Mary M. Rohen
Oct. 26, 1923 - Feb. 7, 2005

Mary Margaret Rohen, age 81, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 7, 2005 at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant. Mary was born on October 26, 1923 in Logan, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Cook) Brian. On December 26, 1045, she married Orval Cub Rohen in Evart, Michigan.
Mary was a homemaker who enjoyed being with her family, including her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary and Cub spent many happy miles traveling in their car to places all over the country, and were known to stop at a casino every now and then.
Mary is survived by her husband of 59 years, Cub, and her children, including Judy Roberts of Mt. Pleasant, Ed Rohen of Shepherd, Kay and John Tuttle of Mt. Pleasant, and Linda and Dan Potter of Shepherd; a sister, Dorothy Critchfield of Logan, Ohio; also 9 grandchildren: Lori Garrett, Michelle Kirby, Edward Rohen, Amy Rohen, Matt Flannery, Valerie A. Potter, Emily Potter, and Stephanie Potter: 9 great grandchildren: Zachary Shaw, Samantha Kirby, Timmy Kirby, Paige Fisher, Nikole Shaw, Danielle Shaw, Allison Klein, Nichole Potts, and Christopher Rohen. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a son, John William.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at 1 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Carla Ives officiating. Interment will take place in the spring in Forest Hill cemetery, Evart, Michigan. It was the familys desire that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Central Michigan, or a charity of the donors choice rather than sending flowers.

Michael Peter Gillette
December 20, 1936 - February 5, 2005

Michael Peter Gillette, age 68, of Gladwin, Michigan, died on Saturday, February 5, 2005 at The Laurels of Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Following Michaels wishes, cremation has taken place. No services are planned.

Dolores A. Kuhlman
September 16, 1909 - January 23, 2005

Dolores A. Kuhlman, age 95, of Farwell, Michigan, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Sunday, January 23, 2005 at the North Woods Nursing Center near Farwell. Dolores was born on September 16, 1909 in Farwell, the daughter of James and Florence (Henry) Rassat. She was a lifetime area resident.
Dolores was the owner of the White House Restaurant in Clare for many years. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Clare.
Survivors include her children: Curtice H. and Kay Ann Hearns of Ludington, Michigan and Barbara and Robert Krell of Clare; five grandchildren: Kevin, Kristie, Karry, Tom and Scott; seven great grandchildren; and nieces: Sue and Ray Kullman of Shepherd, Gail and Gerald Childs of Ludington, and Jackie and Robert Anderson of Evart; also many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Ruth Rassat Greening.
Private funeral services will be held from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Doloress nephew, Rev. Gerald Childs officiating. Interment will take place in Cherry Grove cemetery, Clare, Michigan. Friends considering a memorial contribution in memory of Dolores may with to donate to the American Diabetes Association, the Clare County Hospice Visiting Nurses, or the Isabella County Commission on Aging. Envelopes are available at the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.

Irene G. Freeborn
October 31, 1914 - January 19, 2005

Irene G. Freeborn, age 90, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility in Mt. Pleasant. Irene was born on October 31, 1914 in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of John and Mabel (Graham) Colby. On March 14, 1942, she married Charles W. Freeborn. Charles preceded Irene in death on February 8, 1988.
Irene was a member of the First Church of Christ in Mt. Pleasant. She was retired from Mt. Pleasant Public Schools, where she was a cook in the Central Kitchen for 18 years. She had also been employed as a telephone operator for General Telephone for several years. She enjoyed her grandchildren, and enjoyed sewing, baking, and cooking. She had also be a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include her son, Roy Freeborn of Mt. Pleasant, and a daughter, Elaine and Tim Foltz of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren: Mike Freeborn, Kari Foltz, and Kyle Foltz; and a sister, Marguerite Turner of Alma. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother William Colby.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home with Mr. Ivan Odor of the First Church of Christ officiating. Interment followed in Memorial Gardens cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested to the First Church of Chirst.

Ross C. Sponseller
November 1, 1919 - January 19, 2005

Ross C. Sponseller, age 85, of Shepherd, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at his home. Ross was born on November 1, 1919, the son of Fredrick and Emma (Knipe) Sponseller in Lincoln Township in the same house that he died in. On June 15, 1940, he married Nina Phelps in Vestaburg, Michigan.
Ross was employed in a variety of jobs during his lifetime. He worked for Ferro Manufacturing, Dow Chemical, CMU, he farmed and raised horses and cattle, and was the President of Sponseller Eavestroughing. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and going to flea markets.
Survivors include his wife, Nina; children: Ross Richard and Mary Sponseller of Shepherd, Tom and Donna Sponseller of Shepherd, Harry and Phyllis Sponseller of Dowagiac, Bonnie and Wendell Pung of DeWitt, Linda and Ron Davis of Statesville, NC, Bob and Cindy Sponseller of Shepherd; 17 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild; brother Lee and Rosie Sponseller of Shepherd; sister Dorothy and Pat Burch of Coleman; sister-in-law Dorothy Sponseller of Shepherd. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Floyd, Vern, and Fred, Jr.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 21, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Darren Greenfield officiating. Interment took place in Lincoln Township cemetery, Isabella County. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Pardee Cancer Treatment Fund or Hospice of Central Michigan.

James Cruz, Sr.
October 28, 1910 - January 18, 2005

James Cruz, Sr., age 94, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 at Tendercare of Mt. Pleasant. Jim was born on October 28, 1910 in Dilly, Texas, the son of Jesus and Lucia (Morales) Cruz. On February 17, 1935, he married Ofelia Carrillo in Mt. Pleasant.
As a young man, he and his family came to Mt. Pleasant during the summers as migrant workers. He decided to make the move permanent and would spend the rest of his life here. He was employed at the Mt. Pleasant Sugar Beet Plant, but would retire from the Famo Feed Company (Harris Milling Company) in 1975, after 31 years of employment. Jims family was the joy of his life. He was an honest man and a avid golfer.
Jim is survived by his wife, Ofelia; children, Jim Jr. (Hilda) Cruz, Daniel (Carol) Cruz, Vera (Tom) Strouf, Lucy (Peter) Kent, Loivia (Dennis) Barnes, and Eunice (Ken) MacRitchie; nineteen grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. He also leaves behind two brothers: Jesse (Ruth) Cruz and Joe (Charlene) Cruz. He was preceded in death by both parents, a brother Tom Cruz and a sister Lucia Jimenez.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 22, 2005 at 11 a.m. from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant. Interment took place in Riverside cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. The family asked that memorial contributions be made to the James Cruz Memorial Fund at Tendercare of Mt. Pleasant.

Vance W. Orr
January 4, 1916 - January 17, 2005

Vance W. Orr, well known to the Michigan Oil Industry, passed away at the age of 89 on January 17th at Gratiot Community Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Vance was born at Winchester, Tennessee to Dr. James and Vanness (Womack) Orr on January 4, 1916. The family moved to Rockwood Tennessee where he grew up and graduated from High School. Mr. Orr attended Cumberland University at Lebanon Tennessee where he was a member of their football team. Summers, during his college years he traveled to Michigan and worked in the Oil Fields for his Uncle, Pioneer Oil Man, W.L. McClanahan. After graduating from college, Vance married Emily Baird of Lebanon, Tennessee and they moved to Mt. Pleasant, where he worked for McClanahan Oil, Roosevelt Oil and eventually McClure Oil Company from which he retired as President. He was active in the communities of Mt. Pleasant and Alma, Michigan. Member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Pleasant School Board, Lions Club and Masonic Lodge. He was a long time member of Gratiot Community Hospital Board of Directors and Board Member of Commercial National Bank of Alma.
Mr. Orr continued his keen interest in the Oil Industry and was active on many boards and organizations. He was a member and past president of the Michigan Oil and Gas Association, American Petroleum Institute and IPAA.
Vance loved flying and became a licensed pilot and flew family and friends to his cabin in the Smokies on many occasions. His love of family was evident through out his life taking them on many trips to interesting and fun places.
Mr. Orr was preceded in death by his wife Emily of 50 years, his parents and his three children: Vance Jr., James and Emily Ann Orr Kraai and his brother James. He is survived by his sister Vanness Rowe (James) of Connecticut and Evelyn Orr sister-in-law, Florida. His 10 loving grandchildren: Jamie Orr, Michael Orr, Vance Orr, III, Robin Renee Kraai Vechazone, Kimberly Ann Kraai Griffis, Deidre Orr, Katie Orr Marfia, Maurya Orr, Victor Chiodini and Kristen Gass. Great grandchildren: Nicholas Sanders, Emily M. Orr, Emily A. Griffis, Brennen Vechazone, Rachel & Sara Marfia, He is also survived by Son-in-law: Scott Kraai (Fran), Greenville, Terri Orr Gass, California and Karin Orr, Grand Rapids, 2 nieces Jane Riggio and Nancy Schwartz, nephews James and John Rowe and dear friend Sylvia Brown.
Funeral services for Vance were held on Friday, January 21, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Dr. Stephen Shugert and Rev. Peter Russell of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment took place in Riverside cemetery.
Those wishing to give a memorial might consider: First Presbyterian Church, Mt. Pleasant Michigan, Montcalm County Commission on Aging or Gratiot Community Hospital Renal Division.

Margaret E. Paton
June 28, 1922 - January 16, 2005

Peg Paton died peacefully on Sunday, January 16, 2005 in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan at the age of 82. She was born to Edward and Margaret Riffert on June 28, 1922. She spent her early years in Collingdale, Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school she worked as a Bell Telephone operator in downtown Philadelphia during the war. She met James MacCallum Paton near Cape May, New Jersey and married him in February 1950. Her Jimmie died in August 1965. She spent the next five decades in the greater Philadelphia area, moving to Mt. Pleasant to be nearer her daughter in the fall of 2003.
Peg is survived by two of her daughters, Pamela (Samuel) Kier of Danbury, Connecticut and Susan Pyecroft of Mt. Pleasant; her daughter-in-law Erika Paton of Longhorne, Pennsylvania; and her brother Ed (Nancy) Riffert of Secane, Pennsylvania. She had ten grandchildren; Christopher, Alison, Nicholas, Jamie, Emily, Peter, Jeremiah, Jarrod, Richie, and Amanda; and one great grand-son Anthony. Other special people in her life include Eileen Staub, Isabel Sellers, Betty Hoder, Hope Simpson, and Emma Currie. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her step-son Roger, and her youngest daughter, Meg.
She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, bargain shopping, trying new recipes, rousing political discussion, and a good cup of coffee.
Memorial services were held at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, January 22 at 3:00 p.m. followed by tea and cakes at the Brass Café. Interment of the cremated remains and an additional memorial service will take place later this spring in Pennsylvania at St. Davids Church, a place she dearly loved.
Memorial contributions were suggested to the Friends of the Library.

Adabell Anthony
January 5, 1915 - January 7, 2005

Adabell Anthony, age 89, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Friday, January 7, 2005 at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility in Mt. Pleasant. Adabell was born on Wednesday, January 5, 1916 in Barryton, Michigan, the daughter of Clarence and Maude (Esenhart) Butcher. In 1931 in St. Louis, Michigan, she married Stanley Elias Anthony.
Adabell was a member of the Glad Tidings Church in Oil City, Michigan. She was retired from the Mt. Pleasant Regional Center, where she worked as a direct care worker. She enjoyed cats, dogs, and watching wild animals.
Survivors include her children: Dorothy Yarnell and Barbara Phyllis (Jim) Kirchoff of Zephyer Hills, FL, Charles (Bonnie) Anthony of Coleman, MI, Sandy (Ray) Mason and Rod (Shirley) Anthony of Mt. Pleasant, MI; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Anthony of Harrison, MI; sisters, Lilly of Loraine, OH and Madison Butcher of Merrill, MI; 30 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; sons, Larry and Cedric; twins, Janet and Gerald; granddaughter, Debbie; brother, Lloyd.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at 1 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home with Rev. Anthony Waldrop of the Glad Tidings Church officiating. Interment took place in Memorial Gardens cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Glad Tidings Church, the Alzheimers Association, or to a charity of the donors choice.

Robert James Bell
September 9, 1921 - January 1, 2005

Robert James Bell, age 83, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, formerly of Denver Township, Isabella County, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, January 1, 2005 at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Bob was born on September 9, 1921 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the son of George and Fay Mary (Cozat) Bell.
Bob was a self employed contractor, working for the Isabella County Drain Commission for 40 years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and loved children. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater. He received several medals, including a Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in action.
Survivors include his brother in law, Ronald Kautz of Mt. Pleasant, a sister in law, Hilda Bell of Coleman; several nieces and nephews; and special friends who called him Uncle Bob: Steve and Lanett Zaleski, Janice and Duane Wilcox, Kim and Tim Dorow, Joe and Tammy Nowicki, Jacky Roach, Bill and Sherry Hileman, Jim and Bonnie Stinson, Bud and Sally Huntley, Bev and Vern Hacker, and many, many more. He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Vernon Stiles, and John Frazer Bell; and a sister Luicille Kautz.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Elder William Hileman of the LDS officiating. Interment took place in Delwin cemetery, Denver Township, Isabella County, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, 3000 Monroe N.W., Grand Rapids, Michigan 49505.
Special acknowledgements and sincere thanks were extended to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, especially to the staff on 2 South.

Sylvester Drigo
December 31, 1932 - December 24, 2004

Sylvester Drigo, age 71, of Dominica, Commonwealth of Dominica, and of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Friday, December 24, 2004 at St. Marys Medical Center in Saginaw, Michigan. He was born on December 31, 1932 in Castle Bruce, Dominica, the son of St. George and Bertillia (Matthew) Drigo. On October 26, 1960, he married his wife, Stephanie in Portsmouth, Dominica.
Sylvester was an agricultural manager in Dominica. He was a member of the Sussex Sports Club, and Captain of the Cricket Team. He attended the First Presbyterian Church and the Community Church in Mt. Pleasant. He was a resident of Mt. Pleasant for the past 2 years.
Survivors include his wife, Stephanie; 13 children, including his daughter Prisca Gamble; 2 brothers; 4 sisters; and 24 grandchildren, including Charlotte and Ginger.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 27 at 11 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church in Mt. Pleasant with Dr. Stephen Shugert officiating. Burial will take place in Castle Bruce Roman Catholic cemetery, Dominica, Commonwealth of Dominica. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Pardee Cancer Treatment Fund.

Lorine Elizabeth Norgaard
December 25, 1915 - December 19, 2004

Lorine Elizabeth Norgaard, 88, of Mt. Pleasant passed away Sunday, December 19, 2004 at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility.
Funeral services were held at Helms Funeral Home in Mt Pleasant at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 23, with Rev. Samuel B. Reith, officiating. Visitation was from 10:00 to 11:00 that morning.
Lorine Elizabeth Sweet was born to Robert and Maude (Harkan) Sweet in Cambellton, New Brunswick, Canada. She studied bookkeeping as a career and, being adventurous and independent, she moved to the big city, Montreal, Quebec when she was 20. Several years later she met a young man from Denmark. She and Otto were married on April 12, 1941. They later lived in Windsor, Ontario, Brighton, Michigan and Lansing. They had lived in Mt Pleasant since 1986.
She was the oldest of 7 children. After the loss of her mother she had to help raise her siblings until her dad re-married , many years later. Like a ripple over water, her love affected all who knew her. She will be missed by her son, Carl (Vondene) Norgaard; daughter, Kris (Mike) Georgia; brother, Conrad (Frances) Sweet; sisters in law, Ali Sweet and Pauline Sweet; grandchildren, Eugene, Michael, Francine (Todd) Phipps, Jason (Becky), and Josh (Carmen) Norgaard, Scott Georgia, and Erin (Scott) Georgia-Korhorn; and five great grandchildren (soon to be seven).
Lorine was preceded in death by her husband, Otto; her parents, Robert and Maude Sweet; brothers, Royce Sweet and John Sweet; sisters, Kathleen Howarth and Marie Taylor and a great-grandchild, Ryan Norgaard

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Building Fund of Zion Lutheran Church or The Salvation Army.
