Shirley Alice Curtiss
September 3, 1942 - May 8, 2005

Shirley Alice Curtiss, age 62, of Blanchard, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2005 at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Shirley was born on Wednesday, September 3, 1942 in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Guy and Hester (Lumbert) Smith. She married Larry Flachs on December 17, 2004 in Mt. Pleasant.
Shirley was a Licensed Practical Nurse, working for Pine River Health Care in St. Louis, Michigan for 23 years. She enjoyed people, fishing, yard sales, shopping, bringing home stray animals, and especially enjoyed riding her Harley.
Survivors include her husband, Larry; children: Rich Curtiss of Michigan, Roxann and Phillip Pollard of Barryton, Michigan, Larry and Anita Curtiss of Sparta, Michigan, Clifford Curtiss of Laingsburg, Michigan, and a step son, Mitchell Flachs of Blanchard, Michigan; six grandchildren; three brothers, Ray and Jackie Smith, Roger Smith, and Gary and Janice Smith, all of Mt. Pleasant; one sister, Betty and Glen Stiff of Mt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by son, Brian Eugene Curtiss and both parents.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Jeff Cromwell of the Central Michigan Assembly of God Church officiating. Interment took place in Union cemetery, Winn, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested by the family to the Humane Animal Treatment Society in honor of Shirleys love of animals.

James Eugene Wing
March 7, 1951 - May 7, 2005

James Eugene Wing, age 54, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, died on Friday, May 7, 2005 at his home in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Jim was born on March 7, 1951. No services are planned.

Cheryl Cher D. Mason
January 21, 1965 - May 2, 2005

Cheryl Cher D. Mason, age 45, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2005 at her home. Cher was born on Thursday, January 21, 1965 in Chicago, Illinois.
Cher was employed as a Training and Development Manager for the Soaring Eagle Casino for the past 7 years. She enjoyed her computer, bowling, fishing, reading, golfing, and CSI. Cher was a warm and giving special person.
Survivors include her dear friends, Bets Baxter and Chris Vigansky, her brother, James Mason, her five special cats, and Skyler. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 6, 2005 from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Interment followed in St. Joseph the Worker cemetery, Beal City, Michigan.

Walter Gordon Chamberlain
October 12, 1929 - May 1, 2005

Walter Gordon Chamberlain, age 79, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2005 at Tendercare of Mt. Pleasant. Walter was born on Monday, October 12, 1929, the son of Charles and Bessie (Kahagash) Chamberlain. On July 28, 1979, he married Linda Dinnock.
Walter was a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. He was employed at the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort as a security guard. He enjoyed basket making and playing the guitar.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; four step-children: Ruth and Glenn Ventrello of Samava, IN, Andrew and Denise Pickel of Alma, Leland Chamberlain of Kalamazoo, and Fayetta and Robert Ellison; a nephew: Gerry McDonald of Mt. Pleasant; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Theodore Chamberlain; his step-brother, Eli Westbrook; and his sisters: Blanche, Mary, and Vera.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Faith Indian Church of the Nazarene in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Doyle Perry officiating. Interment took place in Riverlawn cemetery, Denver Township, Isabella County.

Gladys May Wood
May 29, 1906 - April 28, 2005

Gladys May Wood, age 98, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2005 at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility in Mt. Pleasant. Gladys was born on Tuesday, May 29, 1906, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of William and Susan (Funnell) Johnston. She was the wife of Hal Ora Wood.
Gladys was a lifetime resident of the area. She was a school teacher for the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools for many years, retiring from Pullen Elementary School in 1973. She also taught at Weidman Elementary School. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Community Church, the Mt. Pleasant Community Church Womens Bible Club, the Michigan Retired School Personnel, the CMCH Auxiliary, and the Mt. Pleasant Womens Club .
Gladys is survived by her children: William and Sandi Wood of Clare, Shirley and Gene Hepinstall of Gladwin, and Judy and Dwight Thurston of Clare; thirteen grandchildren; twenty four great grandchildren; and ten great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hal O. Wood; one daughter, June Halie Wood; two brothers: Glen Johnston and Ralph Johnston; one sister, Margaret McNerney.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 1, 2005 at 4 p.m. from the Mt. Pleasant Community Church with Rev. Scott McKee officiating. Interment took place in Riverside cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, following the service. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Mt. Pleasant Community Church or the Central Michigan Community Hospital Auxiliary.

Howard S. Rowe
October 11, 1915 - April 24, 2005

Howard S. Rowe, age 89, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2005 at the Laurels of Mt. Pleasant, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Howard was born In Saginaw, Michigan on October 11, 1915 to Hugh and Luella (Sherburne) Rowe. He moved to Mt. Morris for a short time, then grew up in Flint, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University in East Lansing, where he received a degree in Forestry. Howard then worked for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources as a game warden, retiring after 37 years of service.
Howard was drafted into the Second World War in 1941 and stayed in the Army until the war was over. He was assigned to the 668th Topographical Engineering Company, where he was a surveyor making maps, often behind enemy lines. When he returned home, he continued his job as a game warden until retirement at age 60. He enjoyed retirement at his cottage on Houghton Lake for many years, fishing and spending time with his nieces and nephews, playing cards with friends, and traveling in the United States. He was a Life Member of the Wabon Masonic Lodge #305 F&AM, a Life Member of the VFW Post, a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #195, and the Sportsman Club.
Howard married Thelma M. Morrow on November 28, 1945 in Detroit, and moved to Mt. Pleasant, where he lived for the rest of his life. Thelma survives him. Also surviving is his brother Eugene H. (Linnea) Rowe of Moab, Utah, and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Frank Rowe, and his sister, Roberta Lundberg.
Memorial services were held on Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at 1 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. John Boley officiating. Interment of the cremated remains took place in Memorial Gardens, Mt. Pleasant. A Masonic Memorial Service was held at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends gathered with the family from 12 noon until the time of the service. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Greater Michigan Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, Mid Michigan Region. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home.

Michael Burke McClintic
July 12, 1938 - April 12, 2005

Michael Burke McClintic, 66, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma. Mike was born Tuesday, July 12, 1938 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son on Burke and Virginia (Bissell) McClintic.

Mike established the M.B. McClintic Company in 1976, working in oil and gas exploration, primarily in Michigan. He enjoyed golfing, walking in the woods, and hunting and fishing. He was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving from 1956 intil 1958, with the 101th Airborne Division as a Paratrooper. He was a graduate of Ohio State University in 1967. He lived most of his life in the Mt. Pleasant area.
Survivors include his children: Charles Michael and Cicely Malinda, and their mother, Nancy McClintic and Jackie Stahl; his brother, William Mark and Pamela McClintic. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Burke and Virginia, and a sister, Kay Duzenbury.
In following with Mikes wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services were held on Saturday, April 16, 2005 at 12 noon from Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Tom Zollman officiating. Friends gathered with the family one hour before the service. The family had suggested memorial contributions to the Christopher Reeves Paralysis Foundation, 500 Morris Avenue, Springfield, New Jersey 07081.

David L. Barber
August 30, 1946 - April 10, 2005

David L. Barber, 58, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, died on Sunday, April 10, 2005 at his home.

He was born in Pontiac, Michigan on August 30, 1946 to Lewis and Ruth (Plots) Barber. He lived in the Mt. Pleasant area for the last two and a half years.

David was a truck driver who attended the Horizon House when living in Minnesota. He enjoyed fishing and playing cribbage.

Survivors include his fiancee, Eileen Singer of Mt. Pleasant, a daughter, Stacey and a son Billy Joe. Four brothers: Lewis, Leon, Tom, and Keith; five sisters: Barb, Ruth, Vianne, Pat, and Kathy; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both parents.

Following Davids wishes, he has donated his body to The Willed Body Program at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan.

George F. Campbell
April 3, 1912 - April 7, 2005

George F. Campbell, 93, of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, April 7, 2005 at Stratford Village in Midland.

Mr. Campbell was born April 3, 1912 in Mt. Pleasant, the youngest son of William B. Campbell and Sarah (Rose) Campbell. He married Eva May Cotter on February. 10, 1941.
George attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant.

He left school, at the age of 13, to work to support his parents. His first job was digging ditches for the Pure Oil Company; he then worked for Pure Oil as a gauger and later as an engineer. George then worked, as a salesman, for Straker, Midway, and Franklin Supply companies. In 1970 George was employed by Central Michigan University as a locker room attendant for the Athletic Department. He stayed at CMU until his retirement in 1981, at the age of 70.

George was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Mt. Pleasant, Council 1297. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. He served for many years as a volunteer for Hospice of Central Michigan and was an enthusiastic exerciser at CMUs CHIP facility.

He is survived by daughters; Pauline Williams of Elkhart, Indiana and Kay (Ned) Gardner of Wyoming, and son, Kevin (Elizabeth) Campbell of Midland; grandchildren, Lynette (Ty) Disberry, Christopher Fountain, Abby (Douglas) Hartger, Kelly (Michelle) Campbell and Brian Campbell; and great-grandchildren Alex, Anna, Milani, Arianna, and Chloe; brothers-in-law, Donald, Orville and Merle Cotter, sisters-in-law Lucille, Margaret, Mary, Bernice and Catherine Cotter and Gladys Jurado plus many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents William B. and Sarah Campbell, his wife, Eva May; his son-in-law Clyde Williams; his sisters, Evelyn Campbell, Loretta Small, and Edna Slack; his brothers, Ed, Leo, Bernard, Vincent, and his twin brother John Campbell; his brothers-in-law Doyle, Dolph, Dalton, Earl, and Shadrach Cotter; Frank Small, and Ray Slack; sisters-in-law Elizabeth and Pauline Cotter, Anna, Laura, Florence and Virginia Campbell; his aunts and uncles; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday April 11 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Father Robert Byrne officiating. Interment was in the Calvary cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Friends called at the Helms Funeral Home on Saturday April 9 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and again on Sunday April 10 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of the services at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A Rosary Service was held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. A Vigil Service was held at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to consider memorials to Hospice of Central Michigan and Sacred Heart Academy Foundation. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home.

Galen Thomas Yarch
October 27, 1929 - April 5, 2005

Galen Thomas Yarch, 75, of Shepherd, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at Tendercare Mt. Pleasant, in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan after a courageous battle against lung cancer. Galen was born on Sunday, October 27, 1929 in Rogers City, Michigan, the son of Louis W. and Pauline (Writzler) Yarch. Galen married Thelma Toots Kuebler on January 15, 1951 in Rogers City. Toots preceded Galen in death on February 6, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Their loving marriage produced five children: Michael of Pullman, Belinda Mollin of Mackinaw City, Kirk and Montra of Mt. Pleasant, Dennis and Ginger of Shepherd, and Tim and Jan of Millington. He will also be deeply missed by his ten grandchildren: Monica and Louis Mollen, Troy and Brian Yarch, Jason, Jennifer, Jessica, and Keri Yarch, and Chad and DJ Baker; also four great grandchildren and special buddy Ethan; and many nieces and nephews.
Galen was a crane operator with the Operating Engineers Local 324 for many years. He was a member of the Clare Moose Lodge and the Sanford Eagles Club. Galen loved being around his family and friends, cutting wood, working in his garden, and sitting on the back porch with his Black Lab, Sassy.
In keeping with Galen's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at a later date to inter the cremated remains. The family has asked that friends who wish to remember Galen, make memorial contributions to the Moose Heart Fund, c/o the Clare Moose Lodge, Clare, Michigan. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home, 330 S. University Ave., Mt. Pleasant, Michigan 48858.

Viola Jean Smith
September 18, 1924 - April 4, 2005

Viola Jean Smith, age 80, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, died on Monday, April 4, 2005 at The Wooden Rocker in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Vi was born on Thursday, September 18, 1924 in Big Rapids, Michigan, the daughter of Edmund and Francis (Woodward) Smith.
Vi was a 1942 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, and attended Central Michigan University for one year in 1943. She moved to Trenton, New Jersey in 1944 and worked at a Naval Base. She moved back to Michigan and went to work as a clerk for the Treasury Department for the State of Michigan, where she retired after 19 years of service. Vi enjoyed walking, loved animals, made the greatest chocolate chip cookies, and enjoyed her nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and also her great grand nieces and nephews. She had many friends in Lansing and at her home at the Wooden Rocker in Mt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sister: Woodward C. Smith, Colin L. Smith, Max E. Smith, and Norma Krussell.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2005 at 1 p.m. the Stanwood cemetery, Stanwood, Michigan with Rev. David Frees of the Big Rapids Baptist Church officiating. The family has asked that memorial contributions in memory of Vi be made to the Wooden Rocker Activity Fund, 5785 E. Broadway, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan 48858. Envelopes are also available at the Helms Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.
