, Reggie, Andrew, Stephen, and Branden and four great grandchildren, Darius, Desmond, Woodrow, and Karla. She has many other family members and a host of loving friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses, 8065 East Broadway, in Mt. Pleasant with Brian Cooper officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will take place in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Dimondale, Michigan at a later date.
A gathering for family and friends was held at Jamison Hall on Budd Road off Pickard near Isabella Road in Mt. Pleasant following the services.

Allen Thomas Costello
August 7, 1935 - January 15, 2010

Allen Thomas Costello, age 74, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Friday, January 15, 2010 at his home. Allen was born on August 7, 1935 in Cook County, Illinois, the son of Michael and Margaret Dooley Costello.
A celebration of Allens life was held on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the VFW Post 3033, 4841 East Pickard Street, in Mt. Pleasant with American Legion Chaplin Duane Dishong officiating. The family received friends at the Post an hour before the services. Interment will be in Stephenson cemetery in South Haven, Michigan at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to Morey Cancer Center at Central Michigan Community Hospital. Envelopes are available at Helms Funeral Home and at the service.
On November 18, 1954, Allen married Shirley Ely in Paw Paw, Michigan. Allen entered the service in 1953 and was a career veteran serving for twenty years. He received basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He joined the airborne unit at Fort Bragg, NC and completed forty four jumps from aircraft in flight. His other duties included squad leader and supply sergeant. He served in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot and trained many others. He had numerous decorations including a bronze star and a purple heart. After his retirement and moving to Mt. Pleasant, Allen was the manager of the WalMart store in Mt. Pleasant. He also received his college degree and was a substitute teacher for the public schools.
Allen is survived by his wife, Shirley; his children, Brennda, Darlena, Allen Tom, Jr., Honey, Cathleen, and Rita; eleven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Robert Allen Hubbard
April 25, 1989 - January 15, 2010

Robert Allen Hubbard, age 20, of Midland, passed away on Friday, January 15, 2010 at his home. Robert was born on April 25, 1989 in Grayling, Michigan the son of Tony and Peggy Phovemire Hubbard.
A celebration of Roberts life was held on Wednesday, January 20, at 2:00 PM from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Friends called an hour before the services. Memorial contributions are suggested to the wishes of the family. Envelopes are available at the Funeral Home.
Robert was a lifetime resident of the area and enjoyed being with his family and friends.
Robert is survived by his uncle Bob of St. Helen, Shane and Flossie Phovemire of Midland and Diane Phovemire of St. Helen; friends, Chrissy and Albert Knapp, Ed Planer, Faye Rood, and Paula Mom Watson; and the nurses from Heartland Hospice, Kathy, Karen, Janice, Angel, and Deb.

Winifred Agnes Aggie Morrison Wing
April 27, 1926 - September 7, 2005

Winifred Agnes Aggie Morrison Wing, age 79 of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 at the Cleveland Heart Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 12, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Richard Fulkerson of the Central Michigan Free Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow the service in Riverside cemetery, Mt. Pleasant.
Friends may gather with the family on Sunday, September 11 from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home.
Agnes was born on Tuesday, April 27, 1926 in Rosebush, Michigan the daughter of Peter Neil and Lillian Anne (Marshall) Morrison
On April 16, 1944, Agnes married Walter Wing in Mt. Pleasant. Walt preceded her in death on March 15, 1984.
Agnes was a lifetime area resident. Agnes was co-owner of W. W. Wing Auto Parts, a business she and Walt started in 1974. She was a member of the Central Michigan Free Methodist Church.
Memorial Contributions were suggested to the whishes of the family.
Aggie is survived by her children, Skip and Mary Wing of Mt. Pleasant, Jean and Lloyd Fry of Shepherd, Connie Wing and her significant other, Richard Davis of Rosebush, Penny and Lance Shattuck of Mt. Pleasant; twelve grandchildren, six great grandchildren; sister: Margurite Dent of Mt. Pleasant; sisters-in-law: Beulah Wing and Kay Morrison, both of Mt. Pleasant, and Bessie and Harold Snyder of Winn; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Walter in 1984; both parents; five brothers: Arthur, Francis, Don, Ivan and Robert; three sisters: Catherine Morrison, Mildred Morrison, and Bonnie Bowerman.

Creole (Tucker) Dalzell
February 17, 1911 - September 1, 2005

Creole (Tucker) Dalzell, age 94, died Thursday, September 1, 2005 at Boulevard Hills Nursing Facility in Rochester Hills, MI. Creole was born February 17, 1911 to C. Lavern and Anna A. (Dickerson) Tucker in Winn, MI.
Mrs. Dalzell had been a resident in Lexington, MI, and was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, Mt. Pleasant, MI. A Life Member of Lexington Order of the Eastern Star #137, Lexington, MI, General Federation of Womens Clubs of Mt. Pleasant, Life Member of Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and member of Isabella County Retired School Personnel. She retired from Central Michigan University in 1972.
Surviving are two sons, Richard J. and his wife, Jeanine, and Arthur B and his wife, Lauren. Three granddaughters survive: Deidre (Pat) Piechocki, Andrea (David) Griffin, and Leslie Dalzell. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Ciara Griffin, Linnea and Declan Piechocki. In addition, surviving is a sister, Lucretia Bailey, Wheeling, WV. Proceeding Mrs. Dalzell in death were her parents and a grandson, Michael.
Arrangements are by Helms Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant. Entombment will be in the mausoleum at Riverside cemetery. Family service will be provided by St. Johns Episcopal Church at the cemetery. Friends considering a memorial contribution in Creoles memory may wish to consider Central Michigan University. Memorials may be sent to Helms Funeral Home, 330 S. University Ave., Mt. Pleasant, Michigan 48858.

Ernestine (Skip) R. Lauer
June 9, 1915 - August 22, 2005

Ernestine Ross Lauer, 90, was promoted to her eternal home on Aug. 22 from Country Place Assisted Care in Mt. Pleasant, where she joined her parents, husband George N. Lauer, and brother and sister-in-law Irving (Ted) and Elizabeth Ross.
She was born to Irving Emerson and Florence Ernestine Ross on June 9, 1915 in Needham, MA. In The suburban town of Boston, she began her lifelong love of books and music by playing the violin and piano by ear. Ernestine was baptized into the Lords family at the First Baptist Church of Needham. She graduated from Needham H. S. in 1932, where she was known as Ernie and noted for her golden locks, being the best girl dancer, and the most humorous and optimistic girl. She commuted by train to Boston University where she was active in the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and graduated with a business degree in 1936. After working in advertising for a couple years, George N. Lauer came into her life and they were married in Needham on June 22, 1940. For their honeymoon they headed to Niagara Falls and on to MI to meet the Lauer family. After a visit to Mt. Pleasant to see his Alma Mater, they began their 30 year association with the University and Skip made their home for 65 years.
Ernestines life was a witness for her love of the Lord and her family by blessing others with her practical ways of providing for them. She was involved with the Laboratory school P.T.A., boy and girl scout activities and programs and functions at Central, including the Faculty Dames. Her involvement at the First United Methodist Church included the Womens Society, District offices, money counter, and Mary - Martha Circle where she found many life-long friends. She also cherished her friends in the sewing group and P.E.O. She enjoyed working on the planning board for the Riverview Apts. In Mt. Pleasant and her participation on the Friends of the Library Board. She was very thrilled and surprised when presented with the Paul Harris Award from George and the Rotary Club!
Ernestine earned her Masters Degree in English at Central in 1967 and taught freshman English and Childrens Literature for 5 years before Georges retirement. Many students completed their degrees while living at their home as they enjoyed 20 winters in Clearwater, FL. She was privileged to have traveled to 35 countries in connection with Rotary International Conventions on tours planned and directed by George.
She lives on in the hearts and lives of daughters Nan (Jim) Spindler of Battle Creek, MI and Sara (Gary) Sheldon of Missoula, MT, and son Nick (Sally) Lauer of Decatur, IL, her grand children Jeff (Annette) Spindler, Emily, Todd, and Molly Lauer, Allan and Bethany Sheldon, and Laura (Jordan) Knutson, and great grandchildren Justin and Hannah Spindler.
The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff and caregivers at Country Place and special friend and loyal companion Ollie Clifton for the loving care shown to our mother over the past 5 years!!.
Visitation will be at Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant, on Thurs. 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a celebration of life service on Friday, Aug. 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with a luncheon served at First Methodist Church following the burial at Memorial Gardens.
The family requests that those who desire may give memorials to the George N. and Ernestine Lauer Scholarship Fund at Central Michigan University, or First United Methodist Church, 400 S. Main St, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858

Victoria Frances Bowen
July 17, 1927 - August 22, 2005

Victoria Frances Bowen, age 78, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 22, 2005 at her daughters home in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Vicky was born on Sunday, July 17, 1927 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the daughter of Nick and Mary (Lupp) Solomie. She married Robert C. Bowen on July 20, 1947 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Robert passed away on February 8, 2001.
Vicky was especially proud of her job at Tumas Country Gourmet and the opportunity to meet so many of Mt. Pleasants residents. She loved living at her home in the woods, watching and feeding the deer and animals in her yard. She was a resident of the area for the past fifteen years.
Vicky is survived by her children: Deborah Marie (Robert) Johnson of Rochester, New York, Barbara R. (Chris) Theunissen of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, and Robert C. (Wendy) Bowen, Jr. of Saline, Michigan; her grandchildren: Matthew (Angelica), and Laura Johnson, Craig, Steve, Dan, and Vicki Theunissen, Keith and Geoffrey Bowen; two sisters: Nina Mary Hendrixson and Virginia Ann Garwood, both of Indianapolis, Indiana. Vicky was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and her parents.
Following Vickys wishes, no services are planned and cremation has taken place.

Shirley Ann Acker
August 9, 1940 - August 14, 2005

Shirley Ann Acker, age 65, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 14, 2005.
Funeral service will take place on Thursday, August 18, 2005, 12:00 p.m. at Helms Funeral Home. Rev. Nancy Fulton will be officiating, and interment will take place at Memorial Gardens cemetery. Friends may gather with the family on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the service at 12 noon. Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Central Michigan.
Shirley was born on Friday, August 9, 1940 in Gaines, Michigan to Clarence and Ethel (Tibets) Natzel. She married Kenneth Acker and was a resident of the Mt. Pleasant area for the past forty years. Shirley worked as a greeter for Meijer.
She is survived by her children: Connie Rusti Bartshe, Debra Musil and Victoria Monroe; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; a brother Ed Natzel and a sister Peggy Churches.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; a son Tony Musil; and a sister Judy Natzel.

James B. Shaffer
January 5, 1941 - August 8, 2005

James B. Shaffer, age 64, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Monday, August 8, 2005 at his home. Jim was born on Sunday, January 5, 1941 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of John S. and Dolores A. (Harber) Shaffer. He married Janis L. (Kuhn) Barrett on April 21, 2001 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan
Jim was a Certified Public Accountant, who worked at a variety of jobs, including many years with Weinlander, Fitzhugh in Gladwin, Michigan. His last job was as Assistant Treasurer for the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, a member of the Gladwin Rotary Club, the Knights of Columbus, and the Chamber of Commerce, all in Gladwin. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Midland Area Credit Union for 5 years. He enjoyed camping, riding his Gold Wing motorcycle and sports of all kinds, especially football and NASCAR. He played softball and basketball and coached Little League. Jim was a graduate of Midland High School, class of 1959, where he held several track records, some of which were not beaten for over 30 years. He was a 1972 graduate of Central Michigan University. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a SP4 on active duty from October 20, 1961 until October 19, 1964.
Survivors include his wife, Janis; two sons: James B. (Tammy) Shaffer, II of Wixom, Michigan, and Jon L. (Sarah) Shaffer of Big Rapids, Michigan and their mother, Ella May Shaffer of Sanford, Michigan; two daughters: Caitlin E. and Alissa M. Barrett; his father: John S. Shaffer of Gladwin, Michigan; four grandchildren: Michael, Kristen, Benjamin, and Luke; three brothers: John Jack (Carol) Shaffer of Edenville, Michigan, Robert J. (Debra) Shaffer of Midland, Michigan, and Steven Butch (Melody) Shaffer of Burton, Michigan; one sister, Ann M. (Gary) Myers of Gladwin, Michigan; his father and mother-in-law: Calvin and Dorothy Kuhn of Ishpeming, Michigan, and a sister-in-law: Kristin and David Culliton of Wichita, Kansas. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores A. Shaffer in 2000 and his grandparents: Oliver R. and Mamie Shaffer, and Bruno I. and Anna Harber.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 11, 2005 from the First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with Rev. John Boley officiating. Friends gathered with the family at the Helms Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 10 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and again on Thursday at the First United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later date in Ishpeming cemetery, Ishpeming, Michigan. The family that suggested memorial contributions in Jims memory be made to the First United Methodist Church, CMU Public Broadcasting, Hospice of Central Michigan, or to the wishes of the family. Envelopes were available at the Helms Funeral Home, 330 S. University Ave., Mt. Pleasant, Michigan 48858.
