David Franklin Palmer
February 1, 1910 - July 25, 2004
David Franklin Palmer, age 94, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, July 25, 2004 at his home in Mt. Pleasant. David was born on February 1, 1910 in Clare, Michigan, the son of Samuel and Dora Allbes (Widman) Palmer. On August 11, 1935, he married the former Gertrude S. Neal in Union Township, Isabella County, Michigan. Gertrude preceded David in death on March 24, 2002.
David was a lifetime resident of the area, working in construction. He is survived by his children, Marilyn Palmer of Mt. Pleasant, MI, Bette and Bill Chestnut of Surprise, AZ, Donald and Linda Palmer of Green Cove Springs, FL, David C. and Wendy Palmer of Strawberry Plains, TN, and Eugene and Mary Palmer of Port Huron, MI. 9 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 9 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude, both parents, a brother Gerald, and a sister Frances.
Private funeral services were held. Interment took place in Memorial Gardens cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, beside his wife Gertrude. Memorial contributions were suggested to the American Lung Association.

Woodrow W. Reed
January 11, 1913 - July 2, 2004

Woodrow Wotring Reed, age 91, of Rosebush, Michigan, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at his home. Woody was born January 11, 1913 in Riga Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, the son of Harry and Emma Jane Wotring Reed. He married Doris Bitler on December 13, 1941 in Mason, Michigan. Doris preceded him in death on December 14, 1998.
Woody was a parts manager for Johnson Motors of Mt. Pleasant and worked at the power plant at the State Home and Training School. He served his country in the Army during WWII was a member of the VFW Post 3033. Woody enjoyed woodworking, gardening, spending half of each year in Florida, and was an avid shuffleboard player winning over 100 trophies.
Woody is survived by his daughter and husband, Susan and Bob Walton of Rosebush; five grandchildren and their children, Trevor and Melinda Walton and Ryan and Jarid of Coleman, Amy and Phil Vogel and Katherine, Sylvia, and Gabrielle of Rosebush, Wendy Walton of Lake, Hedlun and Stephanie Hirchert-Walton and Audrey of Lansing, and Dallas and Maureen Walton and Paige and Logan of Almont; a brother Charles Reed of Mt. Pleasant; and a sister and her husband, Bessie and James Bourland of Shepherd. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Adah Johnson; and a brother, Archie.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Interment followed at Memorial Gardens in Mt. Pleasant. Memorial contributions were suggested to the American Heart Association.

George Arnold Mongene
November 26, 1952 - June 30, 2004

George A. Mongene, age 51, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at his home in Mt. Pleasant. He was born November 26, 1952 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, the son of Fred and Virginia Germain Mongene.
George married Susan Kequom on December 18, 1996 in Mt. Pleasant and moved here from Sault Ste. Marie. He was a self employed painter who helped people that needed jobs. He was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.
George is survived by his wife, Susan of Mt. Pleasant; his father and step mother, Fred and Virginia Mongene of Raco, Michigan; his step father, Donald McPherson of Pontiac; a son, Christopher and Amy Downs of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; a step son, David Frank Anderson of Eagle River, Alaska; three grandchildren; three sisters and husbands, Elizabeth and Michael Trimm, Donna and Jeff Smith, and Eleanor and Gene Swartz, all of Pontiac; a half sister, Lisa Dow of Raco, Michigan; a brother and his wife, Allan and Sarah Mongene of Raco; two half brothers, Mark Mongene of Raco and Kenneth Mongene of Sault Ste. Marie; his best friend and cousin, Wild Bill (Donald) Krull; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother; and a granddaughter, Christa Shay Downs.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 3, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. from the Faith Church of the Nazarene in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Doyle Perry officiating. Interment followed at Woodland cemetery in Rosebush, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested to Hospice of Central Michigan.

Charles Clifford Collins, Jr.
May 22, 1927 - June 26, 2004

Charles Clifford Collins, Jr., age 77, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Saturday, June 26, 2004 at his home. Charles was born on Sunday, May 22, 1927 in Coleman, Michigan, the son of Charles and Mary Jane (Jackson) Collins, Sr. He married the former Rose Britton on December 4, 1961 in Mt. Pleasant. Rose passed away on January 3, 1996.
Charles was employed for New Haven Foundry as a crane operator and a cupola operator for 20 years. He was a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, the American Legion, the Chippewa Indian United Methodist Church, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in both World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his daughter, Karen Jackson, a special friend, Verna Walsh, 5 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and many great great grandchildren along with 3 brothers and their wives: Steve and Luella Collins of North Bradley, MI; Ronald and Debbie Collins of Two Rivers, and Lyle and Frances Collins of Idaho. 3 sisters and their husbands: Vivian and Paul Jackson of Mt. Pleasant, Joyce Hart of Mt. Pleasant, and Doris and Art Romer of Gladwin.
Charles was preceded in death by his spouse, Rose; both parents; a great grandson, Justin Bennett; a great great grandson, Kyle Anthony; and a brother in law, John Hart.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 1, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chippewa Indian United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Interment was in Woodland cemetery, Rosebush, Michigan. Friends desiring to make a contribution in memory of Charles may wish to consider the Chippewa Indian United Methodist Church.

Gene Matthew Ritter
April 23, 1941 - June 2004

Gene Matthew Ritter, age 63, of Clare, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 in Rosebush, Michigan. Gene was born on April 23, 1941 in Isabella County, the son of Lloyd and Iva (Collins) Ritter. He was a lifetime area resident.
Gene was a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. He enjoyed photography, citizens band radios, UFOs, NASCAR racing, and he loved children, especially see and hearing them laugh.
Survivors include his brothers, Roy Carl Ritter of Clare, Wayne and Karen Ritter of Mt. Pleasant, Lloyd and Linda Ritter of Mt. Pleasant, and his sister Dianna Ritter Goodwin and her husband Harold of Clare. 18 nieces and nephews, James, Richard, Deanna, Nathan, Jamie, Wayne II, Alex, Douglas, Linze, Charles, Tracy, Sheila, Corina, Jennifer, Tonya, Harold II, Ashley, and Allen. 23 great nieces and nephews, and 1 great great niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Doris Thompson and Kathy Ritter, and a niece, Tiffany Ritter.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home. Interment took place in Delwin cemetery, Denver Township, Isabella County, Michigan.

Edith D. Adams
October 1, 1915 - June 15, 2004

Edith D. Adams, age 88, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at St. Marys Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan.
Edith was born October 1, 1915 in Owosso, Michigan, the daughter of Charles and Enza (Millard) McLaughlin. She married Jack Adams who preceded her in death on December 7, 2001. Edith was a receptionist at the First Federal Savings in Owosso for 25 years, retiring in 1977. She enjoyed reading, was a political commentator, like basketball and especially like golf and Tiger Woods
Edith is survived by two sons, Dennis and Barbara Logan Adams of Mt. Pleasant and Robert Dean Adams of Lansing; four grandchildren Denyse (Gordon) Ferguson, Jason Adams, Jesse Adams, and Joshua Adams; three great grandchildren, Victoria, MacKenzie, and Chloe Ferguson; two sisters, Ruth Dingwall and Doris Waco, both of Sonoma, California; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Dennis Adams officiating. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Arthritis Foundation.

Lois Evelyn Purdy
October 2, 1919 - June 15, 2004

Lois Evelyn Purdy, age 84, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at the Wooden Rocker near Mt. Pleasant. She was born on October 2, 1919 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Alva and Bertha (Major) Hooker. Lois was a Mt. Pleasant area resident since 1962
Lois married Gordon E. Purdy on June 16, 1940 in Gladwin, Michigan. Gordon preceded her in death on June 25, 1989. She was a homemaker who enjoyed playing bridge, was a member of the New Comers Club, a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and enjoyed painting.
Lois is survived by her children; a son, Darl and Joan Purdy of Fremont and their children, Kent and Kyle; a daughter, Karon and Ken MacDonald of Rockford and their children, Scott and Steven; a son, Keith and Darlene Purdy of Naples, Florida and their children, Ryan, Christine, and Robert; a daughter, Diane and Mike Leffingwell of Mt. Pleasant and their chidlren, Chris and Nick; and a son, Greg and Patricia Purdy of Bentonville, Arkansas and their daughter, Erica; a brother, Raymond and Beverly Hooker of Engadine, Michigan; and a sister, Marilyn Daubenspeck of Bradenton, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Weldon Hooker; and a sister, Lorna Breault Doan.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 18, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Dale Golden of the Blanchard Pine River United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside services were held on Friday, June 18, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at the Butman Township cemetery in Gladwin County, Michigan.

Tracy Sue Eckland
September 2, 1967 - June 9, 2004

Tracy Sue Eckland, age 36, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at the Schnepp Health Care Center in St. Louis, Michigan. Tracy was born on September 9, 1967 in Albion, Michigan, the daughter of George and Melody (Phebus) Eckland. She was a resident of the area all of her life. Tracy was as a care giver for many people in the area. She enjoyed working on cross stitch and needle point. She enjoyed animals, especially her dog, Lady. Survivors include her mother and father, and uncles and aunts, including George and Sharon Phebus of Jackson, MI, Charles and Robert Phebus of California, John and Judy Phebus of Jackson, Robert and LuAnn Sower, Donald and Ranee Eckland, and John Eckland, all of Mt. Pleasant, and Charlisa Phebus, and a cousin Alice. She was very close to Uncle George and Aunt Sharon Phebus, and Aunt Charlisa Phebus and her cousin, April. Tracy was preceded in death by her brother Bob Eckland in 1990, and her grandmother Alice. A private funeral service was held for Tracy with her family present. Interment took place in Memorial Gardens cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Crippled Children Fund.

Richard B. Haney, Sr.
November 9, 1943 - June 8, 2004

Richard Bruce Haney, Sr., age 60, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at his home. Richard was born on November 9, 1943 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Loney B. and Leona M. (Pease) Haney. He married Carol Diane Thrush on May 12, 1990 in Winn, Michigan. Richard was a truck driver for Milan Supply, and a farmer. He was a volunteer fireman, and enjoyed restoring old gas pumps and gas tanks, and enjoyed hunting, camping, and spending time with his family. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, from 1960 to 1968. Richard is survived by his wife, Diane Haney of Winn; his children, Deborah and Craig Goffnett of Ithaca, Rick and Jessica Haney of Fenton, Ed and Jill Haney of Waterford, Doug Darnell of Weidman, Dave and Cindy Darnell of Bay City, Lisa and Edward Matthews of Beal City, and Lori Darnell of Winston Salem, NC; his mother, Leona Haney of Mt. Pleasant; seven grandchildren, Rose Haney, Brooklyn Goffnett, Nathan Goffnett, Jackie Matthews, Billy Matthews, Eddie Matthews, and David Darnell, Jr.; and two sisters, Arlene and Lee Scramlin and Donna Mae and Jerry Nelson. Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 10, 2004 at 11:00 AM from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Jean Thrush officiating. Interment followed at Union cemetery in Winn. Memorial contributions were suggested to Hospice of Central Michigan.

Hester Smith
April 2, 1919 - June 7, 2004

Hester Smith, age 85, of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan passed away on Monday, June 7, 2004 at the Pine River Healthcare Center in St. Louis, Michigan. Hester was born on April 2, 1919 in Sunfield, Michigan, the daughter of Nelson and Elizabeth (Baughman) Lumbert. On September 10, 1935, she married Guy L. Smith in Isabella County. Guy preceded her in death on December 13, 2003. Hester enjoyed sewing, baking, canning, and gardening. For many years, she and Guy built houses in the area. Survivors include her children, Ray and Jacquelyn Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Roger Smith of Shepherd, Gary and Janice Smith of Shepherd, Shirley Curtiss of Blanchard, and Betty and Glen Stiff of Mt. Pleasant. 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren; brothers, Daniel and Raymond Lumbert, and a sister Dora Harrington. Hester was preceded in death by her husband, Guy, brothers Archie, David, and Junior Lumbert, sisters Florence Squire, Marie Heinlein, and Elsie Saumier and a grandson Brian Curtiss. Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 10, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Helms Funeral Home with Rev. Rolla Timmons officiating. Interment took place in the Chippewa Township cemetery, Isabella County. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Pine River Healthcare Center.

Catherine A. Kiley
1911 -- 2004

Catherine A. (Holahan) Kiley, age 92, of Boynton Beach, Florida died on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at the JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Florida. Catherine was born August 6, 1911 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Thomas and Katherine (ONeil) Holahan. She married Jerome Kiley on March 10, 1944 in Detroit. Catherine was Rosie the Riveter for Ford and worked on the assembly line for 27 years retiring in 1967. She was a member of St. Lukes Catholic Church in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery in Detroit.
Catherine is survived by her two sisters, Ruth N. Holahan of Detroit and Sr. Theonilla Holahan, SSJ of Kalamazoo; and two nieces Bernita Mozurkewich of Lake Isabella, MI and RuthAnn Derth of Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Thomas N. and George M.; a sister, Bernita Holahan, SSJ; and a nephew, Thomas J. Holahan.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Memorial contributions were suggested to your local hospice.

John S. Heitman
August 15, 1955 - May 26, 2004

John Stuart Heitman, age 48, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at his home. John was born August, 15, 1955 in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Eric and Helen (Gover) Heitman. On August 6, 1983, he and Patricia Penland were married at Newaygo, Michigan.
A graduate of Ferris State University, John was owner and operator of Heitman Video Services and WQOS Radio in Mt. Pleasant. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he started the worship program on video, a project that brought the Sunday morning services into homes via public access TV. John also initiated City Hall Television and the taping of School Board and County Commission meetings. His community involvement centered around volunteer video services, taping hundreds of events such as concerts, sporting events, Jazz At The Library, and parades. Many of these were shown on public access TV. John loved family trips and outings. He particularly enjoyed the challenges of traveling two-tracks and unexplored territory.
John is survived by his wife, Patricia of Mt. Pleasant; four children, Jennifer, Travis William, Michael John, and Patrick Marvin Heitman all of Mt. Pleasant; his parents, Eric and Helen Heitman of Bellaire; his in laws, Marvin and Marian Penland of Newaygo; three brothers, William and Janice Heitman of Plymouth Township, Robert and Jeannine Heitman of Oakhurst, CA, and Scott Heitman of Clinton Township; a niece, Katie Bair; and a nephew, Chris Heitman. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, N. D. and Lura Gover; his paternal grandparents, Erich and Elsie Heitman; and a brother, Stephen.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. from the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. Rev. John Boley officiated. Interment followed in the Riverside cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Heitman Children Education Fund.

Marjorie McDonald
February 27, 1911 - May 19, 2004

Marjorie McDonald, age 93, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Lake Wales, Florida and Midland, Michigan, died Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at The Laurels of Mt. Pleasant. Marjorie was born February 27, 1911 in Bronson, Michigan, the daughter of Bert and Lucy Jones Walker. On August 21, 1934, she and Stewart McDonald were married at Bronson, Michigan.
Marjorie taught 4th grade at Forest School. She and Stewart retired to Lake Wales, Florida in 1970. They were very active in many church and community organizations. Marjorie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lake Wales.
Marjorie is survived by her children, Margaret and Roland Hill of Cedarville and David and Sharon McDonald of Lake; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1993, two brothers, and a sister.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 22, 2004 from the Helms Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. John Boley of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant officiating. Interment of the cremated remains will be in the Bronson cemetery in Bronson, Michigan.
Memorial contributions were suggested to the Florida United Methodist Childrens Home or Central Michigan Community Hospitals Cancer Wing.
